The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8: Episode 8 recap and discussion

Posted: 05 Nov 2008 08:59 PM CST

Episode eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 is now underway and after the recap of Magalhaes vs. Bruchez, we cut back to the TUF mansion where Team Red is eating more fruit than the cast of ‘Queer as Folk’.

An unsuspecting Tom Lawlor returns from training to find his daily fruit platter has once again been ravaged beyond recognition by Team Blue and vows immediate revenge.

He takes a new, freshly delivered fruit platter and urinates all over it in the hopes that the mid-morning fruit-nappers will consume the yellow sangria and get drunk on remorse. He even invites his fellow team members to contribute their unholy yellowness to which they gleefully oblige.

The fruit is then returned to the fridge in its amber tomb and now all we can do is wait for the inevitable.

In the meantime, everyone heads over to the gym for the lightweight fight selection. Coach Mir chooses Dave Kaplan to face Coach Nogueira’s number one pick Phillipe Nover. Mir is convinced that Kaplan’s granite chin and Ernesto Hoost-trained striking will baffle Nover en route to a shocking loss. Coach Nogueira does not concur.

Afterward, Team Red returns to the house and predictably dives right into the infected fruit platter. They spend the next few minutes enjoying themselves (and some of Team Blue) until Kaplan drops the P-Bomb and the fruity felons scatter in a nauseating panic.

Ryan Bader and Kyle Kingsbury don’t really seem too bothered by the ingestion of another man’s excrement, while Phillipe Nover is considering having his stomach pumped.

With the silliness behind them, Team Blue goes into training mode and Kaplan gives us some of his credentials which on the surface are rather impressive. Coach Mir professes his attachment to him and calls Kaplan “Devastating on his feet”.

Kaplan is also devastating in the fridge, as Phillipe Nover hears from Efrain Escudero that Kaplan has been devouring Nover’s sushi platter on a daily basis before he can get his hands on it.

Fruit platter, part deux.

Kyle Kingsbury leads the charge and decides what better way to punish the sushi stealer than by dropping a billion and one offspring into the center of a California roll.

Now I know how this episode got named “Splushi”.

In the gym, Junie Browning complains that he’s the only one training at full-speed and that the lack of effort from his teammates leaves him feeling alone in his quest to become a better fighter. He takes particular exception to Dave Kaplan, who Junie feels doesn’t want anything to do with the lightweights despite being one himself.

Coach Mir dismisses the complaint as Junie simply acting like a drama queen - an argument that may have merit considering his earlier infractions.

Once again we take a break from the action to further the exploits of the fabulous Food Five. We find Kyle and Phillipe prepping the sushi for its date with destiny and Kyle excuses himself into the bathroom for a round of cock-hockey.

Following the extraction, he returns with a certain sense of satisfaction and proceeds to coat the sushi with his liquid manhood.

Sure enough, Kaplan does not disappoint. Instead of being on guard after the fruit fiasco, Kaplan just plows forward and gobbles up some of the jizz tempura despite it having Nover’s name right on the front of the cover.

Team Red gets wind of the consumption and spends the next few minutes pointing and laughing. Kaplan promises to spread his feces on their bodies within the next three days.

The slow piano music kicks in and it’s time for a closer look at Phillipe Nover. Like Kaplan, he has an impressive resume but proves to be an interesting dichotomy in that he likes to heal people as an emergency room nurse and destroy people as an MMA fighter.

I guess it’s all in the timing.

Nover channels his Filipino heritage and introduces Team Red to Balut, also known as ‘The Egg of Darkness’. For those of you on this side of the cultural curve, Balut is basically a duck abortion in your mouth. Think of what Mike Tyson had planned for the children of Lenox Lewis and you get the idea.

At the weigh-ins, both fighters squeeze in at 156 lbs. Kaplan spends time before and after dazzling Team Blue with his knowledge of the world’s capitals. Nover saunters in wearing sunglasses and gets the stamp of approval from UFC President Dana White. Kaplan thinks the only thing Nover can do better than him is be Filipino.

The night before the fight, Junie Browning (presumably bitter that he’s no longer the chosen one) pays a visit to Team Red to share some inside information with Phillipe Nover on the style and habits of Dave Kaplan. A grateful Nover digests the information and an impromptu visit from Coach Nogueira gets the gang together to talk shop.

In the locker rooms before the fight, Kaplan lets Coach Hahn bash him in the face with sparring mitts while Coach Nogueira splashes water on Nover’s face in hopes that the power of Christ will compel him.

Team Mir's Dave Kaplan (2-1) vs. Team Nogueira's Phillipe Nover (4-0-1)

Round 1: Nover with a jab and Kaplan answers with an inside kick. Again. And again. Nice leg kick by Kaplan. Nover with an accurate left-right combo that forces Kaplan to hide his head. Nover fires off a series of accurate and powerful punches that crumble Kaplan. Nover pounces and Kaplan is holding on for dear life. Kaplan resists at first but Nover is too strong and is able to land punches from mount. Kaplan twists and rolls until Nover takes his back, flattens him out and sinks in the rear naked choke. Fight over.

Phillipe Nover defeats Dave Kaplan via submission (rear naked choke)

After the fight, a pumped-up Coach Nogueira tells Nover that he’s impressed Dana White for the second time. Dana compares Nover to a young Georges St. Pierre.

In the locker room of Team Blue, a stunned Coach Mir is speechless. Junie Browning on the other hand is happy that Kaplan got a reality check. Kaplan gives new meaning to the phrase ‘gracious in defeat’ by going on and on about how much better he is than Nover despite getting tooled in the cage. Incredulously, Coach Mir agrees.

The only thing I took from this episode (other than a sudden need for antacids) is that Phillipe Nover is one to watch. Like the NBA playoffs, I could have done without anything prior to the final five minutes of the broadcast.

Stay tuned next week as a wounded Kaplan goes on a bender, Mir and Nogueira face off in the Coach’s Challenge and Kyle Kingsbury fights Krzysztof Soszynski in the final light heavyweight elimination bout.

See you in seven!

WEC 36 MAIN CARD FIGHT RECAPS:

WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah " The California Kid" Faber vs. Mike Brown (145-pound title fight)

Fight recap: Mike Brown handed Urijah Faber his first career loss in the WEC, and in turn took his 145 pound title tonight with a brutal first round technical knockout. There was nothing out of the ordinary early on in the bout, but as the two settled in, Brown’s power advantage became apparent. As he usually does, Faber tried to use his athleticism to counter the power advantage, but this time, it back fired on him. As he was attempting a spinning back elbow strike, he walked right into a perfectly timed short right hook from Brown that crumpled him immediately. Brown jumped on him and pounded him out for the win. For Mike Brown, this was obviously the biggest win of his career, and he is a legitimate champion for the WEC. He’ll be a difficult match up for any challenger that comes calling. For Faber, how he rebounds from this loss will be huge for him as a fighter. He’s a guy that fights with a ton of confidence. He can’t afford to lose that edge on account of this loss. It will be interesting to see how he comes back from this.

Final result: Mike Brown defeats Urijah " The California Kid" Faber via technical knockout (strikes) in round one for the WEC Featherweight Championship

-end-

WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen (Three-round 185-pound nontitle fight)

Fight recap: Paulo Filho continues to prove his career is on a steady decline. He had no answer for Sonnen’s length or reach advantage in this fight. He looked disinterested and bored at times, and he never really showed any aggression. For the most part, neither fighter looked intent on trying to finish the fight at anytime, and the end result was an uneventful three round decision. Towards the end, the match resembled more of a sparring session than a fight that was originally set to be for a world title. In the end Sonnen did just enough to win the fight on the judges scorecards, but there was nothing impressive about this fight.

Final result: Chael Sonnen defeats WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho via unanimous decision

-end-

Jens “Little Evil” Pulver vs. Leonard Garcia (145-pound limit)

Fight recap: As expected both guys were looking to stand and trade in this fight, and with the power these two possess, it’s not surprising it didn’t last very long. Garcia was throwing some serious heat with his punches tonight. Every punch had knockout intentions. It was like he was content on just lowering his head and standing toe to toe with the former UFC lightweight champ, and the strategy worked out perfectly for him. Pulver never had a chance to get comfortable in the fight because of Garcia’s relentless attack. The Greg Jackson trainee has put together two impressive first round stoppages against world class talent now, and it looks like he’s a real threat to the featherweight title holder, whether that be Urijah Faber or Mike Brown after tonight.

Final result: Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia defeats Jens “Little Evil” Pulver via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

-end-

Jake Rosholt vs. Nissen Osterneck (185-pound limit)

Fight recap: Osterneck came out with a flurry of punches to start the fight, and he looked to have a clear advantage in the stand up. But it wasn’t long before the former national champion collegiate wrestler Jake Rosholt turned to his bread and butter and started working the takedowns and the ground and pound. He controlled most of the first round, but all the clinching and wrestling clearly took it’s toll on both fighters. In the second round the two tired fighters threw all caution to the wind and decided to turn the fight into a slug fest. Midway through the round Rosholt looked to be in deep trouble. Osterneck was putting everything he had into trying to finish the fight, but Rosholt proved his toughness once more and somehow found a way to turn the tides again. Once he got back to the top position on the ground, Osterneck had no cardio left, and Rosholt pounded him out for the win. It was a sloppy fight between two young, inexperienced fighters, but a win is a win for Rosholt. With the WEC abandoning the 185 pound weight class, his next fight could potentially be in the UFC. If that’s the case, he’s got some improving to do.

Final result: Jake Rosholt defeats Nissen Osterneck via technical knock out (strikes) in round two

-end-

UFC Heavyweight Brock Lesnar talks UFC 91, Randy Couture, ESPN and more

Posted: 05 Nov 2008 02:11 PM CST

UFC 91 is set go off LIVE from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on pay-per-view (PPV) on November 15 starting at 10 p.m. ET with the main event between Randy “The Natural” Couture and Brock Lesnar being billed as the "biggest fight in UFC history."

Some fans and even fellow fighters have been vocal about whether or not the former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star deserved such a quick title shot with a UFC record of 1-1 (2-1 overall).

Brock says the decision was more about money than about pecking order.

“I don’t look at myself any differently than any of these other guys in the heavyweight division other than I’ve got a lot more visibility than the other guys do. I’m a household name, not only in the US, but around the world. The [UFC] wouldn’t be doing this if they weren’t making any revenue, I guarantee you that.”

His opponent, five-time UFC champion and UFC Hall-of Famer Randy Couture, has also been known to snag a few headlines of his own. “The Natural” has made a career out of defying the odds and finding ways to reinvent himself.

Lesnar calls Randy “A threat” and “A little slicker inside with the dirty boxing,” but overall believes that sooner or later you can’t escape the laws of nature.

“I expect to walk in [to the Octagon] about 275, 280. That’s one of the things we took into consideration when we took this fight. We’re younger, we’re stronger, we’re faster and this guy’s on his way out and we’re going to make sure that happens.”

Still, Lesnar isn’t taking anything for granted. He knows that Couture’s experience is a factor, but dismisses his second run at heavyweight as more or less a free ride, against comeptition that favored his strengths.

“We’ve watched every single one of Randy’s fights a number of different times…there really are no comparables to me and the rest of the guys he’s fought because none of them have the wrestling credentials that I have. He has trouble with bigger guys, guys [like Barnett and Rodriguez] who knew how to control him. Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga didn’t know how to control him.”

Brock may not have the experience of going deep into a fight, a place that many experts give Couture the advantage, but that hasn’t stopped Lesnar from putting Couture at a disadvantage due to the marked difference in size.

“I’m not scared to go twenty-five minutes. As the rounds go longer I have a much bigger advantage because for Randy to have to push around 275 lbs for five rounds and me to push around a guy who if he’s lucky is 230 lbs - I know how to wrestle. These other heavyweights that he pushed around the Octagon were guys that had no clue how to wrestle and how to keep position.”

Despite all the negative talk about Couture and his date with destiny on November 15, Lesnar insists that it’s just business and nothing personal.

“I’ve always heard good things about Randy and we have some mutual friends. I don’t have any riff with him at all - other than he’s got my belt.”

Lesnar doesn’t appear to have ill will towards anyone in the UFC - save for the man behind the moustache, UFC referee Steve Mazzagatti.

Mazzagatti officiated Lesnar's Octagon debut against Frank Mir at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" earlier this year. In the opening seconds of the heavyweight bout, Lesnar stormed the former champion and began to maul him with a flurry of strikes.

It appeared that Lesnar was on his way to an impressive technical knockout victory; however, the pasty-faced goliath landed several questionable — and according to Mazzagatti — illegal blows to the back of the head.

As a result, the action was stopped and Lesnar was docked one point. And when the action restarted Mir survived another blitzkrieg and locked in a fight-ending submission (kneebar) just 91 seconds into the match.

The legal team that represents Brock Lesnar recently filed paperwork with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), requesting that Mazzagatti be removed from consideration as the man who will be in charge of the action during the main event.

“From that night forward we said that we weren’t going to use Mazzagatti again. Between myself and my management we just decided that we disliked the guy and that we don’t want to use him as a referee. He failed to do his job that night and we’re not going to let that happen again. He won’t ref any of my fights in the future.”

The NSAC obliged and has since assigned Mario Yamasaki to call the shots at UFC 91.

The road to UFC 91 has been wrought with multiple interviews and media coverage, including an infamous spot on ESPN E:60 that saw Lesnar dismiss his interviewer after being broached about the possible use of steroids in his career.

Lesnar blames the reptitiveness of the question, not ESPN for the dissolution of the interview.

“I thought it was a good piece, I thought ESPN did a really good job of putting it together, it was just time for me to exit the building. They had been here a number of days. I have better questions to answer other than for the 300-millionth time have I ever used steroids. I was just tired of the interview and tired of them asking me questions.”

Just as annoying for Brock is the oft-mentioned topic of a future superfight between Randy Couture and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko - a fight that to this day makes no sense for Lesnar.

“I just find it funny how stupid people can be. It’s hilarious how people can ask questions and they just don’t get it. It just goes to show you that there’s a lot of stupid people out there. Hey listen, the Randy Couture and Fedor fight probably will never happen because why the hell would Fedor ever even want to fight Randy Couture after I beat Randy Couture?”

One fight that will happen is the winner of Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar versus the winner of Frank Mir vs. Antonio Nogueira, who are set to clash at UFC 92 on December 27. Lesnar, who expects to “dominate” at UFC 91, is happy to board the Mir War Wagon.

“I hope Mir wins, because I want a rematch against Frank.”

Paulo Filho: Chael Sonnen ‘will pay dearly’ at WEC 36

Posted: 05 Nov 2008 01:36 PM CST

Props: Tatame.com

Quoteworthy:

"I'm not feeling bad, I've already recovered my weight and I'm ready. That guy (Sonnen) will pay dearly my 25% (purse) inside that octagon on those three rounds: 10% on the first, 10% on the second and the rest at the third.”

WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho sounds fired up after having to forfeit 25 percent of his purse to Chael Sonnen after tonight’s fight at WEC 36: “Faber vs. Brown” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., which will air on the Versus network at 8 p.m. ET. And the Brazilian intends to take it out on the Team Quest fighter in the form of bodily harm. Filho shocked the mixed martial arts community yesterday, coming in to his then 185-pound world title bout an alarming seven pounds over the division limit. As a result, he has been docked a portion of his salary and the fight will now be contested as a three-round nontitle fight.

Matt Lindland submitted by Suzanne VanOrman in fight for Oregon House Seat

Posted: 05 Nov 2008 11:00 AM CST

Mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran and Olympic silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling (2000), Matt Lindland, came up short in his bid to defeat Suzanne VanOrman in the political race to capture the Oregon House of Representatives in District 52.

Lindland earned 42 percent of the vote compared to VanOrman’s 58 percent — effectively surrendering the seat previously held by retiring Rep. Patti Smith, R-Corbett.

“The Law” is no stranger to state politics. He played an integral role in the effort to legalize mixed martial arts in Oregon after becoming the state's first licensed promoter. His addition to the Republican House would have provided a major boost to a sport that is continually trying to break into new markets.

Perhaps now Lindland can get back to his full-time duties as a mixed martial artist. He’s set to face Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a 195-pound catchweight bout during Affliction MMA's encore offering at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24,

Lindland recently scored a unanimous decision win over Fabio Negao during the July Affliction show. It was self-admittedly a rather disappointing fight, which eventually turned into a wrestling match.

Despite the win, he blamed his political responsibilities and other factors for the poor performance and assured fans that he would be back to his normal form his next time out.

He doesn't have much choice going against a dangerous opponent such as Babalu.
