Sengoku ‘Rebellion 2009’ results and quick recap

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 08:18 AM CST

World Victory Road saw their seventh effort, Sengoku 'Rebellion 2009', finish up a little earlier today from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The event boasted some great stand-up, a few slick submissions and a couple of surprises along the way.

The biggest surprise of the night came courtesy of Satoru Kitaoka. He captured the Sengoku Lightweight Championship by quickly disposing of former PRIDE FC poster boy Takanori Gomi.

Both were hesitant to make the first move, but Gomi managed a takedown on Kitaoka only to be put in a fight ending heel hook for his efforts.

This marks Gomi's second loss in a row. A major setback for a fighter as revered as he is. “The Fireball Kid” hasn’t looked like the same dominant fighter he once was in several years. Nonetheless it was a huge and very deserved win for Kitaoka.

Jorge Santiago was crowned the first Sengoku Middleweight champion after an all out war with Kazuo Misaki. It was a very close fight and a decision seemed imminent heading into the fifth round and could of gone either way.

Santiago however wasn't going to allow his fate be in the hands of the judges and pulled off a rear naked choke, putting the “Grabaka Hitman” to sleep.

Judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii made a surprise appearance at the event, handing flowers to Sane Kikuta and Hidehiko Yoshida before their fight got underway. His agenda seemed to be to enjoy the fights from ringside, and perhaps advertise the boys at Zuffa courtesy of his UFC shirt.

The fight between former Abu Dhabi champion Sane Kikuta and Judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida was the only bout to go to the judges. When all was said and done it was Kikuta who picked up a split-decision victory, and a rather dull one at that.

Also in action was Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal who had an impressive outing and an even more impressive ring entrance. He overwhelmed his opponent Yukiya Naito in the stand-up for an early TKO finish in round one.

He then worked over the fans in attendance when he got them involved with back and forth chants of his nickname "King Mo" which seemed to go down well. He also got a reluctant referee in on the fun which prompted a few chuckles from the crowd.

Lawal seems right at home in Japan with his theatrics and thankfully can back them up with some serious butt-kicking come fight time.

The scheduled bout between Antonio Silva and Yoshihiro Nakao was barley underway before Nakao came up lame with a knee injury. The way it went down looked a tad suspicious. Nakao was motionless before it occurred, not really falling on it or twisting it or anything of that nature. It happened while he was standing still.

Osteoporosis notwithstanding, it was a dissapointing ending to their fight and an easy win for Silva.

Eiji Mitsuoka was able to do what Gomi couldn't by putting away Sergey Golyaev. He locked a tight armbar on the Russian, who had no other choice but to tap. Mitsuoka is now expected to get a title shot at newly crowned Sengoku Lightweight Champion Satoru Kitaoka somewhere down the line.

Dave Herman fought well in the first round but didn't fair so well after that and was upset by Mu Bae Choi.

Conditioning came into play for both fighters heading into the second frame but it looked like it got the better of Herman first. Choi blasted him with a few shots and “Pee Wee” seemed to lose his bearings and turn his back, slowly walking away.

Choi wasn't about to let him go and kept the pressure on, landing a barrage of strikes that left Herman dazed, on his knees and dangling in the ropes until the referee made the save.

Here are the official results for Sengoku 'Rebellion 2009':

Bobby Lashley next fight for Palace Fighting Championship (PFC) Feb. 6

Posted: 03 Jan 2009 04:03 PM CST

The California-based mixed martial arts promotion, Palace Fighting Championships (PFC), today confirmed a huge (literally) acquisition to its roster — former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (6′3″, 265 pounds) has inked a two-fight deal and will compete on an upcoming event at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore on February 6.

An opponent has not yet been announced at this time for the American Top Team (ATT) recruit; however, company officials have stated that it has some credible options on the table.

Lashley recently made his professional mixed martial arts debut with a first round technical knockout win over Joshua Franklin at Mixed Fighting Alliance: “There Will Be Blood” at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla., on December 13. He overwhelmed his opponent right from the get-go, opening up a gnarly fight-ending gash on his head only 41 seconds into the bout.

While it wasn’t a true showcase of Lashley’s developing mixed martial arts skills, it was an impressive performance nonetheless. Now training with one of the most highly regarded camps in the world, ATT, the potential is almost limitless for a guy with the background, size and athletic ability of Lashley.

Here’s the big man’s thoughts on his new team from an interview with FiveOuncesofPain.com last month:

“When I got down to the American Top Team, that's when everything really started coming together. These guys are serious down here. You go in the gym any day of the week and you're not just pitter pattering with a few decent fighters, you're training with the best. There's just so many people at ATT and they're taking the game of mixed martial arts to a whole new level.”

Also worth a mention is that 170-pound judo specialist, Hector Lombard (17-2-1), has signed with the promotion and will be in action on the February 6 card, too. “Shango” was supposed to fight Karo Parisyan at UFC 78, but had visa issues and never made his way back onto another UFC card.

He also signed with Elite XC last year, but never got a chance to compete for promotion before it went out of business in October. In short, his debut on American soil is long overdue. Fernando Gonzalez (13-6), loser of three out of his last four fights, is being mentioned as a possible opponent.

MMA Quick Quote: Fedor Emelianenko has ‘no technique’ when it comes to striking

Posted: 03 Jan 2009 01:32 PM CST

Fedor punished

“He’s flat-footed, has no technique, but he can punch. That always helps. He’s accurate. He’ll follow you right to the floor, so he’s aggressive. But that aggressiveness can be used to our advantage, I think.”

– Freddie Roach — the world famous professional boxing training savant — tells SI.com that WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko lacks technique when it comes to his stand up game. He says what the Russian cyborg lacks in that department he makes up for with his accuracy and aggressiveness (see Sylvia, Tim for the most recent example.) Roach is currently working with Andrei Arlovski to refine his striking and prepare him for a possible cross-over to the sweet science. Emelianenko and Arlovski will collide in the main event at Affliction: “Day of Reckoning,” setting up one of the best heavyweight match ups in a very, very long time. For what it’s worth, Emelianenko is more known for his crafty and tight submissions … not his striking (at least recently). He is also known to be a bleeder. Can Arlovski find holes in his game and open up a hole in Emelianenko’s face? Will the former Pride FC deity once again answer the call and quiet the critics? What say you?

Sengoku Middleweight Championship:

Kendall Grove next fight against Jason Day at UFC 96

Posted: 03 Jan 2009 09:14 AM CST

kendall grove
Season three middleweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Kendall Grove (9-5), will return to action after a nine-month layoff to challenge Jason Day (17-7) at UFC 96, which is scheduled for the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7, according to a recent 411Mania.com report.

“Da Spyda” has been out on the sidelines since winning his “Loser Leaves Town Match” against former 185-pound champion Evan Tanner at TUF 7 Finale via unanimous decision back in June 2008. It was a critical win — the Hawaiian was jeopardy of losing his third straight match.

Grove was stopped in back-to-back fights by Jorge Rivera and Patrick Cote, respectively, before getting back in the win column. He was on a three-fight win streak inside the Octagon before the two losses. The 6′6″ fighter will now look to put consecutive victories together once again to start the New Year.

Day was victorious in his debut for the promotion against Alan Belcher at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ in April, upending Alan Belcher via first round technical knockout. The Canadian product was then stopped himself in the same fashion less than two months later when he locked horns with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: "Bedlam."

He was supposed to return against Jason Lambert at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6, but was forced off the card with an injury. Therefore, this will be the third fight for the construction worker in the UFC … and a very difficult one at that.

Grove poses serious challenges to anyone in the division because of his size and length. But others have proved that if they can get inside he can be finished.
