Chris Horodecki loses at ‘S-Cup 2008′ prior to Affliction fight against Dan Lauzon

Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon
Former International Fight League (IFL) posterboy and lightweight champion Chris Horodecki (12-1) is set to face Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon on the main card of Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” on January 24.

The original date for the event was October 11. With the postponement, Horodecki decided to stay busy by entering “S-Cup 2008″ — an eight-man Shootboxing tournament held in Japan over the weekend.

Shootboxing is basically mixed martial arts without the ground fighting. You can strike and throw your opponent and you can win with standing submissions, but there is essentially no ground fighting in Shootboxing.

The other seven combatants in the tournament were Denis Schneldmiller, Luiz Azeredo, Hiroki Shishido, Kenichi Ogata, Kenji Kanai, Edvin Kibus and two-time defending champion Andy Souwer.

Horodecki drew the 31-year-old Shishido in the first round — an experienced fighter, but one who he was more than likely favored to defeat. Shishido, however, managed to outwork and out score “The Polish Hammer” on the judges scorecards en route to a unanimous decision win.

The loss won’t go on Horodecki’s MMA record, but it is still a setback for the 21-year-old fighter who is heading into one of the biggest fights of his career.

Andy Souwer went on to win the tournament for the third straight year. He defeated Hiroki Shishido, Edvin Kibus and Kenichi Ogata en route to winning the title.

For what it’s worth, Lauzon also recently accepted a fight against Justin Hammertrum under the World Championship Fighting (WCF) banner before the showdown with Horodecki at “Day of Reckoning.”

The younger brother of UFC lightweight fighter and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum Joe Lauzon made his third straight start for the organization and fourth thus far in his career, scoring a first round technical knockout win in less than a minute.

Momentum … could it be a factor?

What should we take from this fight? Is "Sasha" calm and calculating? Or slow and sloppy?

Strikeforce: "Destruction" took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Friday, November 21, 2008.

In the main event of the evening, former Elite XC number one 185-pound contender Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith lived up to his nickname, knocking out knockout artist Terry Martin cold just 24 seconds into their middleweight scrap.

And in the co-main event of the evening talented Brazilian jiu-jitsu player Renato "Babalu" Sobral carved up Bobby Southworth with a vicious elbow to capture the promotion’s 205-pound title.

Strikeforce sent around the pictures below of the event — check ‘em out after the jump when you have some time. For detailed results of “Destruction” click here.

HDNet reaches television agreements with DREAM and K-1

Posted: 24 Nov 2008 06:48 PM CST

Mark Cuban’s premium cable and satellite channel, HDNet, recently inked an extension with Japanese-based mixed martial arts promotion DREAM, giving the network exclusive rights to air the promotion’s events in North America through 2009.

Here’s the thoughts from Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights, on the extension:

“We’re very happy to expand and continue this successful partnership with FEG USA, Inc. DREAM is known for having the best MMA tournaments and superfights in the world and clearly has the greatest production and fighter entrances in the sport. This partnership solidifies our commitment to being THE Home of MMA.”

HDNet has already aired four DREAM events since a partnership was announced between the two parties back in May 2008. DREAM 3 was the first of the bunch to air live. DREAM 4, 5, and 6 have all since been broadcast live on the network, too.

Mike Kogan of FEG USA Inc. is also pleased with the deal. Here are his thoughts on more future DREAM events being aired on HDNet:

“It has been a good year for DREAM. We are glad that FEG is able to continue its partnership with HDNet and bring more DREAM action to North American Fans.”

HDNet also recently struck a deal with K-1 to air 12 events in 2009 — six from the K-1 tournament and six from the K-1 MAX tournament.

The December 6, 2008, K-1 World Grand Prix Final event will kick off the partnership. The broadcast will begin at 9:00 p.m. ET on fight night. Here’s the announced card for the show thus far:

  • 3-time Grand Prix Champion and K-1 Legend Peter Aerts (93-26-1) vs K-1 Heavyweight Champion Badr Hari (75-7-1)
  • Errol Zimmerman (74-7-1, 1 NC), Ewerton Teixeira (7-0)
  • Gokhan Saki (74-9, 1 NC), Ruslan Karaev (18-6)
  • Two-time Grand Prix Champion Remy Bonjasky (79-14) and Jerome Le Banner (91-15-1, 1 NC)

HDNet continues to distance themselves from all other networks as the number one spot on television to view mixed martial arts and combat sports. Remember that the network also boasts working relationships with Strikeforce, Adrenaline MMA and recently bought the entire video library of past International Fight League (IFL) events as well.

And it only seems to be getting better.

Like a fine wine …

Kimbo Slice the actor to make debut on Nickelodeon’s ‘Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh’ Dec. 5

Posted: 24 Nov 2008 01:54 PM CST

Just because he lost in 14 seconds to UFC washout and replacement fighter Seth Petruzelli and just because his biggest supporters, Elite XC, aren’t around anymore, doesn’t mean there isn’t still a market for Kimbo Slice.

Indeed, people are interested in his services, but it’s not as a fighter (not yet, anyway).

Perhaps this a little hard to believe, but Slice will make his Nickelodeon acting debut on “Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh,” which is set to premiere on the kid-friendly network on Friday, December 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

The Christmas special is a television movie based on the popular sitcom, which ran from January 2004 through September of 2007, about two step brothers who are complete opposites but forced to live with each other and become friends because of their parents’ marriage.

“Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh” will be the third television movie spin off from the series and the first since the show went off the air a little more than a year ago.

Kimbo will be play a character by the name of “Bludge” — a bully that struggles with how he should treat people yet somehow helps Drake and Josh keep a promise they made to a group of less fortunate children.

This gig is a far cry from punching people in the face for a living for the infamous street fighter turned professional mixed martial artist. But a fighter’s still gotta eat … this should keep the bread on the table for the time being.

Eddie Alvarez next fight set for Extreme Challenge on Jan. 23

Posted: 24 Nov 2008 11:31 AM CST

It’s more than likely not a showdown with Nick Diaz or a rematch against Joachim Hansen … but it’s something.

Former Elite XC fighter and 2008 DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix show stealer, Eddie Alvarez (15-1), will make his return to competition at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, N.J., on January 23 under the Extreme Challenge banner.

An opponent for the Philadelphia native has not been announced at this time.

Here’s a snip from Alvarez discussing the fight during a recent interview with iGuillotine.com:

“The only thing I know 100 percent sure right now is January 23 I’ll be fighting here in Atlantic City at the Tropicana. You know, bring it back home. I’ve been fighting overseas a lot lately, and the jet lag and everything else, it’s good to just drive 40 minutes from home, get a fight and then go home and rest.”

Alvarez was supposed to face off against Nick Diaz for the vacant Elite XC lightweight title on November 8, but the event was canceled less than a month out after the promotion apparently filed for bankruptcy and called it quits.

The fight was set to be the second of a three fight deal he signed with Pro Elite back in January. After his debut with the company that same month — a relatively easy second round stoppage over Ross Ebanez — he was invited to compete in the Japanese promotion DREAM’s lightweight grand prix.

Picked by many to be a dark horse in the 16-man tournament, Alvarez defeated Dida Amade, Joachim Hansen and Tatsuya Kawajiri en route to a spot in the final against Shinya Aoki. However, he was unable to face Aoki because of some swelling around his eyes he suffered during his semi-final bout against Kawajiri.

That was the official explanation, anyway.

Hansen filled in for him in the final, defeating Aoki to win the tournament and earn the first-ever DREAM lightweight title. Afterwards, Hansen announced to the crowd that Alvarez would get the first crack at his belt.

That match, however, has yet to come to fruition.

A lot of people figured the Hansen fight to be Eddie’s next match, but most of the fighters who were under contract with Pro Elite are still wondering what’s going to happen with their old deals. Eddie’s situation, however, is a little bit different according to his manager Monte Cox, who also happens to run Extreme Challenge.

Here’s a snip from a recent Sherdog.com feature:

"Eddie's contract with Pro Elite was also a contract with Adrenaline and Extreme Challenge, and also a contract with Dream. That contract allowed him to fight in any of those places. (Pro Elite) only owned a piece of Eddie. I put in his contract that he would fight in EliteXC and then Extreme Challenge, Adrenaline, or Dream. We were alternating. The deal also says if one of the organizations doesn't schedule a fight or is unable to put on a fight, they lose a turn."

It all sounds quite confusing, but at least we know it won’t be much longer before we get to see this kid back in the cage doing what he does best. We’ll let you know as soon as an opponent is announced.

Frank Edgar earns Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt under Ricardo Almeida

Posted: 24 Nov 2008 10:51 AM CST

Frank Edgar recently earned a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu while training at Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu in Hamilton, N.J., according to TheGarv.com.

Almeida — the star pupil of Renzo Gracie — is a world champion jiu-jitsu player who has also competed in mixed martial arts as a professional in the UFC, Pride FC and Pancrase since 2000. He is among the top grapplers in the sport today.

In short, he knows a thing or two about good ground skills, which makes the promotion of Edgar that much more impressive.

“The Answer” is a decorated high school (Toms River High School East) and collegiate (Clarion University) wrestler out of Toms River, N.J. He currently moonlights as an assistant wrestling coach at Rutgers University.

Thanks to his strong wrestling credentials and experience, Edgar made a successful transition to mixed martial arts in 2005. In fact, he rattled off eight consecutive wins to begin his professional career — and he didn’t do it against tomato cans, either.

Jim Miller, Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek and Spencer Fisher are just a few of the notable opponents who Edgar has handled, which has helped him rise to the top of the very crowded UFC 155-pound division in short order.

Edgar recently rebounded from the first professional loss of his career to Gray Maynard (unanimous decision) at UFC Fight Night 13 to outpoint former number one contender Hermes Franca on all three judges scorecards at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin" in July.

The latter bout was dubbed the "Fight of the Night," earning Edgar and Franca each an additional $25,000 for their performances. It came as no surprise — Edgar is often involved in action-packed battles.

He’ll get to put his new belt to the test soon enough. Edgar is slated to co-headline UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” against Matt Wiman at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., on Wednesday, December 10.

And you can watch him do it live on Spike TV, beginning at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

Alistair Overeem: ‘Wimpy Cro Cop’ hasn’t signed on to fight me

Posted: 24 Nov 2008 09:44 AM CST

"I'm afraid Mirko is trying to run from me again. FEG wants to make it happen, I would like nothing more than get my hands on him again and I know that the fans would like to see a definite ending as well, so the only obstacle here is Cro Cop. He's the one who hasn't signed the contract yet and he's the one who is trying to avoid fighting me again because he knows that he will get his ass kicked again. I won't use any knee strikes to the body this time, so he won't have any chance to wimp out of the fight again.”

– Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion and former PRIDE star Alistair Overeem calls out bitter rival Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on Sherdog.com for being all talk and no action. The two were expected to rematch on December 31 to settle a previous No Contest from their bout at September’s DREAM 6. "Demolition Man" delivered several illegal groin strikes during the bout, providing a disappointing conclusion to a fight that had received much interest and fanfare leading up to it. Cro Cop promised to deliver a rematch on December 31 but Overeem says the Croatian has yet to put pen to paper.
