Hate stuff, break stuff: An MMAmania.com interview exclusive with Forrest Griffin

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 09:45 PM PDT

When fans talk about the overnight success of the UFC, most of the time the first name mentioned is that of Chuck Liddell.

And while “The Iceman” is indeed responsible for taking pay-per-view buys into uncharted territory, it is his television counterpart that helped transform mixed martial arts into an acceptable form of mainstream entertainment.

If Chuck Liddell was the manifesto, then Forrest Griffin was the revolution itself.

Live on Spike TV, in front of an audience that no one was quite sure they would ever capture again, Griffin polarized the causal fan with a gritty performance opposite Stephan Bonnar in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) that may go down as the greatest mixed martial arts fight ever featured on live television.

And to the victor belong the spoils.

Griffin would eventually legitimize not only himself, but also the TUF farm system by capturing the light heavyweight title from Quinton Jackson at UFC 86. He may have subsequently surrendered that title to another TUF grad, Rashad Evans at UFC 92, but he will never surrender his legacy in the evolution of the UFC.

Now, after spending most of the year sidelined with a broken hand he suffered back in January, Griffin is poised to return at UFC 101 on August 8, against mixed martial arts’ deadliest warrior: Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

Griffin was called to duty to succeed where others have failed. His mission is not just to dethrone the Brazilian juggernaut, but to force him to engage, and prove himself worthy of the championship title.

We know why, now find out how, in our exclusive interview with Forrest Griffin.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): You were all set to take on a tough opponent in Thiago Silva and he seemed like an ideal match-up for you coming off the hand injury. Why did you decide to fight Anderson Silva instead?

Forrest Griffin: I didn't feel I was as mentally tough as I should have been preparing for the fight. I wanted to really test myself. You see a lot of guys fight Anderson and they just don't look like themselves. They don't look like they want to be there or look like they have any confidence. I want to at least come in and fight up to my ability. So this fight will either bring out the best in me … or I will have to go out and find a real job.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): It seemed like everything happened so fast. Can you tell us exactly how the UFC pulled off the ol’ Silva switch-a-roo?

Forrest Griffin: Nope, I have no idea. They came to me and said, 'Hey Forrest; you want to fight a different Silva' and I said ‘Sure.’ We were doing a photo shoot for something, for what I’m not sure, and you-know-who came over and said, 'Hey I gotta talk to you' and I said 'What, I didn't do anything wrong.' This ain't rocket science, if they ask me to fight someone, I’ll fight someone.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Do you see this fight with Silva as a shortcut toward getting back into a title fight or is it just one high-profile fight at a time for you?

Forrest Griffin: Yeah, I don't know man. I’m not really worried about all that. I’m just focused on dealing with this dude. I just want to show up prepared and actually fight the guy. I just don't think anyone has actually tried to fight him up to their ability.

Irvin went in and charged him, Leben when in and charged him. He’s a southpaw counter-striker … it's not like I’m going to go jump his shit. If you rush into that guy you're rushing into a knockout. So I’m going to fight the guy, I’ll hit him, and not get too frustrated when I miss. Because he makes you miss and then he makes you pay for it.

He’s made a lot of guys feel stupid. It's when guys get hit, and then they can't hit him back; they just look hopeless … like they almost want the fight to be over.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Anderson Silva is considered a lethal striker but can he really hit you any harder than Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans already have?

Forrest Griffin: (Laughing) You know, a lot of guys have hit me real hard. The thing about Silva is that he’s going to hit me a lot quicker. He’s got a great reach, he actually has the same reach I do and I am not going to be much bigger.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Well you're considered a pretty strapping young man. Are you saying your size is not really going to play an advantage for you this time?

Forrest Griffin: I normally step into the Octagon at around 220. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind if Silva and I fought this fight at a catchweight of 215. I would come in at 225, which would be beautiful for me. When I’m fat, the first ten pounds are what can slow me down but the next ten pounds I really don't need to lose; it's just to make weight. I could actually function better with it. When I start my weight cut, I feel good, I feel faster but you only need to shed so much fat. Honestly, where the sport is heading, we could have a weight class every ten pounds.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Do you think that is where we're heading as the sport grows and we get more and more athletic guys competing?

Forrest Griffin: Yeah I do, but I don't see them adding any new weight classes for at least five years. The adding of weight classes should parallel and keep pace with the continuing growth of the sport. With the heavyweight division there is not a need for creating a super heavyweight division yet. There might be six guys that would compete there.

But if it weren't for the NFL and NBA we'd have ten more weight classes. If you're athletic enough and you're over 200 pounds, you're either playing college football or basketball. Talent goes where the money is. It's as simple as that. That's why I got into the sport. I was like, 'Hey I could do this.'

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): So are you saying you beat the talent to the punch in terms of you getting into MMA?

Forrest Griffin: Hell yeah. In five years, I don't know that I’ll be able to compete at the level I do now. That's just a legitimate statement. The guys competing are just getting so good and they keep coming. All these freaking wrestlers are coming out of the woodwork. They’re great and it's really unfair you know. I can't wrestle; I haven’t wrestled my whole life. I don't remember what I was doing but I wasn't wrestling, that's for sure.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Anderson Silva decided to also call out Fedor Emelianenko in a recent interview. Do you have any intentions of calling out Fedor or Brock Lesnar for that matter?

Forrest Griffin: He said he wants to fight Fedor? Well I’ll help ease him into that heavier weight class if that’s where he wants go. Like I said earlier, let's go ahead and make this fight at 215. That would suite me just fine.

As far as Fedor goes, fighting in the UFC is a contractual thing. If you’re going to fight for the UFC, well you're going to fight for the UFC. They are the best show in town so if Fedor wants to come on over …

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Submission, T(KO), or a decision win. What's your best bet for scoring a victory in this fight?

Forrest Griffin: I will come up with a game plan. I need to score some takedowns while avoiding any guillotine. Silva has got those long limbs. I go back to Silva being a southpaw. Also, his quickness and the unexpectedness of his style are on my mind. I have never fought a southpaw that I struck with before.

I don't like the idea of fighting a southpaw, it's weird. And his clinch work, he is just so relaxed when doing it. Other than that I’m not too worried about the fight; it's only going to be 15 minutes so what's the worst that can happen?

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): How is your surgically repaired hand doing?

Forrest Griffin: It's good, it’ll be ready to go.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): What are your thoughts on the Lyoto Machida-Rashad Evans title fight?

Forrest Griffin: It could start out real slow since they both have a tendency to counter fight. So it could end up being a boring fight to some or it could end up being a very exciting fight. At this level, with the competition, you make one mistake, you get clipped, and your night’s over. It's unfortunate but it is what it is.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Hindsight is always 20-20. What could you have done differently in your fight with Rashad Evans to come away victorious, especially since you were winning the fight up until that point?

Forrest Griffin: Obviously the body kick was not a good idea (laughing). With the body kick, I didn't get my feet back down and so I didn't get a punch in. And not getting punched in the face when you're off balance and looking up with your head wobbling around.

And not get hit a bunch on the ground either. Also, you can't rest. With the round almost over, I thought I might chill for a second. I just can't chill with my opponent punching me in the face. It was what it was though. Obviously I can beat Rashad, so I look forward to a rematch with him; with Jackson too.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): Well speaking of Rampage, he was pretty vocal about fighting you again. After his win over Wanderlei, he said he was willing to wait on a title fight and rematch you first.

Forrest Griffin: I've never even heard that before. As far as Jackson, I have never seen a guy so mad over having a bad night. It's not like I had the best night either. I am not sure if he feels the need to be mad at me over that but its whatever. Yeah, I would fight that guy again.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): I just got my hands on a copy of your new book, "Got Fight?" Did you enjoy the process of writing your book or was it a pain in the ass?

Forrest Griffin: You really have a copy of it? Wow, so they turned that into a real book. I thought they were pulling the plug on it. I actually had a lot of fun getting the book done; it was awesome. All I had to do was call the guy up and scream about how much I hate stuff and I guess he recorded it and now it's a book.

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): My first UFC PPV was UFC 12, watching Randy Couture take it to a young Vitor Belfort — and he’s been one of my MMA idols every since. Is he as cool as I think he is? And what is it like training with him at Xtreme Couture?

Forrest Griffin: That was the fist UFC I ever saw too. Actually it wasn't the first UFC I saw, but it was the one that made me think it was an awesome sport. I was like 'Oh my god, I want to be a part of this.' When I was in the police academy one of my instructors gave me that DVD. I watched it and said, 'Once they drop the tight shorts I am going to do that.'

Randy really is that cool, he really is. That is why so many people have looked up to him and gravitated toward him. Randy Couture is the kind of guy that if you share a hotel room with him, and he’s got an early flight, instead of turning the light on he will use the light from his cell phone to try and pack his stuff so he doesn't wake you. That’s the real Randy Couture, isn't that awesome?

Brian Oswald (MMAmania.com): It sure is. It's been great talking to you Forrest. I appreciate your candor.

Forrest Griffin: I appreciate it and I hope I wasn't helpful at all.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9: Episode 5 recap and discussion

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 07:00 PM PDT

Episode five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 gets underway with a brief recap of Nick Osipczak’s surprising knockout win over Mark Miller. Bisping reminds us that it was Team US who picked the fight and had it blow up in their face.

A long van ride back for the stateside boys as they try to figure out why the opposing team is so cohesive and they are a Motley crew. Cameron Dollar declares his independence from the group and Damarques concedes that their team is anything but.

Dollar then decides to prove how cool he is by telling some of the guys by the pool that he’s humped over 70 girls. When they react with a sense of apathy, he raises the stakes by admitting that one of the lucky 70 was his best friend’s bride-to-be.

So much for “Bro’s before Ho’s.”

Team US keeps with the tired mantra “I’m not here to make friends, I’m just here to win fights.” You know, because it’s always worked so well in the past.

Fight selection and Team UK is in control picking Andre Winner to face Santino DeFranco. Bisping is confident that Winner won’t be outstruck or taken down. Hendo disagrees.

Winner rolls around with Bisping to prep for the fight and the team erupts when he is able to secure a takedown on “The Count.” Bisping blames it on his own coaching that made Winner good enough to pull it off.

Training session for the Brits and Winner likes to get paid to fight as well as feed his competitive spirit. DeFranco refreshes our memory about his TUF 2 tryout that resulted in brain surgery and the end of mixed martial arts. He defied the odds to come back and had a thrilling come-from-behind win in episode two.

Fight day is here and DeFranco tries to convince himself he’s going to win by screaming “I’m the champ!” ad nauseam. Winner finds the idea of losing to be kind of amusing.

Lightweight elimination fight #1: Andre Winner (9-2-1) vs. Santino DeFranco (13-4)

Round 1: Low kick by DeFranco. Body shot by Winner. DeFranco shoots and gets denied. An exchange of low kicks. Again. Sloppy shoot by DeFranco rejected. Winner with a punch-kick combo. Low kick by Winner. Returned by DeFranco. Nice body shot by Winner. DeFranco shoots and Winner flops on top and gets mount. DeFranco tries to do his best BJ Penn impersonation by working an Omplata. He can’t secure it and Winner breaks free and starts to unload bombs onto a fetal DeFranco. This continues with no defense and Mazz jumps in for the stoppage.

Andre Winner defeats Santino DeFranco via TKO (strikes)

After the fight, Hendo looks for some consoling words and finds none. DeFranco calls himself an idiot. Winner and Team UK celebrate like they just won two straight from a baffled Team US, probably because they did.

Back at the house Team US starts to unravel and we even get a gratuitous Kriss-Kross wiggity-whack reference from Jason Dent. 10 out of 10 for that one.

Hendo takes his team for a run and starts fantasy matchmaking - until Jason Pierce decides he can’t beat anybody on Team UK. They pile into the van and start bickering like a bunch of insecure sixth graders. As an American rooting for his homeland, it’s a sad sight to see.

Hendo comes in for the save with a Rah-Rah speech that is delivered in the same monotone delivery he says everything else in. It doesn’t resonate but at least it shuts them up for a few minutes.

The Brits attribute their bond to a complete lack of egos. They are shown having fun, getting along, basically all the things that Team US can’t seem to get a handle on.

We get our second fight announcement of the episode and Hendo chooses Damarques Johnson to try and stop the bleeding by taking on Dean Amasinger. Bisping warns that this fight is hardly a lock for Team US.

Dean is reminded to be weary of the triangle choke, which Johnson uses and Dean is susceptible to. Dean is all smiles during training and even hits a Hulkamaniac pose for his fans overseas.

Johnson on the other hand seems content to just bounce around the cage by himself. He assures the viewers he’s not there to rape and pillage anyone and then prays for God to give him the strength to whoop some ass.

Dean has his back shaved before the fight. Those Brits, they’re so polite. Bisping is inexplicably absent from the locker room as he gets ready and it puts a damper on Dean’s fighting spirit. Dean seems way too kind and gentle to be a fighter.

Welterweight elimination fight #2: Damarques Johnson (13-6) vs. Dean Amasinger (4-1)

Round 1: Hard low kick by Amasinger. Then another but Johnson catches it and Amasinger slips. They get back up and Amasinger shoots and gets him down but Johnson takes an arm with him. Amasinger escapes the kimura and takes mount. Unfortunately he also takes a walk down Triangle lane and gets tapped for his efforts.

Damarques Johnson defeats Dean Amasinger vis submission (triangle choke)

Following the fight, Team US figures Bisping was MIA because he knew his fighter would lose and that he was avoiding the inevitable. Amasinger has a meltdown in the locker room and even I started to get aggravated that Bisping was a no-show.

Stay tuned next week as Bisping tries to atone for his absence, Team US grows further apart and we’re treated to another two-fight episode!

See you in seven!

Demian Maia vs Nate Marquardt UFC 102 fight set for Aug. 29

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 05:38 PM PDT

Middleweight standouts, Nate Marquardt (28-8-2) and Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia (10-0), are set to collide at UFC 102 from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, on August 29, according to Maia's official site.

Marquardt is coming off a big win over Wilson Gouveia (12-5) at UFC 95, finishing the bout in the third round via technical knockout with a thrilling combination that looked like it had been lifted from a video game.

It was impressive to say the least.

Before that he demolished Martin Kampmann, beating him at his own game (the stand up) and forcing the Dane to rethink his career at 185 pounds and make the drop to welterweight.

Maia has been impressive in his own right as of late, too.

He has remained undefeated throughout his professional mixed martial arts career, winning five straight bouts inside the Octagon and earning four “submission of the night” bonuses during that span. His list of victims includes submission victories over the likes of Chael Sonnen (21-10-1), Nate Quarry (11-3) and Jason McDonald (21-12), among others.

It’s safe to say Marquardt will do best to avoid going to the ground if possible against Maia.

With a win here both fighters would have a good case to argue for a title shot against 185-pound kingpin Anderson Silva (24-4). However, they may have to get in line and wait behind the winner of Dan Henderson (24-7) vs. Michal Bisping (18-1) — the two coaches from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) are set to square off at UFC 100 on July 11.

UFC 102 is expected to feature a main event between Randy "The Natural" Couture locking horns with Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira in a dream match-up that most fans expected to see before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Also slated for the main card is perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine (14-5-1) who has been tapped to replace Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound slugfest against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1).

UFC 102 is beginning to shape up quite nicely … and we're still four months away. To check out the latest UFC 102 fight card and rumors click here.

UFC Quick Quote: Rashad Evans will bother Lyoto Machida on May 23

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 12:06 PM PDT

"Probably after my fight with Tito Ortiz. After that fight I really believed I could make it. That was when I thought: ‘These guys aren't that much better than me. I can fight these guys, and I can beat these guys.’ [Lyoto is] a very strategic fighter, just as I am. It will surely be a tough fight. I think if we fight, the winner will be the one with the better strategy. Machida is a really tough and disciplined fighter. He doesn't get emotionally shaken in his fights, for being so disciplined. When this fight happens, I'm go to make him frustrated and bothered in the octagon. It will be a tough fight, for sure."

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans talks to GracieMag.com about the chess match against challenger Lyoto Machida at UFC 98 when the two put their undefeated records on the line from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23. Will “Sugar” somehow find a way to solve the enigma that is Lyoto Machida? Or will “The Dragon” — who is currently the favorite among sportsbooks — flambe the hard-hitting TUF grad? We’ll know in less than a month…

M-1 Global: Team USA shuts out Team Korea while Fedor Emelianenko overpowers Shinya Aoki

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 11:03 AM PDT

Tokyo, Japan — After going winless in last year, Team USA West is now just one win away from clinching a post-season berth in the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction.”

The Colin Oyama-coached team took sole possession of first place following Wednesday night’s 5-0 shutout over South Korea during M-1 Challenge’s “Third Edition,” which emanated from Differ Ariake.

Lightweight David Jansen improved to 10-0 after utilizing his outstanding wrestling ability to grind out a unanimous decision victory over Nam Yui Chul (8-2), an impressive prospect who had been 8-1 coming into the fight.

The win marked Jansen’s second consecutive M-1 Challenge victory following his unanimous decision victory over Brazil’s Flavio Alvaro during the ‘09 opener on Feb. 21, 2009. In a field of 16 lightweight competitors involved with this year’s M-1 Challenge, Jansen is well on his way towards establishing himself as the competition’s top 155 pound fighter.

Jansen’s fight vs. Chul marked his first time competing in Japan, however, Jansen expressed his desire to return and has issued a public challenge to DEEP lightweight champion Katsunori Kikuno.

USA West then moved out to a 2-0 lead following Fabio Negao’s (9-4) majority decision victory over the talented Myung Ho Bae (7-4). The fight was Negao’s first bout since a unanimous decision loss to Matt Lindland at Affliction’s “Banned” event last July.

Next it was time for the middleweights, with Giva “The Arm Collector” Santana (12-1) clinching the team victory for USA West following a armbar submission win over Min Suk Heo (4-8) at 4:05 of round 1. In an incredible statistic, Santana now has 11 career wins via tapout with all of them having come via armbar.

Despite having clinched the team win, Team USA still needed to rack up additional individual victories due to the fact that it competes in a deep Group B division that includes South Korea, Brazil, and the defending M-1 Challenge champions Imperial Team.

All eyes were on Jae Young Kim (12-7) in his return to the M-1 Challenge following his stunning upset over Imperial’s Mikhail Zayats during the Feb. opener courtesy of a head kick. However, former IFL veteran and submission wrestling champion Raphael Davis (6-1) continued his evolution as a striker following a second round TKO over Kim.

Last for Team USA West was heavyweight Shane Del Rosario, who entered the ring wearing his WBC Muay Thai championship belt. The blue chip prospect also entered the contest with a perfect 5-0 record at stake but Del Rosario improved to 6-0 following a first round knockout over Doo Hee Lee (11-7).

The 5-0 shutout improved Team USA West’s record to 2-0 with a combined individual record of 8-2. The team can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Team Imperial in its next matchup, with a date between the two juggernauts yet to be determined.

In addition to Team USA West’s win over South Korea, the debuting Team England could possibly be the team to beat in Group A following its victory over host country Japan during the night’s main team challenge.

The confident Ian “M-16″ Butlin (6-8) ruffled several feathers during a Tuesday press conference in which the anointed England team leader informed the Japanese media that he and his teammates would shut out the Japanese by a 5-0 score.

Despite the bold proclamation, Butlin wasn’t too far off the mark, as England dominated Japan by a 4-1 score. In a twist of irony, it was Butlin’s first round loss to Luiz Andrada (9-6-3) that prevented the team from recording the shutout.

After promising a knockout win all week, Butlin was unable to implement his game plan as Andrada elected not to engage him in the standup and instead tapped him an armbar at 3:20 of round 1.

England then stole Japan’s momentum after Simon “The Executioner” Phillips (7-2) displayed his professional boxing skills and put the entire M-1 welterweight division on notice following his crushing 20 second knockout over DEEP and Pancrase veteran Hidehiko Hasegawa (16-12-5).

Japan then appeared to be well on its way to regaining the lead with Yusuke Masuda forcing Matt Thorpe to fight on his heels for virtually the entire first round. Despite losing the first frame, Thorpe displayed one of the basic principles of jiu-jitsu as a self defense technique by overcoming a more aggressive Masuda with a rear naked choke at 1:30 of round 2.

Following his teammate’s lead, Tom Blackledge (8-6) also used a rear naked choke to clinch a team victory for England after submitting Tatsuya Mizuno (5-5). However, Blackledge differentiated his win from Thorpe’s by showing shades of Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg and utilizing a standing choke en route to victory.

In addition to having his teammates support him at ringside, Blackledge was also cornered by former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Jackson, a well-known figure in Japan thanks to his successful tenure in PRIDE, returned to the country in order to support Blackledge, his good friend and training partner at the Wolfslair Academy in London.

Looking to fortify its standing as the early leader of Group A, British heavyweight Rob “Godzilla” Broughton (9-4-1) displayed excellent ground skills for a big man during his unanimous decision victory over Yusuke Kawaguchi.

For Broughton, the win over Kawaguchi marked yet another notch on his belt when it comes to defeating rising heavyweight prospects. In addition to holding a win over British up-and-comer Martin Thompson, Broughton now can boast that he was the first man to inflict a loss onto Kawaguchi’s record, who previously had been 8-0.

While Team England’s next fight has yet to be finalized, officials with M-1 Global and Cage Warriors are currently working towards bringing a 2009 M-1 Challenge event to England.

The 19-bout M-1 Challenge Japan event also featured a superfight between Karl “Psycho” Amoussou and IFL veteran Kazuhiro Hamanaka, an M-1 Challenge Group A team matchup between France vs. Spain, and a special sparring exhibition between WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and WAMMA lightweight champion Shinya Aoki.

While Amoussou’s countrymen suffered a 3-2 defeat to Spain, he lifted his former teammates’ spirits with a brilliant flying knee knockout victory over Hamanaka just 23 seconds into their fight with the capacity crowd rising to their feet.

The Japanese crowd displayed even more emotion during Fedor and Aoki’s public sparring session, which was advertised locally as a “special super exhibition.” With no scoring in effect, the encounter between the two undisputed world champions resembled a training session that you might see inside of a fight gym. The only difference was that nearly 1,000 spectators were on hand to watch the two square off while donning Gis.

Fedor utilized his strength advantage to send Aoki soaring with several Sambo throws. At one point, Aoki played to the crowd and removed his Gi in jest and attempted a flying armbar on Fedor. With both fighters pressing each other well less than 100 percent, the two smiled for much of the session and embraced after the final bell had sounded. The video of the session will air free of charge on a video-on-demand basis starting on Monday, May 4 at www.M-1Global.com and www.Mixfight.ru.

Below are complete results from Wednesday’s “M-1 Challenge” event.

UFC Quick Quote: Houston Alexander feels pressure to win for himself, not keep his job, at UFC 98

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 07:54 AM PDT

houston alexander

“Of course I wasn’t nervous [about losing my job after the loss to Eric Schafer in Sept. 2008]. I wasn’t nervous at all. Number one, I have been in the business for 10 years and second, it’s great to be in the UFC, man, but it’s not going to make or break me. The UFC is a great event to be a part of, but as far as me being a man, it’s not going to make or break me … of course, there is pressure to win your upcoming fight. First of all, I hate losing. We have to make sure that the mechanics, the training and all that stuff coincides together. So, you know, of course I want to win. So, there is some pressure on this next fight because I, personally, want to win. Other than that, that’s it.”

– Light heavyweight Houston Alexander talks to MMA Fanhouse about nerves, job security, single parenthood and more as he prepares to take on Andre Gusmao at UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23. The "Nebraskan Assassin" has suffered three straight defeats inside the Octagon since bursting onto the scene with big back-to-back knockouts over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara back in 2007. UFC President Dana White appears to be giving the charismatic father of six at least once more chance to prove he belongs with the top mixed martial arts promotion in the world. Can he can make the most out of it or is he better suited for the DJ booth?

UFC 102: Keith Jardine to replace Forrest Griffin against Thiago Silva on August 29

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 06:50 AM PDT

Perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine (14-5-1) has been tapped to replace Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound slugfest against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1) at UFC 102 from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, on August 29, MMAmania.com has learned.

Griffin and Silva were originally set to hook ‘em up at UFC 101 in Philadelphia on August 8 — until the bat phone rang in Joe Silva’s office and demanded that Anderson Silva redeem himself for consecutive stand-and-bland performances at UFC 90 and 97.

Thiago was temporarily left without a date for the prom, but the UFC made good on their swap by pitting him against the “Dean of Mean,” as well as a few extra weeks to prepare for his new foe.

Despite dropping a close unanimous decision to former light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson at UFC 96, the Greg Jackson-disciple has done his share to be atop the 205-pound ladder, putting together a solid record of (6-4) during his time in the Octagon. His resume is highlighted with wins over some of the top names in the sport such as Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Brandon Vera and others.

His next appearance at UFC 102 will continue his (mis?)fortune of drawing dangerous opponents.

Silva has made a habit of demolishing his challengers. Before getting stopped at UFC 94 "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ by uber-enigma Lyoto Machida on January 31, Silva had finished 12 of his 13 fights, including 10 (T)KO's.

Scary stuff.

Silva brings the fierce Chute Boxe aggression into his fights (even though he is now no longer with the camp). He has an explosive mix of punches and kicks, which can often leave him open to counter strikes.

However, Silva has proven that he can take punishment and dish out more … just ask Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes.

UFC 102 is expected to feature a main event between Randy "The Natural" Couture as he locks horns with Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira in a dream match-up that most fans expected to see at UFC 98 on May 23 before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Marital problems force Kim Couture to withdraw from May 15 Strikeforce event (Updated)

Kim Couture (1-1) — the wife of former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture — has withdrawn from her fight against Meisha Tate (5-1) during the inaugural edition of the SHO MMA: "Strikeforce Challenger Series" at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on May 15.

Tate recently posted an update to her MySpace page that cites marital problems as the reason for Couture’s withdrawal.

Here’s a snip:

“So Kim ‘Sugar Free’ Couture is pulling out of the fight supposedly cuz her and Randy are getting a divorce………..I’m so pissed right now……Sugar Free my ass!!”

Couture was making her second appearance under the Strikeforce banner. The 33-year-old Las Vegas resident recently won for the first time in her professional career, scoring a first round technical knockout stoppage over Lina Kvokov at Strikeforce: "Destruction" in November 2008.

She dropped her pro debut in a gritty, hard fought unanimous decision loss to Kim Rose at a Banner Promotions event last June — a fight in which she suffered a severely broken jaw during the first minute and continued to fight on for the full nine minutes.

While nothing has been made official, there has been some talk behind the scenes that Mrs. Couture’s involvement in Randy’s business affairs may have isolated him from his peers — and that “The Natural” may have drawn a line in the sand regarding her role in his personal and professional life.

***UPDATE: Tate has begun damage control via a post on The Underground following the heat she took for her MySpace post and “forgetting” that the Coutures were famous. See below.

“So I missunderstood about what I had previously stated, I have a few friends that train at Extreme Couture one of which told me Randy and Kim were having issues and then she backed out of the fight on me and I was VERY upset because most of you know this fight meant the world to me, it was my big break and I was really upset when I found out and jumped to conclusions. My apologies to Randy and Kim, When I wrote about them I meant no ill intentions and didn’t mean to blast their personal life, I was just focused on the fact I wasn’t going to get the fight. I forget how famous they are and didn’t even think how that might effect them and their personal life which was immature and stress my apology to them and who ever else it may concern.”

UFC 101 announced for Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on August 8

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 05:37 PM PDT

We passed along the good news more than a month ago that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) had designs on staging its first-ever event in Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 8, 2009. Today, the promotion made those plans official, announcing that it would storm the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia with UFC 101.

And fans in the “City of Brotherly Love” have to be pleased with the pay-per-view (PPV)-worthy show that is expected to roll into town in little more than three months.

It’s now confirmed that lightweight champion BJ Penn will put his 155-pound title on the line against number one contender Kenny Florian in the main event of the evening. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will also be in action, stepping up once again to compete at light heavyweight against former 205-pound champion, Forrest Griffin, in a three-round, non-title special attraction.

Other proposed match ups, which we have been sharing as we have learned about them, are also in the works. To check out the latest UFC 101 fight card and rumors click here.

UFC 101 tickets are not yet on sale, but the promotion promises to release that information shortly. Therefore, if you’re interested in attending it would be wise to check in with us early and often to ensure that you don’t miss the boat — tickets will more than likely move lightning fast.

Sean Sherk not overlooking Frank Edgar at UFC 98 en route to another title shot

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 04:15 PM PDT

Props: MMA Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

He’s got a pretty good name. He’s done real well in the UFC; I’ve seen him in the top 10 before. I think it’s another step closer to a title shot, which is my main goal … I’m not looking for an easy title shot. I know Kenny’s not easy but if Kenny wins, I don’t want a shot just because I already beat Kenny. Give me BJ again, man. BJ beat me and for me that’s motivation, especially with everything before that lead into that fight with all the drama and stuff like that … I just want the best fighter to win [at UFC 101], and hopefully if I do my job on May 23, hopefully I can be next in line for a title shot … I mean Frankie is really tough; I never overlook anybody. I never have in my entire career and I’m not going to start now … as soon as you start overlooking guys, that’s when you run into a problem and I’m not going to do that.

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk talks about getting another crack at the 155-pound strap he coughed up following a controversial drug test that pegged him as a steroid user. “The Muscle Shark” also anticipates a very stiff test at UFC 98 “Evans vs. Machida” in the form of lightweight standout Frank Edgar. A win could put him in line for a title shot against either BJ Penn or Kenny Florian following their championship bout at UFC 101 in August. Either way, it’s a rematch for Sherk. The question is, who would you rather see — Sherk vs. “The Prodigy” or Sherk vs. “KenFlo?”

PFC 13: ‘Validation’ set with four championship bouts on May 8

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 03:44 PM PDT

Palace Fighting Championships (PFC) 13: “Validation” is all set to go down at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California on Friday, May 8.

In all, four PFC world championship belts will be decided on the card, as well as a number one contender eliminator bout in the featherweight division and a featured main event middleweight showdown between former WEC light heavyweight champion Doug “The Rhino” Marshall and three time ShoXC veteran Jaime “El Cucui” Jara.

Marshall comes in riding a two fight winning streak, having taken five out of his last six. The two most recent wins both came under the PFC banner, against Phil Collins (TKO) at PFC 9 last July and against Rafael Real (TKO) at PFC 11 in November.

Jara has also won five of his last six fights, including three by submission and another by technical knockout. He dropped a unanimous decision to Leopoldo Serao during his last showing for PFC at “All In” back in November.

This is a classic clash of styles as Jara will lean on his submission skills, while The Rhino looks to turn it into a kickboxing match.

The PFC flyweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight titles will all be on the line in Lemoore on May 8 as well, not to mention a lightweight undercard match up involving “The Ultimate Fighter” season 5 washout Gabe Ruediger.

Check out the full lineup for PFC 13: “Validation” below:

Main Event:
Doug “The Rhino” Marshall (9-3) vs. Jaime “El Cucui” Jara (21-6)

Main Card:
145 lbs.: Casey Olson (9-2) vs. Eddie Yagin (12-3-1)
185 lbs.: Leopoldo Serao (15-7) vs. Phil Collins (7-4) for the vacant PFC Middleweight Title
170 lbs.: PFC Welterweight Champion Olaf Alfonso (8-10) vs. Kyle Pimentel (6-0)
155 lbs.: Dominique Robinson (14-2-1) vs. Carlo Prater (23-6-1) for the vacant PFC Lightweight Title
125 lbs.: Anthony Perales (3-0) vs. Pat Runez (5-0) for the vacant PFC Flyweight Title

Under Card:
155 lbs.: Darren Crisp (6-3) vs. Gabe Ruediger (11-5)
155 lbs.: Bryan Travers (11-1) vs. John Gunderson (18-6)
155 lbs.: Marcelo Guidici (8-1) vs. John Reedy (6-3)
155 lbs.: Scott McAfee (7-1) vs. Bill Theofonopolus (3-1)
135 lbs.: Cole Escovedo (11-4) vs. Michael McDonald (7-0)
130 lbs.: Erin Toughill (9-2-1) vs. Emily Thompson (4-0)

It should be a solid night of fights for the California based organization. Tickets are on sale now and can be had through the usual outlets.

Anderson Silva (not Thiago) vs Forrest Griffin booked for UFC 101

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 11:28 AM PDT

Fresh off back-to-back underwhelming — albeit winning performances — UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will return to the 205-pound division in search of better competition against former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 8, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.

Griffin was previously booked to take on Thiago Silva in the co main event; however, UFC President Dana White made an executive decision to insert the “Spider” instead.

Here’s his reasoning:

"Forrest loved the idea and said he'd do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is. So we got the deal…. I talked to (a reporter) the day after (UFC 97) and that's when I started working on this. At the end of the day, it's my job to put on the kinds of fights that you in the media will like and that the fans will want to see. Silva and Griffin is the kind of fight that even other fighters are going to go crazy for. That's what I do for a living. I as a fan didn't like what I saw (at UFC 97) and I wasn't kidding when I said I wanted to walk out of the building because of how embarrassed I am. But I can tell you this: I'm going to be counting the days until this fight."

Griffin — the light heavyweight winner of the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) until June 27, 2009, because of a broken left hand that he suffered in the second round of his fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 92 "The Ultimate 2008″ last December.

He apparently needed to have pins surgically inserted into the hand to expedite the healing process. The good news is that he has already been cleared to resume punching and training full-time to be prepared for a healthy return in August.

The bad news? He now has to do it against the feared Brazilian striker who more than likely won’t be in a good mood when he steps inside the Octagon on fight night.

Indeed, Silva will likely feel the need to prove himself worthy of being considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world when he arrives in the “City of Brotherly Love.” Apparently, a record-setting nine straight UFC wins — seven of which were all stoppages that never went longer than two rounds — is not good enough these days.

That’s because Silva has baffled his fans, as well as White, in his two most recent outings. He earned a bizarre third round technical knockout win over Patrick Cote after the Canadian’s knee imploded and then followed that up with a boring unanimous decision win over Thales Leites at UFC 97: “Redemption” earlier this month.

Joe Stevenson to train with Greg Jackson and Co. for critical Nate Diaz TUF 9 Finale fight

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 08:47 AM PDT

"There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction"

Former number one lightweight contender Joe Stevenson is taking a page out of Winston Churchill's book of wisdom, deciding to travel about 700 miles from his home in Victorville, Calif., to Albuquerque, N.M., to prepare with Team Jackson for his upcoming lightweight fight against Nate Diaz at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale on June 20.

"Daddy" is mired in a rare slump, losing back-to-back bouts and three of his last four. However, those three losses have come to UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn, the division's current number one contender Kenny "KenFlo" Florian and, most recently, the new-look Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez.

That's some stiff competition.

Nonetheless, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 welterweight winner understands that consistently taking on the best the division has to offer is not going to cut it unless he can start adding "W's" to his win column, which is the reason behind the temporary change of scenery.

Indeed, Stevenson is still very involved with his Cobra Kai gym in Victorville and there is no strain on his relationship with his head trainer there, Irvin Bounds. This move is all about mixing it up, getting new looks with new training partners to ensure that he leaves no stone unturned heading into his showdown with Diaz.

Losing, at this point, is simply no longer an option for the 25-year-old father of four (not that it ever really was). In short, he is prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that no longer happens … even if it means being away from his family and normal day-to-day routine.

And the "direction" that he chose couldn't be more right.

The newly-minted Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will put his skills to the test against Greg Jackson's dynamic roster of successful mixed martial artists, which includes some of the very best athletes in the business, including UFC champions Rashad Evans and Georges St. Pierre, as well as top contenders such as Nate Marquardt, Keith Jardine and Donald Cerrone (WEC).

Athletes is the operative word here: Stevenson needs to work on improving all areas of his game — not just his effective ground attack that has gotten him this far — if he intends to remain a legitimate contender and possible champion in the future.

And if there is anyone who can squeeze every ounce of skill out of Stevenson, as well as help him reach his true potential, it is Jackson — widely considered the best trainer/gameplanner in the sport — and his All Star crew.

Change, in this case, doesn't get much better.

Weigh-in results official for M-1 Challenge Tokyo edition on April 29

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 06:40 AM PDT

Tokyo, Japan — A literal parade of 38 fighters made their way through official weigh-ins on Tuesday at the Pearl Kasai Hotel in Tokyo in preparations for Wednesday’s “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” event scheduled to emanate from Differ Ariake.

A total of 19 fights are planned with a scheduled local start time in Tokyo of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday’s lineup includes two preliminary fights, a Superfight between rising French phenom Karl Amoussou and IFL veteran Kazuhiro Hamanaka, M-1 Challenge team matchups featuring France vs. Spain, USA West vs. South Korea, Japan vs. England, and a special grappling exhibition between WAMMA lightweight champion Shinya Aoki and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.

While much of the local media in Japan is fixated on Fedor’s return to the “Land of the Rising Sun,” there is a tremendous amount of intrigue regarding Team USA West’s best-of-five series vs. South Korea. Both teams are one-and-two in the standings in Group B, with South Korea holding a slim one fight lead over the USA West team. Team USA West will not only have a chance to close the gap but also take a resounding leading in the division.

Despite defeating Team Brazil Naja by a score of 3-2 during the 2009 M-1 Challenge opener in Tacoma, Wash. in February, Team USA West has changed three of its five members. Joining returnees David Jansen (lightweight) and Raphael Davis (light heavyweight) are welterweight Fabio Negao, middleweight Giva Santana, and heavyweight Shane Del Rosario.

According to head coach Colin Oyama, the changes to the roster were not performance-related, as Negao, Santana, and Del Rosario had all initially been planned to compete in the opener but were unavailable for various reasons.

“The changes had nothing to do with the guys that we had,” Oyama began to respond when asked about his team’s roster makeover. “This was the original team we had planned on. Shane Del Rosario had an injury and we had to bring in a replacement. Negao had also competed at middleweight and needed additional time to get down to 170. Giva also had other obligations. So the five you will see in this event are the original five guys we intended to start with.”

Del Rosario is a former WBO Muay Thai champion who is 5-0 in MMA. A veteran of EliteXC’s ShoXC series, he will look to improve to 6-0 when he faces South Korea’s Doo Hee Lee. For Rosario, he considers it an honor to represent his home country on foreign land.

“I’m flattered to be able to represent my country,” said Del Rosario. “Last year we were winless and coming into this year a lot of teams thought they were going to walk all over us. We proved them wrong after winning our first fight and I see us being in St. Petersburg (Russia) in the championship final.”

Del Rosario is not the only member of Team USA West who will have a perfect record on the line vs. South Korea. Team Quest’s Jansen improved to 9-0 with his stunning win over Rio Heroes veteran Flavio Alvaro during the ‘09 opener. Set to face Yui Chul Nam, Jansen was candid in admitting that he is feeling some pressure in trying to retain his perfect record.

“There is some pressure. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t,” he remarked.

But pressure doesn’t appear to be too big of an issue for Jansen, as he is already making plans for his next fight. Wednesday will mark his first time competing in Japan, but he would like to return again and challenge DEEP lightweight champion Katsunori Kikuno.

“I don’t speak a whole lot of Japanese but I do know how to say one phrase: Kikuno itai meni kaketekoi, which basically means 'Kikuno, if you want to feel pain, bring it on!’”

First, Jansen must get past Nam in order to have a chance at garnering a shot at Kikuno. The Matt Lindland-trained Jansen doesn’t seem too concerned about the challenge that lies ahead.

“I’m looking forward to this fight. He’s a big striker but he telegraphs his strikes and comes out very aggressive. I think that’s going to play into my takedown game. He’s going to throw looping punches but look for me to throw straight punches. I’m going to take him down and clobber him. It’s clobbering time!”

Even more confident than Jansen is all of Team England, which will be making its M-1 Challenge debut against host country Japan. In fact, lightweight Ian Butlin promised during the pre-fight press conference held at the 21 East Hotel earlier in the day that the Brits will defeat the Japanese 5-0.

Bold remarks are nothing new for Butlin, who has proclaimed himself the best lightweight fighter in all of England.

“I don’t call myself the best lightweight fighter in England - I am the best lightweight in England,” Butlin stated without hesitation. “All the guys that say they’re the best, stand up and fight me! Just don’t talk about it! Get in there and do it! I’m sick of fighters pulling out that are supposed to fight me. I’m the best lightweight in the U.K. - that’s right! Because I’m not just looking to submit you, I’m looking to knock you the [expletive] out!”

Butlin will have to back his proclamation of being England’s top lightweight on Japanese soil when he takes on Luiz Andrada, a long-time veteran of DEEP with notable wins over Shinobu Miura, Yusuke Suzuki, and Kosuto Umeda, along with a draw against current DEEP lightweight champ Kikuno.

Against Andrada, Butlin is hoping to wow the crowd with a brawl for the ages.

“A lot of people say they want to fight a striker like me and then they try to take it to the ground,” he said. “These grapplers think they can [expletive] tap me but they’re the ones that [expletive] tap like a little girl when I punch them in the [expletive] head!”

Opening the event will be a Group A battle between Team France, led by blue chip light heavyweight prospect Christian Mpumbu, and Team Spain, which boasts heavyweight Rogent Lloret as its top gun.

The live stream of the event will be available for non-U.S. residents at www.Mixfight.ru with full coverage for U.S. fans at www.M-1Global.com. The Fedor vs. Aoki exhibition will not be available during the live stream of the event and will instead premiere on a video-on-demand basis on Monday, May 4 at both www.Mixfight.ru and www.M-1Global.com.

The ’sources close’ to Anderson Silva apparently never told him …

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 06:30 AM PDT

… that he would help prepare former two-time foe, Rich Franklin, for his upcoming fight against his old Chute Boxe training partner, Wanderlei Silva, at UFC 99: “The Comeback” on June 13, according to Tatame.com:

"He didn't said any word to me about it, but he's gonna face a Brazilian, so it's hard that something will happen. I don't have anything against Franklin either Wanderlei, both are great fighters. In other situation, I'd train with him, for sure. My gym is open for everyone. Whoever goes there can have classes and I won't have any problems if he decides to go there, that's the sports' globalization.”

That was fast. It’s not an outright denial, but his way of answering the question is interesting. Either the “Spider” is playing dumb to try and distance himself from training an American for a fight against a popular Brazilian fighter, performing damage control so his feud with the “Axe Murder” doesn’t hit Defcon 1 or there really are no concrete plans for “Ace” to enlist his services. The plot thickens … you decide.

UFC Quick Quote: Michael Bisping unimpressed with Dan Henderson and his many critics

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 05:54 AM PDT

"I'll prove you wrong at UFC 100 … people always say I'm going to lose my fights — people always call me the underdog. Maybe one day people will actually predict me to win. I actually like the role of underdog, it's nice proving people wrong, and I WILL be proving 'certain journalists' wrong at UFC 100… To be honest, maybe I'm underestimating him but I don't think I've got a lot to worry about. He's got a big right hand and great clinch work, but outside of that I've got him beat. Having watched the Henderson/Franklin fight again, I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. His striking looked sloppy, he fell on his arse a couple of times from kicks, landed a couple of big right hands but that was it really…. He's never been knocked out in his career, it'd be nice to be the first, I'm definitely looking to finish the fight. I've been improving my explosive strength, you'll definitely see the best Michael Bisping at UFC 100 and I'm going there to knock him out."

– The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 light heavyweight winner and current coach of season nine, Michael Bisping, rails on his critics in a recent Setanta.com interview. “The Count” appears to be growing increasingly agitated with those who feel he is overmatched in his upcoming middleweight fight against Dan Henderson at UFC 100: “Lesnar vs. Mir 2″ on July 11, saying that the majority of folks outside the Octagon rarely give him a fair shake on fight night. For the most part he has proven them wrong every time out with the exception of a split decision loss to Rashad Evans back at UFC 78. Can he do it again at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, against the former dual Pride FC champion?

Report: Alistair Overeem vs Brett Rogers Strikeforce title fight possible for June 6

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 02:17 AM PDT

Strikeforce MMA has perhaps found an opponent for its heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem (29-11), according to Sports1140.com, setting up the Dutchman to take on undefeated former Elite XC standout, Brett Rogers (9-0), in a featured match on the promotion’s “Lawler vs. Shields” card, which is set for the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., on June 6.

It’s important to note that company officials could not confirm the showdown between the two feared strikers at press time; however, it was also not ruled out entirely, meaning it could (or could not) be announced shortly.

“The Demolition Man” captured the Strikeforce belt with a second round submission win over Paul Buentello back in 2007 after repeated knees to the body forced “The Headhunter” to tap out. However, Overeem has yet to defend his title since that time, fighting primarily over in Japan for the past two years.

Most recently, Overeem has been dabbling in K-1 kickboxing events and doing quite well against some of the best in the business. His most recent mixed martial arts action was against 43-year old accomplished kickboxer and UFC veteran, Gary Goodridge, at a Glory MMA show in front of his own countrymen in  Arnhem, Netherlands, last November. Overeem won that bout via first round submission (kimura).

A little over a month prior to that, he was possibly getting the best of former Pride FC open weight grand prix winner Mirko Cro Cop in a heavyweight tilt on the DREAM 6 card before the bout had to be stopped and ruled a no contest because of repeated unintentional (albeit illegal) groin strikes from Overeem.

“The Grim” will be taking a serious step up in competition level for this fight. Overeem is more experienced and more accomplished than any of the nine men who have stepped in the cage with Rogers throughout his career thus far.

The Minneapolis Team Bison product has stormed through those nine men rather easily, too, finishing each of them with strikes. In fact, only once, in his most recent victory over Ron “Abongo” Humphrey on the Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” card earlier this month, has the knockout artist faced an opponent who has survived beyond the first round.

It’ll be a short turnaround for Rogers — less than two months to be exact — but he went nearly a full year without competing following his win over Jon Murphy under the Elite XC banner last May. He’s more than likely hungry to get as many fights under his belt as he can in 2009.

At 260 pounds, Grim should have a decent size advantage over the champion in this fight. Both fighters measure in at 6′5,” but Overeem — who used to compete as a light heavyweight — will probably be about 30 pounds lighter than the challenger on fight night. That’s something Rogers will undoubtedly look to use to his advantage.

Here’s a snip from an interview he did with MMAFighting.com about the match up:

“With Overeem, with him I think it would be a little more exciting because he wants to stand with me. He's kind of a fast spunky kind of dude, that's what I've been seeing off of his videos. He's a dangerous fighter on the ground (in that) he can fight off of his back, too, so I ain't gonna sleep on him when it comes to that. But he's definitely going to have some problems with the weight. He's gotta pump it up a little bit or I'll lay on his ass, put that weight on him, tire him out.”

The event will be headlined by a match-up of the last reigning Elite XC middleweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and the only man to ever hold the Elite XC welterweight title, Jake Shields. In addition, a special 180-pound catchweight fight between Nick Diaz and Scott Smith was also just recently announced.

Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields” will air live on the premium cable network Showtime on fight night, beginning at 10 p.m. ET. Stay dialed in to MMAmania.com before, during and after the show for all the Strikeforce event coverage you can handle.

‘Minatauro’ Nogueira healthy and ready for Randy Couture at UFC 102

Quoteworthy:

"I wasn't getting to take the fight to the floor. I had an injury two weeks before the fight when I went to USA. I had my knee hurt and tore my meniscus and it messed up my standing training and takedowns. My knee displaced many times during the fight. I wasn't well at all. I wasn't 100%. Now it's time to train harder and face Randy."

Staph infection wasn’t the only malady the plagued former UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo “Minatauro” Nogueira during his losing title defense against Frank Mir at UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008" back in December. The Brazilian indicates that he was also nursing a knee injury, which required surgery to repair after the lopsided beating. He was apparently seriously messed up, which might help better explain his most recent outing — he was finished for the first time ever in his illustrious career via technical knockout in the second round. It was a feat that Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Mirko Cro Cop and even "The Beast" Bob Sapp have been unable to accomplish. Perhaps most surprising is that Mir — a Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt — schooled Nogueira in the stand up — an aspect that Nogueria appeared to have the advantage heading into the fight. That was certainly not the case. Now healthy, Nogueira is set to face another former champion and legend of the sport, Randy Couture, at UFC 102 on August 28. With his health issues seemingly resolved, can he climb back to the top of the division heap or have his brutal days in PRIDE taken their toll on his body and career?

Nick Diaz vs Scott Smith added to June 6 Strikeforce card

Posted: 27 Apr 2009 04:38 PM PDT

Strikeforce announced today that former Elite XC fighters and new Strikeforce acquisitions Nick Diaz (19-7) and Scott Smith (15-5) are confirmed for a special 180-pound showdown during the live Showtime telecast of Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis , Mo., on June 6.

Diaz (19-7) is coming off perhaps the biggest win of his career on April 11. The former UFC welterweight stopped promotion pillar Frank Shamrock via second round TKO in the main event of “Shamrock vs. Diaz” in the first Strikeforce event since putting its new Pro Elite acquisitions to work.

From Diaz:

"I think this is a great fight for me, but I really hate that (Smith) brings his kids to every one of his fights because now I'm going to be made out to be the bad guy or some sort of villain after I beat him up. At the end of the day, I'm going to do what I have to do though and take him out."

"Hands of Steel" lived up to his nickname earlier this month by knocking out the hard hitting Benji Radach with a little over a minute remaining in their three round slugfest. Smith was battered and bloodied, but refused to back down and stunned “Razor” — and the rest of the crowd with his thrilling come-from-behind win.

Now the two biggest winners from April 11 will meet on June 6 for a chance to crown themselves the King of St. Louis — and perhaps San Jose — now that Strikeforce elder statesman Frank Shamrock has dropped two straight.

From Smith:

"I usually take a few weeks off, get out of shape and go up to about 210 pounds and wind up spending a few weeks just getting back in shape, but I decided I wasn't going to do that this time. I'm 195 pounds right now and I feel great. Diaz is a great fighter. He's going to come in there and out grapple me and out strike me so what I have to do is go in there and beat him up. I actually think this is more of a dangerous fight for him than it is for me."

The June 6 event will be headlined by former EliteXC middleweight champion "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler taking on former EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields in a 182-pound catch weight bout in the featured main event.

Additionally, "The New York Badass" Phil Baroni (13-10) will collide with Joe "Diesel" Riggs (29-10) in a 170-pound scrap.

Tickets for Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" are on sale at the Scottrade Center box office as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce's official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Anderson Silva next fight should be against …

Got any better (more realistic) suggestions?

Patrick Cote was not afraid to fight Anderson Silva unlike ’scared’ Thales Leites

“[The UFC 97 main event was] boring! At least I tried to engage with Silva! Fuck, I’m actually a little pissed. I like Thales and all, but that was awful. He looked very scared and nervous in there. I wasn’t scared at all. I want Silva back!”

Former number one middlweight contender Patrick Cote — who underwent major knee surgery in November 2008 — talks about the five round snoozefest between Anderson Silva and Thales Leites at UFC 97 back on April 18. "The Predator" was also privy to a bizarre performance from “The Spider” at UFC 90 last October. The bout resulted in a technical knockout loss for the Canadian, which he feels may have gone his way if the freak accident never happened. Now that Silva is being heavily criticized for not engaging — and the talk of him staying at 205-pounds — it’s hard to imagine Cote ever finding himself in a rematch with Silva under the Zuffa banner.

UFC Quick Quote: If Randy can do it, so can Chuck

Posted: 27 Apr 2009 09:40 AM PDT

"Chuck can do whatever wants to do. It's disappointing. He lost to a great champion and that's no reason to retire … He's fought 100 times and only been knocked out twice. We'll talk about it in the next week or so but no one is going to tell him when he's going to stop fighting. A lot of people thought Randy Couture was done at heavyweight and he went to Light Heavyweight and won a title. He lost to Chuck a couple of times then they said he was done again and he went to heavyweight and won another title. It's up to Chuck. I don't think Chuck cares about his fights. He wanted to fight Tito because he didn't like him and for some reason he wanted to beat Vernon White … If someone beats him he doesn't like it but he says oh well, I've beat plenty of people. He doesn't want a rematch just because he got beat. He's the Ice Man. He's kind of cold about that."

– Long-time trainer of Chuck Liddell, John Hackleman, talks to Throw Them Bows about “The Iceman" — not UFC President Dana White — making the decision to retire from mixed martial arts competition. There may be a fighting fire that still burns inside the 39-year-old UFC legend despite his recent struggles inside the Octagon. We already know that Dana White made the decision for him to retire after the first round technical knockout loss to Mauricio "Shogun" this weekend at UFC 97: "Redemption. " It should be interesting to see if and when Chuck does make a decision whether or not it drives a wedge between him and White … especially if he wants to stick around and, at the very least, finish the last fight on his current deal and attempt to go out with his hand raised rather than flattened on the canvas.

Hermes Franca in talks for September return at UFC 103

Posted: 27 Apr 2009 09:22 AM PDT

Former lightweight number one contender Hermes Franca is planning to make his Octagon return in late September at UFC 103 according to Around the Octagon, though a date and venue have yet to be determined for this event.

Franca (19-7) was scratched from his 155-pound match up against Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 17 at USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., back on February 7 due to an ACL tear in his right knee.

Here's how it all went down:

To all my Fans, unfortunately I am not gonna be able to fight UFC 17 in Tampa Florida, I just tore my ACL on my right knee last Saturday….I think you guys deserve to hear that from me. I just want to take care of that, and Joe Lauzon you're lucky mother fucker lololol (J/K). Thank you UFC, my fans, friends for the support, I was training hard and I was so excited, but there's nothing I can do, (could be worse), so Hermes Franca will take a break for some recovery and come back stronger than ever like I always do!!!!

Franca has been on a roller coaster ride during the past 18 months. After returning last year from a 12-month steroids suspension, he came up short against Frank Edgar in his July 2008 comeback fight at UFC Fight Night 14.

The Brazilian then rebounded with a win against his former Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher Marcus Aurelio at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" in October. And shortly thereafter he was arrested in Jupiter, Fla., on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

That case is still pending; however, Franca has insisted that he was exhausted, which caused him to drive erratically. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Lauzon bested Jeremy Stephens (who replaced the injured Franca) back in February but did not lose his desire to face Franca — especially after Hermes downgraded his brother Dan’s performance at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning.’

From J-Lau:

He's talking a lot of trash for someone who pulled out of the fight. He said he was looking forward to fighting me because he saw my brother fight and (Dan) sucks. My brother took three low blows in that fight, could have ended it by DQ but instead kept fighting and beat the kid anyway. Before I wanted to fight (Hermes) because I had a lot of respect for him. Now I want to fight him because he's acting like a punk.

Lauzon is expected to return from his own ACL surgery in Spring 2010. If Franca is still in the mix and Lauzon gets a tune-up fight, expect to see them settle this feud once and for all.
