Knee injury forces Hermes Franca off Fight Night 17 card against Joe Lauzon

Posted: 27 Jan 2009 06:11 AM CST

Hermes Franca (19-7) has been scratched from his 155-pound match up against Joe Lauzon (17- 4)  at UFC Fight Night 17 at USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., on February 7 due to an ACL tear in his right knee.

Here’s a snip from the Brazilian:

To all my Fans, unfortunately I am not gonna be able to fight UFC 17 in Tampa Florida, I just tore my ACL on my right knee last Saturday….I think you guys deserve to hear that from me. I just want to take care of that, and Joe Lauzon you’re lucky mother fucker lololol (J/K). Thank you UFC, my fans, friends for the support, I was training hard and I was so excited, but there’s nothing I can do, (could be worse), so Hermes Franca will take a break for some recovery and come back stronger than ever like I always do!!!!

Franca has been on a roller coaster ride during the past 18 months. The former number one contender recently returned from a 12-month steroids suspension, losing to Frank Edgar in his July comeback fight at UFC Fight Night 14.

The Brazilian then rebounded with a win against his former Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher Marcus Aurelio at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" in October. And shortly thereafter he was arrested in Jupiter, Fla., on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

That case is still pending; however, Franca has insisted that he was exhausted, which caused him to drive erratically. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Lauzon, too, rebounded from a recent loss — a first for him inside the Octagon — to stop Kyle Bradley via technical knockout (strikes) at UFC Fight Night 15 in September. Prior to the win, he was one of the many recent victims of Kenny Florian courtesy of a second round technical knockout loss at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April.

"J-Lau" was the favorite to win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 season before meeting up with Manny Gamburyan in the semifinals. He has four wins in five attempts inside the Octagon.

No word yet as to a possible replacement, but with less than two weeks until fight night the UFC is certain to make it a top priority.

Jamie Varner: Frank Mir’s commentating was skewed

Posted: 26 Jan 2009 08:51 PM CST

Props: Pro MMA Radio

It was a little skewed. I don’t know if he doesn’t like me or he doesn’t like my style. He was always talking about Cerrone this, Cerrone that. Are you kidding me? You’re supposed to be a world champion fighter and you don’t know who’s winning the fight? That’s bullshit.

-WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner tries to understand the direction of UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir’s commentating during his fight with number one 155-pound contender Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 on Sunday night. "C-4″ and "Cowboy" put on a thrilling back-and-forth brawl for more than 20 minutes that saw Mir place heavy emphasis on the resilience and flexibility of Cerrone rather than the offense of Varner. The title bout was stopped prematurely after an illegal knee sent it to the judges scorecards for a final decision and provided a disappointing ending to an otherwise great fight.

MMA Quick Quote: Joe Lauzon goes ‘Nuts’ over fan reaction to brother Dan

Posted: 26 Jan 2009 04:07 PM CST

Let me tell you, Dan was not looking for any kind of break for anything other than recovering his balls from his throat. Dan is the most stubborn kid I have ever met in my life. He does not want any shortcuts in anything and wants to earn everything he gets. He clearly got kicked in the balls and he took the amount of time he was given. If I got kicked in the balls I wouldn’t want to tie me own shoes, nevermind go out and fight. It happens in fighting and in some cases you don’t need the full time. In other cases, you do…and this was one of those cases. I honestly cannot believe how much shit Dan is catching over this. He gets fouled and then when he takes his time to recover he is the one that’s wrong? He got hit in the nuts and he took his time to recover. That’s it. Its not out fault Bobby Green consistently had terrible accuracy and hit Dan in the balls 3 times. After the third one, they gave Dan the option of the easy win. They told Dan that Bobby would be DQ’ed if he didn’t want to continue. If Dan was looking for an easy way out, he would have said he didn’t want to continue and take the easy win. It would have been the smart move, he could have collected his money and gone home with a win. Instead, he went out and showed those HUGE BALLS and finished the fight like a man.

UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon responds via The Underground Forum to the heat his brother Dan has been taking after his Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" brawl with Bobby Green this past weekend. “The Upgrade” took three unintentional blows to his yam-bag and needed some time to recover - prompting the haters to accuse him of being a drama queen. Lauzon was able to bounce back and submit Green via guillotine choke - but still got lit up in some of the message boards for “Ballgate.”

WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner suffers broken hand and broken foot in round three of WEC 38 ‘Varner vs. Cerrone’

Posted: 26 Jan 2009 02:53 PM CST

Fresh off his war with Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 ‘Varner vs. Cerrone,’ WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will be tonight’s guest on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio.

Varner took a split-decision victory from “Cowboy” in an action-packed battle that saw “C-4″ break his left hand and right foot in round three of their scrap. Varner confirmed the injuries earlier today with Pro MMA Radio host Larry Pepe.

Despite the split-decision, it’s not a stretch to suggest that Varner was on his way to a clear-cut victory before an unintentional (but illegal) knee felled him midway through the fifth. Varner opted not to continue after having difficulty seeing, providing a disappointing ending to a fantastic fight.

Tonight’s show will have Jamie’s reaction to the judges scorecards, his opinion on the commentating of Frank Mir, the toughness of Donald Cerrone and of course his decision to not continue after the illegal knee.

If that’s not enough, none other than Nostradumbass himself, MMAmania.com Editor and Senior Writer Jesse Holland will swoop in from his perch on Mt. Pompous to give you more ‘expert’ analysis than you can shake a shtick at.

Joining my nasally diatribe will be John Anik from ESPN’s MMA Live as he attempts to wade through the digital filth I leave behind and provide his own interpretation of the impact from last weekend’s ‘Day of Reckoning’ and WEC 38 events and also preview this Saturday’s colossal clash at UFC 94 ‘St. Pierre vs. Penn 2′.

Hosted by Larry Pepe, Pro MMA Radio is professional, guest-driven program that features some of mixed martial arts biggest names.

If you're looking for a radio show that revolves around a couple of MMA fans ranting and raving about everything that's already been covered ad nauseam, then Pro MMA Radio probably isn't for you.

However, if you want to hear from actual fighters and industry insiders answering questions that are relevant to the current MMA scene, tune in every Monday night at 9pm ET for our exclusive live feed.

See you tonight at 9pm!

Trainer: Fedor won with his old tricks, not his training

Posted: 26 Jan 2009 02:52 PM CST

Props: SI.com

“He’s obviously got unbelievable potential, but he had some distractions getting ready for this fight. The movie. The commercials. If Fedor wants to keep winning, and winning well, he needs to train professionally. Right now he won with his old tricks. The fact that Fedor won, don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy about. But he won this fight because of the training before this fight. The experience he had before this fight. The trainers did everything we could to get him ready. But for title fights, we can’t train the way we trained for this one.”

-Longtime Emelianenko trainer Vladimir Voronov reflects on the slow start from his star pupil at Saturday’s ‘Day of Reckoning’ main event. “The Last Emperor” was getting worked over fairly well in the stand-up by the dangerous Andrei Arlovski until a flying knee became a flying knockout. Voronov blames the ever-growing number of commitments that Fedor has as major distractions to his pre-fight training - the same distractions that contributed to his first grappling loss in over eight years at the 2008 World Sambo Tournament back in November.

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) announced its next offering over the weekend on the heels of its first show of the New Year just last night.
