WEC payouts and salaries for ‘Faber vs Brown’

Posted: 07 Nov 2008 04:11 PM CST

MMAmania.com today received the fighter payouts from the Florida State Boxing Commission for WEC 36: “Faber vs. Brown,” which took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on November 5.

And there were a few surprises.

First of all, we knew Chael Sonnen would receive a quarter of Paulo Filho’s purse for the fight because of the champ’s inability to make weight. That came out to $10,250, brining Sonnen’s paycheck on the night to an impressive $48,250 and making him the breadwinner for the event.

Jens “Little Evil” Pulver pulled in the second most amount of scratch in a losing effort to Leonard Garcia. He earned $33,000 for 1:12 of work.

The event’s headliner — and the face of the organization — Urijah Faber cashed in on a measly $14,000. That’s $30,000 less than he made for his win over Pulver at WEC 34.

Here are all the WEC 36 payouts:

Mike Brown — $18,000 ($9,000 to show, $9,000 to win)
Urijah “The California Kid” Faber — $14,000
Brown defeated Faber via technical knockout in round one

Chael Sonnen — $48,250 ($19,000 to show, $19,000 to win)
Paulo Filho — $30,750
Sonnen defeated Filho via unanimous decision

Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia — $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Jens “Little Evil” Pulver — $33,000
Garcia defeated Pulver via technical knockout in round one

Jake Rosholt — $22,000 ($11,000 to show, $11,000 to win)
Nissen Osterneck — $4,000
Rosholt defeated Osterneck via technical knockout in round two

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone — $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win)
“Razor” Rob McCullough — $18,000
Cerrone defeated McCullough via unanimous decision

Aaron Simpson — $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win)
David Avellan — $3,000
Simpson defeated Avellan via knockout in round one

Jose Aldo — $8,000 ($4,000 to show, $4,000 to win)
Jonathan Brookings — $3,000
Aldo defeated Brookings via technical knockout in round three

Carmelo Marrero — $8,000 ($4,000 to show, $4,000 to win)
Steve Steinbess — $6,000
Marrero defeated Steinbess via split decision

Danny Castillo — $6,000 ($3,000 to show, $3,000 to win)
Rafael Dias — $3,000
Castillo defeated Dias via technical knockout in round one

Rani Yahya — $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win)
Yoshiro Maeda — $6,000
Yahya defeated Maeda via submission (guillotine) in round one

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, promotions often hand out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night." To check out these figures for WEC 36 go here.

The total base fighter payroll for event was $287,000.

Pro Elite attempts to stop CBS and Showtime public auction

Posted: 07 Nov 2008 03:38 PM CST

We reported earlier this week about the intentions of Showtime Networks Inc. to host a public auction on November 17 with whatever remains of Pro Elite Inc., including the video library, fighter contracts and other items.

Pro Elite Inc. was indebted to the premium cable network to the tune of 6.3 million dollars, which was accumulated through various loans. Showtime is apparently under the impression that because Pro Elite defaulted on the loans that the company has the right to take possession of its most valuable assets moving forward.

Pro Elite, however, sees it differently. In fact, according to the Media Daily News the organization plans to take legal action to try and stop the auction from happening.

Here’s a snip:

“With Showtime primed to sell its assets, a mixed martial arts promoter isn't going down without a fight. ProElite, which has aired MMA matches on the pay cable network, said Thursday that it plans to block the public auction.”

Clearly, there’s some behind the scenes work for the two parties legal teams to sort through before we hear anything definitive on this matter.

Since the demise of the Elite XC, the fighters who were under contract with them have been left scratching their heads trying to figure out what to do next. Several of them, including Nick Diaz, have filed a breach of contract complaint in attempts to become free agents after 30 days.

Pro Elite, on the other hand, has denied filing for bankruptcy and claims it will continue on with business as usual in 2009, meaning its fighters would still be responsible for fulfilling their contracts.

The relationship between CBS/Showtime and Pro Elite Inc. does not appear to be so rosy these days. And yesterday there were reports that the California State Athletic Commission had suspended the company’s promotional license.

Therefore, if the organization does indeed want to move forward with operations, those are at least two major hurdles standing in their way.

Clearly all this chaos doesn’t appear to be leading toward a happy ending for anybody. These two sides could be in store for a long drawn out legal mess.

Joe Stevenson motivated to defeat Kenny Florian at UFC 91 thanks to BJ Penn loss

Quoteworthy:

“I still think about [the loss to BJ Penn]. I have to. It’s what keep me motivated and makes me train harder. If we don’t remember our past, we can’t go forward. I have a Hawaiian wife man. She brings it up every time we argue…. I’m fighting to be a champion. I want that belt; there is no other reason. I’ve fought for free and I’ll probably fight for free before I die again, but I’m going to bring it.”

Joe Stevenson will look to re-establish his status as the number one lightweight title contender when he takes on Kenny Florian at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” in the co-featured bout of the evening on November 15. “Daddy” lost his bid to become the 155-pound world champion when he and BJ Penn collided earlier this year at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire.” Stevenson sustained a gruesome cut in the bout, which eventually ended in the second round thanks to a rear naked choke from “The Prodigy.” Stevenson is not the only one who still thinks about that fight — the pictures of him after the loss are some of the best ever. Unless, of course, MMAmania.com readers can trump the Stevenson pic with others from 2008 that are equally as gripping in the comments section below.

UFC Quick Quote: Luis Cane wants to fight the best … like Keith Jardine

Posted: 07 Nov 2008 09:08 AM CST

“Maybe they put me against (Keith) Jardine, a tough fighter, another Top 10, but I won't choose opponents. I'll wait for Joe Silva decide who I'll fight and I'm sure it won't be easy, they'll put me another great fighter and that's what I want. I'm ready for that and I want to be between the best.”

– Luis Cane tells Tatame.com that he is ready to challenge the top fighters in the UFC light heavyweight division. “Banha” destroyed Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via second round technical knockout at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” just last month. It was his second straight win — the Brazilian heel stopped Jason Lambert at UFC 85: “Bedlam” back in June. His only loss is to James Irvin, which was ruled a disqualification because of an errant knee to the face. The 27-year-old fighter is tough as nails and comes prepared to bang, making any match up with a top 205-pound competitor a juicy one.
