Yoshiro Maeda vs. Rani Yahya WEC fight booked for Hard Rock Posted: 20 Aug 2008 08:01 PM CDT
We all remember Maeda from his three round war against division kingpin Miguel Torres at WEC 34 in June. Unfortunately for the Japanese fighter, he wasn’t able to answer the bell for the fourth round because of a doctor’s stoppage. But he was able to open a lot of eyes with the way he went toe-to-toe with the champ, who is widely considered to be a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. It’s a step up in competition for anyone when they face Torres, and Maeda was ready for the challenge. However, he can’t expect a huge drop off in talent when he faces Rani Yahya. Obviously, the 23-year-old Brazilian has a long way to go in his development as a complete mixed martial artist, but the kid is a submission whiz, boasting 10 wins by way of tapout. Yahya has won one and lost one while fighting in the WEC. His win was a a first round submission (rear naked choke) over Mark Hominick (16-8) at WEC 28 in June of last year. His loss was a unanimous decision to former champion Chase Beebe (11-3) at WEC 30 last September. The 135 pounders are always exciting to watch. The WEC has done a nice job introducing them to the main stage of the mixed martial arts world. This fight is a very nice addition to an already promising show. WEC 36 features a main event featherweight title fight between champion, Urijah Faber and challenger Mike Brown. The highly anticipated rematch between middleweight champion Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen is also set for this card. Throw in two other high profile fights (Jens Pulver vs. Leonard Garcia and Rob McCullough vs. Donald Cerrone) and the WEC has another can’t miss event set for mid September. Jens Pulver vs Leonard Garcia WEC fight official for September 10 Posted: 20 Aug 2008 02:40 PM CDT
In fact, the showdown was among several bouts confirmed for the first-ever show for the promotion in the “Sunshine State.” To check them all out click here. Pulver recently lost a five-round fight to current featherweight champion Urijah Faber. It was the first loss for him at his natural weight. “Lil Evil” won his WEC debut, submitting Cub Swanson with a nifty choke just seconds into round one. He was rumored to face Alexandre Noguiera until he was suspended for a failed drug test. With “Pequeno” out of the picture, insert Leonard Garcia who also has a lot to prove. Garcia debuted with WEC in Febuary with a first round technical knockout over Hiroyuki Takaya. The celebration was short lived, however, when Garcia was arrested for alleged participation in a drug-ring in Texas. Since then, Garcia has been cleared of most if not all of the charges and has the green light to resume life as he knows it as a fighter. WEC 36 is headlined with a championship doubleheader — Mike Brown will challenge featherweight king Urijah Faber and 185-pound champ Paulo Filho will rematch Chael Sonnen for the WEC middleweight title. The main card will air live on the Versus network at 9 p.m. ET on fight night. |

Tim Boetsch vs Mike Patt UFC 88 fight planned with James Lee hurt Posted: 20 Aug 2008 11:44 AM CDT
Tim Patt (11-2) will fill-in for an injured Lee and take on Tim Boetsch (7-2) in a light heavyweight match up at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6. While the promotion still has not made the switch official, MMAmania.com can confirm that it is indeed in the works. Patt is a three-fight Bodog Fight veteran who has won seven of his last eight professional mixed martial arts bouts. He has not competed since a submission (guillotine choke) win over Adam Rodman at a Fight Time Productions show back in November 2007. This will mark his first appearance inside the Octagon. Boetsch, on the other hand, will look to improve his mark within the eight-sided cage to 2-1. "The Barbarian" burst onto the scene with an epic "rag doll" toss of David Heath at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" earlier this year, which led to a technical knockout victory. However, he then ran into Matt Hamill and the thin Colorado air at UFC Fight Night 13, losing via technical knockout during a fight in which he appeared to lose considerable steam after the first five minutes of round one. The 205-pound showdown between Boetsch and Patt is set for the preliminary card. Accordingly, there is no guarantee that it will air on the pay-per-view (PPV) telecast. Unless, of course, Boetsch puts on another mind boggling Jeet Kun Do performance. To check out the latest UFC 88 fight card and rumors click here. |
Jared Shaw: KJ Noons needs to ’step up’ and rematch Nick Diaz Posted: 20 Aug 2008 10:05 AM CDT Props: MMAWeekly.com Quoteworthy:
Elite XC Vice President Jared Shaw reveals he has been trying to put together a KJ Noons and Nick Diaz rematch for Noons’ lightweight title on the October 4 “Saturday Night Fights on CBS” event, but is having a hard time getting Noons’ camp to accept the fight. Could it be that Nick Diaz was right all along and the champ really is ducking a rematch? Of course, Noons did say in an interview right here on MMAmania.com that he didn’t really have a desire to fight on a CBS card, and he also said he planned on taking a couple boxing fights after his title defense against Yves Edwards. It’s possible that those things could be holding this fight up … we don’t know. What we do know is that Elite XC wants the fight to happen, and now it’s on Noons to step up. |
