Quoteworthy:

"I'm an alright standing guy myself. The standup was working for me so I kept it there. I wasn't trying to land any unnecessary shots, but I was trying to make sure he was out. When you talk yourself up that high, you fall further if you lose. That could've been me knocked out, so I'm not going to sit here and talk trash. I just gotta get back into the gym. There's nothing but monsters in this end of the division. I'd like to see who wins between Kampmann and Shields. I have decision losses to both guys and I'm looking forward to see who wins that one.

Less than 24 hours after his destruction of Dan Hardy at UFC 120, Carlos Condit has already set his sights on the winner of Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampmann, which takes place next Saturday night (Oct. 23) at UFC 121. "The Hitman" defeated Condit by split decision back at UFC Fight Night 18 in April 2009. Three years prior, the "Natural Born Killer" suffered a unanimous decision loss to Shields. Condit solidified his place in the 170Ib division by stunning "The Outlaw" in the very first round in London. Never one to entertain fans with his words, Condit ignored harsh statements from Hardy such as "he's stupid for calling me out." Instead, Condit responded with his fists by knocking out the English fighter with seconds left to go in the first round. Do you think Condit deserves a rematch with either Shields or Kampmann? Or should the winner of that fight get an immediate title shot?

UFC 120 bonuses and awards for 'Bisping vs Akiyama' Spike TV fights

Posted: 16 Oct 2010 08:31 PM PDT

UFC 120: "Bisping vs. Akiyama" from the O2 Arena in London, England, has officially wrapped, which means that it's time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to 4 out of the 20 fighters on the card, and it's probably no surprise who's leaving "The Old Smoke" with a second sack of simoleons.

Carlos Condit took home "Knockout of the Night" after dropping Dan Hardy off at the corner of Left and Hook. The British bad boy talked a lot of trash heading into the Spike TV event, but in the end it was "The Natural Born Killer" who left him in a heap.

It was the second straight loss for Yoshihiro Akiyama in 2010 -- and also the second straight "Fight of the Night" bonus. "Sexyama" went three rounds with Michael Bisping in a battle for a place among the middleweight elite.

While it was Bisping for the win, don't "Count" Akiyama out of the division just yet.

In his UFC debut, Liverpool native Paul Sass unveiled his patented "Sassangle," strangling Mark Holst en route to his tenth submission win in 11 fights, which was sassy enough to secure him the "Submission of the Night" bonus.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 120:

Fight of the Night - Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
Knockout of the Night - Carlos Condit
Submission of the Night - Paul Sass

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC 120 results recap from London for 'Bisping vs Akiyama'

Posted: 16 Oct 2010 08:02 PM PDT

Ufc120recap_medium

UFC 120: "Bisping vs. Akiyama" took place earlier today (Oct. 16, 2010) from the O2 Arena in London, England.

Hot-and-cold middleweight Michael Bisping wanted to show the hometown crowd once and for all that he is indeed a contender for the promotion's 185-pound strap.

And after today's performance across the pond, not even International superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama can argue against him.

That's because "The Count" worked his way to a unanimous decision victory, surviving a "Sexy" onslaught in the opening round to eventually settle down and pull away in the second half of the fight.

There were eye-pokes and groin shots galore, but in the end, Bisping was both technical and methodical, while Akiyama seemed wild and desperate.

The hometown hero convinced the judges that he did enough to win -- but did he convince you that he's ready for a shot at the middleweight champion in 2011?

Dan Hardy vs. Carlos Condit served as the co-featured fight of the night, with each man trying to hold their place in line in what's quickly becoming a crowded 170-pound title picture.

In his last appearance, Hardy would last five rounds against division champion Georges St. Pierre, one of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters.

Tonight, he would last only one.

That's because Condit turned him from "Outlaw" to origami after folding him up with a thunderous left hook, one that crumpled the trash-talking Brit in front of his cheering fans. A few head bouncers would shut off the lights for good, and the "Natural Born Killer" has officially put the rest of his division on notice.

We already knew Condit had good jits. Now we now he has knockout power to go with it. Who's next for ever-improving Greg Jackson-disciple?

And how far down the ladder has Hardy tumbled?

Joining him at the drawing board is previously undefeated John Hathaway. "The Hitman" barely got a shot off in his three round fight with thirty-something scrapper Mike Pyle.

"Quicksand" lived up to his moniker, sinking Hathaway both on the ground and in the stand-up to earn the unanimous decision victory and push his Octagon record to 3-2.

Hathaway showed some of the grit and determination that made him such a promising young prospect, surviving a second round blitzkrieg that left him a little worse for the wear coming into the final frame.

The Brit will spend the rest of 2010 licking his wounds, but don't expect him to be out of the mix for very long. As for Pyle, it will be interesting if he can use the momentum from this upset win (listed as a +350 underdog) to catapult himself into bigger and better opportunities within the division.

Winner of Alves vs. Howard? Or loser of Shields vs. Kampmann?

Speaking of winners and losers, we got neither in the heavyweight mash-up between Cheick Kongo and Travis Browne. After three rounds of action, the jury was deadlocked at 28-28 and forced to rule this one a draw.

And Kongo has no one to blame but himself.

The Parisian got a bit overzealous with his hands, jerking and tugging at his opponent's shorts like a third grade prankster until referee Marc Goddard had seen enough of the tomfoolery and docked Kongo a point for the infraction.

It likely cost him the win.

Browne was game the entire fight, hanging tough and throwing leather. Ugly leather, but leather nonetheless. Aside from an unintentional ball mashing in the second stanza, Kongo did little to hurt his foe. He obviously has the size and the talent to compete in the UFC heavyweight division, but something seems to be missing.

Killer instinct? Gameplan? Anyone want to take a stab at what's keeping Kongo from breaking out of mediocrity?

These two certainly have a score to settle, but how many fans out there are clamoring to see it?

One person they may be inclined to ask for more of is Claude Patrick. "The Prince" was sheer royalty in his opening fight of the night against British banger James Wilks.

In fact, "Lightning" may have been lighting in a bottle in his Octagon debut. After winning The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale, Wilks is 1-2 under the UFC banner, including today's unanimous decision loss to Patrick, who extends his winning streak to twelve straight.

Is Wilks one loss a way from going back to the regional circuit? And is Patrick one win away from placing himself in the top ten rankings?

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Bisping vs. Akiyama" in the comments section below. Are you pleased with all the decisions and their outcomes? How did you score Kongo vs. Browne? Does Akiyama have a future as a UFC middleweight? Is Michael Bisping ready to challenge for 185-pound gold?

Sound off, Maniacs.

Melvin Guillard vs Yves Edwards targeted for Jan. 22 UFC event

Posted: 16 Oct 2010 10:15 AM PDT

Guillard-edwards_medium

We know who, we know when, we just don't know where (yet).

The UFC is assembling a Jan. 22 fight card, tentatively scheduled for Fort Hood, Texas, in what may be the promotion's next "Fight for the Troops" offering, featuring an interesting lightweight match-up between Melvin Guillard and Yves Edwards.

"The Young Assassin" tweeted the fight was greenlit; however, published reports confirm the 155-pound scrap but caution the venue and location have yet to be made official.

Guillard (26-8-2), or perhaps Guillard 2.0 now that he's under the tutelage of master trainer Greg Jackson, squeaked past Jeremy Stephens via split decision at last month's UFC 119 event in Indianapolis.

It was the third straight victory for the former Ultimate Fighter since checking in with his new camp, and a win over a tough veteran like Edwards could go a long way in moving him up the lightweight ranks in 2011.

In fact, the master of "Thugjitsu" could do some spring-boarding himself.

Edwards (39-16-1) made a triumphant return to the world's largest fight promotion when he took home a unanimous decision win over Luis Palamino at UFC Fight Night 22 back on Sept. 15.

Outside of the UFC, Edwards has competed under a majority of the major banners including PRIDE, Strikeforce, Bellator and Shooto. Defeating Guillard will undoubtedly put an exclamation point on his second coming.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information regarding the upcoming Jan. 22 event as it becomes available.

UFC 120: Is Dan Hardy a stepping stone -- or a scary mofo?

Quoteworthy:

"[Carlos Condit] admits this is the biggest fight of his UFC career and he wants to use me as a stepping stone to a shot at UFC champ Georges St-Pierre. That’s not happening. I want to send a message out that I’m back and I’m better than ever, and I’m still a legitimate contender for the belt. I think there were a lot of hopes riding on me for the last fight, with me being the first UK fighter to contend for the belt, and obviously I fell short, and I think a lot of fans were disappointed with that. So as a way of apologizing to the fans for my last performance, I want to put on a show and give them their money’s worth, and at the same time scare the hell out of the rest of the division and let them know that nobody’s safe."

"The Outlaw" is just hours away from his pivotal welterweight showdown with Carlos Condit at UFC 120, which will go down from the O2 Arena in London, England, tonight (Oct. 16) on Spike TV. Hardy wants to prove his loss to division champion Georges St. Pierre was the exception and not the rule, and believes a convincing performance over "The Natural Born Killer" will vault him back into the top of the 170-pound contender list. But even if the Brit is successful at home, does he still have to prove he can hang with a top wrestler? Or will they be too "scared" to even challenge him?
