Kyle Bradley injured and ruled out against Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 19

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 07:33 PM PDT

Lightweight Kyle Bradley recently sustained an undisclosed injury while training, forcing him out of his upcoming bout against Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 19: “Diaz vs. Guillard” from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Saturday, Sept. 16.

No replacement to take on “Hands of Stone” is known at this time.

Bradley was out to prove that his first round technical knockout win over Phillipe Nover at UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” back in May, which took less than 65 seconds, was no fluke.

That’s because the 155-pound bout was mired in controversy when it appeared that Nover — The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 lightweight finalist — was in trouble after a big slam and subsequent flurry from Bradley. However, replays showed that Nover appeared to be maneuvering for a submission when the referee in charge of the action, Yves Lavigne, stepped in to stop the action.

Regardless, the result stood and Bradley registered his first win inside the Octagon in three attempts. He’ll now have to wait a little while longer to make it two out of four.

UFC Fight Night 19: "Diaz vs. Guillard" will feature a main event between hungry lightweight up-and-comers and former TUF grads Nate Diaz and Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard.

In addition, Roger "El Matador" Huerta will throwdown for perhaps the last time inside the Octagon as he tries to leave on a high note against the stifling super-wrestler Gray "The Bully" Maynard.

UFC 106: Tito Ortiz vs Mark Coleman ‘confirmed’ for Nov. 21

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 03:34 PM PDT

Former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz is set to make his return to the Octagon opposite the first-ever heavyweight champion for the promotion, Mark Coleman, at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Mike Disabato, founder of MMA Authentics and long-time friend/training partner of Coleman, today “confirmed” the rumored 205-pound match up via Twitter.com. No official announcement has come from the promotion … yet.

However, company president Dana White indicated on numerous occasions that this is the showdown that fans could expect to see in the coming months.

“The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” is coming off major spinal fusion surgery to correct a back problem that plagued him in his most recent bouts. His last appearance was in May 2008 — a unanimous decision loss to now 205-pound champion, Lyoto Machida.

It's been more than a year since Ortiz saw action in that performance, which had him in trouble early only to nearly finish it with a triangle-to-armbar transition that "The Dragon" barely escaped.

After the loss, it appeared that the decade-long tumultuous relationship between Ortiz and White had finally reached its breaking point; however, the pair was able to miraculously mend fences just last month and put their difference aside to start making money together once again.

Ortiz has three wins, two defeats and one draw since he returned to action in 2006 from a brief hiatus. And those three victories have come at the expense of a past-his-prime, Ken Shamrock (twice), and a controversial split decision over Forrest Griffin.

Whether or not a surgically repaired back will help him return to form and make a serious run at the light heavyweight championship remains to be seen. His latest journey begins against “The Hammer.”

Coleman recently notched his first win inside the Octagon in more than 12 years with a unanimous decision over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100. "The Godfather of Ground and Pound" leveraged his strong wrestling background to takedown the "American Psycho" and keep him there, landing repeated blows from the top position.

The 44-year-old UFC Hall of Famer dropped his return to the Octagon to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" earlier this year. Coleman ended up on the wrong end of a third round technical knockout, which he felt was an unjust stoppage. It marked his first fight inside the Octagon since 1999.

Coleman has vowed that with the proper training and conditioning that he will only get better. He’ll get to put that training and cardio to the test against Ortiz, who has excelled in that department ever since gassing in a fight against Frank Shamrock almost a decade ago.

UFC 100 replay outdraws MLB, PGA and ‘Carano vs Cyborg’

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 11:59 AM PDT

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) once again countered live programming from a competing mixed martial arts promotion when it aired selected fights from UFC 100 on Spike TV last Saturday (Aug. 15 at 10 p.m. ET) — directly opposite the Strikeforce: “Carano vs Cyborg” event that aired live on Showtime.

The replay, headlined by the UFC heavyweight championship unification bout between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, drew a whopping two million viewers for a 1.8 rating in men 18-34, a 1.7 rating in men 18-49 and a 1.5 household rating.

The Showtime broadcast of Strikeforce: “Carano vs. Cyborg,” in comparison, averaged 576,000 viewers, with 856,000 tuning in for the night’s main event.

However, it isn’t exactly a level playing field, as Spike TV is a basic cable station available in approximately 98 million homes. Showtime, on the other hand, is a subscription-based premium cable channel that has approximately 21 million subscribers.

Zuffa’s July 11 event, available for free barely one month after airing live on pay-per-view, also outdrew Major League Baseball (MLB) on FOX as well as Golf’s PGA Championship on CBS in the advertiser-coveted demographic of men 18-34.

This latest news, of course, should come as no surprise since Zuffa has made a habit of counter programming in the past. The UFC went up against the Elite XC debut show on CBS in May 2008 with a tribute to perhaps the most popular mixed martial artist on the planet, Chuck Liddell, called "Ultimate Iceman."

They also hastily put together UFC Fight Night 14 to draw interest away from the debut of Affliction: "Banned" on PPV last July with a main event between Anderson "The Spider" Silva and James "The Sandman" Irvin.

For Affliction's second effort, "Day of Reckoning" on Jan. 24, the UFC answered with a replay of UFC 91: "Lesnar vs. Couture."

Strikeforce can be now be considered a major player in mixed martial arts with its signing of heavyweight free agent, Fedor Emelianenko, as well as its current cable and network television deals.

While UFC President Dana White has long since supported the efforts of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, he is now at war with "Strikefarce" since it entered the proverbial big stage.

Competition 101 (or perhaps “100″ in this case).

This battle’s just getting started.

Poke-gate: Florian camp accuses BJ Penn of fighting dirty

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 08:29 AM PDT

Props: Fighthype

Quoteworthy:

“There are a lot of things that happened during the [UFC 101] fight that you may or you may not have seen. Kenny got poked in the eye, which BJ is notorious for. He did it against Matt Hughes twice in one fight and once in their first fight. He did it against Georges St. Pierre in both fights. He was hitting behind the head all of the time. Kenny won’t say this, but I certainly will.”

Keith Florian, brother of former UFC lightweight number one contender Kenny Florian, discusses some of the alleged foul play from current 155-pound champ BJ Penn during his UFC 101 title defense against “KenFlo.” Kenny was submitted via rear naked choke in the fourth round but never really got into a groove in his second title fight since joining the UFC ranks in 2005. Was it the layoff that disrupted his riddum? Or did BJ have a hand (or finger) in making sure he “lost sight” of his title aspirations?
