Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller tops Kala Hose at ‘Kingdom MMA’ debut event

Posted: 19 Apr 2009 11:55 AM PDT

The Hawaiian-based ‘Kingdom MMA,’ the creation of former SuperBrawl and Icon Sport president T. Jay Thompson, began its venture into the world of mixed martial arts last night with its inaugural show at the Blaisdell Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In the main event of the evening, former ICON Sport middleweight title holders Jason "Mayhem" Miller and hometown favorite Kala "Kolohe" Hose squared off for the right to become the first man to ever hold the Kingdom MMA belt.

A stubborn Mayhem decided to test his powerful opponent’s stand up game early by trading strikes with the dangerous Hawaiian. He didn’t do too bad in that department, maintaining his distance from Hose by scoring with a number of leg kicks.

It wasn’t long into the fight, however, before Hose gave the more well rounded Miller an opportunity to take the fight to the mat. And once he got it there it was only a matter of time before Kala’s major weakness as a pro fighter was exposed once again. This was the second time in his last three fights that the power puncher was forced to tap out in the first round.

Here’s Mayhem’s thoughts on the finish courtesy of the Honolulu Advertiser :

"I thought I was gonna finish him with the strikes. I hit him with a few good shots that hurt my damn hand, so I was, like, 'Oh, I'm gonna knock him out,' but he had a hard head. He was a tough dude. He gave his back to me, and you don't give your back to me. That's what I'm the best at."

There’s no question Hose has some potential in this sport based on his striking ability alone, but one dimensional fighters like him are a dime a dozen. This sport is much more than just striking or grappling or wrestling or whatever. You can’t be a "one trick pony" in today’s MMA and expect to be successful.

For Mayhem, he announced after the event that he would indeed be getting the long rumored rematch with Brazilian jiu-jitsu sensation Ronaldo "Jacare" de Souza on the DREAM 9 card at the Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa, Japan on May 26 for the DREAM middleweight title.

This puts him right on track to fulfilling his goals for 2009, which he revealed right here on MMAmania.com just last month. Here’s a snip:

"I'm gonna win three titles this year, watch. You'll see, watch. By the end of this year I'll have three belts and an MTV show."

One down … two to go.

UFC Quick Quote: Dana White ‘embarassed’ with UFC 97 main event

Posted: 19 Apr 2009 08:04 AM PDT

"I can honestly tell you that I've never put on an event that I was embarrassed to be at until tonight. I want to publicly apologize to all the fans…. I apologize. I personally apologize for what happened tonight. You guys know, this isn't what the UFC was built on and this isn't the way the fights usually go. Listen, any night you can have an off-night. When a guy is that talented and can literally end a fight whenever he wants to, wow."

– UFC President Dana White doesn’t mince any words in a Yahoo!Sports.com article when it comes to his thoughts on the UFC 97: “Redemption” main event between 185-pound champion Anderson Silva and Thales Leites at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, on April 18. The five-round snooze fest offered little in the way of entertainment because it appeared that Leites was reluctant to engage on the feet, opting instead to flop to the canvas anytime “The Spider” got close enough to do damage. He did manage, however, to win a few rounds merely because Silva was unable to get going, but it wasn’t nearly enough — Silva earned a unanimous decision win to a chorus of boo birds. So what do you think … worst UFC main event in recent memory or was Tim Sylvia vs. Andrei Arlovski 3 far worse? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Chuck Liddell: Retirement now seems likely with UFC 97 loss

Quoteworthy:

“At the end of the day, I care about these guys. I don’t want to see anybody stick around too long. You’re never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again…. Tonight was the end of an era. One of the greatest guys in the sport just fought his last fight tonight.”

UFC President Dana White sticks to his pre-UFC 97: “Redemption” guns, saying that his good friend and big time money-making machine, former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, is packing it in after a technical knockout loss to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, last night. It marked the fourth loss in his last five fights for the 39-year-old “Iceman,” as well as, according to White, the end of and era — perhaps no single fighter was more responsible for putting the sport on the map than the San Luis Obispo, Calif., native. We’ll pass along a more detailed report as the dust begins to settle on this unfortunate — albeit inevitable — result. Like when we hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
