Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson: ‘I’m done fighting; I’m hanging it up’

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 05:33 PM PDT

UFC 71 Rampage Jackson light heavyweight champion

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson drops a power bomb via his personal Web site:

“The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them … this movie role came about that I have been trying to get for over a year & as soon as I found out I was close to getting it, I called Dana right away & asked to push the Memphis fight back just a month or so. I told him what this movie role meant to me. I told him that I used to bond with my father watching the tv show as a kid when my parents where still married & it represents the memories I had with my father when we lived together. My dad became an alcohalic & addicted to drugs & we grew apart. But after my dad got his life back together, I was so proud of my dad & I told him I would always take care of him in the future & make him proud of me. My dad & I are still very big fans of the show & I am basically doing this for the childhood memories I had spending time in front of the tv with my dad. Dana went on the internet & mocked me because of that & I still did nothing. Dana & I finally talked & we made up & then after that he went back on the internet & said some bullshit & he was talking bad about the movie when information is not even supposed to be released & talking about payments which is not even true could really hurt my future acting career, which could very well last longer than my fighting career. I’m not like Randy Couture. My body has been getting so many different injuries that I wont be able to fight until my forties & neither do I want to fight that long. So I feel like my second career could be in jeopardy.. so I’m done fighting. I’ve been getting negative reviews from the dumb ass fans that don’t pay my bills or put my kids though college. So I’m hanging it up. I’m gonna miss all my loyal fans but hopefully they’ll follow me to my new career & I will gain more loyal fans along the way. & all you hater fans out there can kiss my big black hairy ass! & anybody that don’t like what I just said can come try to kick my ass! I still feel the UFC is a great organization and I felt like I was very loyal to them but they didn’t respect my loyalty but I wish the UFC the best. I did a lot of things for them. I wish no bad blood between us but I have kids & a family back in Memphis to provide for & thats all that matters to me!”

Wow … speechless.

Rampage also adds that company president Dana White promised him a title shot against Lyoto Machida after coaching opposite Rashad Evans on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF); however, White flipped the script and booked him against “Sugar” anyway.

Is this “bad attitude” just a cry for attention or could Jackson really be serious?

Let’s tread lightly until we hear official word from White and/or other UFC executives.

Nonetheless, sound off, Maniacs. Let’s hear your take.

UFC 103 prelim fights attract 1.4 million viewers on Spike TV

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 04:03 PM PDT

ufc103-mid

For the first time ever, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) aired two live fights from its preliminary card on Spike TV this past weekend (Sat., Sept. 19), leading into the “Franklin vs. Belfort” pay-per-view (PPV) event from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

And if the ratings are any indication, the promotion and the network once again hit it out of the park.

Spike TV today announced that the hour-long, commercial-free broadcast attracted 1.4 million viewers and was the number two rated program among men between the ages of 18 to 34. The heated college football rivalry between Texas and Texas Tech earned the top spot in that time slot.

Overall, the two fights — Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller and Tomasz Drwal vs. Drew McFedries — drew a 1.5 rating among men between the ages of 18-34 and a 1.3 rating among men between the ages of 18 to 49, as well as a household rating of 1.0.

Escudero, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 winner, went on to blast Miller in the opening frame en route to his first career knockout and Drwal softened up McFedries to eventually sink in a fight-ending rear naked choke in round two.

UFC 107: Paul Buentello vs Todd Duffee on tap for Dec. 12

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 12:41 PM PDT

With his contract up for grabs following the demise of Affliction MMA, staunch striking specialist Paul Buentello (27-10) will make his return to the Octagon against rising star Todd Duffee (5-0) at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.

Buentello was last seen using Kiril Sidelnikov's face as a human punching bag for almost three full rounds at Affliction 2: "Day of Reckoning" earlier this year. "The Headhunter" went on to eventually score a late third round technical knockout over the Russian Sambo specialist, who later tested positive for having banned substances in his system after the match.

The win was Buentello's second straight under the Affliction banner — he outpointed last minute replacement Gary Goodridge on the judges scorecards to earn a unanimous decision victory in the promotion's inaugural show in 2008.

He was originally scheduled to face Gilbert Yvel (after Tim Sylvia got clowned by Ray Mercer) at the Aug.1 “Trilogy” event, but the promotion closed up shop after headliner Josh Barnett got popped for steroids.

Over his past 13 fights Buentello has only dropped two contests — one was for a shot at Andrei Arlovski's UFC heavyweight title back at UFC 55 and the other was at the hands of Alistair Overeem for Strikeforce in November 2007.

He brings a wealth of experience, but will it be enough to quell the surging heavyweight standout?

Duffee made his UFC debut at the “Couture vs. Nogueira” pay-per-view back on Aug. 29. The 23-year-old American Top Team product pushed his perfect record to 5-0 with a record-setting seven-second annihilation of Tim Hague.

Prior to that, the Duffee scored an impressive second round technical knockout over Brazilian roadblock, Assuerio Silva, at Jungle Fight 11 last September. The hulking University of Georgia student has ended all five of his professional fights by way of (technical) knockout.

Could “The Headhunter” be number six?

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion BJ Penn defending his title against number one division contender Diego Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

In addition, a lightweight attraction between stars Kenny Florian and Clay Guida was recently shifted to the card to compensate for the loss of the light heavyweight showdown between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rashad Evans.

Access denied: NSAC rejects application for officiating license from ‘Big’ John McCarthy

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 08:23 AM PDT

Mixed martial arts referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy failed to obtain his license to resume officiating in the state of Nevada after his Sept. 10 application was chewed up and spit out by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), according to Sherdog.com.

McCarthy — perhaps the most recognized and respected referee in the history of the sport — retired from his in-ring duties following his 535th bout (the main event between Roger Huerta and Clay Guida) at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 8, 2007.

“Big” John hung up the medical gloves to pursue a new career as an on-air personality and strategic adviser for The Fight Network, as well as a color commentator for the Affliction: “Banned” event in July 2008.

During his absence, the famed referee made comments in support of then-exiled star Randy Couture, as well as some criticism regarding the direction of UFC pay-per-views and its current officiating.

While the critique was small potatoes, it didn’t sit well with UFC President Dana White or Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the NSAC. Both sides remained diplomatic, but McCarthy never reapplied for his license to officiate in Nevada, even after his return to the sport at Strikeforce: "Destruction" in November 2008.

Until now.

Naturally, Kizer insists that McCarthy was not approved due to limited space and a large pool of applicants — not personal ill will, and that his application is not denied — just in limbo with the dozens of other applicants who will never see the inside of a Nevada cage.

Like the many fighters he’s overseen throughout his career, McCarthy was gracious in defeat:

“A license to referee or judge with an athletic commission — it's not a right, it's a privilege. Everyone kept bringing up the fact that I wasn't licensed in Nevada, so I said, 'Alright, I'll apply.' I have no problems with anybody in Nevada. When you do your job right as a referee, there's not gonna be a lot of people saying things. The sport is growing; the officiating is having to grow with it. The whole reason I'm [back] reffing is because it's what I love to do, and I'm going to enjoy doing what I'm doing."

Internet activists have started a Twitter campaign to persuade the powers that be to enlist the services of McCarthy for UFC 104: Shogun vs. Machida, which is held in his home state of California (and where he is currently licensed).

Will we ever see “Big” John back in the UFC? Well, compared to how easily we got Tito Ortiz back inside the Octagon, McCarthy’s homecoming could almost be considered a foregone conclusion.

Tito Ortiz wants to crush Mark ‘The Mummy’ Coleman at UFC 106

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 06:15 AM PDT

Props: Las Vegas Sun

Quoteworthy:

“I'm gonna crush him. I'm gonna push the tempo like he's never had the tempo pushed against him. I watched him fight Fedor Emelianenko. I watched how afraid he was to stand with him. Let's see if he wants to stand with me. I'm not afraid of him. To me he's more of a mummy and less of a 'Hammer.' He started about a year-and-a-half before I started my career, and I see him as a ground and pound specialist. My own forte is to kind of take guys down and ground and pound them. Give the fans what they want to see. That’s what I do.”

Former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz prepares for his upcoming bout against Mark Coleman at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 21. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” is coming off major spinal fusion surgery to correct a back problem that plagued him in his most recent bouts. His last appearance was in May 2008 — a unanimous decision loss to now 205-pound champion, Lyoto Machida. With a long term contract finally in place, Ortiz is here to stay — but where does a win over “The Hammer” take him?

Check out some of his chilling preparations after the jump.
