Lesson of the day: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu>Rabid Pit Bull

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 11:47 PM CST

MMA has really gone to the dogs lately.

Nine-year old Drew Heredia of Bakersfield California made a hero out of himself - and mixed martial arts - when he saved a 12-year old girl last week from certain death at the hands of a bloodthirsty pit bull according to a report by The Bakersfield Californian.

“Man’s best friend” was having a neighbor’s Dachshund for an afternoon snack, much to the chagrin of a pet-loving good Samaritan.

When the young girl tried to intercept, the malicious mongrel turned his fangs on the youngster’s shoulder, prompting the nearby Heredia to jump into grappling mode and submit the mangy mutt via rear naked choke.

The Drewster kept the animal subdued for nearly twenty minutes until Animal Control officials arrived.

Once again, the evolution of combat sports puts MMA ahead of boxing. Unless of course any purists of the sweet (and ever-increasingly salty) science think Lil’ Drew could have dropped the killer canine with a stiff jab.

Heredia recently started taking jiu-jitsu lessons with his mother, an avid MMA and UFC fan about two months ago at Bakersfield Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in California. Drew had learned the choke hold and practiced it at home on his mother.

If that doesn’t get her “Mom of the Year” award than I don’t know what does.

While the girl suffered bite wounds, both Heredia and the troublemaking Dachshund were not harmed. The pit bull remains at an animal shelter until the city of Bakersfield can figure out whether or not it deserves a dirt nap.

Whatever the outcome, it’s nice to see mixed martial arts getting some positive press for a change.

UFC Quick Quote: Big fights are for people who sell tickets, not losers

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 07:47 PM CST

“A lot of it is pay-per-view (PPV) buys. If you sell a lot of tickets, you get fights. And Lesnar is one of the biggest ticket sellers we have in our sport right now. You can’t argue that, it’s just a facet of the game and instead of complaining about it I need to make sure I can sell a lot of tickets too. I don’t like that mentality when guys are like ‘Oh well it should be this way and it should be that way’ and I’m like ‘Dude, you’re a loser’.”

– UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir (12-3) tells host Larry Pepe in Part II of their interview on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio that current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar earned his title shot against Randy Couture at UFC 91 - and against anyone else the UFC sees fit because of his ability to sell tickets and PPV’s. Mir and Lesnar are expected to unify the belts in a rematch sometime in late Spring of 2009. Will history repeat itself or will Lesnar score revenge in Act II?

Fedor Emelianenko responds to disparaging remarks made by Arlovski trainer Freddie Roach

Props: Five Ounces of Pain

“Sometimes it is a trainer’s job to point out weaknesses in his fighter’s opponents, and sometimes it is a trainer’s job to convince his fighter that his opponent has weaknesses…We are not boxing and we are not fighting Sambo. We fight MMA…maybe Andrei is trying to convince himself that I have been weakened in some way, but it is no matter…The only thing I am 100 percent sure about is that I will be 100 percent ready to fight MMA against Andrei, and that is the only thing I care about right now.”

– Current WAMMA heavyweight champion and Affliction headliner Fedor Emelianenko responds to recent disparaging remarks made by world renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach, who has been working with Andrei Arlovski over the past year or so to help him improve his striking. Roach called "The Last Emperor" “flat-footed” with “no technique.” He also claimed the former PRIDE heavyweight champion would be knocked out if he “fought like a man.” Emelianenko is currently training in his Russian home city of Stary Oskol for his upcoming showdown with Andrei Arlovski at "Day of Reckoning" on January 24.

At a glance: UFC fighters and their official entrance songs

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 06:08 PM CST

William Congreve wrote in The Mourning Bride that “Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast.” Unfortunately Billy C. didn’t live in an age of UFC fighters, who jam to their favorite tunes to get pumped up en route to a cage of combat.

From Kid Rock to The Clash, the UFC entrance songs are as diverse and eclectic as the fighters themselves. So often following a live event the MMA message boards will light up with questions about a particular song that accompanied a fighter’s entrance.

When in doubt, Shazam! it.

A fighter’s choice in music is more often than not a matter of personal taste - unless of course you’re Rich Franklin or Dan Henderson. Neither “Ace” nor “Hollywood” had any say in their entrance music. UFC President Dana White was responsible for that.

So who has the best musical entrance? Again, it’s purely subjective. But it’s interesting to see how well fans know their favorite fighters. Below is a list of fighters as well as current or past entrance songs courtesy of The Canadian Press.

1. Rich Franklin - For Those About to Rock (AC/DC)
2. Dan Henderson - Lunatic Fringe (Red Rider)
3. Antonio Nogueira - Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)
4. Brock Lesnar - Shout at the Devil (Motley Crue)
5. Jason MacDonald - Turn the Page (Metallica)
6. Matt Hughes - Country Boy Can Survive (Hank Williams Jr.)
7. Houston Alexander - Bawitdaba (Kid Rock)
8. Gabriel Gonzaga - Mother (Danzig)
9. Forrest Griffin - I’m Shipping Up to Boston (Dropkick Murphys)
10. Stephan Bonner - Eminence Front (The Who)
11. Marcus Davis - Jump Around (House of Pain)
12. Randy Couture - Back in the Saddle (Aerosmith)
13. Georges St. Pierre - Sans Pression (Numero Uno)
14. Amir Sadollah - To Forgive But Not Forget (Outside)
15. Michael Bisping - Song 2 (Blur)
16. Tyson Griffin - Eye of the Tiger (Survivor)
17. Martin Kampmann - Ladies and Gentlemen (Saliva)
18. Chuck Liddell - Intro (DMX)
19. Thomas Egan - Patience (Damien Dempsey)
20. Dan Hardy - England Belongs to Me (Cock Sparrer)

Some interesting choices.

Sound off in the comments section on who gets the vote for best (or baddest) musical entrance. Or if you’re feeling creative, give us a song you think a fighter should have. Example: Forrest Griffin - “Cry Me A River” by Justin Timberlake for his post-fight breakdown at UFC 66.

Have at it.

Fans invited to attend championship ring presentation for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 04:40 PM CST

The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) announced Wednesday that is has scheduled an official ring presentation ceremony involving current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko for Friday, January 23.

The public will be able to see Fedor receive his championship ring at Honda Center in Anaheim, California at 3 p.m. PT during weigh-ins for Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” event.

Emelianenko became the first-ever holder of the WAMMA heavyweight championship after submitting former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia during Affliction’s first-ever event last July.

In addition to the WAMMA championship belt, a WAMMA championship ring was also commissioned by WAMMA from Tiffany’s. The ring was custom designed in the same manner in which the famed jewelry company produces championship rings for the NFL’s Super Bowl champions.

“We couldn’t be more proud of having Fedor Emelianenko represent WAMMA as its first-ever heavyweight champion,” said WAMMA Chief Operating Officer Michael Lynch. “Fedor is not only a world class fighter, but he is a world class person. He has always carried himself as a professional and comes from an old school mentality in that he prefers to let his actions speak louder than words.”

Fedor’s opportunity to bask in the glow of the ring ceremony could be short-lived, as the next day (Jan. 24) he is set to defend his WAMMA heavyweight title at “Day of Reckoning” vs. Andrei Arvloski, a former UFC heavyweight champion.

“Arlovski could very well be the toughest test of Fedor’s career,” Lynch began, “With an undercard shown live on HDNet and a stacked main event on PPV, Fedor’s WAMMA Championship defense will be the highlight of a superb night of fights during Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24th.”

Also scheduled for Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” is a heavyweight clash between Josh Barnett and Gilbert Yvel. Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio has already gone on record to proclaim that the winner of Barnett vs. Yvel will face the Fedor/Arlovski winner.

But the day prior to the heavyweight fireworks, WAMMA cordially invites everyone to attend the championship ring presentation ceremony for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko inside Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Friday, January 23 at 3 p.m. PT.

Trainer: Gabriel Gonzaga will earn title shot with win over Shane Carwin UFC 96

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 02:11 PM CST

From Team Link Lead Trainer, Marco Alvan, via BrasilCombate.com.br:

"Gabriel is in Brazil training a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where we believe will be the key to win this match…. It's going to be a tough fight and [if he wins] Napao (Gonzaga) will have [earned the right] to face the winner of Mir vs. Lesnar. But we're not thinking about that because we have to respect Carwin and we're focused on this fight."

The trainer for former heavyweight division number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga feels that his fighter will get another shot at championship glory if he can topple undefeated heavyweight specimen Shane Carwin at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. “Napao” failed in his first attempt to become champion, losing to Randy Couture via bloodbath at UFC 74 back in 2007. He is currently on a two-fight win streak after enduring back-to-back losses. He submitted Justin McCully with a first round kimura at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July and then crushed an overmatched Josh Hendricks at UFC 91 with a first round knockout. It won’t be so easy against Mr. Carwin. Not even close.

‘All Access’ with Rich Franklin to air on Spike TV prior to UFC 93

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 09:28 AM CST

Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin will be the focus of the latest installment of "UFC All Access," which will debut on Thursday, January 15 at 1 a.m. ET on Spike TV.

"Ace," of course, is about to challenge Dan Henderson in the main event at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17.

It's a highly anticipated showdown that is important for several reasons. The winner will likely earn a spot as coach opposite Michael Bisping on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) mixed martial arts reality series, which is themed "U.S. vs. U.K."

In doing so, it will get either Franklin or Henderson one step closer to another shot at 185-pound kingpin, Anderson Silva.

Here's the official program description:

"Get up close and personal with Rich ‘Ace’ Franklin, and go behind the scenes as he trains for UFC® 93!"

Former UFC ring girl and recent Playboy magazine cover girl Rachelle Leah is the host of the half-hour program. It is currently not scheduled to re-air prior to the pay-per-view (PPV) event … so don't miss it.

Be sure to tune in to see what all the buzz is about. And remember to hit us up on fight night for all the latest LIVE UFC 93 results and coverage next weekend.
