Jim Miller vs Thiago Tavares UFC 103 fight announced for Sept. 19

Posted: 04 Aug 2009 04:21 AM PDT

It was recently announced that Jim Miller (14-2) and Thiago Tavares (14-3) will collide in a lightweight showdown at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19.

Miller is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Mac Danzig at UFC 100 on July 11, during which he leveraged his strong wrestling skills and ground and pound to beat the California native to a bloody pulp.

It was the fourth fight for the New Jersey native inside the Octagon and his third win. A unanimous decision loss to the streaking Gray Maynard at UFC 96 back on March 7 is the only blip during that span. His other wins include Matt Wiman and David Baron.

Tavares most recently appeared inside the cage against Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ on Jan. 31, scoring a unanimous decision win over the “Pitbull.” He was supposed to return to action much sooner; however, he reportedly sustained an elbow injury while training for a bout against Melvin Guillard, forcing him out of the lightweight contest earlier this year.

After bursting onto the UFC scene with two straight wins, Tavares created quite a buzz as a possible threat to the champion. However, he has since come back down to Earth, losing three of his last five fights.

Stringing together consecutive victories inside the Octagon for this first time since 2007 would more than likely propel him back into the mix.

UFC 103 will feature a new-look main event between Rich "Ace" Franklin and Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort at a 195-pound catchweight. Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos.

In addition, Martin Kampmann and Mike Swick will collide to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title.

MMA Quick Quote: Gina Carano plans on keeping the load right where it’s at

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 10:05 PM PDT

“When I first started in Showtime I was called the pet project: 'Here, I'm going to help you out and put you on this show.' In my head, I'm like, I train and work out like everyone else. They like to tell you what you're not. They like to keep you down, so they can get more out of you for their money. But fans don't lie. When they're all chanting your name, you know they're supporting you. So we went from being the pet project to now we're headlining an event. So this is huge for me. I've been carrying this whole thing with women's mixed martial arts for a couple years, and that's a lot. It'd be a great thing to win and hold that belt. But that means that load stays right where it's at.”

– Female mixed martial arts mega-star and recent Strikeforce acquisition Gina Carano shares her evolution as a fighter with the New York Times heading into her championship bout against Chute Boxe-trained striker Cristiane Santos on August 15. "Conviction" has not competed since a three-round drubbing of Kelly Kobold in October 2008, winning via unanimous decision and pushing her perfect record to seven wins versus zero defeats. Can she handle the fury of Cyborg? Or will the Brazilian crumble against Carano’s Muay Thai? Predictions please…

UFC 104: Joe Stevenson vs Spencer Fisher in the works for Oct. 24

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 04:59 PM PDT

There’s a fantastic lightweight match-up brewing between 155-pound standouts Joe Stevenson (30-10) and Spencer Fisher (23-4), who are currently in talks to hook ‘em up at UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.

A source close to Fisher informed MMAmania.com of the pending bout earlier today.

"Daddy" — who was the TUF 2 welterweight winner — returned to form at The Ultimate Finale 9 by outworking Nate Diaz en route to a decisive unanimous decision victory.

It was a much needed win for the former 170-pounder after losing back-to-back bouts to current division number one contender Kenny "KenFlo" Florian and the new-look Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez in a close unanimous decision scrap.

The newly-minted Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will look to make it two straight with a win over “The King.”

Fisher has won four of his last five bouts, including a close unanimous decision nod over the returning Caol Uno at UFC 99 back on June 13.

The Miletich Fighting Systems veteran is a former top contender in the 155-pound class with an exceptionally well rounded arsenal. A win over an opponent the caliber of Stevenson will prove once again that he still belongs among the division's elite.

In fact, the same can be said for both men.

UFC 104 will feature a main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez have also been rumored to collide to determine the UFC number one heavyweight contender.

Dana White: Fedor Emelianenko is a ‘joke’ …

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 01:48 PM PDT

… for signing a multi-fight co-promotional deal with Strikeforce rather than accepting different terms offered by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), according to a CageWriter report:

“”I’m in Abu Dhabi right now and my reaction is Fedor is a [expletive] joke. [He] turns down a huge deal and the opportunity to face the best in the world to fight nobodies, for no money. Fedor is a [expletive]!”

Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed with the Strikeforce-Emelianenko announcement earlier today. However, we do know that the “nobodies” that White refers to include Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers and Fabricio Werdum, among others. Impressed?

Mike Kyle agrees to step up and challenge Fabricio Werdum at Aug. 15 Strikeforce event

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 09:33 AM PDT

Strikeforce officials today confirmed that Mike Kyle (12-6-1) has agreed to return to the heavyweight division on short notice to face Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1) on the August 15 “Carano vs. Cyborg” card after original opponent Alistair Overeem was forced to withdraw due to a nagging hand injury.

The news comes just one day after Strikeforce planned to scrap the Werdum bout altogether after a suitable replacement could not be found.

Kyle is no stranger to filling in for injured opponents. He recently replaced the banged-up Jared Hamman against Rafael Cavalcante on the undercard of “Lawler vs. Shields” on June 6, knocking “Feijao” senseless in the second round of their light heavyweight contest.

It was the third appearance for “MAK” under the Strikeforce banner, who also spent time mixing it up in the UFC and WEC. His last appearance under Zuffa's sister-promotion saw him suspended for nearly two years after being DQ'd for illegal kicks and punches and then striking his opponent after the bell at "Cinco de Mayhem" back in May 2006.

Werdum will be making his first appearance with Strikeforce after going 2-2 in the UFC following his April 2007 debut. After losing a cautious slapfest against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 70, Werdum put together two straight TKO victories over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, only to get bounced from the promotion when he was upset (and uppercut) by out-of-the-blue bruiser Junior Dos Santos.

Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" will feature a 145-pound title fight between female fighting sensation Gina "Conviction" Carano and her nemesis Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos as well as a 170-pound scrap between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron for the newly-created welterweight championship.
