Vladimir Matyushenko returns to the Octagon against Igor Pokrajac at UFC 103

Posted: 12 Aug 2009 04:30 PM PDT

Former number one light heavyweight contender Vladimir Matyushenko will return to the Octagon after a six-year hiatus to take on Igor Pokrajac at UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” from the the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The promotion today announced the light heavyweight bout, finalizing its 13-fight card planned for the “Lone Star” state.

Back in Sept. 2001, Matyushenko challenged then light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz, at UFC 33: “Victory in Vegas,” losing a five-round unanimous decision. “The Janitor” would rebound and mop up Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Travis Wiuff and Pedro Rizzo before sustaining a knockout loss to fellow Belarusian, Andrei Arlovski, at UFC 44: “Undisputed” in Sept. 2003.

He was cut lose by the promotion shortly after the loss, amassing a respectable record (3-1) during his tenure.

Matyushenko would go on to wreak havoc under the International Fight League (IFL) banner, winning six consecutive fights and earning the promotion’s first-ever 205-pound belt with a unanimous decision win over Alex Schoenauer by unanimous decision to become the first ever light heavyweight champion in 2007.

The 38-year-old most recently scored a unanimous decision over Jason Lambert at “Call to Arms I” this past May. Matyushenko has won nine of 10 fights since the loss to Arlovski and will look to improve that tally when he takes on Igor Pokrajac.

Pokrajac is perhaps best known as the top sparring partner of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, who is scheduled to co-headline UFC 103 opposite Junior dos Santos. He’s not just getting a UFC shot on that alone — he is currently enjoying an eight-fight win streak.

He most recently toppled Kalvis Gebauers via technical knockout at WFC 8: “D-Day” in April 2009. Pokrajac has faced notable opponents such as Assuerio Silva and Mamed Khalidov, but came up empty on both attempts. It’s safe to say that Matyushenko will be among his toughest tests to date.

UFC 103 will feature a new-look main event between Rich "Ace" Franklin and Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort at a 195-pound catchweight. Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos.

In addition, Martin Kampmann will be out to put a "hit" on Mike Swick to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title.

UFC Quick Quote: Forrest Griffin’s speedy exit at UFC 101 ‘wasn’t really a big deal’

Posted: 12 Aug 2009 12:16 PM PDT

“He wasn’t injured. He’s an emotional guy and he just didn’t feel like sticking around. He’s done that before. After the Jardine fight, they kind of surrounded him a little bit, but he said a couple of things into the mic and left the cage pretty quickly. Just the emotions of…here is a guy who is very confident that he could win this fight and he just never had a chance to get off. He’s an emotional creature, so he left the cage. It wasn’t really a big deal. I think people are making a bigger deal about it then it really is. It wasn’t anything left to see anyway. Anderson had beaten him and it wasn’t like it was going to a decision. We already knew what happened, so he decided to go into the back and get his tape off and get changed and everything else. I think he was kind of comforting us more than anything else because we were all down and bothered and you know, that’s that.”

– Xtreme Couture boxing coach Ron Frazier tells FightHype.com that the hoopla surrounding Forrest Griffin’s mad dash for the locker room following his knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101 was much ado about nothing — and that most of what people wanted to know in his post-fight comments was already covered in the few minutes he spent getting manhandled by “The Spider.” Do fighters have an obligation to their opponents to stay for the official announcement? Or is it okay to split if they’re not in the right frame of mind? Sound off, Maniacs.

UFC 106: Jon Fitch vs Ricardo Almeida in the works for Nov. 21

Posted: 12 Aug 2009 11:31 AM PDT

Fresh off his unanimous decision victory over Kendall Grove at UFC 101, MMAmania.com has learned that Ricardo Almeida (11-3) will finally get to make his welterweight debut when he tangles with 170-pound stalwart Jon Fitch (19-3) at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Since returning to the sport of mixed martial arts after a self-imposed three-year layoff to open the Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Hamilton, N.J., "Cachorrao" has posted a 3-1 record, which includes wins over Grove, as well as the previously unbeaten Rob Yundt at UFC 81 and Matt Horwich at UFC Fight Night 18.

The lone loss came via split decision to the hard-hitting Patrick Cote at UFC 86 — a fight that earned "The Predator" a title shot against middleweight kingpin, Anderson Silva.

Almeida was expected to make the drop in weight prior to UFC 101; however, Joe Silva offered him a chance to fight in front of his hometown crowd if he remained at 185-pounds to mix it up with “Da Spyder” during the televised portion of the Philadelphia event.

It was an offer he couldn’t, and didn’t, refuse.

With the hard-fought win behind him, Almeida can now set his sights on the welterweight division — against arguably one of the toughest competitors in the entire class.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

The former number one welterweight contender returned to the Octagon at UFC 100 to exact revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago, taking the contest via unanimous decision. The Brazilian stunned his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy training partner, Josh Koscheck, with a fight-ending first round uppercut at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" earlier this year.

The Purdue University wrestler now boasts 10 victories for the promotion in 11 attempts. The lone blemish on his record is to welterweight deity Georges "Rush" St. Pierre in their championship match from UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" in Aug. 2008.

And the competition isn’t getting any easier.

Stay tuned for more information on the developing UFC 106 fight card as it becomes available.
