Report: UFC prelim fights to air on Spike TV commercial-free Sept. 19

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 09:08 PM PDT

In an unprecedented marketing move, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has plans to televise the entire “Franklin vs. Belfort” preliminary card from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 19, according to the Orange County Register.

It’s expected to be two-hour uninterrupted block scheduled for Spike TV that will begin at 8 p.m. and lead into the pay-per-view (PPV) telecast at 10 p.m., which will be available for purchase at $44.95.

This good news, however, has not yet been announced by the promotion nor is it reflected on its official calendar of television programming. Hopefully, that will all change soon.

Currently, the promotion has eight fights booked for the UFC 103 prelims. Here’s what fans can expect to see on Spike TV:

155 lbs.: Efrain "Hecho en Mexico" Escudero (11-0) vs. Cole "Magrino" Miller (15-3)
155 lbs.: Jim Miller (14-2) vs. TBA
155 lbs.: Dan Lauzon (12-2) vs. Rafaello "Tractor" Oliveira (8-1)
170 lbs.: Paul Daley (21-8-2) vs. Brian Foster (10-3)
185 lbs.: Tomasz "The Gorilla" Drwal (16-2-1) vs. Drew "The Massacre" McFedries (8-5)
205 lbs.: Eliot "The Fire" Marshall (7-1) vs. Jason Brilz (17-1-1)
205 lbs.: Vladimir Matyushenko (22-4) vs. Igor Pokrajac (21-5)
155 lbs.: Rafael dos Anjos (11-4) vs. "Handsome" Matt Wiman (10-5)

UFC 103 will feature a main event between Rich "Ace" Franklin and Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort at a 195-pound catchweight. Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos.

In addition, Martin Kampmann will be out to put a "hit" on Mike Swick to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of UFC 103, beginning with the PPV telecast at 10 p.m. ET. In addition, we will deliver up-to-the-minute quick results of all the televised under card action.

With no titles on the line, and up against Floyd Mayweather Jr. taking on Juan Manuel Marquez in a 144-pound catchweight clash that same night, it appears that the promotion is pulling out all the stops to ensure that UFC 103 is a PPV success.

Shane Carwin ‘honored’ to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 106

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 07:50 PM PDT

Props: Shane-Carwin.com

Quoteworthy:

“I have verbally been offered the fight with Brock and I have verbally accepted this fight. My manager and the UFC are handling the the details. I am honored that the UFC has given me this opportunity. The fans of this sport are what makes MMA so great. I expect to be fighting at UFC 106 in November.”

Number one heavyweight title contender Shane Carwin shares his first public thoughts on challenging division champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. Carwin was expected to take on Cain Velasquez at UFC 104 on Oct. 24; however, the promotion today shifted gears and opted instead to put him up against someone his own size — Carwin and Lesnar are far and away the biggest competitors on the UFC roster. And they both have strong wrestling backgrounds. On paper, the fighters appear to be very evenly matched. However, Lesnar has dedicated himself to training mixed martial arts for the past few years. Meanwhile, Carwin still holds down a full-time job as an engineer at the North Weld County Water District in Colorado. So far, it hasn’t affected his performance inside the Octagon — he’s undefeated with three first round finishes that have lasted little more than three minutes combined. Can Carwin continue to dominate the competition with his real-world responsibilities or does he need to focus on training 100 percent to topple Lesnar?

Strikeforce Challengers: Tim Kennedy vs Zak Cummings set with Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos scratched

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 07:01 PM PDT

Tim Kennedy will meet Zak Cummings in a featured middleweight bout at the next Strikeforce Challengers event at the SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Sept. 25.

Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos was originally scheduled to take on Kennedy; however, a knee injury sustained in training forced the Brazilian out of the main event. The promotion today confirmed that the Kennedy-Cummings will still headline the show.

Kennedy recently opened up several eyes with a dominant performance in his most recent appearance, stopping Nick "The Goat" Thompson via second round technical knockout back in June. It was his second consecutive win for the Army veteran since losing to Jason Miller via unanimous decision at HDNet Fights: "Reckless Abandon" in Dec. 2007.

He’ll look to make three in a row against Cummings, and in the process, snap the undefeated fighter’s perfect 10-fight tear.

Cummings is perhaps best known for his split decision upset win over UFC veteran Terry Martin at XCF: “Rumble in Racetown” earlier this year. He most recently punched out Dominic Brown in the first round at an FM Productions event in Missouri three months ago.

Strikeforce Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today's top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

This event is slated to begin on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET (tape delayed on the west coast) on fight night.

UFC 104: Ben Rothwell vs Cain Velasquez booked for Oct. 24

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 11:53 AM PDT

On the heels of Shane Carwin being scratched from UFC 104 to challenge Brock Lesnar for the division title in November, MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) has learned that former IFL and Affliction heavyweight standout Ben Rothwell has agreed to step in for “The Engineer” versus Cain Velasquez on Oct. 24.

Rothwell is coming off a dominating technical knockout win over Chris Guillen at Adrenaline II back in Dec. 2008. Prior to that, "Big" was riding a career high 13-fight win streak before running into former UFC heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski, during the inaugural Affliction event in July 2008 .

Before the loss, he had defeated former UFC champion Ricco Rodriguez, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 standout Krzysztof Soszynski, Roy "Big Country" Nelson and others.

The Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS)-trained fighter was on course to throw hands with Chase Gormley at the same event however, the UFC quickly shuffled the deck after Carwin’s departure.

Velasquez is coming off the complete and utter destruction of Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 back on June 13. The talented wrestler out of American Kickboxing Academy pushed his perfect record to 6-0 in his first decision win after rattling off five straight technical knockout stoppages.

The experience and talent of Rothwell will provide him with perhaps his stiffest test to date.

UFC 104 will feature a main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. It’s expected that Velasquez will earn the next title shot with a win pending the outcome of UFC 106.

UFC 106: Shane Carwin will face Brock Lesnar on Nov. 21

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 10:04 AM PDT

Undefeated heavyweight behemoth Shane Carwin has been pulled from his Oct. 24 bout against fellow fast-rising prospect Cain Velasquez to fight current champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Rumors began to circulate last night after MMAmadness.com broke the news and MMAmania.com has since been able to confirm the big shake up.

Carwin and Velasquez were originally paired up for UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., to determine a number one contender for Lesnar’s title.

With Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueira having already committed to the main event of UFC 102, there were some concerns within the organization that a suitable opponent would not be found for Lesnar by year’s end following his destruction of Frank Mir at UFC 100.

There was also the possibility of eliminating two major prospects within the division in a very short period of time had the winner of Carwin vs. Velasquez gone on to be defeated by the champ.

Velasquez will still compete at UFC 104 as scheduled opposite Ben Rothwell, and with a victory, would likely face the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin at some point in 2010.

UFC 106 is expected to feature MMA elder statesman Mark “The Hammer” Coleman as he welcomes the return of the surgically repaired “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz in a 205-pound clash.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing fight card as it becomes available.
