BELLATOR I BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
Here we go … finally some tournament action!

Lightweight Grand Prix Opening Round Bouts (155-pound limit)

Nick Agallar vs. Jorge Masvidal

Round one: Masvidal — the hometown favorite — comes out to the center of the cage to the roar of the crowd. Agallar looks like he wants nothing to do in this fight … like he’d much rather be some place else. Just like that Masvidal drops him with one punch and Agallar covers up to avoid the incoming barrage. Masvidal unloads, throwing about 9,000 punches while Agallar’s head bounces of the canvas like a video game. Finally the referee comes to the rescue and stops the fight. What a mismatch. Masvidal scores a punishing technical knockout in less than 90 seconds against an opponent who appeared to be looking for a way out.

Final result: Jorge Masvidal defeats Nick Agallar via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

-end-

Eddie Alvarez vs. Greg Loughran

Round one: Both fighters come out guns blazing, trading a flurry of hooks. Loughran drops Alvarez to a knee with a BIG punch. He pushes the Irishman up against the cage to get his bearings. He pulls back to unload, but again, Loughran gets the better of the exchanges. This is a BRAWL! Loughran nails Alvarez with a knee and the two begin to slow down. He finally gets Loughran up against the cage and trips him. Alvarez then grabs his head and goes for a guillotine choke. Loughran is sitting, with his back trapped against the cage, and can’t move. He has no choice but to tap. Alvarez holds on a little while longer just for good measure. That was very scary in the early going for Alvarez, but he once again showed his chin and grit to storm back and get the big win … complete with flying back flip off the top of the cage when all was said and done.

Final result: Eddie Alvarez defeats Greg Loughran via submission (guillotine choke) in round one

-end-

Alonzo Martinez vs. Toby Imada

Round one: Martinez comes out with a high kick that Imada blocks. They hit the ground but both end up pressed against the fence. Feeling each other out on the feet … Martinez misses with a spinning backfist. Imada capitalizes, taking him down and landing in side control. Martinez lands a very nice upkick, which aggravates Imada who rains down punches while standing. He closes the gap and lands in Martinez’ full guard. Imada now working for side control. He gets it and Martinez rolls to all fours to try and escape. He rolls again, but this time right into a rear naked choke. Both hooks are in … Martinez taps! Imada takes home the submission win.

Final result: Toby Imada defeats Alonzo Martinez via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

-end-

Featherweight Grand Prix Opening Round Bouts (145-pound limit)

Nick Gonzalez vs. Yahir Reyes

Round one: Both fighters come out a little frenetic, looking to establish authority. Reyes swings and misses with a wild right. Gonzalez manages to get close enough and takes the fight to the mat. Reyes, however, is able to get back to his feet real quick. Gonzalez appears to stun Reyes with a knee, but not for long — Reyes answers with a one-two jab combination that puts Gonzales on his keester. Reyes then races to meet Gonzalez on the floor to secure a fight-ending rear naked choke. Wow! That was fast. Nice upset.

Final result: Yahir Reyes defeats Nick Gonzalez via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

-end-

Estevan Payan vs. Luis Palomino

Round one: Payan starts the action with a stiff left jab. He follows it up with a right kick to the head. Both fighters now circling not doing much. Palomino misses with a short left hook. Crowd begins to boo. Payan lands a kick to the left tit of Palomino. More booing. Palomino throws a flurry that hits nothing but air. He finally lands a nice short left hook. And another … and another! He’s swinging for the fences now. Back to circling in the center of the cage. Palomino is bleeding heavily out of his nose … it looks like he’s having real trouble breathing. Palomino lands a big left-right, and then another blow that knocks Payan down. He recovers fast and is up on his feet instantly. Palomino misses another big punch and Payan makes him pay, flooring him with a powerful right. Round ends before Payan can finish. Palomino saved by the bell!

Round two: Round two starts off just like the first … cautious. Payan throws a high kick that misses. Palomino appears to be playing keep away. He finally engages and knocks Payan off balance with a blow to the body. Another high kick from Payan that is blocked. Here come the boos … and on cue here comes the action — both fighters trade nice shots. Palomino lands a low kick that nearly takes Payan off his feet. Palomino throwing haymakers but nothing is finding its mark. Payan now appears to be on the defensive. Palomino’s right eye now appears to be closing shut. Round ends with the fighters in the clinch, thorwing punches trying to steal it. Very hard to score that one.

Round three: Both fighters appear to still have lots of ebergy, bouncing across the cage. Payan misses with another head kick. And another. Time for the boos. Palomino is stalking Payan and nails him with a short left hook. He’s backing Payan into the cage, but Payan wisely escapes. Payan keeps throwing that high kick, but it just isn’t landing. He lands a nice kick to the belly of Palomino. Palomino still pushing the pace but just can’t seem to get anything going. Palomino is complaining about an inadvertent eye poke but the referee encourages him to keep going. Both fighters finally exchange in a flurry but not much happens. Bell rings to end the action. The crowd seems relieved — not much going on in that one.

Final result: Estevan Payan defeats Luis Palomino via split decision

-end-

Joe Soto vs. Ben Greer

Round one: Both fighters come out very tentative to start the fight. After some initial feeling out, Soto grabs for a leg and pushes for the takedown, but Greer defends. They work back toward the center of the cage and trade big right hands. Soto goes for a whizzer and nails it and then Greer once he has him on the ground. He quickly secures full mount. Greer rolls and gives up his back. Soto takes it and sinks in the hooks. He’s high, making it hard to sink in the rear naked choke. Greer eventually escapes onto his back, but Soto starts drilling him with unanswered rights. The referee has no choice but to jump in and save Greer. Soto scores a technical knockout.

Final result: Joe Soto defeats Ben Greer via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

‘Razor’ Rob McCullough to enter VH1s Celebrity Rehab: ‘Sex Addiction’ with Dr. Drew

Posted: 03 Apr 2009 12:32 PM PDT

Former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough will be part of the cast for a new VH1 reality series called “Celebrity Rehab: Sex Addiction,” according to MMAWeekly.com.

The show will be the second spin-off from the popular “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew” which focused on notable personalities, including Guns ‘n’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, actor Gary Busey and comedian Andy Dick, as well as others trying to overcome their addictions to drugs and/or alcohol.

VH1 also put out a nine episode program earlier this year titled, “Sober House” which was centered around “sober living” … the next step in addiction.

The timing for McCullough choosing to overcome his “addiction” couldn’t be better. He broke his hand during a split decision win over Marcus Hicks last month at WEC 39 and is expected to miss up to nine months recovering from the injury.

He also just recently broke up with his porn star girlfriend Lexxi Tyler — star of such cinematic classics as “Muff Bumpers 5,” “Housewives Hunting Housewives,” “The Boobs of Hazard,” “Rack By Popular Demand 3″ and others. The split has probably left Razor Rob a little short on getting his daily fix.

The ex-champ has also been linked to or seen with various other adult stars and Playboy playmates throughout the years.

The show is set to begin filming this Monday and there is no set date for the program to air as of yet. The cast has basically been kept a secret so it’s unclear at this time what other “celebrities” will be featured, but surely there’s a long list of candidates.

Nick Diaz is not a doctor or a scientist …

Posted: 03 Apr 2009 12:03 PM PDT

… but he has smoked plenty of weed:

“Well, people’s problem from what I see is they can’t stop taking pain pills once they start. And you’re not too good all pilled out, you know? Nobody does good all, you know, I mean I can’t say because I don’t take the shit, but I see them. I have a lot of friends who do a lot of drugs. There’s a lot of people everywhere that do a lot of drugs. Everybody, everybody, is on drugs dude. If they’re not, they’re an alcoholic or something. I don’t know if you noticed that or whatever, look around. The thing is, you know, it’s just, it would be a lot healthier for people to think, you know, it could be, shit, this sort of thing could be the healthiest thing someone does out of their day. Let’s take for example a person whose laying in bed, a cancer patient, a fat person, if you will. Someone who doesn’t do shit all day. That muscle contraction, that core strength that kind of happens, that pulls together when you’re maybe smoking weed or whatever, you know, you’re coughing or whatever, and that blood flow that happens at that point in time, you know what I mean? It’s sort of good for you. You know what I mean? I’m not a doctor or a fucking scientist, but I’ve smoked plenty of weed. And, you know, I think in my opinion it’s pretty damn good for you. It could be the healthiest thing someone does out of their day if they’re just going to lay there. You know, the most blood flow and exercise that they get out of the day. They’re going to cough weed, you know, and as far as lungs go or whatever, I’ve never had a problem with them. There’s no chemicals involved. I don’t know if you know this, but cigarettes, you know, when people smoke cigarettes it closes your airwaves, but when you’re smoking marijuana it expands your lungs, you know, you’re breathing pretty good. You have more airflow as far as I’m concerned. And, that’s paper that people are smoking. They’re not smoking tobacco. Those little shreds are paper that are soaked in tobacco flavored juice on a conveyor belt and then they wrap it up in a cigarette. But it’s all paper soaked in tobacco flavored juice. Everybody thinks they’re smoking tobacco or something, it’s disgusting. It’s all chemicals. Why do we have a hundred different things in a cigarette that they added to it when tobacco grows right out of the ground? I wonder if people would die from cancer if they were just smoking straight tobacco. I really do.”

Nick Diaz responds to a question about the difference between taking pain medication and other types of drugs during a conference call yesterday to promote his upcoming fight against Frank Shamrock on April 11 in San Jose. Classic Nick Diaz.

New York, NY, April 3, 2009 — Unlike most television series which suffer ratings decline as they get older, the ratings for "The Ultimate Fighter" are like fine wine, getting better with age.

The season nine premiere of "The Ultimate Fighter: U.S. vs. U.K." on Wednesday, April 1 drew its highest rating in Men 18-49 since Season 4 (August, 2006) and its most watched season premiere since Season 5 (April, 2007). This season, the two "Ultimate Fighter" teams are divided based on nationality, with eight mixed martial artists from Great Britain and eight from the United States. "The Ultimate Fighter 3" champion and top middleweight contender Michael Bisping coaches the Brits, and former concurrent PRIDE champion of the 185 lbs and 205 lbs divisions and U.S. Olympian Dan Henderson, coaches the U.S. squad.

MMA Quick Quote: Abongo Humphrey has ‘Grim’ outlook for Brett Rogers on April 11

Posted: 03 Apr 2009 09:36 AM PDT

“My experience on ‘Iron Ring’ was fascinating. I faced some pretty good opponents there … I'm coming in at around 245 pounds. You can expect a lot of movement…I like to move and I like to mix it up. I definitely like to stand up and strike. I'm a new talent and I think I'm pretty multi-faceted. I'm kind of like Brett in that a lot of my fights haven't gotten past my hands and my legs so they haven't really had a chance to see my ground game. Hopefully this fight they'll get a chance to see that. If not, then the fight will end with a punch or a kick."

–Ron Humphrey (5-0), former participant on the BET reality show ‘Iron Ring,’ anticipates his Strikeforce debut against the heavy-handed Brett Rogers (8-0) during yesterday’s Showtime-Strikeforce conference call. The undefeated “Abongo” won two fights on the BET show while being coached by UFC veteran Shonie Carter and the Atlanta, Georgia resident looks to keep that momentum going against “The Grim” on April 11 in San Jose.

Dong Sik Yoon injury cancels fight against Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua on April 5

Posted: 03 Apr 2009 08:55 AM PDT

In his first trip to Japan since the demise of PRIDE, Murilo Rua may have to wait to make his debut for DREAM after Korea's Dong Sik Yoon (4-6) was forced off the DREAM 8 card with an undisclosed injury, according to Nightmare of Battle.

"Ninja" (16-9-1) hasn't competed since a technical knockout loss to Benji Radach at "Heat" last October for the now-defunct Elite XC organization. He signed with DREAM after Strikeforce reportedly opted to pass on his acquired Pro Elite contract.

DREAM officials are currently scrambling to find a replacement, and the Japanese promotion is notorious for finding fighters on short notice, so there is still a chance that Rua will compete. It should be noted, however, that both fighters have been removed from the official lineup.

Here is the current DREAM 8 card, scheduled for the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan:

Main card:
Sergei Kharitonov (16-3) vs. Jeff Monson (29-8)
Ikuhisa Minowa (41-29-8) vs. Katsuyori Shibata (2-6-1)
Andrews Nakahara (1-1) vs. Shungo Oyama (7-11)
Vitor Ribeiro (19-2) vs. Katsuhiko Nagata (4-4-1)

Welterweight Grand Prix:
Shinya Aoki (20-3) vs. Hayato Sakurai (34-8-2)
Andre Galvao (2-0) vs. John Alessio (24-12)
Yuya Shirai (15-7) vs. Jason High (6-1)
Marius Zaromskis (8-2) vs. Seichi Ikemoto (18-14-5)

Featherweight Grand Prix:
Hideo Tokoro (21-15-1) vs. Daiki Hata (10-5-3)

Stay tuned for more information on Rua’s participation as it becomes available. In the meantime, get up to speed on all things DREAM by clicking here.
