Melvin Guillard vs Thiago Tavares on tap for UFC 101

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 07:02 PM PDT

He’s baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack …

Controversial and star-crossed lightweight Melvin Guillard (21-7-2) will attempt to get back into the cage when he returns against Thiago Tavares (14-3) at UFC 101 in Portland, Ore., on August 8, according to MMAWeekly.com.

The report indicates that bout agreements have been distributed to both fighters; however, nothing is official at this time.

Guillard was rumored to return the Octagon against promotional newcomer Ronys Torres at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, Tenn., on April 1. That fight, however, never materialized. He was also expected to take on Spencer Fisher at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on Oct. 25.

However, the "Young Assassin" was arrested in Houston, Texas, on August 13 of that same year for violating probation on a 2007 drug charge. The enigmatic former contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) was released to a drug treatment facility per the terms of his recently amended probation.

The talented 25-year-old Louisiana native appeared to have slayed his personal demons, destroying Denis Siver at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July 2008 — his return fight after being released by the UFC for, among other things, his relationship with illegal drugs.

In fact, Guillard tested positive for cocaine after his loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC Fight Night 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April 2007. He was fined and suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for the transgression.

One has to imagine that he’s used up most if not all of his nine lives, meaning that a win is critical for Guillard, but it won’t come easy against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu player with talent like Tavares — Guillard has demonstrated throughout his up-and-down career that he has lackluster submission defense.

After bursting onto the UFC scene with two straight wins, Tavares created quite a buzz — he was being touted as a possible threat to the champion. However, he has since come back down to Earth, losing three of his last five fights.

His last appearance inside the cage was a unanimous decision win over Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ on January 31. Putting the final nail in the coffin of Guillard’s UFC career would more than likely propel him back into the mix.

Either way, I don’t expect this bout to disappoint.

UFC 101 will reportedly feature a main event between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy "The Natural" Couture as he locks horns with former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira. Thiago Silva and ex-205-pound kingpin Forrest Griffin are also expected to hook ‘em up.

UFC 101: Forrest Griffin vs Thiago Silva in the works for August 8

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 06:02 PM PDT

Former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-5) is in talks to return to the eight-sided cage against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1) at UFC 101 in Portland, Oregon, on August 8, according to Tatame.com.

The report indicates that while nothing is official, the 205-pound showdown is likely to go down at the end of summer.

The light heavyweight winner of the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) until June 27, 2009 due to a broken left hand that he suffered in the second round of his fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 92 “The Ultimate 2008″ last December.

Griffin apparently needed to have pins surgically inserted into the hand to expedite the healing process. He is expected to be cleared to resume punching as early as next week, and could conceivably be ready in time for August.

Prior to the loss to "Sugar," Griffin had taken three straight, including a submission win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 76 and a unanimous decision over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 86 to claim the 205-pound title.

His planned return at UFC 101 won’t be an easy one.

Silva has made a habit of demolishing his opponents. Before getting stopped at UFC 94 “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ by uber-enigma Lyoto Machida on January 31, Silva had finished 12 of his 13 fights, including 10 (T)KO’s.

Scary stuff.

Silva brings the fierce Chute Boxe aggression into his fights (even though he is now no longer with the camp). He has an explosive mix of punches and kicks, which can often leave him open to counter strikes.

However, Silva has proven that he can take punishment and dish out more … just ask Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes.

UFC 101 is expected to feature a main event between Randy “The Natural” Couture as he locks horns with Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira in a dream match-up that most fans expected to see at UFC 98 on May 23 before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Griffin, Silva, Couture and Nogueira. UFC 101 is beginning to shape up quite nicely — and we’re still five months away.

Jenna Jameson delivers twin baby boys; Tito Ortiz a father again

Quoteworthy:

“Retired porn star Jenna Jameson gave birth to two little boys Monday morning. These are the first children for 43-year-old Jameson and her boyfriend of two years, UFC fighter Tito Ortiz, 33, and they are said to be in ‘very good health.’”

Congrats to the happy parents on their mini cagefighters. While the dynamic duo will more than likely not see the inside of an Octagon anytime soon (if ever as long as Dana White is still UFC president, anyway), Daddy Ortiz is coming off successful back surgery and has hinted about a possible return later this year. Perhaps sooner rather than later now that he has two more mouths to feed. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” is still a free agent and has not found a new promotion to call home since his last fight (a unanimous decision loss) to current number one 205-pound contender, Lyoto Machida, at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May 2008.

MMA Quick Quote: Bobby Lashely in for a ‘rude awakening’ against Jason Guida

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 05:41 PM PDT

"I'm always training and this has become my MO. I do a lot of short notice fights, where I've been most successful, and this fight fell into my lap. I've always made the best of it and I plan on doing the same Saturday night in Pensacola. I want to fight the top guys; Lashley may not be a top guy but he's a top name, and beating him will put me on the map again…. I definitely see my experience being a huge factor. But Lashley has less experience than Kimbo and I have more than Seth had. I don't know if Seth (he stopped Kimbo in the opening round) was set to go three rounds, but I'm ready to finish Lashley or outpoint him. I was training for a fight that fell-out in February and I just kept training. Size doesn't matter. I've had my best fights against big guys and put my hands on guys bigger than Bobby. I wrestled (UFC heavyweight champion) Brock Lesnar in junior college. I don't think Lashley has the background or knows how to put his body into MMA as well as Lesnar. MMA is new to Bobby. I don't have anything against him. Someday he could be good for MMA. I welcome him, after I beat him, to work at our club (Hellhouse) to learn how to fight. Lashley's going to find out that this is MMA not WWE. He's in for a rude awakening, which probably will be a good thing — he'll be fighting a real MMA guy. I don't wish him any ill harm, in fact, I wish him the best because beating him will look even better if he goes on to succeed in MMA."

– Last minute replacement Jason Guida — who will fill-in for the suspended Ken Shamrock (steroids) — talks up his upcoming clash with former WWE superstar and absolute shredded monster/collegiate wrestling specimen, Bobby Lashley, at "March Badness" from the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Fla., on March 21. Guida (17-19) — brother of UFC lightweight contender Clay Guida — recently squandered perhaps the biggest opportunity of his fighting career when he was booted off the first episode of "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) 8 for failing to make the 205-pound division limit. This is apparently his chance at redemption. Oh boy.

Chris Lytle vs Kevin Burns signed for TUF 9 Finale

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 05:39 PM PDT

Fourteen-fight UFC veteran Chris Lytle (26-17) will go for number 15 when he locks horns with Kevin Burns (7-2) in a welterweight tilt set for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale at "The Pearl" at the Palms Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 20.

“Lights Out” is coming off yet another “Fight of the Night” performance in his most recent outing, slugging it out with Marcus Davis for three rounds at UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” on Jan. 17. As usual, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 runner up turned in a sparkling performance; however, he was once again on the wrong end of a split decision.

Lytle has now dropped three of his last five fights and five of his last nine. But that hasn’t stopped the organization from extending the contract of the father of four and inviting him back because of his electric performances — he always leaves it inside the cage.

Now the Indiana fireman — who has lost to former champions Matt Serra and Matt Hughes, as well as current number one contender Thiago Alves and Josh Koscheck during the span mentioned above — will attempt to get back on the winning track when he touches gloves with Burns during the Spike TV special.

Burns is also coming off a tough loss to Anthony Johnson at TUF 8 Finale in Dec. 2008, absorbing a wicked head kick that had him out before he hit the canvas in the third round. It was a solid fight up until that point and it looked like it was headed for the judges scorecards.

It never got that far.

The Des Moines, Iowa-based fighter had previously scored a controversial technical knockout win over “Rumble” in their first encounter at UFC Fight Night 14 in July 2008. Burns dropped Johnson with an illegal eye poke, which later required surgery to repair. Unfortunately, the referee didn’t see exactly what happened and called a halt to the bout prematurely.

Let’s hope we don’t see similar shenanigans when Burns and Lytle hook ‘em up on fight night. It should be a solid scrap — Burns has shown that he is comfortable on his feet and does not shy away from going toe-to-toe. We all know what Lytle can do.

And if the fight does hit the mat both fighters have demonstrated strong submission skills to win it there, too, if necessary.

TUF 9 will debut on April 1 and feature the lightweight and welterweight finales for the upcoming ninth season of TUF with coach Dan Henderson leading a US team against coach Michael Bisping and his British squad. The finalists from those divisions will also be featured on the televised Spike TV main card on June 20.

Diego Sanchez is expected to headline the show in a lightweight match against Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson and Nate Diaz are also likely to tangle in another fantastic 155-pound showdown. I love it when a good card comes together.

MMA Quick Quote: Tim Sylvia is an OxyMoron

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 11:15 AM PDT

"I'm going to be up in the Boston area shooting a movie called OxyMorons. I'm one of the main characters and will be up there for three weeks (filming) … This is definitely going to be a busy year for myself in fighting. I'm looking to have three fights between now and the end of summer. I'm getting back in there and I'm looking to get into title contention in whatever organization I make a home … They want me on the card for Affliction 3 – and I want to be on the card – but we don't know about opponents or what's going to happen yet."

-Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia talks to MMAWeekly about his busy year in and out of the fight game. In addition to boxing former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer at the Adrenaline III card from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ on May 30, “The Maine-iac” will be starring in a film about OxyContin as well as keeping his MMA career afloat with Affliction or any other promotion still interested in the avid hunter and outdoorsman.
