MMA Quick Quote: Brock Larson wants Carlos Condit rematch

Posted: 08 Aug 2008 06:50 AM CDT

brock larson

"I'm the real deal and I'm ready for Condit. I'm ready for it, so it's just a matter of getting (Condit) to agree, but (the WEC) definitely wants it to happen. It's up to Condit's camp to figure out what it wants. I'd like to fight as often as possible, but the way it's looking, this is the fight I want to wait for. I don't want to risk anything like I did before fighting Condit the first time. I was supposed to fight him when I fought Kevin Knabjan two months before, and I think I peaked too early for that. It's hard to peak twice in two months, so if it comes out that way, that's the way I'm going to have to take it.”

– WEC welterweight Brock Larson tells MMAWeekly.com that he wants another shot at Carlos Condit’s title. Larson looked to be controlling the champ early on in their fight at WEC 29 last August, but the crafty Condit was able to secure a fight ending armbar midway through the opening round. Larson, who trains at Minnesota Martial Arts Academy with guys like Sean Sherk, Brock Lesnar and Nick Thompson, is a beast at 170 pounds. And despite the previous loss, poses some difficult problems for “The Natural Born Killer” with his strength and wrestling ability. Larson’s only other loss during his 26-fight career was to UFC number one contender Jon Fitch in a decision. He’s certainly worthy of another shot at the gold coming off three straight first round victories, but will the WEC give Miura a rematch with the champ first? If that’s the case and Larson plans on waiting for a rematch with Condit, he’ll be out of action for a long time.

Quoteworthy:

“The last time I defended my title, I didn’t approach it the right way” (Serra). “[I] trained to fight an army and there is no way one man can stop me if many cannot.”

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre appeared focused and serious today during the public press conference at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minn., to promote UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy,” which is slated for the Target Center Saturday, August 9. “Rush” will look to retain the 170-pound strap for the first time since winning it back from Matt Serra when he takes on number on contender, Jon Fitch, in the main event of the evening.

Special thanks to Tracy Lee over at CombatLifestyle.com for the great pics, including shots of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson who appeared on the dais along with UFC President Dana White and the fighters set to headline the pay-per-view (PPV) event. To check out the whole gallery click HERE.

Thales Leites vs Goran Reljic fight on tap for UFC 90

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 09:26 PM CDT

Thales Leites Goran Reljic UFC 90
Thales Leites (14-1) and Goran Reljic (8-0) will lock horns at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25, pitting two up-and-coming talents up against one another to determine who will rise to the top faster within the 185-pound division.

Leites was supposed to take on Dean Lister at UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Neb., on September 17; however, the “Boogeyman” sustained an injury during training and was scratched from the showdown.

Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leites has rattled of four straight wins inside that Octagon. And that includes a controversial split decision win of perennial contender, Nathan Marquardt, at UFC 85: "Bedlam" back in June.

His only career loss is to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut back in 2006.

Reljic is a 23-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter who stopped Wilson Gouveia via technical knockout in his debut performance for the promotion at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May. He trains with the Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in London, England, where he is a purple belt.

In addition, he is the protege of former UFC heavyweight fighter, Mirko Cro Cop.

Jason Lambert vs Jason Day UFC 88 fight set

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 12:59 PM CDT

lambert day ufc 88
Jason Lambert (23-8) and Jason Day (17-7) will meet inside the Octagon at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6.

MMAmania.com was able to independently confirm the booking, which was originally posted over at FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

“The Punisher” appears to be making the drop to middleweight after competing most of his career in the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions. Perhaps back-to-back losses to 205-pounders Wilson Gouveia and Luis Arthur Cane, respectively, convinced Lambert to try his luck in the 185-pound division.

Lambert has three losses in his last five attempts within the eight-sided cage.

Day was victorious in his debut for the promotion against Alan Belcher at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ in April, upending Alan Belcher via first round technical knockout. The Canadian product was then stopped himself in the same fashion less than two months later when he locked horns with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam.”

WEC gate for ‘Condit vs Miura’ tops $116,000

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 12:39 PM CDT

WEC 35 recap
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently reported that the WEC sold 734 out of a possible 1,008 tickets for last Sunday’s WEC 35 event at “The Joint” at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, raking in a total paid gate of $116,900.

An additional 272 tickets were handed out free of charge, leaving just two seats unoccupied.

This is being widely considered a big success for the Zuffa-owned organization to have nearly every seat in the house with a butt in it, but as stated above it was not a sellout.

With all the recent praise it would seem that the WEC wouldn’t have a problem selling out such a small arena, especially considering rival promotion Elite XC was able to unload more than five times as many tickets for its “Unfinished Business” event only one week earlier.

“Unfinished Business,” however, was reported by most outlets to be a failure as far as ticket sales go because nearly half the stubs printed were left unpaid for.

It’s hard to compare the two because there are a ton of different factors involved such as: location, date, fight card, venue, fighter payroll, etc.

But if WEC 35 producing 734 ticket sales for $116,900 is considered a success, then shouldn’t Elite XC selling 3,701 tickets for a total gate of $268,715 be considered at least somewhat of an achievement regardless of the size of the venue?

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson speaks, appears with Dana White (Video)

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 09:59 AM CDT

rampage jackson

Former light heavyweight champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson,” appears to be in good spirits in this recent video despite his recent arrest and subsequent legal issues.

Jackson indicates that he is already back in the gym with “new trainers,” which means that he has likely split from Juanito Ibarra. We’re still waiting to hear the specifics from Jackson about his reasons behind the decision; however, it appears that it could be money related.

He also is quick to point out that he is not crazy — his bizarre behavior was attributed to delirium, which White has mentioned was caused by an odd diet that comprised essentially nothing more than energy drinks and very little sleep.

Regardless check out the video after the jump.

UFC Quick Quote: Dana White impressed with Heath Herring 2.0

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 09:37 AM CDT

heath herring

"The thing about Heath Herring is that he not only says he'll fight anyone, he proves it because he gets in there and does it. But he kind of always teetered between being a success and mediocrity. He'd win one, he'd lose one, and he just sometimes struck you as a flabby guy who wasn't particularly dedicated. He's all of a sudden changed his tune, and he's much more serious and focused and dedicated. And when Heath Herring is focused and in shape, he's a tough guy for anyone to beat."

– UFC President Dana White tells Yahoo!Sports.com that he likes what he sees with the improved Heath Herring, who has adopted a new nutritional program and re-dedicated himself to training. Perhaps the massive man who will stand across from him inside the Octagon, Brock Lesnar, at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” this weekend has lit a fire under the “Texas Crazy Horse.” It should be real interesting to see how this unfolds on Saturday night.
