Rodrigo Damm to replace injured Josh Thomson against Gilbert Melendez on April 11 Posted: 06 Apr 2009 07:59 PM PDT BoDog Fight and Sengoku veteran Rodrigo Damm (8-2) has agreed to fill for the injured Josh Thomson to face Gilbert Melendez on the main card of Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” set to take place this Saturday, April 11 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, according to The Fight Network. “The Punk” broke his left leg last Wednesday while training for his first title defense against the man who he defeated to capture it, Gilbert Melendez. A search for a replacement to challenge "El Nino" has been underway for the Showtime card — the first for the promotion since acquiring select assets, including fighter contracts, from Pro Elite earlier this year. Enter Rodrigo Damm, a Brazilian submission specialist who holds a notable win over current Bellator Fighting Championship lightweight contestant Jorge Masvidal, as well as submission victories over Kulter Gill, Santino Defranco and Naoki Seki. Thus far in his illustrious career he’s finished five of his eight victims by way of tapout, including four of those by rear naked choke. However, it’s been a while since Damm last saw action. In fact, he hasn’t competed since August of last year, losing for only the second time in his career at Sengoku: “Fourth Battle” by first round submission to cagey veteran Eiji Mitsuoka (15-6-2). Melendez has spent some time away from active competition as well, with his last fight having been the loss to Thomson nearly ten months ago at last June’s Strikeforce: “Melendez vs. Thomson.” This won’t be an easy fight for the former champion because this fill-in has clearly got some talent. Still, Damm is facing a huge hurdle in not only having to fight on such short notice, but having to match up with “El Nino” when he’s coming off a loss. It’s not an enviable situation to say the least, but still a big opportunity for the Brazilian. “Shamrock vs. Diaz” will be the debut for the promotion on the premium cable network Showtime. The main card will air beginning at 9 p.m. ET, and of course MMAmania.com will be your spot for all the event coverage. Check in early and often. We’re less than a week away. |
Amir Sadollah vs. Johny Hendricks in the works for UFC 101 Posted: 06 Apr 2009 07:26 PM PDT The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 season winner, Amir Sadollah, will once again attempt to get back inside the Octagon for the first time since winning the Spike TV mixed martial arts reality series back in June 2008. FiveOuncesOfPain.com reports that the former middleweight is in talks to make his welterweight debut opposite undefeated collegiate wrestling sensation Johny Hendricks at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 8. Sadollah has been plagued by injuries ever since a submission win over CB Dolloway at TUF 7 Finale. He was expected to follow up that performance against Nick Catone at UFC 91: "Lesnar vs. Couture" on November 15. However, just four days before fight night he had to withdraw because of a leg infection. It was so severe that was hospitalized for the condition. The pair was then rebooked to collide at UFC Fight Night 17 at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., on February 7. But it was apparently not meant to be — this time around Sadollah reportedly injured his clavicle. Sadollah now has four months to rehabilitate any injuries and prepare for his 170-pound debut. Hopefully, he can stay healthy this time around because he is going to need to be 100 percent if he plans to topple a stud like Hendricks. The Team Takedown product is a two-time national champion collegiate wrestler at Oklahoma State University (OSU), earning All-American accolades all four years as a Cowboy. He just missed three-peating as the Division I NCAA 165-pound national champion in 2007 when he lost in the final to Mark Perry — a standout from the University of Iowa. As a professional mixed martial artist, Hendricks has been impressive as well. In his debut in September 2007, he scored a third round technical knockout over Victor Ratcliff at Masters of the Cage 16. Hendricks took one more fight in 2007, a second round technical knockout win Spencer Cowley. Hendricks is a former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) employee with two wins under his belt — a technical knockout over Justin Haskins and a unanimous decision win over Alex "The Russian Crusher" Serdyukov. When the promotion dissolved its welterweight division in late 2008, Hendricks was an obvious choice to make the transition over to the UFC. UFC 101 will likely feature a main event between lightweight champion BJ Penn against number one contender Kenny Florian, as well as a 205-pound showdown between former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin and the previously unbeaten Thiago Silva in the co-featured fight of the night. UFC 101: Tamdan McCrory vs. John Howard on tap for August 8 Posted: 06 Apr 2009 06:42 PM PDT Up-and-coming welterweights Tamdan McCrory and John Howard are in negotiations to collide at for UFC 101, which is tentatively scheduled to take place at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 8. MMAmania.com learned about the 170-pound showdown over the weekend. McCrory recently stepped up on short notice to replace an injured Ben Saunders against the debuting Ryan Madigan (who was replacing an injured Dustin Hazelett) to score a first round submission win (strikes) at UFC 96: “Jackson vs. Jardine” just last month. It was a big win for the “Barncat,” coming off a submission loss to Brazilian jiu-jitsu Wunderkind Dustin Hazelett at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" on November 15. The 20-something college student at The State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) who also moonlights as a full-time fighter, has defeated Luke Cummo via unanimous decision at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" and tapped Pete Spratt in his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 10 in June 2007. He'll look for the momentum to continue to roll against one of the brightest young welterweight prospects on the East Coast. Howard earned his shot in the big show courtesy of a solid record fighting in smaller shows throughout the Northeast such as Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships. In his first trip to the Octagon, “Doomsday” outpointed the venerable Chris Wilson at UFC 94 on Jan. 31, earning “Fight of the Night” honors for the performance. UFC 101 will likely feature a main event between lightweight champion BJ Penn against number one contender Kenny Florian, as well as a 205-pound showdown between former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin and the previously unbeaten Thiago Silva in the co-featured fight of the night. UFC and THQ plan additional new video game releases for 2010 and 2011 Posted: 06 Apr 2009 06:29 PM PDT "UFC Undisputed 2009″ is expected to flood the market on May 19 to the pleasure of fans and gamers worldwide. It’s the first video game for the promotion since Ultimate Fighting Championship: "Sudden Impact" back in 2004 — five very long years. Don’t expect to have to wait that long ever again … at least in the near-term. MMAmania.com has learned that THQ, the acclaimed video game development company that has an exclusive five-year contract with the UFC, plans to release a new UFC video game every year for the next two years. Sources close to Ripten.com — a popular video game site — shared the good news with us over the weekend. “UFC Undisputed 2009″ will feature 80 current and former UFC fighters, including Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, as well as extra downloadable fighters such as Ryan Bader and Efrain Escudero if the purchase is made from Gamestop. The only very notable exception from the amazingly deep roster is Randy Couture, but with at least two more UFC games in the works, it’s possible that “The Natural” could appear in a future game if we don't see him first included as downloadable content on Xbox Live Market Place or the Playstation Store. It seems that with three UFC games planned for release, publisher THQ is looking for the UFC video game franchise to eventually attain the success of games based on the WWE or even Madden.
