Jon Fitch back in the UFC and will fight at UFC 94

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 05:52 PM CST

jon fitch
After a tumultuous 24 hours, during which he was abruptly terminated, former number one contender Jon Fitch is back on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) roster after a discussion with Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Feritta.

MMAmania.com spoke to Fitch, who described the conversation as, “good, really good.”

He also added this via MMARated.com shortly after getting the good news:

"Communication kind of broke down with Dana (White) so we talked with Lorenzo. (I) just got off the phone with him and we came to an agreement. We're going to move ahead and I'll be back in the UFC. We're going to sign off on the video game and I'm back. It was never even about the agreement or the contract. It was the approach that we felt Dana was being a little bit hot-headed and was threatening us right off the bat. It didn't seem like a professional way of doing things."

White and the management team at Zinkin Entertainment, which represents several of the fighters who train at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) where Fitch is stationed, had an explosive falling out over business-related agreements just yesterday.

In short, White made it clear that the fighters at AKA needed to sign a video game agreement that would give the promotion exclusive lifetime rights to their likenesses or risk losing their jobs. It was the “your either with us or your not approach.”

So when Fitch’s management team attempted to negotiate the terms, which were nonnegotiable, White escalated the situation and cut ties with the camp, terminating the promotional contracts of Fitch and stablemate, Christian Wellisch, shortly thereafter.

The move sent shockwaves through the entire mixed martial arts community, which was made more alarming when the president of the company indicated that others could be next who did not want to be “partners.” He indicated that the AKA contingent was historically the most troublesome when it came to the business side of things and that, essentially, he no longer wanted to work with them … and their fighters.

That included Fitch, who is tied with Royce Gracie and Anderson Silva for the most consecutive wins in UFC history (eight). He even just recently lost a gutsy unanimous decision to welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" on August 9.

The message was clear: No one (at AKA, anyway) was safe.

Fitch today took to the airwaves to please his side of the story, saying that his management team, in fact, eventually encouraged him to sign the the deal. But based on the way he was treated and the way the situation was handled, Fitch stood his ground and worked to find a solution to a situation that probably should have never happened.

That solution, of course, was Lorenzo Fertitta. He spoke with Feritta directly (he never spoke to White throughout the ordeal) to hammer out a resolution.

He signed the video game agreement and was reinstated shortly thereafter. In fact, he is once again scheduled to fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs Penn 2″ on January 31 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So in the end, cooler heads did indeed prevail. Now the focus can hopefully shift to what is really important, which is fighting … inside the Octagon.

THQ — the acclaimed video game development company — is scheduled to release “Undisputed” sometime in early 2009.

UFC 91 medical suspensions and injuries from NSAC

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 01:03 PM CST

ufc 86 medical suspensions

The Nevada State Athletic Commission recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 91: "Couture vs Lesnar," which took place on Saturday, November 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Surprisingly, welterweight fighter Tamdan McCrory was slapped with the stiffest medical sentence - but not for his arm or shoulder, which both took a wrong turn down submission street in his scrap with Dustin Hazelett.

"The Barn Cat" is out until May 15 of 2009 pending an X-ray on his right foot and ankle to rule out any possible fractures.

Jorge Gurgel, too, appears to be a little worse for the wear after his war with Aaron Riley, which also earned him a spot on the sidelines until late spring pending a shoulder MRI and ankle X-ray.

Other notables on the report include Randy Couture for eating multiple ham hocks as well as his opponent, Brock Lesnar, who’s out until December 16 with an eye laceration.

Here's the complete list of UFC 91 injuries and their medical instructions:

Randy Couture –- "The Natural" has been suspended for 60 days after his TKO loss.

Brock Lesnar -– "Ham Hock" is suspended for 30 days to allow his eye laceration to heal.

Josh Hendricks -– "Heavy" is suspended for 30 days after being on the receiving end of a technical knockout.

Tamdan McCrory -– "The Barn Cat" is suspended for 6 months pending multiple X-rays after being turned into Stretch Armstrong.

Aaron Riley -– "Guy Riley" is suspended for 30 days as a result of his three round war with Jorge Gurgel.

Jorge Gurgel -– "Little Richard" is suspended for 6 months and will have to undergo a shoulder MRI and ankle X-ray to determine whether or not he sustained any fractures.

Rafael dos Anjos -– The UFC newcomer is suspended for 60 days for being on the wrong end of a Jeremy Stephens Shoryuken.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Ultimate Fighter 8: Assistant coach James Horne sounds off on episode 10

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 12:44 PM CST

James Horne is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. He currently serves as an assistant coach under Frank on season eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 on Spike TV. He will provide a behind the scenes perspective as we head head into the homestretch of the series. This column is sponsored by Kill It Clothing.

Everyone needs a hug … at least that’s how John Polakowski feels and he let’s everyone know it every chance he gets.

Last night’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 may have seemed a bit weird to those watching the clips of John’s frequent big hugs while in the fighter house. To be honest, at first, it was a little weird having a dude you don’t know real well hugging everyone from both teams every day.

That’s right, he actually hugged EVERY PERSON from both teams EVERY TIME he saw them EVERY DAY. And we’re not talking about brief embraces … John brings you in for the real thing.

Always.

Regardless, John is genuinely a real nice person — he definitely won’t be getting into any street fights anytime soon. It was good to see that the latest episode took the time to capture that … even if it does come off a little kooky.

Because he’s such a laid back and friendly guy it was definitely odd to see him get so upset about someone removing all the marshmallows from his Lucky Charms. He definitely appeared to overreact, but perhaps that was his way of getting pumped up for the fight … who knows.

On a side note, the constant pranks throughout this season were beginning to get a little irritating as time wore on for the coaches … and we weren’t even living in the house. It seems like this group of guys, including their ring leader Krzysztof Soszynski, has taken it to an alarming level this season.
It’s clearly escalated beyond the point of “just good fun.”

So when Krzysztof — who is apparently always bored in the house — once again decided to stir the pot it was not a positive thing. Throwing pork chops and raw eggs off a balcony onto a group of fighters below is never a wise move … even if he may be able to beat up most of them.

Of course, of all people to hit, Krzysztof got Junie Browning — the dude with the shortest temper — not once but twice. Naturally, he didn’t just brush it aside, charging up the steps to confront Krzysztof.

Fortunately, Junie never made it through the door and it basically ended there. I was actually surprised it didn’t escalate further, considering Krzysztof and Junie were never on good terms after the first night in the house.

In short, Junie was actually better able to control his temper as the show progressed. Too bad Krzysztof controlled his number of pranks.

Anyway, back to the fight between Georges and John.

John had a very big edge heading into that fight — George Roop really hurt his hand bad in training. We called in Don House — one of the best boxing trainers and hand experts in the business — and Dr. Jon Petrick – and ART (active release therapy) practitioner — from Pain Relief Center in Las Vegas to assess the situation.

It wasn’t good.

But Don and Dr. Patrick worked some crazy magic and were a big factor in him being able to fight John so soon after damaging his hand. Roop’s toughness, too, should not be underestimated.

It definitely shows that he has incredible physical and mental fortitude to take the fight with his hand essentially mangled. The Team Mir plan going in to the fight against John was to try and preserve the hand and only use it if totally necessary.

Roop did a great job sticking to the plan and using his kicks to score nice points in that first round. In fact, according to the judges, he did better in the opening frame without the hand than using it in the second round.

Go figure.

Injury or not it was a close fight and more than likely should have gone to sudden victory. But it didn’t and Roop got the decision. That injury was by no means a “parachute” or a built-in excuse if he lost. It was legit and he is unbelievably tough for throwing his right hand the way he did to get the win.

Congrats, George.

The semifinal match up between George and Phillipe Nover, which was determined shortly after the bout, will be interesting because his hand is more messed up then the last fight.

He also took a little bit of a beating courtesy of John in the fight. He’s certainly banged up, which is not how you want to be heading into a fight against a guy like Phillipe.

The other semifinal pairings are also pretty intriguing.

Ryan Bader and Eliot Marshall are scheduled to collide in a light heavyweight showdown. Both fighters are ground guys — Bader is a wrestler and Marshall is a jiu-jitsu guy. The funny thing is they talked about keeping the fight standing and having a standup war.

Let’s see how that turns out.

In a great lightweight match up, Junie Browning and Efrain Escudero will finally get to settle their score. This is a great grudge match — it’s time to let their fists do the talking. I really can’t wait for this one.

And finally, former Team Quest training partners Krzysztof Soszynski and Vinny Magalhaes will battle for the final spot in the 205-pound final. It’s a bit strange, considering Krzysztof and Vinny used to train at the same camp and are both on Team Mir.

But the truth is they have only trained with each other a hand full of times so they don’t know each others games very well. It wouldn’t matter much anyway because both guys do two very different things — Krzysztof is a stand up guy and Vinny is a ground guy.

Not much to figure out there.

Anyway, at the end of the day Team Mir ends with a solid record (5-3) over Team Nogueira. It was a great battle, but now it’s time to get down to the serious business as we get closer to crowning two new TUF champions.

May the best men win.

Dana White elaborates on Jon Fitch release and stance on AKA …

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 10:28 AM CST

… and he’s clearly not as heated as last night but still miffed:

“This is not an attack on Jon Fitch. It’s not an attack on any one fighter. We have chosen not to do business with this camp called AKA. These guys have never, ever, ever treated us like partners. They’re always fighting over stupid, stupid (stuff) and negotiating over stuff that makes no sense. They’re negotiating like they’ve got Mel Gibson and this thing is the biggest movie ever being made. You know what I’m saying? The reality is, we’re not even sanctioned in Massachusetts or New York … (and) we’re going into all these different countries trying to do these different things. And I’ve got these guys that basically don’t want to be partners with me. You’ve got morons — morons — that are running these fighters’ lives. But to tell you the truth, one of the fighters from AKA called me and said, “Listen, I don’t care what these managers say or what they’re doing. I make my own decisions and my decision is, I’m with you. I’m your partner, I’m in.’ And this was before we even told AKA we wouldn’t be doing business with them any more. So this really isn’t an attack on Jon Fitch or any personal fighter. We’re just choosing not to do business with AKA any more. We’re not going to do business with them. And listen, there’s other guys out there that they can go do business with; they’re just not going to do business with me. Now there’s rumors out there, I know, about, ‘It’s over a video game deal. It’s over the ancillary rights agreement. It’s over this, that.’It’s over a lot of different things. It’s not one specific fighter or one specific thing. It’s about a lot of different things with a lot of these fighters. And you know what? This is more than just AKA. There’s other camps out there that we’re having trouble doing business with. And at the end of the day, this is a business. We run a business just like any other business. You come in, you do your job with your company and you get paid. And the guys that don’t want to do business with you — then go work somewhere else. It’s as easy as that. You don’t have to do business with us. There’s other people out there you can do it with.”

UFCs Goran Reljic saves two men from drowning in Croatia

Quoteworthy:

“A crash that almost killed two young men on the 15th of October at around 3 a.m. could have had disastrous consequences when the two young men, both from Privlaka, spun and crashed into the sea. Thankfully both men survived, due to the brave actions of Goran Reljic, the Croatian ultimate fighter, who resides in the immediate vicinity of the town in question. When he heard the crash, Goran jumped out of bed, still in his underwear and jumped into the sea. He swam to the car, proceeded to break the windshield of the vehicle and pull both men to land. Several eyewitness accounts confirm the story and so does Goran, who doesn’t want any praise or recognition for the good deed.”

Well he should because it sounds heroic and something that could be ripped from a Hollywood script. Reljic recently sustained a back injury while training for his upcoming 185-pound fight against Thales Leites (14-1) at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25, and was forced out of the bout. He is a 23-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter who stopped Wilson Gouveia via technical knockout in his debut performance for the promotion at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May. He trains with the Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in London, England, where he is a purple belt. Hopefully we see him healthy and back in the Octagon real soon.
