Dustin Hazelett vs Karo Parisyan in the works for UFC 106 on Nov. 21

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 07:58 PM PDT

The rise of Brazilian jiu-jitsu welterweight specialist Dustin Hazelett to the top of the 170-pound contender ladder could finally resume when he takes on Octagon veteran Karo Parisyan at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21, according to MMAWeekly.com.

“McLovin” has been out of action since late 2008 because of a serious knee injury that he sustained earlier this year training for a fight against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 alum, Ben Saunders, at UFC 96 back in March. As a result, Hazelett was forced out of the 170-pound contest and went under the knife to repair his damaged joint.

The operation was apparently a success and now the surging 23-year-old — who has two straight (and super slick) armbar submission victories over Tamdan McCrory and Josh Burkman, respectively, to his credit — is ready to feel “The Heat.”

Parisyan will return from a nine-month suspension dished out by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after testing positive for several major painkillers following his controversial split decision win over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on Jan. 31, 2009.

Under the terms of the ruling, "The Heat" was fined 40 percent of his purse ($32,000) and his win over the Korean was ruled a "No Contest.”

Prior to the positive test, he Armenian-born Judo player battled a nervous disorder, as well as injuries, which forced him out of a match against Yoshiyuki Yoshida less than 24 hours before showtime back in Sept. 2008.

By the time fight night rolls around, it will be more than two years since the former number one division contender tasted victory inside the Octagon — a unanimous decision over Ryo Chonan at UFC 78: “Validation” in Nov. 2007.

UFC 106 is expected to feature a titanic main event between undisputed heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar putting his title on the line against the equally enormous Shane Carwin. In addition, MMA elder statesman Mark "The Hammer" Coleman will welcome the surgically repaired "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz back to the organization in a 205-pound clash.

UFC 104: ‘Machida vs Rua’ announced for Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 07:29 PM PDT

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today made the formal announcement that it is “going back to Cali” on Oct. 24.

UFC 104 from the Staples Center is Los Angeles, Calif., is now official, featuring the first title defense for undefeated light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida against fellow Brazilian Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of the evening.

Here’s a snip from company president Dana White on the 205-pound match up:

"It's been two years since the UFC was in Southern California and we knew we had to bring something special for our return to the capital of mixed martial arts. Lyoto Machida captured the imagination of fight fans with his knockout of Rashad Evans, and while he seems unbeatable right now, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua not only has the tools to beat any 205-pounder in the world, but he's coming off a knockout of Chuck Liddell in his last fight, so his confidence is sky-high. This has the potential to be one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights ever."

In addition, the promotion confirmed that rising talent Cain Velasquez and veteran Ben Rothwell will “wage war” in a super-sized heavyweight showdown.

Velasquez was previously booked to face Shane Carwin in a number one title contender eliminator match; however, “Big Ben” — who will be making his Octagon debut — was inserted recently to free up Carwin to challenge Brock Lesnar for the division title in November.

WEC 43: ‘Cerrone vs Henderson’ postponed; Rescheduled for Oct. 10

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 06:34 PM PDT

WEC 43: "Cerrone vs. Henderson," which was scheduled to take place at the Covelli Center in Youngstown, Ohio, on Sept. 2, has been postponed.

The Zuffa-owned promotion today made the surprise announcement, indicating that an injury to main event participant, Ben Henderson, forced the card to be rescheduled for Oct. 10 “at a venue to be announced at a later date.”

That more than likely means that “The Buckeye State” may no longer be the location when all is said and done and a trip back to the familiar confines of Las Vegas, Nevada, could now be in the works. Expect an official announcement to be shortly. In the meantime, tickets will be refunded.

The good news is that the entire WEC 43 fight card will remain intact.

"Cerrone vs. Henderson" will feature an interim lightweight championship main event between Greg Jackson pupil, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, and fast rising WEC contender Ben “Smooth” Henderson.

In addition, former lightweight number one contender Rich “Cleat” Crunkilton will return to the cage after finally healing from various injuries, which have kept him out of action since March of 2008. He’ll square off with undefeated prospect Dave Jansen in the co-featured bout of the night.

It’s not a star-studded line up, which perhaps made the decision easier for promotion officials to change things up at the last minute. There’s no telling if that lack of starpower negatively impacted ticket sales in Ohio. In addition, WECs home network, Versus, could possibly be dropped from satellite cable provider DirecTV in the near future if a deal is not struck to extend their current deal.

In short, there is a lot going on behind the scenes in addition to the Henderson injury that could contributed to this latest development.

K-1 legend Ray Sefo vs Kevin Jordan booked for Strikeforce Challengers on Sept. 25

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 06:33 PM PDT

NEW YORK (August 24, 2009) — K-1 legend and five-time world kickboxing champion, Ray "Sugarfoot" Sefo (1-0), will make his STRIKEFORCE mixed martial arts (MMA) debut when he takes on Kevin "The Shaman" Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight contest on the SHOWTIME televised portion of the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Tulsa, Oklahoma's SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, Sept. 25.

The 38-year-old Sefo, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds, boasts the highest KO percentage in K-1's 16 year history. In 2007, he relocated from his native New Zealand to Las Vegas, Nev., and adopted Randy "The Natural" Couture's Xtreme Couture camp as his new training ground.

A Muay Thai stylist known for his punishing leg kicks and a steel chin, Sefo has made eight trips to the K-1 "World Grand Prix Finals," an annual, year-end tournament that pits the world's top eight heavyweight kickboxers against one another in a single-elimination tournament completed over the course of one night.

During a 14-year professional kickboxing career, he has conquered a number of fellow all-time greats, including three-time World Grand Prix Finals" tournament champion, Peter Aerts; two-time K-1 tournament winner, Jerome LeBanner; and former World Boxing Federation champion and three-time world kickboxing champion, Mike Bernardo.

In his sole MMA appearance, Sefo stopped Min Soo Kim with a high kick in the second round (:30) of their K-1 "Hero's 2" matchup in Japan on July 6, 2005.

Also 38 years of age, Jordan is a nine-year veteran of MMA who has made two appearances in UFC competition. In his last effort, the 6 foot 3 inch, 245-pound Jordan earned a unanimous decision victory over MMA pioneer and UFC 2 runner up Patrick Smith, in Salem, New Hampshire, on July 31, 2009.

Born in Alabama, Jordan recently move to Cortland, N.Y., from Columbus, Georgia, where he spent nearly 10 years training United States Army personnel stationed at nearby Fort Benning in the military martial arts system called Modern Army Combatives.

In the main event, American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) will face off with fellow rising star, unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-0), at middleweight (185 pounds).

SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8:00 p.m. The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include up to five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

WEC champion Brian Bowles to throw out ceremonial first pitch for Atlanta Braves

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 02:02 PM PDT

Newly-minted WEC bantamweight kingpin Brian Bowles has been tapped to toss out the ceremonial first pitch tomorrow night (Aug. 25) at Turner Field when the Atlanta Braves play host to the San Diego Padres.

The 29-year-old is a native of Athens, Ga., where he trains out of The Hardcore Gym under Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts Rory and Adamn Singer. Athens is about an hour outside of Atlanta.

Here’s what the champ had to say:

“It is an honor that my favorite team wants to have me out to the ballpark. The Braves have a long history of being a world-class organization. I’m excited to bring the WEC belt to Turner Field.”

Bowles recently captured the WEC 135-pound title by shocking the world at WEC 42 earlier this month with a first round knockout victory over the man previously believed to be the top bantamweight mixed martial artist on the planet, Miguel “Angel” Torres.

In addition to Torres, the undefeated fighter now holds wins over Damacio “The Angel of Death” Page, Will Ribeiro, Charlie Valencia, Marcus “Louro” Galvao and others.

It’s believed that Dominick Cruz earned number one contender status with his win over Joseph Benavidez in the co-main event of the same card, meaning he’ll likely be Bowles’ first title challenger. However, Bowles suffered a fractured hand in his win over Torres, which could force him to the sidelines for up to six months.

So don’t expect any sliders from the mound tomorrow night.

Hopefully, Bowles makes a speedy recovery and is back in the cage sooner rather than later. But for now it appears he’ll just have to enjoy the other perks that come along with being the champ.

MMA Quick Quote: Ben Henderson will see Donald Cerrone at WEC 43

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 12:57 PM PDT

"I have recently had surgery to correct my vision so I have been enjoying the ability to actually see my opponents. Prior to my eye surgery, I used to memorize the seeing-eye chart to get through the vision test, but I was unable to really see before. The WEC gloves being blue really helped me out, letting me see the blue blur to avoid punches. In my first WEC fight, I missed a kick and my opponent was right in front of me. That wasn’t nervous energy as some might have thought. That was my vision problem putting me at risk. In this camp, I have tried to balance my awareness with my newfound vision."

– Top-ranked WEC lightweight contender Ben “Smooth” Henderson talks to FightLedger.com about getting corrective surgery on his eyes prior to his interim championship fight with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at WEC 43. “Smooth” is undefeated (2-0) under the WEC banner, which includes a second round submission win over Anthony Njokuani and a first round technical knockout win over Shane Roller. He has not lost a fight since 2006. It’s interesting that he’s been so successful without being able to even “see his opponents.” It should be fun to see what kind of difference this new found vision makes on fight night. Will it be enough to help him become the next WEC lightweight champ?

Jake Shields vs Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller to determine Strikeforce interim middleweight champion

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 12:55 PM PDT

Former Elite XC welterweight champion Jake Shields and former ICON Sport middleweight champion Jason “Mayhem” Miller will battle it out for the interim Strikeforce middleweight title sometime soon.

No firm date or location is known at this time. Miller made the announcement in a recent forum post over at MyFightTeam.com.

Here’s the snip:

“I’m set to take on Jake Shields for the middleweight championship of the world in Strikeforce.”

It’s expected that the winner of the 185-pound contest between Shields and Miller will challenge reigning Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le later this year to unify the belts.

Le is currently tied up with several Hollywood-related projects outside the cage that have kept him out of action for more than one year. He expects to return to competition by the end of 2009 or early 2010.
