Scott Coker: Nick Diaz vs Jay Hieron Strikeforce title fight ‘before the end of the year’ Posted: 16 Aug 2009 09:51 AM PDT
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker hasn’t let the drug testing fiasco deter him for moving forward with a championship bout between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron, indicating during last night’s “Carano vs. Cyborg” post-fight press conference that he will green light the welterweight title fight just as soon as Diaz obtains his license to fight from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). Diaz failed to report for his mandatory pre-fight drug test the week before the Aug. 15 event and was not cleared to compete; however, his camp is currently working with the CSAC to get the controversial star a license in time to fight by year’s end. Fortunately Jay Hieron held up his end of the bargain by defeating Diaz’ replacement, Jesse “JT Money” Taylor at Saturday’s Showtime event. |

Fedor Emelianenko shooting for November Strikeforce debut Posted: 16 Aug 2009 09:12 AM PDT Former PRIDE and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko is being considered for a November Strikeforce debut at an upcoming event that does not yet have a date or confirmed location. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker shared the news during last night’s “Carano vs. Cyborg” post-fight press conference. While an Internet rumor started last week threw former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez into the mix, Coker quickly dismissed the possibility and instead referred to his current stable of heavyweights that includes the undefeated Brett Rogers and Aug. 15 winner Fabricio Werdum. Current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is also under consideration pending the recovery of a hand injury. Emelianenko has become something of a mixed martial arts lightning rod after failing to come to terms with the UFC (twice), most notably back in July when Affliction MMA collapsed like a house of cards. “The Last Emperor,” under the direction of M-1 boss Vadim Finkelchtein, was gobbled up by the San Jose-based promotion after refusing a Zuffa offer that did not include co-promotion, effectively spoiling any chance of an eventual superfight with Octagon kingpin Brock Lesnar. The Russian can next be seen throwing hands with Gegard Mousasi in an exhibition sparring match at the upcoming M-1 Global: 'Breakthrough' event from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 28. Hopefully he doesn’t slip on a banana peel on the way to the ring or end up falling into an open manhole while crossing the streets of Kansas City. MMA fans are a fickle bunch and are quickly losing their patience after being saturated with Emelianenko-related news over the past month. Now it’s time for action. And a dominating win over a formidable opponent will go a long way in re-establishing his credibility as one of the best heavyweight fighters competing in the sport today. Here’s to hoping. |
