Martin Kampmann signs UFC contract extension to fight at welterweight

Posted: 07 Nov 2008 08:26 AM CST

Martin Kampmann recently inked a new four-fight contract extension with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com, ensuring that the Danish striker continues to throw down inside the Octagon against top flight competition.

However, "The Hitman" will do it as a welterweight — the former top middleweight contender will follow in the footsteps of Mike Swick and try his luck in the 170-pound division.

Kampmann was always undersized at 185 pounds. It didn't stop him, however, from stringing together four consecutive UFC wins, including a unanimous decision over current top 185 performer, Thales Leites, back in November 2006.

His lack of size and strength really came into focus in his most recent tilt against Nate Marquardt at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" two months ago. Marquardt overpowered and bullied Kampman en route to a crushing 82-second first round technical knockout.

It marked the first loss for the X-Treme Couture-trained fighter inside the Octagon and just the second of his career.

Kampmann will certainly add more depth to the talent-laden welterweight division. His road to an eventual title shot, unfortunately for him, is likely now much longer. But it's not crazy to assume that he could be in the thick of things sooner rather than later with a few impressive wins.

There is no timetable for his welterweight debut at this time.

Crossing the threshold: Increasing anaerobic endurance with MMA Stack

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir said it best in episode seven of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8:

“People can take physical pain, people can take mental anguish, but cardio pain crushes everybody.”

The same reason Junie Browning couldn’t finish Rolando Delgado on TUF 8 is the same reason Mauricio “Shogun” Rua lost to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: Low anaerobic threshold.

Combat sports falls under the anaerobic umbrella because it requires a great deal of power output in a short period of time. The energy is quickly available, but short term energy stores are rapidly depleted, lactic acid builds up and exercise soon comes to a halt (SportsMed 97).

Once the production of lactate (lactic acid) by the anaerobic system is greater than its removal, lactate begins to accumulate in the bloodstream and the body must return to a state of rest to recover.

How do you know when you’ve reached your anaerobic threshold? When you’re out of breath! When the energy supplied by your breathing is insufficient to sustain your activity, you have reached your anaerobic threshold.

This is why so many mixed martial arts fighters falter as they go deeper into a fight. They may have excellent aerobic endurance, but their body is not conditioned for the quick bursts of power that only anaerobic endurance can provide.

The key is to find a balance between aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. The treadmill is of course a must, but so are sprints. Despite what you may have heard, slow and steady doesn’t always win the race!

Your training should also include interval work consisting of a repeated series of short, high intensity bursts with alternating rest periods. Constantly changing levels and speeds to mimic the frequent stopping and starting of close range combat is the only way to prepare for three or even five rounds inside the cage.

Unless of course you’re “elusive” enough to avoid contact altogether.

For those of us however who make it a point to engage, I bring good news. Feel it! Nutrition is offering $20 off its MMA Stack.

Don’t worry about trying to figure out what nutritional supplements are going to help you increase your anaerobic threshold. Once again the Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research for you and assembled the most comprehensive stack available to help you achieve your goals.

MMA Stack consists of the following cutting-edge supplements:

Protein Powder: Pro Lab Pure Whey Chocolate (5 lb.)
Creatine: Axis Labs Creatine Ethyl Ester (240 Capsules)
L-Glutamine: ISS Complete L-Glutamine Power (14.1 oz.)
Amino Acids: Universal Amino 1000 (500 Capsules)

The key to using MMA Stack is incorporating it into your fight preparation. Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, notorious for his high anaerobic threshold, begins training for a fight about twelve weeks out.

In addition to lifting weights and strengthening his fast-twitch muscle fibers, Sherk also trains grappling, striking, distance cardio, swimming, wind sprints and the dreaded running of the bleachers.

Of course his regimen wouldn’t be complete without the proper nutritional supplements and neither should yours. With the addition of MMA Stack you can take yourself to the next level.

If you’re stepping into the cage with an opponent who matches up evenly with you, the difference in the fight could come down to which fighter has the higher anaerobic threshold.

Just imagine if UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn had used MMA Stack prior to his bout with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 58!

KJ Noons the boxer next fight set for Nov. 13

Posted: 06 Nov 2008 03:20 PM CST

The first and only man to hold the Elite XC lightweight title, KJ Noons, will officially make his return to boxing one week from today when he faces Alejandro Bogarin (8-6-3, 2 knockouts) at the Expo Center in El Monte, Calif., on Thursday, November 13.

Bogarin is a 29-year-old Mexican fighter who is coming off a knockout loss in July to Fransisco Santana. He was eventually knocked out by a body shot in the fight, but Santana worked him over pretty good throughout the bout.

Based on his record and his six career losses by knockout this looks like a winnable fight for KJ.

KJ sports an impressive professional boxing record of (7-1, 5 knockouts), but has not competed in a licensed match in well over a year. He’ll come in riding a three-fight win streak in the sport. His one loss came on a razor close decision to Daniel Stanislavjevic almost three years ago.

He signed on with Pro Elite under the circumstances that he could pursue both his mixed martial arts and boxing careers. When he won the 160-pound title last November over Nick Diaz his focus obviously began to turn more toward MMA.

But the Hawaiian native never lost his desire to box.

When he and Elite XC could not agree to terms on a rematch with Diaz, he was stripped of his title. Because of that, Noons decided to switch back to boxing for the time being or until the two sides could work out their differences.

Now that Pro Elite has filed for bankruptcy a return to mixed martial arts is more likely for Noons in the future. The issue now is who the apparent free agent will sign with and just how far he actually chooses to pursue this boxing thing.

Time will tell.

Hermes Franca arrested in Jupiter under suspicion of DUI

Quoteworthy:

“Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight competitor, Hermes Franca, was arrested last night by the Jupiter Police Department in Jupiter, Fla for a DUI offense … According to the report, Franca was arrested at 2:38am by an officer who suspected the fighter was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

It’s been a seesaw ride for the former UFC 155-pound number contender Hermes Franca the last 18 months. He recently returned from a 12-month steroids suspension, losing to Frank Edgar in his July comeback fight and then rebounding against his former Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher Marcus Aurelio at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” just last month. Now this. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Jamie Varner vs Donald Cerrone WEC title fight now likely in early 2009

Posted: 06 Nov 2008 11:41 AM CST

“The winner of this fight is just another guy in my way.”

WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner hinted earlier this week that the winner of last night’s 155-pound showdown between former champion “Razor” Rob McCullough and star in the making Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone could determine the next contender for his crown at a tentatively scheduled January 25 event in San Diego, California.

There has been no confirmation from the WEC, but since Cerrone emerged victorious from the fight he now seems like the most logical selection for the next challenger to Varner’s division crown.

The Team Greg Jackson trainee put a beating on the former champ for three full rounds and looked to be on his way to a stoppage on more than one occasion before finally pulling out the decision. To his credit, “Razor” Rob was a game opponent and stayed competitive throughout the contest, but all eyes were on Donald Cerrone following the WEC 36 “Fight of the Night.”

“Cowboy” was featured on the fourth episode of season one of the “Tapout” reality series — a show that features up and coming fighters. The episode was titled “The Search Continues” and originally aired on August 1, 2007.

He tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide — a dietary supplement that acts by inhibiting the kidneys’ ability to retain water — following a 54-second victory over Kenneth Alexander in his WEC debut last September. It was later overturned to a no contest by the athletic commission.

The no contest remains the only blemish on Cerrone’s otherwise impressive resume. He has a record of (9-0) thus far in his career, having won all three fights under the WEC banner. The decision win over McCullough last night was the first time in his career he had been taken past the second round.

He’s young at only 25-years-old and relatively inexperienced with only nine career mixed martial arts fights. But “Cowboy” — who was also an accomplished Muay Thai specialist before transitioning to the sport — is as worthy a number one contender as there is in the WEC right now.

Make no mistake, he’s a legitimate threat to Jamie Varner if the two do indeed lock horns in January.

MMA Quick Quote: Paulo Filho cornered by Team Jesus

Posted: 06 Nov 2008 10:24 AM CST

“What is he looking at? WHO IS HE LOOKING AT? I feel like I’m watching the movie with Woody Harrelson and he [Paulo Filho] is talking to Jesus or someone in the middle of the ring. Who is in there talking to him?”

– WEC ringside announcer Frank Mir (along with the rest of the fans who witnessed the fight) was clearly puzzled by the performance and actions of WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho in the cage last night against Chael Sonnen at WEC 36: “Faber vs. Brown.” The Brazlian jiu-jitsu phenom — who had been widely considered a consensus top five 185-pound fighter in the world — was a shell of his former self at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. He flopped around on the floor and barely mustered any sort of attack in the 15 minute bout, which he lost via unanimous decision. Perhaps the most bizarre and alarming aspect was Filho looking off into the crowd while engaged, talking to himself and appearing lost after the fight when he didn’t seem to know which corner was his. Filho has had issues with depression and chemical dependency in the last 12 months or so. And it appears that he still has to be dealing with them — he is clearly not well. Hopefully those around him (physically) can ensure he gets the help he needs sooner rather than later.
