Adios! Roger Huerta passes on UFC contract to chase Hollywood dream

Sherdog.com has the scoop:

"I saw that you have to dedicate as much as you do to training for a fight as you do for an acting role and I'm intrigued by that. I'm 25 years old. I see Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture and they didn't really hit their primes till their thirties. I'm only going to be young so long and I know that movies and agencies and what not want the young look…. The UFC is my home and it is my family and eventually I'll come back. Pursuing the modeling and acting thing, that's kind of where I'm at right now. The fighting will always be there. I'll always have that in me. The truth is I've been fighting my whole life for everything, and this to me, is something else."

Former top lightweight title contender Roger Huerta talks about his fighting future in this recent interview. “El Matador” apparently did not re-sign a contract extension as MMAWeekly.com incorrectly reported back in December. Huerta most recently lost a unanimous decision to Kenny Florian at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” back in August 2007. He will honor the last fight on his contract and then before bolting to the silver stage.

Junie Browning in talks to face Cole Miller at UFC Fight Night 18

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 03:04 AM CST

Former Ultimate Fighter 8 headliner Junie Browning (3-0) will reportedly make his second appearance inside the Octagon against American Top Team lightweight Cole Miller (14-3) at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, Tenn., on April 1.

Browning, the most controversial contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) since Chris Leben, was a foul-mouthed drunk who everyone wanted to see get his ass kicked (including Dana White).

Junebug however, may have had the last laugh, demonstrating some nice stand-up and improved cardio in his submission win over fellow castmate Dave Kaplan at last month's Ultimate Fighter Finale 8.

Browning also seems to now be on the straight and narrow after his tumultuous alcohol-induced stint on the mixed martial arts reality series. Perhaps he can once and for all realize the potential that was being wasted on booze and backstabbing.

He'll have to have his submission defense in check however when he faces "Mangrino." Like Browning, Miller was a talented up-and-comer who fell just short of the TUF finals, eventually succumbing to Joe Lauzon after being rattled with an illegal punch to the back of his head in the TUF 5 semifinals.

Since his UFC debut in June of 2007, Miller has gone 3-1, including an impressive submission victory over exiled lightweight Jorge Gurgel at UFC 86.

UFC Fight Night 18 will serve as the lead-in to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 on Spike TV. The event has yet to be announced or made official; however, two additional bouts are also rumored for the show, including a match up between TUF 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escuedero taking on Jeremy Stephens and Ricardo Almeida challenging Matt Horwich.

Food Emporium: Good diet first, great supplements second

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 02:51 AM CST

Man can’t live on shakes alone.

We live in an age where science and nutrition go hand-in-hand, and food is often engineered rather than grown. Like most technological advances, many of us have lost sight as to what role nutritional supplements should have in our diets.

Granted, today’s sports nutrition is highly advanced and very advantageous to high performance athletes. But a supplement should be just that: Something that SUPPLEMENTS your existing diet.

For the purposes of bulking up, getting your required daily intake of protien can be a bit impractical. After all, how much chicken can one man eat?

Which is why of course we have protein shakes. They exist to supplement our diets and keep our protein levels in check. Still, a protein shake is a poor substitute for a meal, no matter what the fancy labels may tell you.

Whatever your fitness goals are, food is not the enemy.

It is possible to eat for size without getting fat. One of the things I encourage you to try is to reintroduce foods into your diet by eating them naked. Aside from cutting out the unnecessary sugar and empty calories, you can begin to develop a taste for true food.

We’re so wrapped up in flavoring everything we eat. Salt and pepper, dressings, marinades, condiments, butter - it’s completely out of control.

Dumping that garbage will allow you to eat more - and grow more.

And the more you eat, the better you look - and the less reliance your body will have on nutritional supplements. If you’re body is getting the food it needs, it can concentrate on using the supplements to help you grow out of the gym. If you’re not eating enough, the supplements are wasted by the body in an effort to the backfill the missing nutrition.

And if the nutrition was wasted, so was your entire workout.

The most critical aspect of adding lean muscle mass (besides the gym) is your diet. Depending on your body size and type, shoot for at least 18 calories per pound of lean body weight and 1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight.

Make sure to build your workout around complex carbs but always say no to sugar. It may be difficult to eat for size while simultaneously eating "clean", so don't be afraid of fats either - so long as they're unsaturated.

And you should be drinking water like you're camping on Mercury. Four to six liters per day at the very least. What's the simplest way to determine if you're getting enough H2O? If your urine is yellow and not clear, you're not drinking enough water.

Now that you have a sound diet and exercise plan, let’s take a look at some of the supplements that can help you reach the next level.

Don't worry about trying to figure out which nutritional supplements are going to help you increase your overall mass. Once again the Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research for you and assembled the most comprehensive stack available to help you achieve your goals.

Dana White: UFC 92 ‘crushes’ pay-per-view (PPV) records

Quoteworthy:

“I think [Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn on January 31 is] going to be the biggest fight we’ve ever done. The last Lesnar pay-per-view did really well, and then our Dec. 27 show crushed it. I don’t want to get into numbers too much—that’s our policy. But it crushed it. I’ll say this: The Christmas show crushed the Lesnar fight by 150,000-175,000 buys… We lowballed our preflight estimates on that card and were blown away. I think what happened was two things. One, it was a kick-ass card. Two, I think we were a little off because of the holidays. I guess everybody thought, you’re burnt out by everything, what do you want to do? You want to get back together with your buddies and watch some fights. We were crapping our pants when the calendar came up when we saw the last Saturday of the year fell two days after Christmas. Then the economy went down. We didn’t know exactly what to expect. But we were surprised by how well it did.”

UFC President Dana White reveals that UFC 92: “The Ultimate 2008,” which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 27, was a massive success on pay-per-view (PPV). In fact, he says it outperformed UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar,” meaning that it was the most successful show of 2008. It would also mean that UFC 92 was the biggest success ever for the promotion — UFC 91 was second all-time behind UFC 66, which genreated an estimated PPV 1,050,000 buys. It’s hard to nail down an exact figure because the information is never made public; however, trends are often released weeks after the fights as the numbers are tallied from around the globe. Therefore, stay tuned for additional information. For complete coverage and results from the entire UFC 92 event click here.

UFC 96: Shane Nelson vs Aaron Riley

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 10:25 PM CST

Grizzled and well traveled mixed martial arts veteran Aaron Riley (27-10-1) will tangle with The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 participant Shane Nelson (11-3) at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7.

Riley returned to the Octagon against Jorge Gurgel at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" in November 2008, scoring a thrilling (and tight) three round unanimous decision.

It earned “Fight of the Night” honors, which is quite a statement considering the "biggest fight in UFC history" between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar was the featured fight of the night.

Riley has competed in Pride FC, Bodog and the International Fight League (IFL), among others, taking on some of the best in the business. He sports notable losses to Robbie Lawler, Spencer Fisher, Chris Lytle and Eddie Alvarez. And even though he did not come out victorious in those contests, the experience factor alone makes him a dangerous opponent.

His losses to Lawler and Fisher were under the UFC banner, dating back several years. Riley is currently riding a three-fight win streak.

Nelson — who trains under UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn — notched his first win inside the Octagon again cast mate George Roop at TUF 8 Finale via split decision last month.

Prior to his stint on the Spike TV-produced reality series, Nelson competed primarily close to home under promotions such as X-1 and Rumble on the Rock. He was knocked out of the eight-man tournament-style TUF show by eventual 155-pound season winner, Efrain Escudero.

Ricardo Almeida vs Matt Horwich to collide at UFC Fight Night 18

Ricardo Almeida vs Matt Horwich UFC 90

Ricardo Almeida (9-3) will return to action against former IFL middleweight champion Matt Horwich (23-11-1) at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, Tenn., on April 1.

The 185-pound tilt was supposed to go down at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” in October 2008; however, an injury forced “Big Dog” off the card. “Suave” remained on the card and gave last minute replacement Dan Miller all he could handle, but he eventually lost the bout via a hard-fought unanimous decision.

Almeida could have very well found himself in the main event of the UFC 90 card in a title match against Anderson Silva had things gone his way against Patrick Cote at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July of last year. However, the Brazilian dropped a razor thin split decision, snapping a seven-fight win streak.

The Hamilton, N.J., resident now appears fit to get back in the thick of things and re-establish himself as a top contender in the division to start his 2009 fight campaign.

Horwich –- the first-ever IFL middleweight champion -– is a mixed martial arts veteran who was on a roll before losing his title to Ryan McGivern via unanimous decision earlier last year. "Suave" rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Joey Guel three months later to get back to his winning ways.

This will be his sophomore effort inside the Octagon … and yet another daunting task.

UFC Fight Night 18 will serve as the lead-in to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 on Spike TV. The event has yet to be announced or made official; however, two lightweight bouts are also rumored for the show, including a match up between TUF 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escuedero taking on Jeremy Stephens and Junie Browning challenging Cole Miller.

Denis Kang is not Brock Lesnar; First hurdle Alan Belcher at UFC 93

Props: Between Rounds Radio Show via MMAFighting.com

Quoteworthy:

"I'm happy about it. [Belcher is] a good opponent for me. The UFC has been on my radar for a long time. Everyone knows for the last few years I've been fighting in Japan in PRIDE, HERO's and DREAM, but I think it was time for me to head over the UFC…. Like any other fight [Anderson Silva is] human. He's got his holes, he's got weaknesses. I think until anyone exploits them he's going to remain in that aura of invincibility, but I really don't think he is invincible…. I still need to prove myself in the UFC. I can't just come in there and do a Brock Lesnar and get two fights and get a title shot right away."

High-profile 185-pound standout Denis Kang talks about his long overdue Octagon debut against Alan Belcher at UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on Jan. 17. Kang — who has enjoyed success primarily in Japan and Korea fighting in the PRIDE and Spirit MC organizations — knows that there is a long road ahead of him to be considered a number one contender in the eyes of his latest employer. He is currently on a two-fight win streak after losing back-to-back matches. He most recently defeated Marvin Eastman via first round technical knockout at Raw Combat: "Redemption.” The Canadian with South Korean roots has been a top competitor in his category for years. Can he continue that success in the UFC — where so many other talented fighters have struggled early — to one day challenge division kingpin Anderson Silva?
