Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva vs Valentijn Overeem official for Strikeforce event on Dec. 4 Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:34 PM PDT Valentijn Overeem -- the older brother of Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem -- will indeed collide with Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva at the upcoming Strikeforce event planned for the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 4, 2010. The promotion today made the match up official with a formal announcement. With a surgically repaired Fabricio Werdum on the shelf until 2011 and Fedor Emelianenko still hiding behind the iron curtain, the promotion had very few options for "Bigfoot" following his "Heavy Artillery" win over former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski. Enter "The Python." Overeem (28-25) has been fighting since 1996 and has experience in RINGS, PRIDE and Sengoku. After back-to-back losses in 2009, the Dutchman put together consecutive knockout victories earlier this year. He has good hands and plenty of power, but over half his losses have come by way of submission. 15 if you're keeping score at home. Silva (14-2) likes to stand and bang, but will he exploit this weakness? The Brazilian has enjoyed a pretty successful run at heavyweight since his 2005 debut. His only loss in the past four years was a unanimous decision to Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" in November 2009. Aside from "The Pitbull," "Pezao" was probably most recognized for his time spent as Elite XC Heavyweight Champion. Strikeforce: "Henderson vs. Babalu" will feature a long overdue rematch between Dan "Hollywood" Henderson and Renato "Babalu" Sobral." Scott Smith is also slated to make his welterweight debut against Paul "Semtex" Daley in what promises to be an absolute slugfest. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates to this still-developing fight card.

UFC 119 drug test results come back clean from Indiana Gaming Commission for 'Mir vs Cro Cop' Posted: 12 Oct 2010 02:38 PM PDT The Indiana Gaming Commission today confirmed (via MMA Fighting) that nine of the 22 competitors who were tested for illegal/banned substances after competing at UFC 119: "Mir vs. Cro Cop" on Sept. 25 have all passed with flying colors. Main event participants Frank Mir and Mirko Filipovic, as well as Ryan Bader, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Chris Lytle, Sean Sherk, Melvin Guillard, C.B. Dollaway and Matt Mitrione were all screened for performance enhancers such as steroids and drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others. Results from these battery of tests all returned negative. The fighters mentioned above were randomly selected. However, athletic commissions typically test the main event participants and fight night winners, as well as those who have failed drug tests in the past. More on the UFC 119 pay-per-view after the jump. UFC 119: "Mir vs. Cro Cop" went down from the Conseco Fieldhouse on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jake Shields expected to get next welterweight title shot with UFC 121 win over Martin Kampmann Posted: 12 Oct 2010 12:21 PM PDT Sorry Mr. Fitch, but it looks like UFC President Dana White has some big plans for Jake Shields -- assuming the former Strikeforce middleweight champion can get past Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. Those plans include a welterweight title fight against the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck, who are set to do battle on Dec. 11 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. White brought word of the tentative plans during today's UFC 124 press conference in Montreal:
And if "The Hitman" wins? Well, that remains to be seen. Shields' last bout was an upset win over Dan Henderson under the Strikeforce banner in Nashville last April. "Hendo" had Shields on wobbly legs early in the first round, but the Cesar Gracie disciple was able to neutralize "Dangerous" Dan for the remaining four rounds with his suffocating wrestling, earning the unanimous decision victory. Following the CBS televised bout, the UFC made him an offer he couldn't refuse and Shields opted to pursue bigger and better opportunities inside the Octagon. In addition to the Kampmann vs. Shields co-main event, Brock Lesnar headlines his fourth straight UFC pay-per-view as he defends his heavyweight title against unbeaten Cain Velasquez. Also on the card, former light heavyweight title holder Tito Ortiz looks to interrupt the four-fight winning streak of Matt "The Hammer" Hamill. UFC 121 takes place on Oct. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

UFC 120: Mike Pyle prepared to unleash hell on John Hathaway on Oct. 16 in London Posted: 12 Oct 2010 10:16 AM PDT Props: SB Nation Quoteworthy:
Well-traveled mixed martial arts veteran Mike Pyle is hoping his training at Xtreme Couture will be the difference when he goes to war with undefeated welterweight prospect John Hathaway at the upcoming UFC 120 event on Oct. 20 in London, England. "Quicksand" is 2-2 in his UFC career but could vault himself to the front of the pack with a big win over "The Hitman." Does Pyle have the chops to get it done? Or will the Brit continue his unblemished ascension through the ranks of the 170-pound division?

UFC 121: Is the winner of Martin Kampmann vs Jake Shields the perfect match-up for Jon Fitch? Posted: 12 Oct 2010 09:15 AM PDT The former welterweight number one contender seems to think so...
If his interview with MMA News is any indication, it sounds like the AKA standout will be watching UFC 121 very closely, as one of the welterweight fighters on the main card may very well turn out to be his next opponent. Anyone think this is the right direction for the division? Or should the winner of Kampmann vs. Shields automatically fight the winner of St. Pierre vs. Koscheck? Here more from Fitch after the jump.

Latest UFC 120 odds and betting lines for 'Bisping vs Akiyama' on Oct. 16 Posted: 12 Oct 2010 07:42 AM PDT The clock is ticking ... literally. We're just a few days away from the upcoming UFC 120: "Bisping vs. Akiyama" Spike TV event, which takes place from the O2 Arena in London, England, on Saturday, October 16. And the closer we get to showtime, is less time that you have to place your bets. This weekend's action is, of course, headlined by Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 Champion Michael Bisping, who tries once again to get into the 185-pound title hunt when he takes on International fighting star Yoshihiro Akiyama. "The Count" is coming off a unanimous decision win over Dan Miller at UFC 114 earlier in the year, which may explain why he's been tagged as a -220 favorite against "Sexyama," whose UFC 116 loss to Chris Leben in July left him as a +175 underdog. Perhaps the bookies weren't impressed with Carlos Condit's TKO win over Rory MacDonald at UFC 115 back in June -- or maybe they were overly impressed with Dan Hardy's ability to survive five rounds against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 111 last March. Either way, the "Natural Born Killer" is wearing +145 to "The Outlaw's" -175. Here are the latest UFC 120 odds (- = favorite; + = underdog):

Is the 14-0 "Hitman" being overlooked in the welterweight division?
Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:51 AM PDT Props: MMA Fix Quoteworthy:
Ultimate Fighter, WEC commentator and all-around tough guy Stephan Bonnar looks to re-establish his presence in the 205-pound division when he takes on Igor Pokrajac at the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 Finale on Dec. 4 in Las Vegas. "The American Psycho" was treading water after posting three consecutive losses, however; was able to get back into the win column with an emphatic victory over fellow TUF veteran Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 110: "Nogueira vs. Velasquez" earlier this year. Is Pokrajac going to spoil his return to "Sin City?" |
