Mirko Cro Cop: ‘Maybe I should’ve quit after I won’ Pride FC Open Weight Grand Prix in 2006

Quoteworthy:

“Maybe the ones who have said that I’m done are right. Obviously, I can’t break my mental block in the Octagon. Besides, I’ve been training like a spartan for 20 years now — my body is worn out. The years caught up to me, I’ve been worn out…. [Junior dos Santos] won that fight and would have won it by decision. Simply put, he is younger, more hungry, more aggressive. He wanted to win a lot more…. The mat was slippery like glass. I almost fell down trying to do the left high kick. But I’m not looking for an alibi. This was not the performance the public would pay for. I don’t feel the hunger anymore. I started playing it safe, I’m not ready to take risks. I would like to thank everybody that supported me and stood by me and everyone who helped me to prepare for this fight. I’ve been living a military life for 20 years now. Getting up at 6 a.m. and having physically challenging task up to 8 p.m. I want a normal life. I’m entering a cage and thinking about fishing in Privlaka. You can’t win that way. Maybe I should’ve quit after I won the open weight grand prix.”

Legendary mixed martial arts fighter, Mirko Cro Cop, reflects on his submission (verbal) loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. He was beaten to the punch, and pretty much beat up, in what essentially turned out to be a striking match for two-plus rounds. The Croatian waved off the Brazilian in the third after eating a brutal knee to the face that wiped out his vision. It marked his third loss inside the Octagon in five attempts — a far cry from the world beater who was scalping his opponents just three years ago under the Pride FC banner. In fact, he has not defeated a top-level fighter he made Josh Barnett quit at “Final Conflict Absolute,” which earned him the Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Championship. Prior to the loss to dos Santos, Cro Cop signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, saying he wanted to compete as often as possible and make one final run at heavyweight glory. It’s too early to tell, but could these remarks signal the end of the road of Cro Cop’s long and distinguished professional career, which dates back to the mid 1990s?

MMAmania announces UFC 103 Dethrone Royalty contest winners

MMAmania.com is proud to announce the grand prize winner of our UFC 103 Dethrone Royalty-sponsored contest give-a-way, Rob White.

Rob was just one second off the mark, predicting that Josh Koscheck would finish Frank Trigg via technical knockout at 1:24 of round one in their welterweight showdown last night from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The official time of the stoppage, which “Twinkle Toes” today agreed was fair after watching the replay (he was clearly upset when it happened), was 1:25.

Nice work, Rob. You make Nostradumbass look even dumber.

Rob walks away with a signed Koscheck walkout tee from Dethrone Royalty (see image below), as well as a box of other free swag.

But he isn’t alone.

Several other MMAmania readers out of the thousands upon thousands of entries that I had to sift through this morning (thanks for the support and participation everyone) were eerily as close. We’ll send them shirts (unsigned), too.

Here they are:

Greg Manco: Kos defeats Trigg via TKO at 1:23 in Round 1

Govind: KOS defeats TRIGG via TKO in round 1 at 1:22

Chad Hardin: Kos defeats Trigg via 2nd round TKO at 1:25 mark (wrong round, right time. Still impressive in my book).

Rob, Greg, Govind and Chad — be on the lookout from the MMAmania.com team. We want to get your stuff in the mail as soon as possible.

Thanks again for everyone who participated. And thanks to Dethrone Royalty for making this all possible. We’ll be back in October giving away more free stuff as Cain Velasquez gets ready to step inside the cage opposite Ben Rothwell at UFC 104 on Oct. 24.

Check out Koscheck's walkout t-shirt below. If you want to see more Dethrone Royalty gear click here.

UFC Quick Quote: Junior Dos Santos is now a senior ranking heavyweight

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 09:25 AM PDT

“Dos Santos is no joke. He hits hard, and he’s been knocking people out. [UFC 103] was a big night for him that definitely put him on the map now. He’s in the mix.”

– UFC President Dana White marvels at the continued progress of Junior Dos Santos during last night’s UFC 103 post-fight presser, after the Brazilian slugger cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns with a convincing, three round drubbing of former PRIDE star Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on Sept. 19 in Dallas. “Cigano” is now 3-0 in the Octagon with three straight TKO finishes. No question the Nogueira disciple will be looking for his fourth — the question is, against who? Fantasy matchmakers, do your thing.

Fighter’s fighter: Paul Daley took care of business against Martin Kampmann at UFC 103

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 09:24 AM PDT

I’m happy to be fighting for the UFC. I’m a fighter’s fighter, I’ll fight whoever. I proved that by stepping in for Kampmann. I don’t care who stands in front of me. I’m just gonna be the same fighter, and go out there to finish people. I just wanted to make a statement on my UFC debut. Obviously getting a chance to fight with Martin Kampann was quite big. Me and my team were always confident that I was gonna do business and I did.

–- UFC newcomer Paul Daley reacts to finishing Martin Kampmann in his Octagon debut at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. The heavy-handed 26-year-old vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after Mike Swick withdrew from the upcoming event — but will a knockout over "The Hitman" be enough to get him a one-way ticket to Lord St. Pierre? Or will the likes of Swick, Koscheck and Hughes have something to say about the future of "Semtex?"

Despite no date for Evans vs. Jackson, Dana White no longer on a ‘Rampage’ over A-Team movie

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 09:09 AM PDT

I guess UFC President Dana White pitied the fool after all.

During the post fight press conference for UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas, White confirmed that he and Quinton Jackson are on amicable terms, despite the fact that “Rampage” postponed a pending light heavyweight grudge match with Rashad Evans at UFC 107.

Jackson was cast as “B.A. Baracus” in the upcoming remake of “The A-Team,” currently filming in Vancouver on a tentatively scheduled six-week commitment, effectively preventing him from being fully prepared to compete in front of his hometown crowd (Memphis) for the first time ever inside the Octagon.

White blasted the former light heavyweight champion for bailing on the bout, which was understandable considering the entire season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 was built around his pending showdown with “Sugar” on December 12.

The two recently managed to put their verbal spat on the back-burner for the time being to try and figure out where they go from here. Jackson is still game, but don’t expect to see him before Spring 2010.

From White:

“We kind of made up. We’re going to figure it out. He wants the Rashad fight. He’s in Vancouver doing this movie. It is what it is. Now we just have to figure out when. We’ll see what happens. [A-Team] was supposed to be done right around December. Now he’s saying that they have makeup dates and stuff like that, so he couldn’t even fight in February.”

With Jackson now scratched, UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion BJ Penn defending his title against number one division contender Diego Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com in the coming weeks for more information and a possible date for Jackson’s return to the fight game.

Dana White: Vitor Belfort is ready to fight Anderson Silva

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 07:45 AM PDT

“The question that I had coming into this fight was, ‘What Vitor were we gonna see? The explosive Vitor that wants to get somebody hurt, who goes right after them, or the Vitor that lays back and couldn’t pull the trigger? He pulled the trigger tonight, and as soon as he hurt [Franklin], he went right in for the kill. Vitor is a 185-pound fighter, that’s his weight division. To be honest with you, the way that the last two fights happened with Marquardt and Henderson against Anderson Silva, I think it would be better to see them fight each other, and the winner of that become the next contender. I think Vitor’s ready. I think Vitor’s ready to fight Anderson Silva.”

– UFC President Dana White sounds off during the UFC 103 post fight press conference on the future of Vitor Belfort in the middleweight division — specifically his place in line for the 185-pound crown, currently held by fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva. “The Phenom” is coming off a first round destruction of former division champ Rich Franklin on Sept. 19 in Dallas. The stoppage — coupled with his wins in Affliction — were enough to convince White that “The Old Vitor” is back and ready to face “The Spider.” But was it enough to convince the fans? Opinions please.

Floyd Mayweather defeats Juan Manuel Marquez — and nearly puts Dana White to sleep

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 04:15 AM PDT

From the Zuffa boss:

“It sucked just like I thought it would, just like I knew it would. It was a horrendous. It went to a 12-round boring decision.”

Any MMA fans catch the replay — or blow off UFC 103 altogether to watch “Money” cash in on his size advantage? State your case.
