UFC Quick Quote: Frank Trigg ready to make one last ‘run’ at the 170-pound title Posted: 10 Sep 2009 06:46 PM PDT
– After more than four years away from the Octagon, former number one welterweight contender, Frank Trigg, tells Yahoo!Sports.com that he’s ready to give it one more shot before he puts a ribbon on his mixed martial arts career. The 37-year-old fighter made his professional debut back in 1997 and worked his way up the ranks to earn two world title shots opposite Matt Hughes. He came up empty on both attempts, losing via rear naked choke at UFC 45: “Revolution” and then again at UFC 52: “Couture vs Liddell 2.” His road back to the top of the heap begins in less that two weeks when he takes on perennial division threat, Josh Koscheck, at UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” on Sept. 19. Will the third time be the charm for “Twinkle Toes?” |

Clay Guida enlists the Greg Jackson camp to prepare for Kenny Florian at UFC 107 Posted: 10 Sep 2009 12:17 PM PDT Never-say-die lightweight scrapper Clay Guida (25-10) appears to be pulling out all the stops for his recently announced fight against Kenny Florian from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee on December 12. “The Carpenter” will be joining the famed Greg Jackson camp, home to several MMA superstars including Georges St. Pierre, Nate Marquardt and Rashad Evans to help improve his skill set according to Yahoo Sports. The former deep-sea fisherman has compiled a record of 5-4 since joining the UFC at the beginning of 2007, but that includes four action-packed split decisions and an opponent list with names like Tyson Griffin (split decision loss), Roger Huerta (third round submission loss after being ahead on the scorecards), Marcus Aurelio (split decision win), Mac Danzig (unanimous decision win), Nate Diaz (split decision win), Diego Sanchez (split decision loss) and Din Thomas (controversial unanimous decision loss). Basically, he's fought and performed well against a good number of the division's best competition, including current number one contender Diego Sanchez at TUF 9 Finale, which is certainly a candidate for "Fight of the Year" in 2009. Like Florian, Guida seems to get better with every fight. And he never backs down from an opponent. Both guys are coming off big-time losses, so there's going to be a lot on the line when these two face off in mid-December. Whether or not the move to New Mexico to study under one of the top minds in MMA will help him, remains to be seen. Certainly can’t hurt. |
UFC Quick Quote: Mirko Cro Cop is two wins away from a title shot Posted: 10 Sep 2009 11:14 AM PDT
– Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner, Mirko Filipovic (25-6-2), talks about his title aspirations during a UFC 103 teleconference courtesy of Cagewriter. “Cro Cop” recently returned to Zuffa at UFC 99, making a cyclops out of Mustapha Al-Turk en route to a technical knockout victory back on June 13. While the Croat must first stymie the emergence of a suddenly-relevant Junior Dos Santos at UFC 103 on September 19, it’s not unrealistic to think that a win after that could propel him into title contention. But who might the middle man be? Frank Mir? Big Nog? “The Natural?” Speculations welcome. |
Frank Edgar vs Kurt Pellegrino possible for TUF 10 Finale on Dec. 5 Posted: 10 Sep 2009 09:49 AM PDT There’s a fantastic lightweight match-up brewing between Frank Edgar (10-1) and Kurt Pellegrino (14-4) targeted for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale scheduled for the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on Dec. 5. The news was first reported by ESPN’s “MMA Live” host Jon Anik and MMAmania.com has since confirmed that bout agreements were distributed but are yet to be signed. “The Answer” rebounded from the first professional loss of his career to Gray Maynard (unanimous decision) at UFC Fight Night 13 to outpoint former number one contender Hermes Franca on all three judges scorecards at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin" in July 2008. The latter bout also earned "Fight of the Night" honors, but was water under the bridge after Edgar defeated former lightweight champion Sean Sherk at UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” on May 23 for what was undoubtedly the biggest win of his career. Edgar recently earned a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu while training at Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu in Hamilton, N.J., under Ricardo Almeida — the star pupil of Renzo Gracie. He is a decorated high school (Toms River High School East) and collegiate (Clarion University) wrestler out of Toms River, N.J., who also moonlights as an assistant wrestling coach at Rutgers University. It's going to take every ounce of that talent for Edgar to get past the crafty Pellegrino.
"Batman" has flirted with being recognized as a top competitor in a very crowded division on numerous occasions throughout his career; however, he has been plagued by inconsistency just as he reaches the precipice of contendership. After being submitted by Nate Diaz at Fight Night 13 in April 2008, Pellegrino was able to string together three consecutive wins including a submission victory over Rob Emerson at Fight Night 17 last February and a one-sided unanimous decision nod over the dangerous Josh Neer at UFC 101: “Declaration” just last month. A win over the surging Edgar would unquestionably re-establish him as a force to be reckoned with — and a possible heir to the 155-pound throne. The TUF 10 Finale will feature a showdown between the top two finalists from the Spike TV reality show as well as a potential light heavyweight war featuring Jon “Bones” Jones as he inches his way closer to contention against Matt “The Hammer” Hamill. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to the Dec. 5 fight card as they become available. |
Wes Sims shacks up with ‘obnoxious pigs’ and a ravenous Roy Nelson for TUF 10 Posted: 10 Sep 2009 08:12 AM PDT Props: Cage Potato Quoteworthy:
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 contestant Wes Sims gets ready for another run at UFC stardom on the upcoming Spike TV reality show scheduled to debut on September 16. “A Whole Show” is perhaps best known for his back-to-back losses to Frank Mir in 2003 along with the PRIDE-style stomps that garnered him a disqualification in their first bout. Now with Brock Lesnar currently ruling the heavyweight division, it sounds like Sims is ready to return to the Octagon and get back into the thick of things. Assuming he makes it out of TUF 10, will fans welcome his return? |

UFC 105: Paul Taylor vs John Hathaway in the works for Nov. 14 Posted: 10 Sep 2009 07:23 AM PDT Up-and-coming welterweights Paul Taylor (10-4-1) and John Hathaway (11-0) are penciled in to throw hands in a 170-pound match up at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to Fighter's Only magazine. “Relentless” has been just that, fighting six times since stopping Edilberto de Oliveirahis in his Octagon debut back at UFC 70: “Nations Collide,” also held at the MEN Arena. Taylor was last seen outpointing Peter Sobotta at UFC 99: “The Comeback” last June. Hathaway will make his third trip to the eight-walled cage since pounding out Tom Egan at January’s UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” event. The still unbeaten “Hitman” also fought at UFC 99, taking a unanimous decision win over Ricky Story. UFC 105 has yet to be officially announced by the promotion; however, hometown hero Michael "The Count" Bisping is expected to compete in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang.
