MMA Quick Quote: Ken Shamrock makes the world’s most dangerous prediction

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 07:20 PM PDT

“If you ask [my brother Frank Shamrock], I smoke crack, I do steroids and I cut myself (to get out of the Kimbo Slice fight). I mean you name it, I’ve done it — just ask him.”

-Mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock — just hours before news broke about him testing positive for three illegal anabolic steroids — Norandrosterone, Noretiocholanolone and Stanozolol following his first round armbar submission win over Ross Clifton at War Gods: "Valentine's Eve Massacre," reveals to host Larry Pepe on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio that his estranged brother Frank likes to tell people about Ken’s alleged addictions and erratic behavior. If the recent drug test is any indication, Lil’ Shammy doesn’t sound so crazy after all.

Kimbo Slice ready for a career in boxing

Quoteworthy:

“Boxing is really my first desire. I have a lot of love for it and believe I can do pretty well. [The sport of] MMA is somewhat of a project for me. Boxing is one dimensional while there are a lot of dimensions in MMA. I don’t think it would be a hard transition from MMA to stand-up boxing because of my fighting style. Not taking anything away from boxing preparation, MMA training is extremely hard. When you consider martial arts training, you have to prepare for kicks to the head and legs, and opponents wanting to grapple and throwing you to the ground, pounding you with their knees and hands, whereas in boxing you just have to be prepared to weave and bob although the training can be just as intense. At this point in my career, I want to take that same drive and focus that I invested in MMA and put that into training for pro-boxing cards.”

-Former EliteXC headliner Kevin Ferguson considers a move to boxing after the rise and fall of his very brief MMA career. “Kimbo Slice” still has two MMA fights remaining on his contract and hasn’t competed since losing in just 14 seconds at Elite XC: "Heat" on October 4, 2008 to replacement fighter Seth Petruzelli. Can Kimbo recapture some of the hype that propelled him into a main event in front of millions on CBS? Or has the former backyard brawler used up his fifteen minutes? Time will tell…

Karo Parisyan suspension to last nine months; UFC 94 win ruled ‘No Contest’

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 11:57 AM PDT

karo parisyan

Karo Parisyan was today formally suspended for nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after testing positive for several major painkillers following his controversial split decision win over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on Jan. 31.

Under the terms of the ruling, "The Heat" was also fined 40 percent of his purse ($32,000) and his win over the Korean was ruled a "No Contest," meaning that "Stun Gun" is once again undefeated. In addition, Parisyan could be the subject of stricter “out of competition” drug tests in the future.

When news first broke about the positive test, the 26-year-old fighter met with the commission in an effort to tell his side of the story. No progress was made on either side and the NSAC rescheduled a formal hearing for today to allow both parties ample time to put their cases together.

However, it appears that the Armenian Judo player and his legal team could not sway the commission, which voted unanimously to impose the punishment.

That's more than likely because the finding was a serious one — Hydrocodone (Vicodin), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and Oxymorphone (which is about six to eight times stronger than morphine) all come with relatively high levels of dependency for regular users. They are all prescription-strength painkillers.

Parisyan has recently battled a nervous disorder, as well as injuries, which forced him out of a match against Yoshiyuki Yoshida less than 24 hours before showtime back in September 2008.

Hopefully, he uses the time off to get his career — and life — back on track. He is eligible to return in late October 2009.

Brett Rogers vs Ron Humphries Strikeforce fight on tap for April 11

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 11:36 AM PDT

A heavyweight mixed martial arts contest between undefeated prospects Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) and Ron Humphries (5-0) has been inked for the main card portion of Shotime’s Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on April 11 according to Five Ounces of Pain.

The late addition will replace a scheduled welterweight scrap between the last reigning Elite XC 170-pound champion Jake Shields and UFC veteran Joe “Diesel” Riggs, which was scrapped last week to free Shields up for a blockbuster fight against “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in May.

Rogers (6′5″ 265 pounds) made a name for himself under the Elite XC banner by stopping three straight opponents (Ralph Kelly, James Thompson and Jon Murphy) with punches from November of 2007 through May of last year. However, he’s probably best remembered for feuding with — but never getting a chance to fight — company poster boy Kimbo Slice.

For the majority of 2008, The Grim lobbied hard for a chance to face the infamous street fighter in the cage, but for whatever reason the promoters weren’t in love with the match-up, leaving that fight (along with countless others) remaining in the “what if” category for the Elite XC matchmakers.

Now, nearly a year since last seeing action, Rogers will finally get his chance to do what he does best once again, which is knock people out. In fact, all eight of his career opponents have been stopped in the first round by the ridiculously hard-hitting Team Bison product.

Potential victim number nine will be Ron Humphries — a contestant on BET’s “Iron Ring” reality show last year — who is basically a knockout artist himself. All five of his opponents have also tasted defeat in the first round from strikes.

He’s a three-fight veteran of the International Sport Combat Federation and most recently dropped Nick Thomas on the promotion’s “Bad Intentions” card in December.

It’s pretty safe to say that this one probably won’t last too long, but if it does, there’s no telling what either of these guy’s stamina will be like past the opening stanza. The smart money says someone’s going to sleep early though.
