UFC Quick Quote: Rashad Evans has one head

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 07:45 PM PDT

“I know Rashad's a super-strategic fighter, is good at wrestling, good at boxing, and hits real hard. But I've already fought a lot of guys like that. And this is just another fight for me. I can't let myself think this is some seven-headed monster, I'm going to get out there and do my job. I think that's what's important. That's the mentality that will make me stronger.”

– Undefeated light heavyweight Lyoto Machida talks to GracieMag.com about his upcoming title fight against reigning 205-pound champion “Sugar” Rashad Evans at UFC 98 on May 23. “Dragon” — who has six wins, including two finishes inside the Octagon — has patiently waited for his opportunity to become a world champion. And it came earlier this week when Quinton “Rampage” Jackson had to pass on fighting Evans because of nagging injuries. The Brazilian most recently upped his stock with a fantastic finish of the previously unbeaten Thiago Silva at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ on Jan. 31. He’ll know look to stifle the juking and jiving champion in the main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Can he do it … or will Evans somehow find a way to solve the enigma that is Lyoto Machida? For the record: Machida is currently a very heavy favorite among the sportsbooks to win the fight.

Dana White: Chuck Liddell needs to ‘dazzle me’ at UFC 97 to keep fighting

“I’ve made it very clear to Chuck. Very clear. It’s not about money, it’s not about this, that. Chuck is one of my good friends. Chuck (has) cemented his legacy in the UFC and in the fight game. I’m not even saying if he wins, unless he looks incredibly impressive (in Montreal) - I mean, he’s going to have to go out there and dazzle me, for me to want Chuck to still fight. I love him, and I don’t want to see what I saw in his last fight ever again.”

UFC President Dana White has an interesting take on the future of his good friend — and perhaps still his biggest draw — former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. “Iceman” got iced bad his last time out, sustaining a vicious knockout courtesy of Rashad Evans at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” in September 2008. It marked the third loss in four fights for the San Luis Obispo, Calif., resident and the second brutal knockout during that span. He next fights former Pride FC wrecking machine Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the co main event at UFC 97: “Redemption” from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on April 18. It should be interesting to see how the cool and calm Liddell responds to White turning up the heat while he’s possibly in the twilight of his legendary career. Hmmm ….

Jon Jones vs Jake O’Brien on tap for UFC 100 on July 11

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 12:43 PM PDT

Light heavyweight sensation Jon Jones (8-0) has reportedly agreed to battle wrestling standout Jake O’Brien (11-2) at UFC 100 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11according to TheGarv.com.

Jones scored a lopsided unanimous decision win over UFC veteran Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" back in January, electrifying the crowd with his raw talent and improvisation within the cage that included suplexes, spinning backfists, double spinning back elbows … crazy stuff.

It marked the eighth career win for "Bones," who is a decorated collegiate wrestler that recently made the transition to mixed martial arts and is already making some major waves at the UFC level.

He'll have his hands full, however, against a very tough wrestler in O’Brien.

O'Brien was actually among several fighters cut from their contracts when the promotion was out to trim its roster. In hindsight, it was perhaps to soon because O'Brien had just one loss in four attempts inside the Octagon. And that was a defeat to former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" back in March.

While he got trounced by heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez at UFC Fight Night 14 back in July 2008, the now 205-pound O’Brien rebounded with a split-decision win over Christian Wellisch at UFC 94.

He holds notable wins over Heath Herring, Josh Shockman and Kristof Midoux while under contract with promotion.

This could be a tough fight for O'Brien who has traditionally relied on his athleticism and strong wrestling skills to defeat his opponents. That's because Jones more than likely can hold his own in the wrestling and may have a major advantage in striking prowess.

UFC 100 features two major title fights: Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir will tangle to declare an undisputed division champion and Georges St. Pierre will once again defend his 170-pound strap against number one contender, Thiago Alves.

In addition, TUF 9 coaches, Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping, are slated to meet and determine who earns the right to challenge the reigning middleweight champion later in 2009.
