UFC Quick Quote: Motivated Carlos Condit ‘looking to make a statement’ against Jake Ellenberger

Posted: 15 Sep 2009 05:00 PM PDT

“If anything, [coming to the UFC] added some motivation. You know, some fire under my ass to get moving again and have something to shoot for. Training to maintain the title is one thing. Training to climb the ladder is something else. That's just how life goes. You get to one place and think you're good, and you know, things change. You gotta adapt…. I'm looking to make a big statement [at UFC Fight Night 19]. I wanna get in and get back on the wining track, and I need to get a W in the UFC. I'm 0-1 so far and that doesn't sit well with me. I think my upcoming opponent is very tough, and is nobody to look past at all, but I'm well prepared and I'm looking to make a statement."

– Carlos Condit, who was dominant in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion with an undefeated record (5-0), tells Fight! magazine that he’s out to prove he can replicate that success inside the Octagon. The former WEC welterweight champion was thrown into the fire in his debut, losing a competitive split decision to top 170-pound contender, Martin Kampmann, at UFC Fight Night 18 back in April. It marked the first loss for the “Natural Born Killer” in nearly three years. And it made him realize that he has to elevate his game to a whole new level if he wants to capture another world title. That road back to the top starts anew tomorrow night when Condit welcomes newcomer Jake Ellenberger to the big leagues. Ellenberger is a dangerous striker who was last seen shutting off the switch on Marcelo Alfaya at Bellator Fighting Championships 9 back on June 12. Does Ellenberger have enough to dash Condit’s high hopes or will he simply be over matched? Sound off, Maniacs.

WEC 44: ‘Brown vs Aldo’ announced for Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 18

WEC 44: “Brown vs. Aldo” has been officially announced by the promotion, emanating from “The Pearl” at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 18. The televised main card will air live on the Versus network at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

The featured bout on the card will be a featherweight title defense for Mike Thomas Brown as the WEC 145-pound champion puts his title on the line for the third time when he goes up against perhaps the most skilled and dangerous opponent he’s faced yet, Jose Aldo.

Brown burst onto the scene at WEC 36 as the number one contender to face Urijah Faber in what was at the time the ex-world champion's sixth title defense. The American Top Team powerhouse shocked many by stopping the seemingly unbeatable Faber in the first round with a brutal barrage of strikes.

The newly crowned champion then cemented his status as one of the best at 145-pounds four months later by successfully defending that title with a first round submission win over Greg Jackson product Leonard Garcia at WEC 39.

"The California Kid" attempted to reclaim his title at WEC 41 back in June, but Brown rebuked him with five rounds of punishment — on the same card that saw Aldo win in just eight seconds over a talented Cub Swanson.

The promotion's 145-pound division has recently skyrocketed with talent. And the line of contenders is growing longer as each event passes. Still, it's hard to imagine anyone more deserving than Aldo.

The Brazilian smashing machine is now undefeated (5-0) in the WEC with five straight (technical) knockout victories. He recently scored a crushing win over Cub Swanson at WEC 41, ending the fight before it even got started with a slick skin-splitting flying knee.

This bout — which could be the champ's toughest test to date — has fireworks written all over it.

Manny Gamburyan, Leonard Garcia, "Razor" Rob McCullough, L.C. Davis, Diego Nunes, Cub Swanson and others have also been rumored to be competing in “Sin City” on Nov. 18.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the developing WEC 44 fight card.

UFC Fight Night 19 weigh in results for ‘Diaz vs Guillard’

ufn19-short

The official weigh-in event for UFC Fight Night 19: "Diaz vs. Guillard" took place today (Sept. 15) from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

It all went according to plan — the entire field hit their respective marks — with the exception of Nate Diaz, who came in a half-pound over (156.5) the 156-pound division threshold.

He was given extra time to shed the extra baggage and he did, tipping the the scale at 156 pounds.

Diaz clearly struggled making weight this time around, leading to speculation that this could be his last fight at lightweight. For now, we’ll have to see if the cut has any impact on his performance against Melvin Guillard tomorrow night.

Here are the complete UFC Fight Night 19 weigh-in results:

155 lbs.: Nate Diaz (156) vs. Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard (155)
155 lbs.: Roger "El Matador" Huerta (156) vs. Gray "The Bully" Maynard (155.5)
170 lbs.: Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit (171) vs. Jake Ellenberger (170.5)
185 lbs.: Nate "The Rock" Quarry (184) vs. "Crazy" Tim Credeur (186)
205 lbs.: Steve "Robot" Cantwell (206) vs. Brian "All American" Stann (205.5)
170 lbs.: Chris "The Professor" Wilson (171) vs. Mike "Quicksand" Pyle (170)
185 lbs.: Jay Silva (185) vs. CB "The Doberman" Dollaway (186)
155 lbs.: Sam "Hands of Stone" Stout (156) vs. Phillipe Nover (155.5)
155 lbs.: Jeremy "Lil' Heathen" Stephens (155.5) vs. Justin Buchholz (155.5)
170 lbs.: Brock Larson (171) vs. Mike Pierce (169.5)
185 lbs.: Ryan Jensen (186) vs. Steve "The Hooligan" Steinbeiss (185.5)

Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight night (Wed., Sept. 16), which is slated to air at 8 p.m. ET on Spike TV from Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

Of course, the latest quick updates of the prelim bouts will begin to flow earlier than that right here at around 6:30 p.m. ET.

Remember that UFC Fight Night 19 will serve as the lead-in for the upcoming tenth season of TUF, which features Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and a solid collection of 15 other heavyweight fighters competing in a tournament-style format to earn one "six-figure contract."

It’s going to be a sick action-packed night of mixed martial arts. Check out MMAmania.com for all the pre, during and post-fight UFC Fight Night 19 coverage you can handle!

UFC Quick Quote: Ring rust not a factor for Roger Huerta on Sept. 16

“I had an amazing camp. I isolated myself from the world from TV, Internet, you name it. I’m back up to Minnesota training with my mentor Dave Menne. He just brought in phenomenal athletes to help me prepare for a great opponent like Gray because Gray has phenomenal wrestling, but not only that, he has evolved so well in the sport. His striking looked great against Jim Miller. Obviously his wrestling is spectacular. Gray deserves that attention. He deserves all of my attention and that’s all I set my mind on, is Gray Maynard, putting myself in situations mentally where I know how to scramble out, how to get in top position, or if he throws a right cross or a jab and how to counter. How to move. How to cut angles. The guys have put me in all different situations where we pretty much prepared in every way for Gray. To be a person like myself who leaves everything out in the Octagon, the time off was good. I was able to heal some old injuries so I’m able to perform the way I’ve always performed, which is leaving everything in there. With that said, I don’t think I’ll have any cage rust or ring rust.”

– Former top lightweight title contender Roger Huerta talks to Sherdog.com about picking up right where he left off inside the Octagon when he faces Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16.  Despite a unanimous decision loss to Kenny Florian at UFC 87 in his last appearance more than one year ago, "El Matador"is 20-2-1 and the loss to “KenFlo” was his first in 18 fights. As he gets set to honor the last fight on his contract before bolting to the silver screen, can he avoid making it back-to-back losses against someone as powerful as “The Bully?”

A ‘200 percent healthy’ Anderson Silva is ready to make Frank Mir his next victim

“I don't know anything at all about any elbow injury. I wonder who hurt me? I'm 200 percent healthy and there's no injury. UFC can set the next fight whenever they want, I'm ready. I'm interested in fighting Frank Mir. He can be the next one.”

Despite an MMA Live ‘tweet’ from ESPN that had the Brazilian sidelined with an elbow injury, reigning UFC 185-pound champion Anderson Silva is as fresh as the morning dew and ready to fight when called upon. “The Spider” makes no qualms about answering the challenge of former heavyweight champion Frank Mir, who promised to ‘rip his shoulder out of his socket’ if he and Silva ever hit the ground during a fight. A move up to heavyweight would be unprecedented, but more than likely wouldn't happen anytime soon — company president Dana White, naturally, isn't too keen on the idea. In fact, he’s still holding out for an eventual superfight between Silva and reigning light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Spidey and “The Dragon” have already refused that offer. Sounds like fighting in the UFC isn’t restricted to just the Octagon.

‘Who the hell is this fat guy?’ Big Country looking to make big money via TUF 10

Quoteworthy:

“I stick out, but I can fight. [TUF 10] is my leap of faith, I’m putting all my eggs in one basket. I’m getting a little bit older and this is my last hurrah. If you look at everyone who’s won the Ultimate Fighter, look at where they’re at, financially. I know I can make $200,000 a year fighting but my ultimate goal is to be a millionaire. My ultimate goal in this business is to make $10 million in my lifetime. The casual MMA fans may say] who the hell is this fat guy? They either gotta love you or they gotta hate you. As long as they’re doing one or the other you’re okay. It’s like professional wrestling, you gotta be the heel or you gotta be the hero.”

Former IFL Heavyweight Champion Roy Nelson — who once chose his protruberant belly over a UFC contract — has some lofty financial goals heading into the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Can “Big Country” make big bucks as a UFC superstar? Or will the casual fan base balk at the jiggly jiu-jitsu black belt? Time will tell, but none of it matters unless Nelson wins — and wins “big.”

UFC Quick Quote: Move over Vitor, ‘Ace’ wants a crack at the 205-pound title

Posted: 15 Sep 2009 07:36 AM PDT

“He’s tough. I don’t think people here in the States realize how tough he is because he’s been out of the UFC for so many years. But he’s evolved as a fighter and he’s more dangerous as a fighter now than he was five or six years ago. He’s very well rounded and definitely a tough challenge. People ask me if I want a title shot at 205 pounds, and of course I’d love a title shot, but I’m not the No. 1 contender yet, I’m a couple wins away from that, and right now Vitor is in my way. If I don’t beat Vitor I’m that much further back, so I have to be focusing on Vitor.”

Former UFC 185-pound champion Rich Franklin, who returned to the light heavyweight division after getting evicted from the middleweight class by current landlord Anderson Silva, will shed a few pounds to face former UFC heavyweight Vitor Belfort at UFC 103 on Sept. 19. “Ace” tells MMA Fanhouse that he is on course to challenge for the 205-pound title with a few more wins and that Belfort is standing in his way. But will “The Phenom” be standing over him on Saturday night? This one has “Knockout of the Night” written all over it…
