Cub Swanson vs Hiroyuki Takaya WEC fight set for Dec. 3

Cub Swanson vs. Hiroyuki Takaya

According to a recent post on Cub Swanson’s MySpace page, he has signed to fight Hiroyuki Takaya (9-5-1) on the undercard of WEC 37, which is set to take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 3.

Swanson (12-2) saw his 11-fight win streak come to a halt last December on the WEC 31 card when he was faced with the unenviable task of fighting Jens Pulver in what was the former UFC lightweight champion’s WEC debut. “Little Evil” submitted him 35 seconds into round one.

The loss was certainly a step back for a fighter who was coming off back-to-back wins in the WEC against Tommy Lee and Micah Miller, respectively. He took a fight in a much smaller show against Donnie Walker (11-6) a little more than two months later and won by submission in the third round.

By the time he faces Takaya on December 3, it will have been just two weeks shy of a year since he last competed on a WEC card.

Takaya is coming off a loss in his last WEC fight as well. He ran into a Leonard Garcia punch in February at WEC 32 and got knocked out cold in only 1:31. He’s faced some tough competition in his career thus far, including JZ Cavalcante, Dida Amade, Gilbert Melendez and others.

Coming into the bout with Garcia he was a highly regarded featherweight and considered a top prospect for the company. A lot of outlets, in fact, listed him among their top ten featherweights in the world.

Zuffa has been known to put two guys against each other in a fight that are both coming off losses. Two guys that need a win badly usually makes for an action packed fight.

This one should easily live up to expectations.

Manager: Paulo Filho to send Chael Sonnen WEC belt

filho sonnen
The last man to hold the WEC middleweight title before the extinction of the division from the organization, Paulo Filho, has vowed to send his championship belt to Chael Sonnen following Wednesday’s unanimous decision loss at WEC 36.

Originally the bout was scheduled to be for Filho’s title anyway, but the Brazilian weighed in at a staggering seven pounds overweight, forcing officials to adjust the match to a three round non-title affair.

After the weigh-in, representatives from Filho’s camp assured Matt Lindland — who trains Sonnen at Team Quest — that if Sonnen were to win the belt would be handed over in the ring as a sign of respect.

It never happened.

That could be because Filho seemed like he was on another planet during and after the fight. In fact, according to his manager Ed Soares via SI.com, Filho didn’t even know the fight was over when he returned to the locker room following the three round decision.

He was incoherent, delirious and during his post-fight examination he had one pupil dilated much larger than the other, prompting doctors to order him to a local hospital.

Even before he stepped in the cage, Filho was publicly battling depression issues as well as substance abuse problems, which actually led to the rematch getting postponed from March to November 5. It was believed that he had overcome his personal issues and that we’d be seeing the best Paulo Filho in the cage during the fight.

Obviously that wasn’t that case.

Filho was once considered by most to be a top 185-pound mixed martial artist in the world, but he’s clearly not the same man or fighter any longer. Just how far he has fallen is anyone’s gue — he resembles nothing at all close to the fighter or man who was at one time considered to be among the best in the business.

Hopefully, Filho can get the help he needs to get himself together. Honoring his promise to Sonnen — who promised his father on his death bed before the fight the he would win a world title — is a step in the right direction.

Jacob ‘Stitch’ Duran: ‘I get off on the blood’

Posted: 08 Nov 2008 10:25 AM CST

“”MMA is far bloodier than boxing. These guys will have multiple cuts—the middle of their forehead, their scalp. Head cuts bleed a lot. And the cuts are deeper, because of the elbows and knees. It’s bone on bone…. I see so many cuts, [fixing them] is automatic for me. It’s poetry in motion.”"

ESPN the Magazine has a great article this month on the best cut man in the business, Jacob “Stitch” Duran. It talks about how he made it to where he is today and how his unique approach to closing cuts has helped several fighters, including UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin, continue to compete after getting busted open “as wide as an elevator door.” Very cool article. Very different … go check it out.

WEC medical suspensions and injuries for ‘Faber vs Brown’

medical suspensions
The Florida State Boxing Commission recently issued its medical suspensions for the WEC 36 event that took place this past Wednesday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on November 5, revealing that seven fighters in all will have to sit out of action.

New featherweight champion Mike Brown has been suspended indefinitely because of some torn cartilage between in his ribs that he suffered during his main event win over Urijah “The California Kid” Faber. He’ll have to get clearance from a doctor before he can return to competition.

Here's the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:

Mike Brown — Out indefinitely with torn rib cartilage. He’ll need clearance from a doctor to return to the cage

Urijah Faber — "The California Kid" will be out of action for 30 days following his technical knockout loss

Jens Pulver – Out for 30 days following his technical knockout loss to Leonard Garcia

Nissen Osterneck — Out for 30 days following his technical knockout loss to Jake Rosholt

Jonathan Brookins — Out for 30 days following his technical knockout loss to Jose Aldo

Rafael Dias — Out for 30 days following his technical knockout loss to Danny Castillo

David Avellan — Out for 60 days following his knockout loss to Aaron Simpson

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.
