Hermes Franca vs Gleison Tibau UFC 90 fight set Posted: 05 Aug 2008 08:17 AM CDT
It's a 155-pound clash that pits two fighters on back-to-back losing skids against one another. Franca dropped a unanimous decision to Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin" back in July. It was his first fight back after serving a 12-month suspension for steroid use. He is a former number one title contender who reeled of eight straight wins before losing to then UFC Lightweight Champion, Sean Sherk, at UFC 73: "Stacked" in July 2007. Tibau has a losing record inside the Octagon (2-3), but those three defeats have come against the likes of top fighters such as Nick Diaz, Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson. He most recently succumbed to a crushing "Daddy" guillotine choke at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" last month. UFC 90 features several solid match ups, including the 185-pound tilt between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote, as well as the huge welterweight showdown between Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez. Previewing UFC 87 with Jesse Holland from MMAmania.com Posted: 04 Aug 2008 11:38 PM CDT
Larry and I get into the expectations of UFC 87, including what Georges St. Pierre has done that most wrestlers haven’t, why Roger Huerta will come up short against Kenny Florian and of course the second-chance for Brock Lesnar to make an impact in the UFC heavyweight division. If that’s not enough, stick around for Lesnar himself. Brock talks about Heath Herring, why he thought he won the Mir fight, what he really thinks about Kimbo Slice and why he got rid of his Internet access. A big thanks to Larry for having us return to his show. Take a listen! This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’: Matyushenko vs Nogueira 2? Posted: 04 Aug 2008 10:21 PM CDT IFL light heavyweight champion Vladimir Matyushenko (21-3) is in talks to face former PRIDE standout Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (14-3) at Affliction "Day of Reckoning" on October 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada according to Sherdog.com. “The Janitor” will try to continue cleaning out the world’s light heavyweight closet by rematching Nogueira during Affliction’s sophomore effort. The two first squared off back in 2002 at Japan’s Universal Fighting-Arts Organization where Matyushenko handed “Minotoro” his first professional loss. Matyushenko is the winner of eight straight, including an impressive TKO over Jamal Patterson at IFL’s New Jersey event last April. In fact Vlad hasn’t seen defeat since getting knocked out by fellow Belarusian and Affliction heavyweight Andrei Arlovski back at UFC 44. “Little Nog”, the twin brother of current UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, was victorious in his Affliction debut on July 19, easily stopping Edwin “Babyface” DeWees in the first round. A win over the heavy-handed Matyushenko could go a long way in re-establishing Noguiera as one of the world’s top 205 lb fighters. That position was called into question when the rugged Brazilian was knocked stiff by Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at PRIDE 33 in 2007. Affliction "Day of Reckoning" features the main event of Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett (23-5) vs. Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (13-5). More fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks including a rumored middleweight showdown between Matt “The Law’ Lindland (21-5) and Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (17-8). Stay tuned. |
WEC 35 medical suspensions and injuries from NSAC Posted: 04 Aug 2008 07:49 PM CDT The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its medical suspensions for the WEC event that took place from "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday, August 3, revealing that several fighters will need to take mandatory time off to lick their wounds. Some more than others. In fact, Hiromitsu Miura sustained “orbital blowout fractures” as a result of his four-round war with WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit. That sounds excruciating. Here's the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. For complete WEC 35: “Condit vs. Miura” results and coverage click here and here. |
Spencer Fisher vs Melvin Guillard UFC 90 fight possible in Chicago Posted: 04 Aug 2008 04:01 PM CDT
"The King" reportedly made the announcement over the weekend at the International Mixed Martial Arts Convention (IMMAE) at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in Long Beach, Calif.; however, no bout agreements have been signed at this time. Fisher is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 Finale in June. The Miletich Fighting Systems veteran has won two of his last four bouts, including a rematch against Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 10 more than one year ago. He is a former 155-pound contender. And he'll need to put together back-to-back wins to prove that he still belongs among the division's elite. Guillard made a triumphant return to the Octagon at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" last month, needing just 36 seconds to take out Dennis Siver. "The Young Assassin" has tremendous potential; however, personal situations outsides the cage have affected his performance inside it. He, too, has something to prove in the match up, making it a rather intriguing bout. Fisher clearly has the all around edge, but Guillard could score an upset here. It all more than likely depends on which Guillard shows up. To check out the latest UFC 90 card and fight rumors click here. (Thanks to MMAmania.com reader “Chris” for the assist.) |
WEC paydays and salaries for ‘Condit vs Miura’ from NSAC Posted: 04 Aug 2008 03:13 PM CDT
WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit was the bread winner on the night, taking home $44,000 for his main event title defense over Hiromitsu Miura. For Miura, despite this being the main event — and one of the best fights of the year — he only made $5,000 base pay. Steve Cantwell netted $1,000 less than Brian Stann, but the new light heavyweight champ will get to take a nice shiny new belt home with him, too. Lightweight title holder Jamie Varner took home $30,000 for his title defense over Marcus Hicks. And welterweight Brock Larson also pocketed $30,000 in just 37seconds of work. Here are all the WEC 35 payouts: Carlos Conidt — $44,000 ($22,000 to show, $22,000 to win) Steve Cantwell — $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win) Jamie Varner — $30,000 ($15,000 to show, $15,000 to win) Brian Bowles — $8,000 ($4,000 to show, $4,000 to win) Josh Grispi — $8,000 ($4,000 to show, $4,000 to win) Brock Larson — $30,000 ($15,000 to show, $15,000 to win) Blas Avena — $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win) Shane Roller — $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win) Mike Budnik — $6,000 ($3,000 to show, $3,000 to win) Scott Jorgensen — $6,000 ($3,000 to show, $3,000 to win) Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc. For complete results and coverage of the WEC 35 click here and here. |
