Nate Quarry expects UFC 91 fight against Demian Maia to end early

Quoteworthy:

“He’s just a great fighter. All of his fights, he’s just looking to finish the whole time. He brings that definite Jiu Jitsu coming at you, gotta tap him out, gotta be working the whole time attitude. I really respect everything he’s done. All his accomplishments in Jiu Jitsu and being undefeated in his fighting career. I think it makes for an exciting fight, especially for the fans. Nobody really wants to see decisions. They want to see the fights end and that’s what both of us are going to try to do.”

Nate Quarry discusses his upcoming middleweight bout against undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15. “The Rock” will be out to notch his third consecutive win since returning from major back surgery little more than one year ago. On the flip side, Maia — a 2007 Abu Dhabi tournament winner — has won all three of his 185-pound fights inside the Octagon since his debut with the promotion in October 2007, earning “Submission of the Night” honors each time out. If he were to make it four straight he’s likely set a record if he hasn’t already.

UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva fight talk

Posted: 10 Nov 2008 10:03 AM CST

"I think the fight will be the synthesis of the modern MMA, will have everything: takedowns, striking and I think we'll do everything that exists in MMA, and the fight might be a stand up one. I consider you a tough guy, but I think my technique is superior.”

– Lyoto Machida talks to Thiago Silva via Tatame.com about their monster light heavyweight clash set for UFC 94 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. It’s a battle of unbeaten Brazilians that was originally scheduled for UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" on October 18; however, Silva had to withdraw from the contest because of a back injury sustained during training. The winner of the 205-pound bout will likely earn the next title shot or at the very least be near the top along with the winner of the UFC 92 bout between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Wanderlei Silva.

Joe Stevenson gets jiu-jitsu black belt before big UFC 91 fight (Video update)

Posted: 10 Nov 2008 09:32 AM CST

Two Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts will collide in the co main event at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” on November 15 — something we could not say before this weekend.

Joe Stevenson earned his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from worldclass grappler Robert Drysdale this past Saturday, providing “Daddy” with a little lift heading into his important clash with Kenny Florian at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to MMADHOUSE.com.

The ceremony, which was apparently 13 years in the making, took place at Stevenson’s Cobra Kai gym Victorville, California.

Here’s a snip from Drysdale:

“Joe learns really quickly so training him makes it easy for me. Joe has a really good top game. He also has a really solid guillotine. And that fact that Joe learns quick when we train makes him good. Some guys take forever to learn new stuff and they can't get it together…. Joe's skill level is without a doubt better than 95 percent of the black belts.”

That’s quite a compliment from one of the most decorated, accomplished and cutting-edge grapplers alive today. Drysdale is not only the head Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor at X-Treme Couture, he is also the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Open Weight winner.

And that’s just scratching the surface … we don’t have enough time or space to go into all his career accomplishments.

Long story short, it says a lot about the ground skills of Stevenson. He has finished nearly half his 29 professional wins via submission, possessing a dangerous guillotine choke that his most recent opponents simply can’t avoid and/or escape — three of his last four wins have come courtesy of the hold).

He’ll look to make it four out of his last five against Florian this Saturday night.

UPDATE: Check out videos from the ceremony after the jump.
