Terry Etim reportedly set to do battle against Justin Buchholz at UFC 99 on June 13

Posted: 05 Mar 2009 10:39 PM PST

The card for UFC 99 continues to come together with the addition of lightweight scrappers Terry Etim (12-2) and Justin Buchholz (8-2), set to do battle from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13 according to Fighters Only Magazine.

The two were originally paired up for UFC 95 on February 21 until a late injury forced Buchholz off the card. He was replaced by Palace Fighting Championship headliner Brian Cobb.

Etim thanked “The Bandit” for stepping up on short notice with a brutal second round TKO. The win over Cobb was his second in a row after a unanimous decision nod over Sam Stout at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" back in October 2008.

Buchholz on the other hand hasn’t competed since choking out Corey Hill at UFC 86 “Jackson vs. Griffin” last July. The Sacramento native has won five of his past six fights, with the only blemish on the former ICON Sport fighter’s record during that span being a first-round submission loss to Matt Wiman at UFC Fight Night 12 in his Octagon debut.

It should be a good scrap between two talented up-and-comers.

UFC 99 is expected to be headlined by former middleweight champion Rich "Ace" Franklin taking on ex-PRIDE smashing machine Wanderlei Silva in his middleweight debut. Heath Herring and Cain Velasquez as well as Mike Swick and Ben Saunders are also expected to hook 'em up.

Marcus Davis vs Dan Hardy UFC 99 fight booked for June 13

Posted: 05 Mar 2009 04:52 PM PST

Ask and you shall receive.

It appears that Marcus Davis (16-4) is making Joe Silva’s job as matchmaker an easy one, agreeing to take on Dan Hardy (21-6) — who called him out after a win over Rory Markham at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” last month — at UFC 99: “Redemption” from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13.

Davis took on Chris Lytle at UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” on Jan. 17 after “Lights Out” called him out after defeating Paul Taylor at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" in October 2008. “The Irish Hand Grenade” went on to win the 170-pound clash via split decision, setting a modern day record for combined total strikes in a professional mixed martial arts bout.

Prior to the win, the heavy-handed Davis — a former professional boxer — earned a slick second round submission win over Paul Kelly at UFC 89.  The former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 boasts eight wins in 10 fights for the promotion, which is considerably more than Hardy’s two wins in as many performances.

Perhaps that’s the reason Davis intends to smash the relative UFC newcomer’s face into dust when they meet inside the Octagon in Cologne.

On the other hand, Hardy may feel that he can do some smashing of his own after wrecking Markham with a first round knockout blow that put the Miletich-trained fighter out for the count. “The Outlaw” also has a split decsion win over the venerable veteran Akihiro Gono to his credit, highlighting that the blooming British star has not had an easy road since his debut for the organization.

It will be more of the same when he gets locked inside the eight-sided cage opposite Mr. Davis.

Ken Shamrock: Bobby Lashley is not a fat guy laying on his back

Quoteworthy:

"I've done a lot of firsts. I was the first heavyweight champ of MMA and first foreign champ in Japan. This is the first time two champions (Jones and Shamrock) in their individual sports, at this level, will be fighting on the same card – boxing and MMA. I think it's the way of the future and it's happening now. Lashley got things going in wrestling and then the WWE. Now he's in MMA. He's very good. I think he's 270-pounds of muscle – quick, explosive and strong. The area he lacks, gound skills, he makes up for with his strength and ability to move on the ground. He can really move on his feet. This isn't a fat guy laying on his back."

UFC Hall-of-Famer Ken Shamrock (27-13-2) prepares for his upcoming bout against former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley at "March Badness" — a hybrid mixed martial arts and boxing event being put on by former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Fla., on March 21. “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” is coming off his first win in almost five years at Wargods “Valentine’s Eve Massacre” where he harpooned Ross Clifton early in round one. Shammy doesn’t anticipate the same level of resistance from Lashley - though it may not matter once the hulking behemoth gets his hands on the 45-year old MMA pioneer.

UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin likes to punch people in the face

Posted: 05 Mar 2009 10:33 AM PST

Anytime that I go into the Octagon it’s the same thing for me, it’s a fight, I get amped up. I know that guy’s training to rip my head off and I’m training to rip his head off and that’s just how it goes. I love to be in there, there’s something about being able to punch somebody else in the face and being able to take those shots too. I don’t mind being hit. I see it as a chess match on the feet and a major part of the game that I happen to have fun with. My game is constantly evolving, I’m still pretty young to this sport. My stand-up and my jiu-jitsu have to come up to par with my wrestling. [Gonzaga] is a well-rounded opponent, I’m not gonna force a takedown or anything, I can see it taking place on the feet or on the ground and submissions are something that I’m very comfortable with. [With] my cardio right now where I am, I’m in the best shape of my life.

– Undefeated heavyweight behemoth Shane Carwin talks to Pro MMA Radio about his training and preparation for Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96: "Jackson vs. Jardine" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. Carwin is actually still only fighting part time, working full-time as an engineer for the North Weld County Water District in Colorado when he is not in the gym. That's kind of scary, considering the way in which he has absolutely manhandled his opponents thus far throughout his career as a "part-time" fighter. His fight against “Napao” will be the biggest of his young career and could determine a contender for the winner of Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar 2 at UFC 98 on May 23. Welcome back heavyweight division, we sorely missed you.

Rich Franklin won’t be making any assumptions against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99 on June 13

Quoteworthy:

“Wanderlei is very dangerous. You can’t discount all that he did in Pride. Those knees and his aggression are legendary in this sport and that’s what I am going in against. You saw what he did to Keith Jardine in, what was it, 36 seconds? He can do that in a heartbeat if I let him. I don’t expect him to go for any takedowns, but I learned the hard way not to underestimate anybody in any area. I really thought that, before I fought Anderson Silva, that because I was bigger I would be stronger and in my sweet spot in the clinch. I made an assumption and what happened, happened. I won’t be making those assumptions again.”

-Former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin tries to remain grounded heading into his fight against former PRIDE smashing machine Wanderlei Silva. “Ace” will be headlining UFC 99 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13 as part of the promotions first event ever held in the land of Berliner Kindl. Both Franklin and “The Axe Murderer” are coming off losses but Silva, who is 1-4 in his last five fights including three by knockout, may have the most to lose. Wandy has his back to the wall with nothing to lose — and that may make him more dangerous than ever. Train hard, Mr. Franklin.
