UFC 96: Pete Sell vs Matt Brown fight possible in Ohio March 7

Posted: 13 Jan 2009 08:15 AM CST

Participants on different seasons of The Ultimate Fighter, Pete Sell (8-4) and Matt Brown (8-7), will go toe-to-toe inside the Octagon at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Sell — the protégé of former welterweight champion Matt Serra — made his 170-pound debut against Josh Burkman at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" in October 2008, defeating "The Peoples Warrior" via unanimous decision in an exciting back-and-forth match.

Before the must-win, "Drago" endured a string of bad luck inside the Octagon, losing three consecutive bouts. He had Scott Smith all but finished in their epic battle back at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 Finale; however, he was iced with a Hail Mary punch when he went in for the kill.

He then dropped a unanimous decision to top 185-pound contender Thales Leites at UFC 69: "Shootout" and was knocked out in his next appearance by Nate Quarry in the third round at UFC Fight Night 11 after dictating the pace of most of that fight.

Sell now boasts a nice size and power advantage over most of his opponents in the 170-pound division — he's a big guy who can pack a punch. He'll look to land his share of blows on Brown to see whether or not he is indeed "Immortal."

Brown stepped up on short notice, replacing an injured Matt Riddle at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" in November 2008, to score an impressive first round submission win over Ryan Thomas via armbar.

He competed on TUF 7 before being eliminated from the show by eventual tournament winner Amir Sadollah via triangle choke in the semifinals. He bounced back to defeat Matt Arroyo via technical knockout at the TUF 7 Finale in June.

The taste of victory inside the Octagon, however, did not last long — Brown dropped a close split decision to undefeated Korean import, Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" in Atlanta, Ga., in September 2008.

Brown will more than likely do his best to stay in the win column and not lose the momentum gained from the win over Thomas.

UFC 96 is set to take place in "The Buckeye State" the same weekend as the Arnold Sports Festival — the largest health and fitness expo in the nation. It is currently without a main event.

Tom Atencio responds to rumors of poor ticket sales for ‘Day of Reckoning’ at Honda Center

Posted: 12 Jan 2009 10:56 PM CST

Affliction Entertainment Group Vice President, Tom Atencio, today took to the media and Underground Forum to shoot down rumors that ticket sales for his promotion’s sophomore effort, “Day of Reckoning” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24, are struggling.

Here is what he had to say:

“Just wanted to come on here and respond to all the rumors going around that we have only sold 1200-1500 seats. First of all i have no idea where this information is coming from, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality we are opening up more seating to accommodate the demand for tickets. This event is stacked from top to bottom, and I personally cant wait to see every fight! For those of you that can’t make it out to the event be sure to watch the main card live on pay PPV as well as the complete under card for free on HDNET.”

"Day of Reckoning" was was originally slated to go down on October 11, 2008, before being postponed. It was widely reported that poor ticket sales were the reason for the switch; however, Affliction officials indicated that timing was the real reason because it wanted more time to coordinate a successful show following “Banned” on July 19, 2008.

That debut pay-per-view (PPV) offering tallied a solid paid attendance of 11,242 at “The Pond,” which was short of the estimated 17,000 it would have taken to sellout the venue.

“Day of Reckoning” will feature one of the most anticipated fights in the history of the sport between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC title holder Andrei Arlovski. Matt Lindland and Vitor Belfort will collide in a middleweight showdown and another former UFC heavyweight champion, Josh Barnett, will take on bad boy Gilbert Yvel in another co-featured attraction.

The event is being co-promoted by the Oscar De La Hoya-led Golden Boy Promotions, which is hosting a welterweight superfight between four-time world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Mexican sensation Antonio Margarito just up the road at The Staples Center on the same night.

It’s a bizarre development that is more than likely not help when it comes to selling stubs.

Regardless, “Day of Reckoning” is a very important show for the future of Affliction, meaning that it needs as many fans as possible to attend, as well as purchase its pay-per-view (PPV) offering. With less than three weeks until fight night it will be crystal clear real soon just how well the show performs.

Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the latest “Day of Reckoning” fight card right here.

New WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown set to defend his title against Leonard Garcia at WEC 39 in Corpus Christi, Texas

Posted: 12 Jan 2009 03:40 PM CST

New WEC featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown (20-4), fresh off his stunning upset over company poster boy Urijah Faber at WEC 36 in November, will defend his title for the first time on March 1 against Leonard Garcia (12-3) in the co-main event of WEC 39 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Brown’s first round technical knockout of “The California Kid” was his eighth win in a row. That streak includes notable unanimous decision wins over Yves Edwards at Bodog’s ‘Clash of the Nations” and Jeff Curran in his WEC debut last June. The American Top Team standout has really caught fire as of late and rocked the MMA world by taking a title from a featherweight that many experts believed to be unstoppable.

Brown is a monster 145 pounder with strong wrestling and submission skills to go along with his apparent one-punch knockout power. While all four of his losses have been by submission, the ground game may not come into play considering how often Garcia (despite his solid jiu-jitsu game) chooses to stand and bang.

“Bad Boy” made a name for himself at UFC 69 when he went back and forth for three rounds with Roger Huerta in a brawl that was awarded “Fight of the Year” by the promotion. Garcia lost the decision that night, but certainly left his mark as a scrappy and talented fighter.

Feeling a little too small to compete with the endlessly talented roster of fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division, he made the move to the Zuffa-owned WEC in order fight at his more natural weight of 145 pounds.

That decision to this point has worked out great for the Lubbock, Texas native. In his two fights under the WEC banner, he’s put down top ten fighters Hiroyuki Takaya at WEC 32 and Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver at WEC 36 - both by first round knockout.

Garcia has undoubtedly earned his spot as number one contender role and his shot at the division crown.

The main event of WEC 39 will be a rematch between welterweight champion Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit (23-4) and Minnesota Martial Arts Academy product Brock Larson (24-2). The two first met in the cage at WEC 29 in August of 2007 with Condit retaining his title by first round submission. Larson has been lobbying for a rematch ever since and will finally get his chance at redemption on March 1.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on the developing fight card.

UFC Quick Quote: Denis Kang’s best day may still not be enough against Alan Belcher

Posted: 12 Jan 2009 01:24 PM CST

“If I could fight the guys in the UFC in a Muay Thai fight, I think I would destroy them, it wouldn’t even be close. I wouldn’t have to hold back. But you’ve got to worry about the takedowns and stuff like that…I’m getting to the point where it’s hard for anybody to take me down. I mean [Kang’s] going to have to work really hard. If he’s on his best day, his best performance, it’s still going to be hard for him to take me down at all and then if he does then I’ve got a couple of tricks up my sleeve for him. You never know, I’m might slap a triangle or something on him.”

-A confident Alan Belcher (13-5) talks to the Canadian Press about the grim chances former PRIDE and Spirit MC standout Denis Kang (31-10-1) has in their upcoming UFC middleweight bout at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17. "The Talent" is fresh off a tough split-decision win over Ed Herman at UFC Fight Night 15 back in September. It was his third win in his last four attempts and a victory over Kang would do a lot to move him up the short list of middleweight contenders - and solidify some of his fairly bold claims.
