Roger Huerta trains for UFC Fight Night 19 vs Gray Maynard (Video) Posted: 11 Sep 2009 05:04 PM PDT |
Luis Cane next fight likely against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 105 on Nov. 14 Posted: 11 Sep 2009 02:12 PM PDT Surging light heavyweight heel, Luis Cane (10-1), will likely get to sink his chops into former Pride FC 205-pound sensation, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (17-3), at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to Sherdog.com. "Banha" has not competed since battering former WEC light heavyweight champion, Steve Cantwell, for three rounds at UFC 97: "Redemption" back in April to earn a unanimous decision from all three judges sitting ringside. It marked the third straight victory for the Brazilian brawler inside the Octagon. Cane stopped Jason Lambert at UFC 85: "Bedlam" in June 2008 and followed up the performance with a destruction of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via second round technical knockout four months later at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben." His only loss is to James Irvin in his promotional debut, which was ruled a disqualification because of an errant knee to the face.
Nogueira — the younger (by seven seconds) twin brother of UFC heavyweight contender Rodrigo "Minotauro" — recently agreed to a multi-fight deal with the organization. And he earned it — "Lil" Nog went on an absolute tear after dropping a close unanimous decision to Vladimir Matyushenko way back in 2002, rattling off eight straight victories. In fact, two of those wins include a technical knockout over current Strikeforce heavyweight champ, Alistair Overeem, and a submission (armbar) over UFC middleweight contender, Dan Henderson. His momentum, however, was quickly derailed courtesy of a flash knockout just 23 seconds into his bout against the aforementioned Sokoudjou at PRIDE 33 — his last appearance for the struggling promotion. It was the first time in his career that "Minotoro" had been stopped, but he quickly got back to his winning ways after nearly a year on the sidelines. UFC 105 was recently announced by the promotion, featuring hometown hero Michael "The Count" Bisping in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang. Welterweights Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" are also booked to collide in an exciting 170-pound showdown. The main event of the evening is still unknown at this time. Nate Quarry: ‘You don’t become a legend by winning decisions’ Posted: 11 Sep 2009 11:27 AM PDT Props: MMA Fanhouse Quoteworthy:
Former TUF star Nate Quarry discusses his upcoming middleweight bout against "Crazy" Tim Credeur at UFC Fight Night 19 from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Sept. 16. "The Rock" will be out to notch his second straight win inside the Octagon after bouncing Jason MacDonald out of the promotion via TKO at UFC 97 back in April. It was his third win in four attempts since returning from major back surgery. The power-puncher hasn’t been to a decision since Kalib Starnes’ Parkour-inspired performance at UFC 83 — and makes no qualms about putting it all on the line once again next Wednesday. |
Jorge Gurgel vs Billy Evangelista Strikeforce Challenger Series main event rebooked for Nov. 6 Posted: 11 Sep 2009 10:45 AM PDT Strikeforce announced today that its Oct. 25 “Challenger Series” main event between Jorge Gurgel and American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout Billy Evangelista has been rescheduled for Nov. 6 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Gurgel scored a unanimous decision win over Conor Heun in his debut for the promotion last June. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt once again abandoned his ground game in favor of an all out slugfest. This time, however, unlike in his UFC career, Gurgel had his hand raised after the three-round war, which Showtime commentator Mauro Ranallo classified as "a fight for the ages at 160 pounds." The seven-fight Octagon veteran and former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 contestant snapped a two-fight losing skid with the performance and will look to string together consecutive wins for the first time since 2007.
Evangelista lost for the first time in his career to Mike Aina back in May. He was accused of "intentionally" (and illegally) kneeing the Hawaiian fighter in the head while he was down in the second round. "Iron" said he was hurt and unable to continue, which forced referee to call a stop to the action on the recommendation of the cageside doctor. Evangelista appealed the loss after video footage appeared to indicate that his errant blows landed on Aina's shoulder area and the ruling was eventually changed to a “No Contest” (NC) by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). Strikeforce Challenger Series serves as a proving ground to promote up-and-coming (and lesser known) fighters. The events are similar to what Elite XC used to promote with its SHO XC: "Challenger Series" on Showtime. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the Nov. 6 fight card as it becomes official. |

UFC Quick Quote: Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley respects Martin Kampmann — but still plans on knocking him out Posted: 11 Sep 2009 08:32 AM PDT
– Paul "Semtex" Daley talks to Telegraph.co.uk about his Octagon debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. The heavy-handed 26-year-old has vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after Mike Swick withdrew from the upcoming event — but will “The Hitman” send him tumbling back down the ladder? |

World Championship Fighting (WCF) 8 storms the Shriner’s Center on Sept. 26 Posted: 11 Sep 2009 08:29 AM PDT Boston Mass. September 9, 2009 – World Championship Fighting (WCF) today announced the full fight card for its upcoming show at the Aleppo Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass., on Sept. 26. WCF fighter John Benoit takes yet another tough fight when he takes on American Top Team's Hitalo Machado. Benoit was very impressive in his recent win at WCF 7 over Damien Trites and will look to keep the train rolling against Machado. Machado makes his WCF debut, but is no stranger to the local fans. He's a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt and is also an accomplished striker. This highly anticipated fight is sure to please. Trites will also make his return to WCF after his war with Benoit when he takes on Noah Weisman. Noah was impressive in his pro debut with WCF, beating Steve Beck by submission in the first round. Trites will be a big step up in competition for him, but Weisman is looking to get in there with the very best fighters the WCF can give him. Trites is looking for a rematch with Benoit, and a win here could set that fight up. Check out the full fight card, as well as a video preview for the upcoming event, after the jump:
