Strikeforce medical suspensions and injuries for 'Diaz vs Noons II' Posted: 11 Oct 2010 02:18 PM PDT The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for the Strikeforce: "Diaz vs. Noons II" event that took place this past Saturday night (Oct. 9) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. With several of the bouts ending early (and violently), there were a handful of fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors. Chief among them is K.J. Noons, who took a lickin' and kept on tickin' against bitter rival Nick Diaz in their five round war for the welterweight strap. "King Karl" needs a few black and whites of his mandible before the docs green light his return. Also getting benched for some in-cage punishment was the venerable Josh Thomson. "The Punk" suffered a possible knee injury and hand fracture from the onslaught of lightweight foe Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, who also got slapped with a mandatory vacation for trauma to his rotator cuff. But that's not all. Here is the complete list of Strikeforce: "Diaz vs. Noons II" injuries and their medical instructions: Luis Mendoza: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons. David Marshall: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for two facial lacerations unless cleared by a physician. Andre Galvao: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons. Josh Thomson: Suspended 180 days (180 days no contact) for possible right hand fracture and left knee injury unless cleared by a physician. Minimum suspension of 60 days (60 days no contact) for left and right side head lacerations unless cleared by a physician. K.J. Noons: Suspended 180 days (180 days no contact) for left thumb fracture and left mandible fracture unless cleared by a physician. Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. Joining him at the 50k mark was former Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson. "The Punk" was also awarded fifty grand for squeaking past promotion newcomer Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante ($40,000). Also racking up some decent coin (not really) is new 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen. "Rumina" took home Sarah Kaufman's arm as well as a $3,000 payday. The former champ was awarded $20,000 in defeat. Here are the complete Strikeforce: "Diaz vs. Noons II" payouts: Jess Bouscal $3,000 ($1,500 to show, $1,500 to win) Ron Keslar $1,500 James Terry $3,000 ($1,500 to show, $1,500 to win) Tyron Woodley $15,000 ($7,500 to show, $7,500 to win) Josh Thomson $50,000 Nick Diaz $50,000 Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. UFC Quick Quote: Dan Hardy aiming for second round knockout of Carlos Condit Posted: 11 Oct 2010 11:22 AM PDT
With UFC 120: "Bisping vs. Akiyama" quickly approaching, Dan Hardy has a precious few days left to verbally prod his co-main event opponent Carlos Condit. "The Outlaw" told The Independent that Condit isn't athletic enough or strong enough to control him the ways GSP did. Probably an accurate statement. Hardy also took a jab at Greg Jackson's game planning in suggesting that Jackson-trained fighters often take the safest route to victory. Another comment that seems likely. Dan closed things out with a friendly prediction of how the fight will end ... Hardy by KO in the 2nd. Will he be right about that last comment? Is Hardy too much for Condit to handle? |

Posted: 11 Oct 2010 09:45 AM PDT Some news that has seemingly snuck up on fights fans courtesy of The Wrestling Observer (via Bloody Elbow). Professional wrestler turned aspiring mixed martial artist Bobby Lashley's contract with Strikeforce has expired. The heavyweight is now in an exclusive negotiating period with Strikeforce. Dave Meltzer with more details:
Lashley is of course coming off an ugly loss to Chad Griggs at Strikeforce: "Houston," not exactly an ideal position to be in when trying to negotiate a new contract. Off to a quick 5-0 start to his MMA career, there was early hope that Bobby would improve his skill set much in the same way that current UFC heavyweight champion and former pro wrestler Brock Lesnar did. Those thoughts quickly evaporated and turned into dreams as Lashley, though he was winning, left a lot to be desired in his performances. As for Lashley's future in the fight game, there do not seem to be many options. You can likely rule out the UFC. Strikeforce will almost assuredly be asking for Bobby to lower his asking price and will do so with a decent amount of leverage, something that "The Dominator" might not be too keen on. Bellator may come into play as they continue to build their brand. They did pay an awful lot for Roger Huerta's services, and a heavyweight that draws could be of interest to Bjorn Rebney and company. One thing is for sure however, if Lashley is serious about continuing his career in MMA, his next fight for whatever promotion and against whomever, better show fans a marked improvement if he expects to garner any interest going forward. Thoughts on Lashley's future? Have we seen the last of him inside a cage? |
Cole Miller surgery video to repair fusion of artery and vein Posted: 11 Oct 2010 08:25 AM PDT Ross Pearson left a little something to remember him by after falling to "Magrinho" at UFC Fight Night 22 back in September. |
With three fights left on his contract, will Randy Couture compete long enough to fulfill them? Posted: 11 Oct 2010 08:02 AM PDT Based on his conversation with the MMA:30 Radio Hour, it sounds like it could be a race between Zuffa and Hollywood to see who presents him the better offer...
The biological clock continues to tick for "The Natural" after his recent success inside and outside the cage. In addition to whooping James Toney at UFC 118, Couture starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in the hit box office movie "The Expendables." Is the forty-something UFC hall-of-famer better suited for the Octagon or the silver screen? Or is he headed for a flop in either medium? 59% of the Maniacs polled think he's still got some interesting match-ups at light heavyweight. Can you name some? |
Posted: 11 Oct 2010 07:37 AM PDT The Zuffa legal eagles are flying high again, this time swooping down and sinking their talons into the scurvy pirates at livevss.tv. The UFC owners filed suit last Friday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas against Daniel Wallace of Selsey, West Sussex, England, for unauthorized live-streaming video of UFC events including UFC 119 on back Sept. 25. UFC 120: Michael Bisping feels 'a bit of pressure' to perform in front of his hometown crowd Posted: 11 Oct 2010 07:16 AM PDT Props: ESPN Quoteworthy:
Hot-and-cold middleweight Michael Bisping doesn't want to go belly-up in front of his hometown crowd when he takes on International star Yoshihiro Akiyama in the main event of UFC 120 on Oct. 16 in London. The boisterous Brit almost ate crow against Denis Kang his last time out in Manchester and doesn't want any close calls against "Sexyama." Is Bisping going down for "The Count" on Spike TV? Or using the Judo master as a stepping stone to bigger and better opportunities within the division? |
UFC 125: Clay Guida confirms bout with Takanori Gomi on Jan. 1 Posted: 10 Oct 2010 11:28 PM PDT Fan favorite Clay Guida and Pride FC superstar Takanori Gomi will do battle in Las Vegas, Nevada, at UFC 125 on Jan 1, 2011, according to "The Carpenter" during a recent interview with ESPN Chicago 1000 (via Sherdog.com). Following his submission loss to top lightweight contender Kenny Florian back at UFC 107, Guida was able to pick up back-to-back submission victories to get him back in the middle of the lightweight mix. He submitted Shannon Gugerty by arm triangle in the UFC's debut on Versus back in March and kept the momentum rolling by defeating Rafael dos Anjos back at UFC 117 when the Brazilian was forced to tap because of pressure applied on his injured jaw. Guida will look to make it three straight, as well as catapult himself toward the front of the division, when he trades hands with the "Fireball Kid." After a much needed win over Tyson Griffin at the second UFC on Versus event in August, Gomi hopes to keep his momentum going, too. The Japanese import -- once considered the best lightweight in the world -- dropped his Octagon debut to Florian via third round submission (rear naked choke) earlier this year. Pundits and critics were calling it a career after the disappointing performance, especially when it was combined with Gomi two disappointing upset losses to Sergey Golyaev and Satoru Kitaoka before his promotional debut. But, just like that, Gomi is all of a sudden relevant thanks to the Griffin knockout and can really raise his stock in the New Year with a high profile win over a popular workhorse such as Guida. UFC 125, though not officially announced, is expected to be headlined by division champion Frankie Edgar, as he defends his title in a rematch against undefeated Gray Maynard. Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann and Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera are also expected to be announced for the Jan. 1 pay-per-view in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to this still-developing fight card. |
