Ken Shamrock tests positive for steroids

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 05:26 PM PDT

Mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock tested positive for three illegal anabolic steroids — Norandrosterone, Noretiocholanolone and Stanozolol — after his first round armbar submission win over Ross Clifton at War Gods: “Valentine’s Eve Massacre,” which took place at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., on Feb. 13, according to the California State Athletic Commission.

Shamrock has been suspended and fined $2,500 for the transgression. He has the right to appeal the finding in the future.

If the positive test is upheld it will more than likely erase the first win in four years for "The World's Most Dangerous Man." In addition, it will throw a wrench into his upcoming fight against former WWE superstar turned MMA fighter, Bobby Lashley, in the Roy Jones Jr.-promoted hybrid MMA and boxing event from the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Fla., on March 21.

In fact, it could be another big money match down the tubes for the Lion’s Den founder.

That’s because Shamrock was supposed to collide with Internet street fighting sensation Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: “Heat” in October 2008. However, Shamrock pulled out of that scheduled match with Slice on fight night because of a cut sustained in warm-ups and has since been accused by younger brother Frank of cutting himself to get out of the fight.

Lashley is an absolute monster, boasting a a rare blend of size, freakish athleticism and blazing quickness. He's going to be a handful for anybody in a fight, let alone a 45-year-old man who's lost eight of his last 11 contests and hasn't beaten a decent heavyweight since submitting Bas Rutten nearly 14 years ago.

Perhaps this is a blessing disguise after all.

‘Mask’ from TapouT killed in car crash

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 12:25 PM PDT

Props: Los Angeles Times

Quoteworthy:

“A bizarre car crash in Newport Beach involving two luxury cars early this morning left one person dead, a second injured, a third arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and a fourth person was detained by police long enough to sober up. A Newport Beach Police Department officer allegedly witnessed the wreck and saw a red Ferrari and a white Porsche ’spinning out of control’ on Jamboree Road between Bison Avenue and East Bluff Drive at 12:57 a.m., Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox said. The Ferrari “hit the curb and then collided with a pole.’ The Porsche came to a stop at the scene for a few seconds and then sped away, Fox said. ‘It was terrible. It was extensive damage to the vehicle,’ Fox said, adding that the Ferrari appeared to have split in half…. He said the investigation is ongoing but that police identified skid marks at the scene ‘consistent with excessive speeding.’”

Mauro Ranallo — Fight Network Radio host — confirmed that the dead individual is indeed “Charles Lewis Jr. also known as Mask, the founder of multi-million dollar company, popular MMA clothing line and television show TapouT.” Rest in peace.

BJ Penn files formal complaint with NSAC against Georges St. Pierre over UFC 94 greasing controversy

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 11:50 AM PDT

UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn filed a formal complaint against Georges St. Pierre with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) on Monday, requesting that “Rush” be penalized for allegedly greasing his body between rounds of their championship title fight held at UFC 94 on Jan. 31 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Here’s a snip:

"It is Penn's belief… that the strategies were intentional and were orchestrated by Pierre as a means to unfairly and illegally defeat Penn in a regulated and sanctioned championship bout that prohibits the aforementioned conduct and that such calculated actions by Pierre were implemented as a means to prevent Penn from defending himself in a manner consistent with that contemplated in unarmed combat due to the highly and unnaturally slippery nature of Pierre during the bout.”

During the main event of 'St. Pierre vs. Penn 2,' cornerman Phil Nurse applied Vaseline to the back and shoulders of Georges St. Pierre, which is prohibited under the current rules of the sport. Ringside officials noticed the petroleum jelly on the backside of the Canadian and sprung into action, wiping him down with towels after rounds two and three.

"Rush" isn't giving excuses for the incident, saying it was just a minor mistake caused by the between-round frenzy and was part of a breathing technique. UFC President Dana White — who is taking the issue very seriously — has since blamed "stupid" cornermen (Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse) for the infraction.

Penn — who was dominated by the Canadian for four straight rounds before he was unable to answer the bell for the fifth and final frame — recently requested that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) investigate St. Pierre and his corner for "greasing" during their main event fight.

Now he’s made it official with a formal complaint — and he’s seeking some pretty hefty punishment for the St. Pierre group including:

  • A fine of $250,000
  • Suspension of St. Pierre's license as well as the licenses of Jackson and Nurse
  • Change the result of the bout to a "no contest"
  • Require St. Pierre undergo a pre-bout shower to make sure no substances exist on his body

Penn is requesting a formal hearing from the NSAC to decide on an appropriate course of action. Whether or not the infractions on the part of St. Pierre were intentional or just a case of carelessness is for the commission to decide. Until then, it looks as though we’ll be mired in ‘Greasegate’ for days and weeks to come.

Joy.

More on this situation as it develops.

Lyoto Machida to replace Quinton Jackson against Rashad Evans at UFC 98 on May 23

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 10:42 AM PDT

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans (13-0-1) will defend his crown against undefeated 205-pound division contender Lyoto Machida (14-0) in the main event of UFC 98 from The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, May 23, 2009 according to SI.com.

UFC 98: “Identity Crisis,” was originally headlined by Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, who were set to collide in a heavyweight title unification bout until Mir was forced to bow out with a knee injury that required minor surgery.

Mir and Lesnar are now scheduled for fisticuffs at UFC 100 on July 11.

The main event was quickly (and awkwardly) changed to Quinton Jackson vs. Rashad Evans during the UFC 96 broadcast on March 8. “Rampage” defeated Evans’ teammate Keith Jardine via unanimous decision and had a nice war of words with “Sugar” following the bout, but appeared lukewarm to the idea of competing just over two months after his scrap with “The Dean of Mean.”

Now it appears nagging injuries and a brutal training camp have left Jackson  — who would have competed three times in the span of five months — a little worse for the wear, and he’s now opted to settle for the title of number one contender with a guaranteed shot at the winner of Evans vs. Machida at some point in late 2009.

“The Dragon” has been patiently waiting for a crack at the title, all the while stringing together six straight victories inside the Octagon, including his coming out party at UFC 94 where he floored Thiago Silva in the first round for his first(T)KO finish under the UFC banner.

Like Machida, Evans has taken some heat in the past for his cautious approach. That all but went out the window after a devastating KO over former light heavyweight deity Chuck Liddell and a decisive TKO finish against ex-205 champ Forrest Griffin.

Now pitted against one another, it will be interesting to see if they revert back to the run-and-gun approach or if someone gets the lights shut off in the first round.

Also on the May 23 card, former UFC welterweight champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will settle their eternal grudge match and former number one middleweight contender Yushin Okami will return to the Octagon to challenge the surging 185-pound standout Dan Miller.

Strikeforce ‘Shamrock vs Diaz’ to go head-to-head with UFC 94 replay on Spike TV April 11

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 08:54 AM PDT

Grease is the word.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has once again scheduled big-time Spike TV programming to counter an event from a competing promotion.

"Shamrock vs. Diaz" on April 11 is the first effort from Strikeforce since it acquired select Pro Elite assets, including a vast tape library and dozens of fighter contracts left over from EliteXC.

And just like it did with Elite XC, Dana White and Co. are going to do their best to retain as many MMA fans as possible by simultaneously airing one of its biggest pay-per-view events.

On the same night and at the same time, Spike TV will debut UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2," which of course is now known simply as “Greasegate,” thanks to some questionable tactics by the corner of GSP.

St. Pierre defeated Penn via technical knockout to retain the welterweight crown in the UFC 94 main event. Also on the card, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida knocked out fellow light heavyweight contender Thiago Silva to move one step closer to a bout with “Sugar” Rashad Evans.

It originally took place on January 31, 2009.

This latest news, of course, should come as no surprise since Zuffa has made a habit of counter programming in the past. The UFC went up against the Elite XC debut show on CBS last May with a tribute to perhaps the most popular mixed martial artist on the planet, Chuck LIddell, called "Ultimate Iceman."

They also hastily put together UFC Fight Night 14 to draw interest away from the debut of Affliction: "Banned" on PPV last July with a main event between Anderson “The Spider” Silva and James “The Sandman” Irvin.

For Affliction’s second effort, “Day of Reckoning” on January 24, the UFC answered with a replay of UFC 91 “Lesnar vs. Couture.”

Strikeforce can be now be considered a major player in mixed martial arts with their current and future line up of combat athletes, coupled with their pending cable and network television deals.

While UFC President Dana White has long since supported the efforts of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, he is by no means going to let his success in the big market come without its share of roadblocks.

Competition 101. Let the games begin.

MMA Quick Quote: Paulo Filho rules out Bellator; Eyes Strikeforce

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 06:38 AM PDT

“We have offered Paulo to Sengoku or Strikeforce and that is where we want, if possible straight into a fight with Robbie Lawler…. The contract of Bellator is cruel. It is a new event and we opted not to put Paulo there because they did not want to put a clause in the contract that, if the guy is not fighting for four months, the contract loses its validity. We were just victims of this in EliteXC, which was bought out and left athletes at its mercy and without fighting for a good while."

– Jorge Guimaraes — the trainer for former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho — tells Tatame (via Fighters Only magazine) that his fighter passed on an opportunity to compete under the Bellator Fighting Championships banner this summer. Instead, the Brazlian jiu-jitsu black belt is interested in returning to Japan to work for World Victory Road or stay stateside and try out the new-look Strikeforce. Zuffa executives opted not to move Filho from the WEC to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after a dreadful and bizarre performance against Chael Sonnen last year. Filho came in drastically overweight for the title fight and then delivered an extremely sluggish and "incoherent" performance. It was clear that the previously world-ranked and undefeated 185-pound fighter was clearly not right. And only time will tell if he can somehow recapture his old form.
