Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira reportedly agrees to fight Randy Couture at UFC 101 in August

Posted: 01 Mar 2009 01:17 AM PST

Former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion and ex-PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has agreed to face five-time UFC Champion and Hall of Famer Randy Couture in an epic match-up at UFC 101 in August, according to MMAWeekly.com.

The report does not provide a date for the event; however, it indicates that UFC 101 is tentatively scheduled to take place in Portland, Oregon.

“The Natural” was first to agree to the proposed face-off late last week. Now it appears that “Minotauro” is following his lead and finally giving MMA fans what they want.

This, of course, is the dream match-up that most fans expected to see on May 23 before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Couture recently indicated that he was interested in a fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic when the promotion storms the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, for UFC 99 on June 13. However, he apparently did not have enough time to prepare because he will be on a movie set alongside action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action flick "The Expendables."

This is not the first time that Couture has been offered a fight with "Big Nog." He balked at the opportunity while he was in a contract dispute with the promotion for most of 2008, saying the fight that he wanted most was one against WAMMA deity Fedor Emelianenko.

Now that he is coming off surgery and another movie role, UFC 101 could finally be the event that brings the former kings together.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

Josh Koscheck vs Chris Wilson at UFC 98 in May

Posted: 28 Feb 2009 03:53 PM PST

No rest for the weary.

Josh Koscheck will indeed return to the Octagon sooner rather than later, accepting a bout to take on Chris Wilson in a welterweight tilt scheduled for UFC 98 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23.

This will mark the fourth fight in six months for the American Kickboxing Academy product.

Koscheck was recently upended when he walked into a Paulo Thiago uppercut at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” two weeks ago. The referee jumped in to stop the action in the first round after Koscheck hit the canvas, which several onlookers, including Koscheck, felt was a premature stoppage.

He will no doubt look to exact revenge on the super tricky fighter from Team Quest.

Wilson is also coming off a loss — he dropped a unanimous decision to John Howard at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ just last month. It was the lone bright spot on a rather uneventful card, bringing home co “Fight of the Night” honors.

Wilson had a recent four-fight win streak snapped in early 2008 when he stepped up on short notice to take on top division contender — and Koscheck training partner — Jon Fitch on super short notice in a losing effort (unanimous decision).

He was invited back shortly thereafter and defeated Steve Bruno in a lopsided unanimous decision at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy." This will mark his fourth fight under the UFC banner.

XMMA 7 ‘Inferno’ results and quick recap

Posted: 28 Feb 2009 09:40 AM PST

XMMA 7 ‘Inferno’ went down last night in the CEPSUM Amphitheater in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. An event that once featured fights with both Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos took place without either of the former EliteXC stars in action, but that didn’t stop the rest of the card from putting on a great show.

In the main event, War Machine (the artist formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver) filled in against the previously unbeaten Guillaume “Il Toro” de Lorenzi on very short notice for Baroni — who is likely to instead compete on a Strikeforce event on Showtime sometime in May.

Despite coming in as a late replacement, the controversial veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series was able to leave Montreal with the seventh win of his career. He repeatedly tried to take the fight to the mat and his persistence paid off late in the first round when he was able to secure de Lorenzi’s back on the ground and sink in a fight-ending rear naked choke.

The card also featured two championship bouts as well. Light heavyweight champion Martin Desilets and lightweight champion Kajan Johnson were both successful in defending their titles against Todd Gouwenberg and Steve Claveau, respectively.

Gouwenberg looked sharp at the beginning of his fight and appeared to be on his way to capturing the XMMA 205-pound strap before his confidence got the best of him and he ended up getting caught in a late first round triangle choke, which Desilets used as leverage to pound away at the challenger until he got the referee stoppage.

The win was the second in a row for “The Stress” and third straight under the XMMA banner.

In the 155-pound title fight, Johnson and the fan favorite Claveau battled for the second time in their careers. They had previously fought to a draw back at XMMA 4 last May. This time, however, the champion controlled most of the match by taking the action to the ground and using dominant positions.

Claveau survived the first round, but it wasn’t long into the second before “Ragin” Kajan Johnson had his opponent tapping out to a fight-ending armbar.

Here are the complete results for XMMA 7: “Inferno:”

-War Machine defeats Guillaume De Lorenzi via submission (rear naked choke) in round one
-Martin Desilets defeats Todd Gouwenber via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
-Kajan Johnson defeats Steve Claveau via submission (armbar) in round two
-Thierry Quenneville defeats Douglas Evans via submission (triangle choke) in round two
-Daniel Grandmaison defeats Markhaile Wedderburn via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
-Tim Wadsworth defeats Johan Croes via submission (armbar) in round one
-Eddie Fyvie defeats Stephane Lamarche via submission (armbar) in round three
-Dereck Gauthier defeats Dave Pariseau via submission (triangle choke) in round one
-William Romero defeats Mitch Gagnon via unanimous decision
-Daylin Logan defeats Dominic Poissant via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
-Valerie Letourneau defeats Kate Roy via submission (armbar) in round one
-John Makdessi defeats Amir Uddin via technical knockout (strikes) in round two
-Jeff Royer defeats Sebastian Deroy via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Mike Swick vs Ben Saunders UFC 99 fight booked for Germany

Posted: 28 Feb 2009 07:27 AM PST

Former contestants from different seasons of The Ultimate Fighter, Mike Swick and Ben Saunders, are penciled in to hook ‘em up in a welterweight bout at UFC 99 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13, according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

Swick is a former middleweight contender who recently made the move down to 170 pounds. He scored a “quick” technical knockout of Jonathan Goulet at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" back in December 2008. It was the first stoppage for the American Kickboxing Academy standout in more than two years and the first for him as a welterweight.

He is currently undefeated (3-0) in the new division with wins over Goulet, Marcus Davis and Josh Burkman.

Saunders was actually expected to be in action next weekend against Dustin Hazelett at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. However, both fighters had to withdraw from the event because of injuries.

“Berserk” is coming off a lopsided first round ass-kicking of Brandon Wolff at UFC Night 16: "Fight For the Troops" back in December 2008. The former TUF 6 competitor channeled the Muay Thai skills of UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva to totally rout the Hawaiian in his Octagon debut.

It was impressive (and painful) to watch to say the least. Saunders has been perfect (3-0) since his stint on the mixed martial arts reality series, defeating Ryan Thomas at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" in August and Dan Barrera via unanimous decision at TUF 6 Finale.

UFC 99: Todd Duffee vs Mustapha Al Turk

Posted: 28 Feb 2009 03:40 AM PST

Undefeated American Top Team (ATT) heavyweight Todd Duffee (4-0) will make his much anticipated debut inside the Octagon when he faces UFC sophomore Mustapha Al Turk (6-4) at UFC 99 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13 according to InTheGuard.TV.

Duffee is coming off an impressive second round TKO of Brazilian roadblock Assuerio Silva at Jungle Fight 11 last September. The 23-year old University of Georgia student has ended all four of his professional fights by way of (T)KO.

Al Turk — who fights out of the famous London Shoot gym in the United Kingdom — came up short in his debut against Cheick Kongo at UFC 92 after a successful run in Europe on the Cage Rage circuit. In fact, he has six wins in seven attempts for the promotion and was riding a two-fight win streak before getting dismantled at “The Ultimate 2008″.

He is a pretty well-rounded fighter with serviceable boxing and solid grappling skills -– good enough to earn him the British Cage Rage heavyweight title.

UFC 99 is expected to be headlined by former middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin taking on ex-PRIDE smashing machine Wanderlei Silva in his middleweight debut. Heath Herring and Cain Velasquez as well as Mike Swick and Ben Saunders are also expected to hook ‘em up.
