Bitetti Combat results and quick recap

The Bitetti Combat “Nordeste 4″ mixed martial arts event from the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 12, has come to a close.

It was a card stacked with recognizable names of former PRIDE veterans including Ricardo Arona and Murilo Rua — both of whom were victorious at the event.

Nordeste 4 also had its share of past UFC fighters including Jeff Monson and Marvin Eastman. They however, did not share the same fate as “The Brazilian Tiger” and “Ninja.”

Monson was looking to make it eight straight while simultaneously avenging a 2007 loss to Pedro Rizzo when he squared off against “The Rock” on the main card.

“The Snowman” was diligent in his attack, however Rizzo wasn’t having any of the ground game and managed to outpoint Admiral Anarchy with effective striking for his first win since a TKO victory over Monson back at Art of War 3.

Eastman was also game for his appearance, but like Monson, was shut down by the offense of Ricardo Arona. “The Beastman” went down on the judges scorecards for his third loss in four attempts.

Not to be outdone by his Brazilian comrades, former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho defeated IFC veteran Alex Schoenauer — also by unanimous decision.

Not that it mattered. This night belonged to Murilo Rua, who damn near decapitated WEC and PRIDE vet Alex Stiebling with a series of punches that followed his tremendous head kick.

Is Ninja back?

Here are the Bitetti Combat Nordeste 4 complete results:

Ricardo Arona (14-5) def. Marvin Eastman (16-10-1) via Unanimous Decision
Paulo Filho (18-1) def. Alex Schoenauer (14-10) via Unanimous Decision
Pedro Rizzo (17-9) def. Jeff Monson (31-9) via Unanimous Decision
Murilo “Ninja” Rua (17-10-1) def. Alex Stiebling (18-11-1, 1 NC) via KO (Head Kick and Punches) in Round 1
Milton “Miltinho” Viera (10-6-1) def. Luciano Azavedo (15-8) via Split Decision
Fabio Maldonado (12-3) def. Vitor Miranda (4-2) via Unanimous Decision
Glover Texeira (7-2) def. Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento (7-6-1) via Submission (Guillotine Choke) in Round 1
Luis “Besouro” Dutra Jr. (9-2-1) def. Henrique “Chocolate” Nogueira (6-5-1) via TKO (Punches) in Round 1
Cassiano Tytschyo (14-6) def. Fausto Black (3-2) via Submission (Guillotine Choke) in Round 1
Alexandre “Pulga” Pimentel (8-0) def. Luciano “Izzy” Correa (1-2) via Unanimous Decision

WEC 44: Leonard Garcia vs Manny Gamburyan in the works for Nov. 18

A 145-pound fight between UFC lightweight veterans turned WEC featherweights, Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia (13-4) and Manny “Pitbull” Gamburyan (9-4), is currently under consideration for WEC 44 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov.18, according to Sherdog.com.

The report indicates that both fighters have verbally agreed to throw down in “Sin City.”

“The Pitbull” was the runner-up on season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) after injuring his shoulder in the beginning of the second round of the championship fight with Nate Diaz. After six months on the sidelines nursing the injury, Gamburyan returned to the Octagon and ran through is first two opponents, Nate Mohr and Jeff Cox.

However, the Armenian fighter then went on to lose his next two contests under the UFC banner to Rob Emerson and Thiago Tavares, respectively. That’s when he decided to make the move to the WEC where he could compete in his more natural weight class of 145 pounds.

Gamburyan made his debut for the organization back in June on the WEC 41 card, earning a hard-fought unanimous decision over John Franchi.

“Bad Boy” took a similar route to get to where he’s at now. He wasn’t on the reality show, but he made a name for himself as a lightweight in the UFC, too, before dropping down to featherweight. In fact, his fight against highly regarded 155-pound fighter Roger Huerta at UFC 69 was widely considered to be one of the best fights of 2007.

The Greg Jackson product has put together a solid record (3-1) since joining the WEC, with the lone loss coming to the champ Mike Brown in the championship main event of WEC 39. Garcia’s coming off a win in his most recent outing — a split decision over Jameel Massouh last month at WEC 42.

The main event for WEC 44 is expected to be a featherweight title bout between defending champion Mike Thomas Brown and Brazilian challenger Jose “Junior” Aldo. “Razor” Rob McCullough, L.C. Davis, Diego Nunes, Cub Swanson and others have also been rumored to be competing.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the developing WEC 44 fight card.

Matt Riddle vs Nick Osipczak booked for UFC 105 in Manchester

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 12:51 PM PDT

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season seven castmember, Matt Riddle (3-0), will likely do battle against TUF season nine semifinalist and British native, “Slick” Nick Osipczak (4-0), on the UFC 105 undercard from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 21.

Riddle has won all three of his fights inside the Octagon since his professional debut at TUF 7 Finale, which was a unanimous decision win over rival house member Dante Rivera.

While on the show, Riddle stood out as the guy who company president Dana White said scored the biggest knockout in the show’s history when he won his preliminary fight against Dan Simmler in devastating fashion. However, his inexperience showed in the next round when he was submitted late in a close fight by eventual finalist, Tim Credeur.

The Arizona Combat Sports product’s overall game seems to be improving each time out, however, and that has certainly shown in his two wins in 2009 against Steve Bruno and Dan Cramer.

Osipczak was right in the hunt to win this past season of the reality show until he was derailed by eventual runner-up, Demarcus Johnson, in the semifinals.

The 24-year-old Nottingham native won his debut by first round rear naked choke over Frank Lester back in June at TUF 9 Finale. While Riddle has never finished a fight, “Slick” is the exact opposite in that he’s never been out of the first round. In fact, each of his four foes have either been submitted or knocked out within the first few minutes of the fight.

UFC 105 will also feature hometown favorites Michael "The Count" Bisping and Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy in separate bouts against Pride FC standout Denis Kang and four-fight UFC veteran Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim, respectively. The promotion has not yet named a main event.

UFC 105: Jared Hamman vs Alexander Gustafsson being considered for Nov. 14

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 12:20 PM PDT

hamman_gusta

An explosive light heavyweight battle between UFC rookies Jared Hamman (10-1) and Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson (8-0) is being considered for the undercard of UFC 105 on Saturday, Nov. 14, according to MMAWeekly.com.

The event is set to take place at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, and will air via tape delay on Spike TV in the United States.

Hamman is trained under Vladimir Matyushenko at VMAT. He’s probably best remembered for his three fight stint under the Elite XC banner last year when he fought on three Showtime aired events, including two main events appearances on “Challenger Series” cards against Poai Suganuma.

Suganuma was responsible for Hamman’s first and only career loss last April when the fight was called in the first 15 seconds when Poai connected on a flying knee for a flash knockout right out of the gates. There was some question as to whether the fight may have been stopped too quickly, so they agreed to a rematch four months later.

In that fight, Hamman showed why he was previously undefeated with wins over guys like Aaron Rosa and Travis Wiuff by handling the Hawaiian with a technical knockout of his own about halfway through the first.

That was August 2008. Hamman hasn’t fought since then and will undoubtedly be facing a difficult task in shaking off cage rust and battling first time UFC jitters at the same time come mid November.

The good news for him is that his opponent will be dealing with those jitters, too.

“The Mauler” is a 6′5″ Swedish born fighter with a perfect record in eight pro fights on the smaller cards overseas. He’s only 22-years-old, but he’s shown some real potential, which is obviously why he’s in the UFC now.

There’s no question the UFC likes fighters with finishing ability and that’s exactly what this kid has, having finished six of his eight victims by technical knockout.

The fight won’t be short on action and I’d be more than surprised if it went the full three rounds.

UFC 105 will also feature hometown favorites Michael “The Count” Bisping and Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy in separate bouts against Pride FC standout Denis Kang and four-fight UFC veteran Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim.

Wilson Gouveia vs Alan Belcher in the works for UFC 107 on Dec. 12

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 08:10 AM PDT

gouveia-belcher

Middleweights Wilson Gouveia (12-6) and Alan Belcher (14-6) are in talks to rumble at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.

MMAmania.com was able to confirm that the 185-pound match up is currently under consideration for the promotion’s return trip to the "The Volunteer State."

Gouveia is still looking to rebound from disappointing loss – Nate Marquardt went bananas on him in the third round of their fight at UFC 95, unleashing a sensational barrage of strikes from all different angles for which he had no answer.

He was supposed to return against James Irvin at UFC 102 last month; however, both fighters sustained injuries in training and were forced out of action.

This will mark the fourth fight for Gouveia at middleweight. And with losses to top division players such as Marquardt and Goran Reljic, he will need to prove that he he has what it takes to be successful at 185 pounds when he collides with “The Talent” in three months time.

Belcher most recently went toe-to-toe with Yoshihiro Akiyama for three full rounds at UFC 100, losing a very close and controversial split decision. It was a great fight — the “Fight of the Night” — and Belcher’s stock didn’t really take too much of a hit in defeat because of his memorable performance.

The Biloxi, Miss., native was looking to build on his comeback victory over Pride FC and Spirit MC standout Denis Kang at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" earlier this year. It was his fourth win in his last five attempts — a surprising technical knockout loss to newcomer Jason Day at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" last year is the only blip during that span.

Now he’ll have to regroup and try to make it five out of seven against Gouveia.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion BJ Penn defending his title against number one division contender Diego Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

In addition, a lightweight attraction between stars Kenny Florian and Clay Guida was recently shifted to the card to compensate for the loss of the light heavyweight showdown between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans.
