Happy Birthday to us: MMAmania.com turns three

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:57 PM PDT

The first-ever show from the new-look Strikeforce MMA was not the only milestone to take place this weekend: MMAmania.com celebrated its third birthday in typical silent fashion.

None of our loyal readers bothered to send us their good wishes, but that’s okay, we’re used to giving all we got and receiving little in return.

That’s just how we roll … and how we have handled our business since Day One.

Kidding aside, I just want to take the opportunity to quickly thank all of you and everyone behind the scenes who allow us to do what we do, which is scouring the Web, delivering exclusive content and breaking news frequently all in one convenient location.

If you haven’t noticed, we also like to have a little fun along the way. It makes all those late nights, early mornings and long days (even holidays) worth every ounce of energy we put into this online mixed martial arts machine.

We never take ourselves too seriously. And I think that resonates with most of you — this is all about discussing a great sport within in a tight-knit community of knowledgeable (sans the handful of inevitable trolls) and hardcore fans.

The best part is we’ve just scratched the surface.

Most of you know we have now joined the SB Nation, which essentially will translate into a better user experience for all of you. We have some great people working behind the scenes to ensure that MMAmania.com 4.0 is the best one yet.

Stay tuned in the weeks and months ahead for more detailed updates. But trust me when I say there are some truly great and innovative things on the horizon.

I don’t want to turn this into a tree-hugging love or all out bash-fest. So in typical MMAmania.com fashion, I’d like to propose a contest that is fitting of such a moment.

Here it is:

  1. Guess the number of posts we have published to date (Hint: It’s more than one and less than 10,000)
  2. Find and send a link of our first-ever post (Hint: It was about three years ago)
  3. BRIEFLY share your first cherry-popping experience on MMAmania.com

That’s it. Again, post your findings in the comments section below or email them to us at fan-AT-mmamania.com if you want to keep it a deep, dark secret.

Those who come relatively close in satisfying all the above criteria get MMAmania.com shirts from me for free. Ain’t that swell? Hopefully, by the time our next anniversary rolls around we’ll be able to up the ante, but we won’t be able to accomplish that without your support … no matter how maddening that can often be (John, Kevin, Introvert and all of the other outspoken members of our community … I’m looking at you!)

So keep it coming. And tell all your friends to do the same. Spread the word!

Thanks again to everyone, whether you stop in once a week or 100 times a day. We couldn’t do it without you all. And thanks to everyone on our staff, Jesse, James, Adam, Stefan and any others who contribute, churning out good shit and putting up with mine.

As you were, Maniacs!

The mixed martial arts community gathered today (April 14) for a memorial service held at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California to honor Charles 'Mask' Lewis Jr., founder of the popular multi-million dollar MMA clothing line and television show TapouT.

The service "Simply Believe: A Celebration of Charles 'Mask' Lewis Jr." was not only a farewell, but a celebration of a life that passed too soon after a fatal car wreck on March 11.

UFC 94 replay a ratings success for Spike TV on April 11

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 11:48 AM PDT

UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2," which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 31, "pummeled the competition on both broadcast and cable" when it re-aired for free this weekend on Spike TV.

According to a recent press release from the network, UFC 94 was the number one program among men aged 18 to 34 "in all of television (cable and broadcast) during its time period (9 p.m. to 12 a.m. ET) on Saturday, April 11, 2009, scoring an overall 1.4 household rating and drawing an average audience of 1.9 million viewers.

In fact, it was the highest-rated telecast among men (aged 18 to 49) on cable for the entire day, which means that it likely attracted way more viewers than Strikeforce did with its "Shamrock vs. Diaz" mixed martial arts special on Showtime.

Whether or not the UFC was able to steal a huge chunk of fans away from watching the Strikeforce show, which it apparently was trying to do with its latest counter programming effort, remains to be seen. Regardless, the rebroadcast of UFC 94 was a ratings success.

And that's shouldn't come as much of a surprise, considering all the brouhaha before, during and after the "fight of a lifetime" between the two champions in their primes.

UFC 94 sold 13,622 tickets for an official live gate $4,290,020, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Complimentary tickets to the tune of 1,263 pushed attendance near the 15,000 mark, which would place it third all-time for the promotion behind UFC 83: "St. Pierre vs. Serra 2" back in April 2008 (21,390) and UFC 68: “The Uprising” in March 2007 (19,079).

In terms of revenue at the turn stiles, UFC 94 placed sixth — UFC 66, UFC 83, UFC 79, UFC 91 and UFC 71 all fared better at their respective gates.

Georges St. Pierre defeated BJ Penn via fourth round technical knockout to retain his 170-pound crown in the UFC 94 main event. Machida took one giant step toward earning his 205-pound title shot next month at UFC 98, blasting the previously undefeated Thiago Silva with a thundering first round knockout punch.

UFC dished out $1.1 million in fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event and another $325,000 in additional bonus money for five participants who delivered outstanding performances.

Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller vs Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza fight possible for DREAM 9 on May 26

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 09:06 AM PDT

Grappling phenom Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is possibly slated to once again do battle with the charismatic Jason “Mayhem” Miller at “DREAM 9″ from the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, on May 26, according to a Tatame.com report.

The bout will likely be contested for the DREAM middleweight title because the current champion, Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1), has relinquished the belt to prepare for a move up to light heavyweight.

This will be the second encounter between “Jacare” and “Mayhem” — the pair first met during DREAM's Middleweight Grand Prix quarterfinals at “DREAM 4″ in June 2008. The bout would go the distance and the conclusion would see Souza garner a unanimous decision victory over Miller.

First things first, however.

“Mayhem” has to get past dangerous striker Kalo Hose (7-2) at the debut show for “Kingdom MMA” on April 18, which could put Miller’s proposed bout in jeopardy if any injuries are sustained or he can't make a quick enough turn around.

Hopefully it won't come to that.

“Dream 9″ will feature the promotion’s featherweight grand prix quarterfinals.

The focal point of which will boast the long awaited return of 139-pound superstar Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, who was offered a first-round bye in the tournament in hopes that he will have recovered from a previous injury in time to compete. He's coming off a long 16-month layoff but now he's finally ready to compete and will take on wrestling standout Joe Warren.

In non-tournament action will be highly regarded lightweight standout Gesias “JZ” Calvancante who is set to do battle with Japanese mainstay Tatsuya Kawajiri.

That's it for now. Look for more fights to be added as we get closer to May 26.

Here is the current line-up for “DREAM 9:”

Featherweight grand prix quarterfinals:
Norifumi Yamamoto (17-1) vs. Joe Warren (1-0)
Masakazu Imanari (16-6-1) vs. Bibiano Fernandes (4-2)
Yoshiro Maeda (24-6-2) vs. Hiroyuki Takaya (10-6-1)
Abel Cullum (14-2) vs. Hideo Tokoro (21-16-1)

DREAM middleweight title:
Ronaldo Souza (10-2) vs. Jason Miller (21-6)

Non-tournament bouts:
Gesias Calvancante (14-2-1) vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri (23-5-2)

UFC Quick Quote: ‘The Crow’ returns home on April 18

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 06:41 AM PDT

“Loiseau, he’s another one of my favorites. I love that kid. He’s such a nice guy. He went through a streak there in the UFC where he wasn’t really letting it all go and got some losses. Ed Herman’s a tough son of a bitch, man. Ed Herman’s mean, nasty and tough. If Loiseau can get by him, he deserves to be back in the UFC…. This guy trains with GSP, he’s talented as hell. He can kick, he can punch, he’s good on the ground. It’s just like he wasn’t letting it go for some reason. He’s still young, he’s in his prime. So we’ll see. Herman’s a mean bastard, man. If he can get through Herman, he’s back.”

– UFC President Dana White shares his thoughts via The Canadian Press on the return of former number one middleweight contender David Loiseau to the Octagon after nearly three years competing outside the organization. “The Crow” was let loose after a loss to Mike Swick in 2006. He is now set to make a comeback against Ed Herman in front of a friendly crowd at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18. Can the 29-year-old Canadian recapture his old form or will “Short Fuse” spoil his homecoming this weekend? We will find out soon enough.
