UFC 105: Dan Hardy vs Dong Hyun ‘Stun Gun’ Kim in the works for Nov. 14

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 04:06 AM PDT

Welterweights Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim are penciled in to collide at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to a South Korean news report.

Hardy is coming off perhaps the biggest win of his career — a razor thin split decision over Marcus Davis at UFC 99: “The Comeback” in June 2009. It was a super close call and one that had most mixed martial arts fans divided right down the middle.

Nonetheless, it was the third straight win for “The Outlaw” inside the Octagon and his sixth since a disqualification loss to Yoshiyuki Yoshida in late 2007. In fact, Hardy has won 11 of his last 12 fights, including a devastating first round knockout of Rory Markham and a split decision win over the venerable veteran Akihiro Gono.

The blooming British star has not had an easy road since his debut for the organization, and that difficult journey will continue against the South Korean judo player.

Kim scored a unanimous decision over Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist TJ Grant at UFC 100: “Lesnar vs. Mir 2″ just last month. The convincing victory over the Canadian was important because Kim had previously been involved in two close matches that could have gone either way.

He dropped a split decision to Karo Parisyan at UFC 94 earlier this year, which was later overturned to a no contest after “The Heat” tested positive for pain killers. And before that, Kim — who often trains at Wajyutsu Keisyukai in Japan — went the distance against Matt Brown in another close split decision, but this time in a winning effort.

Both fighters will likely want to keep this one out of the judges hands at all costs to avoid any and all controversy.

UFC 105 has yet to be officially announced by the promotion; therefore, it’s still unclear who will headline the show. To see how the card has been shaping up thus far be sure to hit up or event archive right here.

Michael Bisping hopes to make UFC 105 fight against Denis Kang ‘a night to remember’

“I may possibly be fighting Denis Kang at UFC 105…. Denis is a very experienced fighter who has fought, and beat some of the top names in the sport. I’m sure it would make for an exiting fight and we can make it a night to remember for the fans in Manchester. If your reading this Denis, good luck in training and I look forward to meeting you in Manchester.”

England’s-own, Michael Bisping, talks about his potential showdown against Denis Kang at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14. “The Count” is coming off perhaps one of the most memorable knockouts in UFC history, getting demolished by a crushing Dan Henderson right hand/flying forearm combination at UFC 100 last month. He was also on the winning end of perhaps one of MMA’s most controversial decision’s in recent memory when he squeaked by Matt Hamill at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” in Sept. 2007. He’s certainly had his fair share of nights to remember, but can he ensure that this one against Kang ends in his favor?

UFC 102: New and improved Keith Jardine ready to make a run to the top against Thiago Silva

“The winner’s still going to be top tier in the world and looking for a title fight, and fighting contenders, and the loser’s definitely going to drop off…. It’s just another fight, man. I’m fighting a really tough guy, a top-rated guy. I’m just in it for the fight, man. I don’t care about all that other stuff…. More than anything, not too many people have been fighting the quality of people that I’ve been fighting from fight to fight. And I have had a few holes in my game, and I feel like I’ve been improving. I think I’ve fixed a lot of those holes…. It’s a new and improved me, and it’s the start of a run for me to the top of the UFC. That’s the way I’m looking at it…. I’ve never been in a boring fight. It’s going to be another really exciting fight. … Fight of the Night-caliber fight.”

Keith Jardine talks about fighting the best in the talent-rich 205-pound class, including former champions, Chuck Liddell, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Wanderlei Silva and Forrest Griffin, as well as other tough guys such as Brandon Vera, Houston Alexander and Wilson Gouveia. As a result, “The Dean of Mean” has had a tough time earning a title shot — he has been unable to string together a consistent winning formula (he’s 4-3 against the competition). He’s up against another stiff test this weekend when he takes on the previously unbeaten and hard-hitting Thiago Silva (13-1) at UFC 102: “Couture vs. Nogueira” from the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. Can Jardine get over the hump and make a run at the division title or will Silva once again send him back to the end of the line?

UFC Quick Quote: Kenny Florian is ‘fired up,’ still wants BJs belt

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 03:48 PM PDT

"I'm still at the top of the division and in one or two fights I think I can put myself back into contention to fight for the belt again. In order to do that, I'm going to have to face some tough guys, but I'm motivated and excited with that possibility…. In no way, shape or form did (Keith) ever use [the eye poke allegation] as an excuse, and that's definitely not the reason I lost. I lost because B.J. was the better fighter that night, simple as that…. It's little things that I should have done better. For me, it's basically, 'stop talking and start doing.' I just want to get back to training and refine everything and just get back in the cage. I'm just motivated and fired up to fight someone right now."

– Former number one lightweight contender Kenny Florian talks to the Boston Herald about his submission loss to 155-pound champion BJ Penn at UFC 101: “Declaration” earlier this month. He’s eager to get back on the horse and start finishing more fights to earn another crack at the elusive title, which has so far alluded him twice (Florian lost to Sean Sherk for the vacant belt in 2006). He rattled of six consecutive wins to earn another opportunity opposite “The Prodigy,” but once again came up short. Will the third time be the charm for Florian … is he destined to be a “master” or just a “student?”

Sengoku 10: Antonio Silva possible for Sept. 23 return against Ron Sparks

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 08:18 AM PDT

Antonio Silva

It has been several weeks since the World Victory Road officials have named Antonio Silva as one of the participants in Sengoku 10. Now, the undefeated super-heavyweight prospect, Ron Sparks, has surfaced as his potential opponent.

The announcement of Silva-Sparks comes at the heel of the confirmation of a series of bouts slated for Sengoku 10 that feature Nick Thompson, Ryan Schultz, and Dan Hornbuckle amongst others.

Sengoku 10 will take place on September 23 at the Saitama Community Arena in Saitama, Japan.  It will air on HDNet in North America and is expected to see the MMA debut of 2004 Olympic judo silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi.

Silva last fought at Sengoku No Ran 2009 in January against Yoshihiro “Kiss” Nakao.  The bout ended in an anticlimactic fashion as Nakao injured his knees in the first round, earning Silva a victory via TKO.

He is currently on a five-fight winning streak during which he captured the heavyweight title in now defunct Elite XC by defeating Justin Eilers in July 2008.  His record stands at 12-1 and boasts ten wins via KO or TKO.

Ron Sparks, who fights out of Louisville, KY, is a super-heavyweight prospect with 5-0 record.  He will be stepping down to the heavyweight division for the first time when he faces Silva.  He has recently defeated a veteran fighter, Johnathan Ivey by unanimous decision in a Revolution Fighting League event in Hammond, IN.

He was also scheduled to fight tonight, August 22, against TC Shaw at a Vyper Fight League event in Louisville, KY.  However, the event has been canceled due to Shaw’s last-minute withdrawal.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com as more bouts for Sengoku 10 become finalized in the coming weeks.

Art of Fighting 4: Seth Petruzelli scores first round win in return fight

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 07:54 AM PDT

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 alum, Seth Petruzelli, finally returned to action last night after nearly a year-long layoff, picking up right where he left off.

Petruzelli scored a first round technical knockout over Chris Baten in the co-main event at Art of Fighting 4 from the University of South Florida's Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., according to The News-Press.

It was a stoppage with which Baten, and apparently the crowd, did not agree.

Here’s a snip:

"It was definitely a clean knock down but not a knockout. It caught me on the cheekbone with enough power to put me on my butt. But I wasn't seeing stars. I was in a scramble coming back up."

Regardless, the win stands — his third straight and first since hitting the MMA lotto with a 14-second stoppage of the previously undefeated YouTube.com street fighting legend Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: "Heat" in Oct. 2008.

For more on Art of Fighting 4, which aired live via online pay-per-view (PPV) on Aug. 28, head over to the promotion’s official Web site right here.
