UFC 104: Sean Sherk really is hurt …

Posted: 10 Sep 2009 01:55 AM PDT

… and is not dodging random tests for steroids. And now he’s even releasing personal medical test results to prove his innocence:

sherk_mri_results

From Sherdog.com:

"I'm not dodging a drug test. I just took a drug test three months ago. I know I'm going to get drug tested. I've been drug tested probably more than any other fighter in the world…. It's so frustrating. I feel like I've done so much to prove that I haven't done anything wrong. Even with my case –- I went above and beyond to try to prove that I didn't take anything."

Hopefully, this ends all the “controversy” that Sherk pulled a Nick Diaz and “skipped” a California State Athletic Commission (CSAC)-ordered drug screening prior to his 155-pound match up against Gleison Tibau at UFC 104: “Machida vs. Shogun” at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.

Is that so hard to believe?

DREAM 11: Bob Sapp vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou for ‘Super Hulk Tournament’ with Gegard Mousasi hurt

Posted: 09 Sep 2009 09:25 PM PDT

sappJapanese MMA and K-1 attraction Bob Sapp has been called up to replace the injured Gegard Mousasi for the “Super Hulk Tournament” featured at DREAM 11 opposite Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou on October 6, according to MMAWeeekly.

"The Dreamcatcher" was forced to withdraw from his semifinal bout against “The African Assassin” after suffering a shoulder injury during training, paving the way for “The Beast” to return from a first round exit at the hands of Ikuhisa Minowa to get another shot at super-hulkdom.

Prior to getting tapped out by “The Punk” at DREAM 9 back in May, Sapp was pounded into submission by former WWE star Bobby Lashley in their “Ultimate Chaos” main event on June 27.

The former NFL offensive lineman is a bonafide star in "The Land of the Rising Sun," however, that popularity has not carried over to the United States. In fact, the 6'5" 350-pound Sapp dropped his United States debut against 6′11" 330-pound South African, Jan "The Giant" Nortje (2-5), via embarrassing first round technical knockout under the Strikeforce banner last year.

Sapp’s only win in his last four attempts was against a character from a Japanese anime show, "Kinniku Mantaro," at Fields Dynamite!! in Japan on New Year's Eve 2008.

A win over the hard-hitting Sokoudjou could go a long way in keeping him employed.

In addition to the bout between Sokoudjou and Sapp, "Super Hulk" will also pit Hong-Man Choi and Ikuhisa Minowa in the other semifinal match. DREAM 11 will also feature the semifinal and final rounds of the featherweight tourney.

Daniel Cormier: Strikeforce signs two-time Olympian; Debut set for Tulsa on Sept. 25

NEW YORK (Sept. 9, 2009) — Two-time United States Olympic wrestling team member and former NCAA Division I national championship runner up Daniel Cormier will make his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut at the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, September 25.

Cormier (0-0) will face an opponent that has yet to be determined on the live SHOWTIME televised portion of the first-ever STRIKEFORCE card in the state of Oklahoma.

“I think it’s an honor to be fighting for one of the top organizations in the world,” said Cormier, who celebrated his 30th birthday on March 20.

Since graduating from Oklahoma State University (OSU) with a degree in sociology in 2001, Cormier has continued to follow his passion for playing human chess on the mat, earning a place on the 2004 and 2008 United States Olympic wrestling teams.

“Making the first Olympic team was like a culmination of everything I had worked for,” said Cormier, who took fourth place in The Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 2004, but was unable to compete in the 2008 games due to injury. “I’m a guy who really wants to make his mother proud and this made her so proud. I could see the joy and pride in her.”

His storied run as an amateur wrestler began in high school where Cormier was a three-time state champion in his native Louisiana, compiling a remarkable 101-9 record over four years of competition.

Before joining OSU’s powerhouse squad that has won a remarkable 34 national wrestling championships since its first season in 1914, Cormier stopped off at Colby Community College where he captured the junior college national championship two years in a row. His unyielding commitment to the sport stems from the fortitude it has added to his character, according to Cormier.

“Wrestling’s a sport that teaches you how to be strong physically and mentally,” explained Cormier. “It really molds you and makes you take responsibility for your actions. If you don’t train hard, it’s going to be you out there getting embarrassed.”

Cormier recently relocated to San Jose, Calif., in order to train at the famed American Kickboxing Academy, also home to STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight (155 pounds) Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson and MMA superstars Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, amongst others.

Of his decision to step into the cage, Cormier said, “I haven’t done anything since the Olympics and that competitor fire in me started to build and build last year. When I started feeling that, I started pursuing all avenues.”

In the main event on September 25, American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) of Fayetteville, North Carolina will face unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-0) of Springfield, Missouri in a middleweight (185 pounds) contest. K-1 legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0), who hails from New Zealand and fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada, will take on Alabama-born Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight match.

Budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (5-0) of St. Louis, will face his sternest test to date when he meets former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw” Light (4-8) of Huntington Beach, California in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight.

Amongst the Oklahomans scheduled to appear on the card are Tulsa rivals Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-0) and Thomas Longacre (4-0), who will put their unbeaten records on the line against each other.

SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8 p.m. The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include up to five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

UFC 107: Kenny Florian vs Clay Guida rebooked for Dec. 12

Posted: 09 Sep 2009 11:55 AM PDT

florian-guida-3

UFC lightweight standouts Kenny Florian (11-4) and Clay Guida (25-10) have been scratched from their scheduled bout at  UFC 106 in Las Vegas and rebooked for UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee on December 12 according to ESPN’s MMA Live.

The move was likely done to help bolster the latter card after the departure of the fighter formerly known as Quniton “Rampage” Jackson.

It was learned earlier this week that “B.A. Baracus” will miss his main card fight opposite Rashad Evans to star in the upcoming “A-Team” remake and is expected to be out of action until early 2010.

While his absence should be considered a disappointment, the addition of Florian vs. Guida will certainly help soften the blow.

"Ken Flo" recently took lightweight champion BJ Penn into the championship rounds earlier this month in the main event of UFC 101: "Declaration" before getting submitted for the first time in his career by the jiu-jitsu "master" late in the fourth round.

However, during that fight, Florian continued to demonstrate the reason he is — and has been — one of the most improved 155-pound fighters in the world over the last three years. He hung right there with the champ — who is the top lightweight fighters in the sport today — for much of the contest.

The 33-year old previously fought for the UFC title one other time, falling to Sean Sherk by unanimous decision in a battle for the vacant strap back at UFC 64: "Unstoppable" in late 2006.

Between those two title fight appearances, the Boston-area native put together an impressive six-fight win streak over many of the toughest fighters in the division, including Joe Lauzon, Din Thomas, Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson.

Florian has already requested he get right back into the thick of things — and they don't come much tougher than Clay Guida.

"The Carpenter" has only compiled a record of (5-4) since joining the UFC at the beginning of 2007, but that includes four action-packed split decisions and an opponent list with names like Tyson Griffin (split decision loss), Roger Huerta (late round technical knockout after being ahead on the scorecards), Marcus Aurelio (split decision win), Mac Danzig (unanimous decision win), Nate Diaz (split decision win), Diego Sanchez (split decision loss) and Din Thomas (controversial unanimous decision loss).

Basically, he's fought and performed well against a good number of the division's best competition, including current number one contender Diego Sanchez at TUF 9 Finale, which is certainly a candidate for "Fight of the Year" in 2009

Like Florian, Guida seems to get better with every fight. And he never backs down from an opponent. Both guys coming off big time losses, so there's going to be a lot on the line when these two face off in late November.

It, too, has all the makings for another "Fight of the Year" candidate.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion BJ Penn defending his title against number one division contender Diego Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

Urijah Faber joins ‘Cyborg’ Santos at ADCC September event

Posted: 09 Sep 2009 11:32 AM PDT

Perhaps the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world — the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) — recently rounded out its Submission Wrestling World Championships 65.9 kg weight class by adding former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber, according to GracieMag.com.

“The California Kid” joins Strikeforce women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (+60kg), Luanna Alzuguir (-60kg) and Gregor Gracie (-77kg) as newly-announced participants for the September event.

The ADCC championships are hosted every two years in different locations, with the 2009 tournaments taking place in Barcelona, Spain from September 25-27 at the Pavelló Municipal Esports de Badalona. The competition is designed to crown the top grappling and submissions fighters in the world.

The rules are pretty simple. The object is to submit your opponent with either a choke, an arm lock (shoulder, wrist, arm, etc.) or a leg lock (knee, ankle, etc.)

Each qualifying match is 10 minutes long with the championship in each division being 20 minutes. If at the end of that time there is not a finish by submission, the match will be judged on a point system. If the score is tied there will be a 5 minute overtime period. If the score is still tied after that, the winner will be decided by a judge’s decision.

The point system is similar to any other grappling tournament. Takedowns are worth either 2 or 4 points, 4 if the fighter scoring the takedown lands past the guard. When on the ground, obtaining the full mount position is worth 2 points. Taking your opponents back with hooks will get you 3 points. Passing your opponents guard scores 3 points. A knee on your opponents stomach gets you 2 points, and clean sweeps equal 4 points.

This will be Faber’s second time competing in the ADCC championships — and his encore performance will not be any easier. The other 15 competitors in the 66 kg and under division will include reigning champion and WEC veteran Rani Yahya, Jeff Curran, Kouhei Yasumi, Rafael Mendes, Nicolas Renier, Timo-Juhani Hirvikangas, Ryan Hall, David Marinakis, Jayson Patino, Leo Viera, Rubens Charles, Baret Yoshida, Jeff Glover, Hiroshi Nakamura and Justin Rader.

The list of winners coming out of the other divisions in the 2007 championships, which were held in New Jersey, include Robert Drysdale, Fabricio Werdum, Alexandre Ribeiro, Demian Maia, and Marcelo Gracie. Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi and other top mixed martial artists have long been rumored to be participating in this event as well.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on the ADCC as it’s announced.
