UFC Quick Quote: Randy Couture has no punch

Posted: 22 Aug 2009 10:15 PM PDT

"We think that Couture will fight standing against him, and Rodrigo thinks that too. Rodrigo is 100% prepared standing. I always said that this fight were good to Rodrigo, because Couture has no punch to knock him out, and Rodrigo boxes better than him… Rodrigo is prepared in the ground too and will work to submit, because Rodrigo has everything to submit him. Our strategy is stay away from the fence.”

– Luiz Alves, the Muay Thai coach for Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira, tells Tatame.com that his fighter is set to stand and trade with Randy Couture at UFC 102 because the “Natural” doesn’t pack much heat on his feet. He may be right — Couture doesn’t have a clean knockout on his resume in 25 career fights. But that hasn’t necessarily stopped him from handling (and defeating) the big dogs, including Tim Sylvia, Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz, Pedro Rizzo and Kevin Randleman, among others. Will he add “Big Nog” to that list on Aug. 29? For the record: Nogueira has one knockout, and just one technical knockout, in 37 career fights … hmmm.

UFC 106: Shane Carwin explains his ‘hate’ for Brock Lesnar …

Posted: 22 Aug 2009 12:38 PM PDT

… to SI.com, and it’s all about RESPECT (or lack thereof):

“I think hate is a strong word, but yeah, I hate what he did after UFC 100. I hate that he disrespected the greatest sporting fans in the world and I can’t wait to fight him. … Really it comes down to respect and I do not think that he respects the sport or the fans of this sport. He may be well known, but fame does not equal respect.”

Will Lesnar find out what it means to Carwin at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 or will it be the other way around … predictions, Maniacs?

Vitor Belfort: Anderson Silva is ‘a fight I wouldn’t like to do to’

Quoteworthy:

“The problem is that Anderson has too much people around him. I like him, I still like him after everything he said. I still cheer for him, but I think he has a lot of people around him. I'm an employee, he's an employee too, we can't pick our fights. Of course that's a fight I wouldn't like to do to, I like him a lot, no matter what he says.”

Vitor Belfort isn’t that high on an opportunity to challenge Anderson Silva for his 185-pound crown. He’ll do it, but it’s not an ideal situation to compete against a fellow Brazilian and someone who he considers a friend. However, Silva has remarked that Belfort is not his friend, but someone who he respects and is willing to fight without reservation if called upon. “The Phenom” is the latest addition to the UFC middleweight class and someone who company president, Dana White, would like to see earn a title shot to one day challenge “The Spider.” Before that can happen, however, both fighters need to take care of other business — Belfort is set to battle Rich Franklin next month and Silva is penciled in to take on Dan Henderson before year’s end. Are Belfort and Silva on a collision course, whether they like it or not?

Spike TV announces UFC 103 prelim fights to air commercial-free Sept. 19

Posted: 22 Aug 2009 07:35 AM PDT

Spike TV recently confirmed that it will indeed televise the “Franklin vs. Belfort” preliminary card from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 19.

However, just a “portion” — not the whole magilla — will air commercial-free on fight night.

Accordingly, fans will be treated to one hour (not two) of uninterrupted mixed martial arts competition, beginning at 9 p.m. and leading into the pay-per-view (PPV) telecast at 10 p.m., which will be available for purchase at $44.95.

Here’s a snip from Kevin Kay, president, Spike TV, on the unprecedented decision:

"Providing an action-packed UFC pay-per-view, live and commercial free, to our viewers on both coasts, further illustrates Spike TV and the UFC's commitment to its fans.”

Currently, the promotion has eight fights booked for the UFC 103 prelims.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 winner Efrain Escudero will headline the under card action opposite TUF 5 alum Cole Miller (15-3). And the hard-hitting middleweight clash between Tomasz "The Gorilla" Drwal and Drew "The Massacre" McFedries is also guaranteed to make the Spike TV broadcast.

UFC 103 will feature a main event between Rich "Ace" Franklin and Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort at a 195-pound catchweight. Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos.

In addition, Martin Kampmann will be out to put a "hit" on Mike Swick to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title.
