DREAM 11: Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante injury scraps fight against Daisuke Nakamura

Posted: 13 Sep 2009 05:58 PM PDT

jz calvacante

The woes for top-flight lightweight Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (14-3-1) continue, suffering a hairline fracture of his right knee during a training session last week.

According to sources close to Cavalcante, the American Top Team member was forced to withdraw from his upcoming showdown with Daisuke Nakamura (20-10) at DREAM 11 in Yokohama, Japan, on Oct. 6.

The injury is the latest mishap in Cavalcante’s prolonged health struggle that has derailed his climb through the lightweight hierarchy. Going winless (0-2-1) in his last three bouts with his last win coming in 2007, it looks like he will have to wait even longer to restore himself to the former glory of two-time K-1 Hero’s titleholder.

No official announcement has been made by DREAM regarding the replacement for Daisuke Nakamura. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the developing story and the DREAM 11 fight card.

Report: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera UFC 105 main event under consideration

Posted: 13 Sep 2009 06:43 AM PDT

couture-vera

Former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Randy Couture (16-10), could return to the 205-pound division to take on Brandon Vera (11-3) in the main event at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to The Sun.

The report indicates that UFC sources have confirmed the showdown, which was cobbled together when the lightweight championship match between division kingpin BJ Penn and number one contender Diego Sanchez was booked for UFC 107 on Dec. 12 to compensate for the postponed fight between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans.

In fact, the report indicates that Evans turned down the opportunity to challenge “The Natural,” forcing the promotion to seek “The Truth.”

More on this breaking news shortly.

UFC 105 will feature hometown hero, Michael "The Count" Bisping, in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang, as well as a welterweight battle between Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim. It will air on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva could look like Angelina Jolie with a little more work

Posted: 13 Sep 2009 04:16 AM PDT

"Man, he's more handsome (laughs)… I said to him, ‘Wanderlei, you're much more handsome … If you had long hair and a pretty mouth, you'd be like Angelina Jolie (laughs).’ But he's ok, he did that surgery because of a nose problem and that's important. The rest is rest, the guys joke with him and that's normal."

– UFC Middlweight Champion Anderson Silva has a little fun with the new looks of his Brazilian counterpart, Wanderlei Silva, in a recent interview with Tatame.com. Not too long ago the Silvas entered into a war of words when the “Axe Murderer” announced his plans to compete in the 185-pound division, setting off heated back-and-forth banter that made it seem as if a major rift was created between the former training partners. That’s no longer the case — “The Spider” indicates that it was just a “misunderstanding” and that everything is now “okay.” So “okay” that Anderson can joke about Wanderlei’s recent procedure on his face, which he underwent to remove scar tissue around his eyes to avoid future cuts and fix his nose to correct a sleep apnea problem. He certainly does look a little different, but the “Lara Croft” similarity might be reaching just a bit … don’t ya think?

Don gets Frye’d in 60 seconds at Shark Fights 6 ‘Stars & Stripes’

Posted: 13 Sep 2009 04:15 AM PDT

Legendary Pride FC and UFC brawler Don Frye found himself as the prey instead of “The Predator” when Dave Herman finished him via technical knockout in the main event of Shark Fights 6: “Stars and Stripes” from the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas, on Sept. 12.

“Pee Wee” shrugged off a charging Frye to pound the aging pioneer into his first loss under the Shark Fights Banner. Herman meanwhile, who last appeared for Bellator FC back in May, improves to an impressive 15-1.

Also on the card was former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 cast member Gerald Harris, picking up his seventh straight win by blasting one-time UFC and WEC veteran Nissen Osterneck less than a minute into the first round.

The victory earned Harris the Shark Fights middleweight title.

Here are the Shark Fights 6 complete results:

Dave Herman def. Don Frye via TKO (strikes) 0:60-R1
Gerald Harris def. Nissen Osterneck via KO (punch) 0:46-R1
Anthony Waldburger def. Pay Healy via decision
Ran Weathers def. Phil Cardella via KO 0:36-R1
Marcus Sursa def. Isaac Villanueva via submission (guillotine choke) 2:06-R1
Brian Humes def. Lance Friedenstein via unanimous decision
Anselmo Martinez via Lorenzo Borgomeo by TKO (did not answer the bell) 5:00-R1
Karen Darabedyan def. Estevan Payan via TKO 1:20-R1
Robert Clayton Hantz def. Tony Castillo via decision

Arena Rumble results: Horn and Prangley soar; Martin and Imes crash

arena_rumble

Brand new mixed martial arts promotion, “Arena Rumble,” hosted its debut event last night (Saturday, Sept. 12) from the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington.

Several ex-UFC and Elite XC fighters competed on the card, including main event participants, Jeremy “Gumby” Horn and Jason Guida. In a battle between a former UFC light heavyweight number one contender and a cast off from season eight of “The Ulitmate Fighter,” “Gumby” notched career win number 52 by way of submission.

It didn’t take him long, either.

Horn slapped a fight-ending arm choke on Clay Guida’s older brother rather quickly in the first round, capturing his second straight win while handing Guida his fifth straight loss.

In the co-main event, Strikeforce and UFC veteran Trevor Prangley landed a brutal one punch knockout over Dennis Reed just 20 seconds into the contest. With the win, Prangley improved his overall record to 21-5 and notched his tenth win in his last 11 appearances.

The night wasn’t so kind to two other former UFC fighters as hard-hitting middleweight Terry Martin and Goliath heavyweight Brad Imes were each put to sleep with knockout blows before the final bells of their respective bouts.

Martin was laid down by Julio Paulino in the third round while Imes also made it through two and a half rounds before being stopped in the third frame by Josh Queen.

Current undefeated Strikeforce prospect Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm was also victorious on the card, keeping his perfect record intact (13-0) with a first round technical knockout over Josh Martin.

Here are the full results from the action:

Jeremy Horn defeated Jason Guida via submission (arm choke) in round one
Trevor Prangley defeated Dennis Reed via knockout in round one
Lyle Beerbohm defeated Josh Martin via technical knockout in round one
Josh Queen defeated Brad Imes via technical knockout in round three
Sidney Silva defeated Mike Hanks via unanimous decision
Carmen Cassella defeated Matt Williams via knockout in round two.
Julio Paulino defeated Terry Martin via knockout in round three
Tyson Jeffries defeated Will Noland via submission (triangle choke) in the second round
Tyson Lam defeated Zach Lari via unanimous decision

That’s a wrap from Spokane. Enjoy some football today, Maniacs!
