Luis Cane vs Steve Cantwell UFC 97 fight likely

Posted: 22 Jan 2009 12:41 AM CST

Surging light heavyweight contender Luis Cane (9-1) will likely get to sink his chops into the last man to hold the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) 205-pound title, Steve Cantwell (7-1), at UFC 97 from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18.

“Banha" was supposed to collide with Keith Jardine; however, “The Dean of Mean” now has bigger and better things to take care of, namely Quinton “Rampage” Jackson,” after division champion Rashad Evans revealed he would not be ready in time for UFC 96 in March.

So it’s Cane vs. Cantwell at UFC 97 and Jardine vs. Jackson at UFC 96.

Cane destroyed Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via second round technical knockout at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" back in October. It was his second straight win — the Brazilian heel stopped Jason Lambert at UFC 85: "Bedlam" last June.

His only loss is to James Irvin, which was ruled a disqualification because of an errant knee to the face. The 27-year-old fighter is tough as nails and comes prepared to bang, which means that Cantwell ought to as well.

"Robot" finished Razak Al Hassan with a first round armbar in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" in December 2008; however, the Iowa resident refused to tap, causing his elbow to buckle under the pressure.

It was a grisly scene made worse by the classless comments from Cantwell in wake of the win (he apologized to Al Hassan for the remarks shortly after their fight).

Cantwell is riding a four-fight win streak after suffering the first loss of his career to Brian Stann back in early 2007. He’s stopped all four opponents on his current run, including a win against Stann in a rematch. In fact, Cantwell has never been the distance in eight professional mixed martial arts bouts, win or lose.

UFC 97 will likely feature middleweight champion Anderson Silva, defending his 185-pound strap against Thales Leites. Company President Dana White recently announced during the UFC 93 post-event press conference that Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua would also square off in the co-main event.

Gilbert Yvel (finally) cleared to fight at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’ against Josh Barnett

Posted: 22 Jan 2009 12:12 AM CST

Dutch Muay Thai specialist Gilbert Yvel (35-12-1) has finally been licensed by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) and will be able to compete at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., against former UFC heavyweight champion Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett (23-5) on January 24.

Affliction officials are no doubt breathing a huge sigh of relief at this point, especially in light of the news that former International Fight League (IFL) lightweight champion Chris Horodecki failed a pre-fight physical yesterday and has been blocked by the CSAC from competing against Dan Lauzon at Saturday’s event.

Yvel had a difficult time getting licensed to fight in the United States. In fact, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) rejected his application to compete against Sergei Kharitonov at PRIDE 33 in Las Vegas as recently as February 2007.

That's because “The Hurricane” has a history of "dirty" behavior inside the ring — everything from assaulting referees to eye gouging to biting opponents. No question Yvel will be under the microscope when he faces Barnnett.

The Pride FC veteran is currently enjoying a seven-fight win streak, dating back to mid 2006. He most recently stopped Alexander Timonov via technical knockout (punches) in just 22 seconds at M-1 Challenge 9 a few weeks ago.

Yvel has been up against some of the best in the business during his 11-year career, including Semmy Schilt (win), Dan Henderson (loss), Vitor Belfort (loss), Wanderlei Silva (N/C), Igor Vovchanchyn (loss) and Cheick Kongo (win), among others.

"Day of Reckoning" features the colossal clash between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC titleholder Andrei Arlovski. Of course, we will also pass along Horedecki's replacement as soon as possible. To check out the latest fight card click here.

CSAC denies Chris Horodecki license to fight Dan Lauzon at Affliction Jan. 24 because of injury

Posted: 21 Jan 2009 10:58 PM CST

Former International Fight League (IFL) lightweight champion Chris Horodecki today failed a pre-fight physical and has been blocked by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) from competing against Dan Lauzon at Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” on Jan. 24.

Sherdog.com reports that the baby-faced “Polish Hammer” is suffering from a bulging disc in his neck, which has sapped 80 percent of the strength in his right arm.

The 155-pound bout between Horodecki and Lauzon was expected to kick-off the pay-per-view special, which will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and begin to air at 9 p.m. ET. No replacement has been named at this time; however, the hunt for a suitable opponent is already underway.

This is familiar territory for the upstart promotion — Aleksander Emelianenko was scratched at the last minute prior to the debut show “Banned” back on July 19, 2008, when he was denied a license from the CSAC for undisclosed medical reasons. Perhaps the silver lining in this case is that Affliction has more than 24 hours to find someone willing to challenge Lauzon.

Horodecki most recently entered "S-Cup 2008″ — an eight-man Shootboxing tournament held in Japan — back in November. The 21-year old Canadian drew the 31-year-old Shishido in the first round — an experienced fighter, but one who he was more than likely favored to defeat. Shishido, however, managed to outwork and out score Horodecki on the judges scorecards en route to a unanimous decision win.

It was a curious decision at the time with the Lauzon fight on the horizon. And one has to wonder if taking that fight had any impact on his current health situation.

Horodecki made his IFL debut in June 2006, going 8-1 and looking sensational in the process. He has just one career loss in mixed martial arts (Shootboxing is not considered true MMA) –- a lopsided beatdown courtesy of Ryan Schultz at the IFL World Grand Prix Finals in December 2007.

It was his last appearance. Hopefully, Horodecki can recover quick and get back in the saddle sooner rather than later … he has been on the sidelines for too long.

“Day of Reckoning” features the colossal clash between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC titleholder Andrei Arlovski. Of course, we will also pass along Horedecki’s replacement as soon as possible. To check out the latest fight card click here.

BJ Penn kicks out Spike TV production crew for ‘Primetime Live’

Quoteworthy:

“I really didn't like how I was portrayed in the first episode. It was ridiculous, actually. I told them that if you keep doing this these cameras aren't going to come around anymore so you guys better straighten up your act…. It's just really funny how they try to portray everything like I was a spoiled slacker and a liar [growing up], but whatever … what can you do. All you can do is kick the cameras out. They got kicked out for awhile, but they are trying to make amends.”

UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn reveals that he and the Spike TV production crew are at loggerheads regarding his portrayal on the first episode of “UFC Primetime,” which is a $1.7 million three-part promotional series for his upcoming super fight against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 on January 31. UFC President Dana White made a call to "The Prodigy's" brother, JD Penn, during the premier, checking up on the Hawaiian after he got wind of an apparent vacation that BJ was taking at a critical time in his training. His trainer, Rudy Valentino, insisted it was much ado about nothing and White is simply creating drama where none exists. Apparently that set the stage for this latest development. Stay tuned to see if the two sides can makes amends before the third and final episode next week. In the meantime, enjoy episode two tonight at 10 p.m. ET on Spike TV.

Gegard Mousasi mulls move to light heavyweight to possibly face winner of Affliction’s Sobral vs Sokoudjou

"To me the next challenge is to move up a division. It’s not because I don’t see middleweight as a challenge but because my body’s getting bigger. I always came down, came down and because of my age my body’s getting bigger and bigger. It’s something that I needed to do. I think the timing is good to go up. I may fight the winner of Babalu vs. Sokoudjou but I don’t know for sure. It’s eventually up to Affliction and M-1 who they want me to fight. It’s a tough division because every guy is explosive, every guy is fast and has good strength. It’s a tough division and there’s a lot of good names. It’s not my goal to be the best light heavyweight in the world, something I’ve always wanted is to be a heavyweight. I plan, over one year maybe two years, to build to heavyweight."

-DREAM Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi considers the move to light heavyweight in anticipation of possibly facing the winner of Renato Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, which takes place January 24 at Affliction 'Day of Reckoning'. The “Young Vagabond” is an extremely talented fighter and in addition to riding an eleven-fight win streak, is also a former amateur boxing champion and has served as a striking coach for current WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko.

XMMA 7 ‘Inferno:’ Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos vs Marloes Coenen

Posted: 21 Jan 2009 01:08 PM CST

Last month MMAmania.com reported that former Elite XC female powerhouse Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) had signed a one fight deal to compete on the XMMA 7: "Inferno" card on February 27 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The promotion recently announced that Dutch submissions artist Marloes Coenen would be her opponent.

Cyborg - the wife of former Pride FC fighter Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos - burst onto the scene in May of 2008 with a dominating performance against Shayna Baszler in her debut under the Elite XC banner. Like her husband, she’s a product of the Brazilian Chute Boxe Academy, a style that’s evident as soon as she steps foot in the cage.

Her most recent fight was in October 2007 on the Elite XC “Heat” card. She out-pointed Yoko Takahashi on the judges scorecards for a unanimous decision. It was a hard fought battle, but another impressive win for Santos nonetheless.

It’s interesting to note that three of Marloes Coenen’s sixteen career wins have come against Takahashi.

Coenen has over eight years of professional fight experience to her credit and an impressive mixed martial arts record of 16-2. She’s currently on a three-fight win streak after losing only the second fight of her career in a close split-decision to Roxanne Modafferi back in 2007.

Like her Brazilian counterpart, the Deventer, Holland native likes to finish her opponents early and often. A staggering 11 of her 16 wins have come by way of submission.

On paper, the Dutch destroyer matches up well with Santos. It’s not going to be an easy fight for Cyborg, and a loss could potentially harm the marketability of a future fight with female MMA superstar Gina Carano. We’ll see what happens come fight night, but either way it should be a good one for the Canadian fans.

Also in action, Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni will face off against Guillaume “Il Toro” de Lorenzi in the night’s main event.

Fedor Emelianenko and Tito Ortiz ring NASDAQ opening bell (Pic)

It’s interesting to see Swedor and Tito ring the opening bell in a state they can’t even compete in. Perhaps “The Baddest Sweater on the Planet” will one day see action in the Empire State as MMA’s biggest stars continue to ground and pound their way into pop culture.
