Joe Rogan: Brock Lesnar is a superhuman sponge

“Brock Lesnar is gonna be tough for anyone to beat. He's a freak. He's got lunch box size hands, He's a huge guy. Before he was a professional wrestler, he was a real wrestler, a 2000 All-American NCAA National Champion. Now that he's fighting, he's completely 100 percent dedicated, he's a dangerous motherf*&^$*…he's gigantic and he moves super fast. He's a sponge, all he does all day is train. You get a guy like that, once he learns a few things, he becomes incredibly dangerous. He's superhuman.”

-Joe Rogan, UFC color commentator and host of the new CBS comedy ‘Game Show in my Head’, sounds off on the potential of Brock Lesnar now that the Pasty-faced goliath and his herculean hamhocks are holding the UFC heavyweight title hostage. That of course could all change when he faces newly minted UFC Interim Heavyweight champ Frank Mir later this Spring.

Efrain Escudero vs Jeremy Stephens UFC Fight Night 18 bout in the works

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 08:50 PM CST

Jeremy Stephens (14-3) today revealed that he will likely collide with The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 lightweight winner, Efrain Escudero (11-0), at UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1.

No location or venue for the Spike TV special is known at this time.

Escudero bested season favorite, Phillipe Nover, via unanimous decision at TUF 8 Finale to capture the 155-pound crown at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 13. He was supposed to lose, but he didn't, relying on his strong wrestling background to frustrate the Filipino for three rounds.

Prior to the win, the collegiate wrestling standout choked out Ido Pariente, Shane Nelson and Junie Browning to punch his ticket to the finals. Browning called for a rematch after he stopped Dave Kaplan, but it appears that the Kentucky native will have to get in line behind “Little Heathen.”

Stephens earned "Knockout of the Night" at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” after sending Rafael dos Anjos back to Brazil with a thundering upper cut that he threw from what appeared to be the center of the cage.

It was among the most devastating finishes of 2008.

The Iowa product has five career fights inside the Octagon, winning three (Dos Anjos, Cole Miller and Diego Saraiva) contests and losing (Spencer Fisher and Din Thomas) the others.

He’d get a nice bump with a win over a name like Escudero, but he’ll need to do his best to stay upright for that to happen.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details on UFC Fight Night 18.

Sengoku ‘Rebellion 2009′ quick preview

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 11:28 AM CST

World Victory Road has finalized its fight card for their upcoming Sengoku 'Rebellion 2009' event taking place January 4 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The newly established Sengoku Middleweight Championship will be up for grabs when Jorge Santiago, winner of last year’s Sengoku Middleweight Tournament will get his shot at the gold against Kazuo Misaki. Both fighters had an impressive year and went undefeated, and will now duke it out for the honor of being declared Sengoku’s first middleweight champion.

Sergey Golyaev, coming off the biggest win of his career, is scheduled to face Eiji Mitsuoka. Golyaev shocked the world when he scrapped a split-decision win over former number-one lightweight fighter Takanori Gomi, a controversial victory but nonetheless still a huge win.

Despite Gomi’s loss to Golyaev, he’s still set to do battle against Satoru Kitaoka for the Sengoku Lightweight Championship. He might not be deemed the most deserving for a title shot but apparently it was a part of Gomi's contract to have a guaranteed championship bout.

The original plan was to have a lightweight tournament with the winner facing Gomi for the title. Unfortunately that didn't pan out so well. Gomi was kept busy over the year with fights that (on paper) should have been relatively easy for him to win, but a little known Russian fighter threw a wrench into the works.

Also on the card is the first and last Elite XC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Silva. “Junior” was recently handed a one-year suspension for testing positive for steroids in California. He could be jeopardizing his fight career in the United States by taking this bout against Yoshihiro Nakao, the man who infamously kissed Heath Herring in the staredown before their bout back in 2005.

Lets hope for Nakao’s sake he doesn't try anything similar to 'Big Foot' or it could be a very early night.

In a bout that should help boost the events profile to fans in Japan, Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida takes on Pancrase veteran and former Abu-Dhabi Submission Champion Sanae Kikuta.

Rising Heavyweight prospect Dave "Pee Wee" Herman will also get his chance to impress fans further when he steps up to take on Mu Bae Choi. Herman has been on an absolute tear, winning and ending all of his 13 professional fights with his deadly striking.

And who could forget the return of another highly regarded prospect in the form of Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. The former Oklahoma state collegiate wrestling standout will make his third mixed martial arts appearance under the Sengoku umbrella and be put to the test against the very formidable Yukiya Naito.

Here is the official fight card for Sengoku 'Rebellion 2009′:

Sengoku Lightweight Championship:
Takanori Gomi (29-4) vs. Satoru Kitaoka (23-8-9)

Sengoku Middleweight Championship:
Kazuo Misaki (21-8-2) vs. Jorge Santiago (20-7)

Main Card:
Antonio Silva (11-1) vs. Yoshihiro Nakao (7-1)
Hidehiko Yoshida (8-6-1) vs. Sanae Kikuta (27-6-3)
Muhammed Lawal (2-0) vs. Yukiya Naito (15-4-2)
Dave Herman (13-0) vs. Mu Bae Choi (7-3)
Eiji Mitsuoka (14-6-2) vs. Sergey Golyaev (12-6)
Maximo Blanco (1-1) vs. Seigo Inoue (5-5-1)
Hidetada Irie (3-3-2) vs. Minoru Kato (2-5)

UFC Quick Quote: Frank Mir has no problem with ‘Interim’ label

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 11:27 AM CST

“I feel pretty satisfied that I’m the champ. The fact that Randy came back - really he should have waited for me and Nogueira to fight and then fought the winner of us to unify the belts. The fact that he left, the heavyweight belt was Nogueira’s. We were just waiting for the official title to be called the heavyweight belt. But obviously (Randy) came back and made it all kind of a mess. But Nogueira and Tim (Sylvia) fought for it and that created the real belt in my opinion. The fact that I beat Nogueira, who was top ranked, a top guy, it’s not like I took the belt from some paper champion, this guy was the real deal. The icing on the cake is Brock Lesnar, who has the other belt, I already beat him. Those were two champions and I’ve got a win over both of them. I feel pretty confident that I’m the champ. Other people [talk] about the interim thing, but I’ve got no problem with it. I’ll fight Brock again and we’ll fix this.”

– UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir (12-3) tells host Larry Pepe on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio that holding victories over former Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92 and current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 81 is enough to recognize him as the the owner of the ‘real belt’. Mir and Lesnar are expected to unify the belts in a rematch sometime in late Spring of 2009. Will history repeat itself or will Lesnar score revenge in Act II?
