War of the Words: Mirko Cro Cop vs Alistair Overeem Posted: 16 Aug 2008 02:30 AM CDT It seems former PRIDE and UFC heavyweight Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (23-6-2) is not enjoying his self-imposed sabbatical from mixed martial arts thanks to current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (28-11). "Demolition Man" — who submitted Mark Hunt last month at DREAM 5 — has accused the Croatian of ducking him on more than one occasion and his latest rant on ‘In The Guard‘ gets a little salty: Quoteworthy:
Cro Cop hasn't competed since DREAM 1 back in March after being fed Tatsuya Mizuno in his much ballyhooed debut. He was penciled in to face Jerome LeBanner at DREAM 4, until it was switched to a bizarre grappling match against Ralek Gracie - pushing the LeBanner fight to DREAM 5 on July 21. After Lebanner went AWOL and his injuries started acting up, Filipovic bailed on DREAM 5, instead opting to sit on the sidelines and rebuild his aging body after having arthroscopy earlier this month. The latest response from the Croat's official blog:
Hopefully Cro Cop has one last run in him. He's a gifted striker who can easily compete with any top ten heavyweight, but his tenure in the UFC left many wondering if his best days were behind him. If Cro Cop can indeed return to action against the resurgent Overeem at DREAM 6 in September, we may have the answer sooner rather than later. |
MMAmania.com caption contest winner Posted: 16 Aug 2008 01:53 AM CDT And the winner of the most recent MMAmania.com caption contest is:
Congratulations to MMAmania.com reader "James S" for the winning entry. As promised, we'll send you an MMAmania.com t-shirt for being the best of the bunch. With a total of 266 entries, it wasn't easy coming up with a winner. For those of you who are scratching your heads over my pick, keep in mind this process is entirely subjective. It was all a matter of making me laugh. Usually that honor is reserved for Mr. Mania’s physical shortcomings, but in this case it was the caption by site regular James S. If anyone cares, Josh Barnett defeated Tank Abbott in the main event of the Inoki Genome Federation's August 15 pro wrestling event. Try to contain yourselves. |

SHO XC CHALLENGER SERIES 7 QUICK RESULTS: Jared Hammen defeats Poai Suganuma by technical knockout (strikes) at 2:34 of round one SHO XC CHALLENGER SERIES 7 BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY: Poai Suganuma vs. Jared Hamman (205-pound limit) This was an exciting fight, much better than the first time. Both guys came to bang. It was Suganuma who was the early aggressor. He looked to have Hamman in trouble on a couple separate occasions, but Hammen was always able to weather the storm. Hammen stayed composed and kept trying to get his shots in on the exchanges too. Suganuma was clearly throwing the more powerful shots, but Hamman was more technical and landed a big left hand that led to some fight ending ground and pound. It’s now one and one, and it seems obvious we haven’t seen the last of these two in the cage. Final result: Jared Hammen defeats Poai Suganuma by technical knockout (strikes) at 2:34 of round one -end- Cyrille “Snake” Diabate vs. Jamie Fletcher (205-pound limit) Fletcher’s plan early on was clearly to try and use leg kicks to take away Diabate’s advantage he has in the striking game with those long lanky limbs. It was working for a while until Diabate started to get comfortable and started landing strikes of his own. He landed numerous kicks, knees and punches that probably won him the round, even though Fletcher scored a late takedown. Fletcher fell victim to a low blow early in the second that caused a momentary pause in the action. When the fight started back up Diabate immediately started using his reach to win some stand up exchanges. Fletcher was clearly outclassed in that department and decided he needed to take the fight back to the mat. Once he got it there he gave up a dominate position to Diabate after attempting a guillotine. Diabate opened up a huge cut on Fletcher’s head with some nasty ground and pound. There was blood everywhere as the second round ended. Diabate had a lot of confidence when the third round started, but he almost blew the win when Fletcher caught him in a deep guillotine late in the third. Somehow he escaped and pounded on Fletcher for the last minute or so to secure the unanimous decision win. Final result: Cyrille “Snake” Diabate defeats Jamie Fletcher via unanimous decision -end- Sammy Morgan vs. Fabricio “Morango” Camoes (160-pound limit) Morgan came out with some hard leg kicks, but Camoes was able to capitalize by grabbing one of those legs and turning it into a nice takedown where he found himself in the full mount position in a matter of seconds. Morgan gave up his back and Camoes slapped in the rear naked choke for the win. Final result: Fabricio “Morango” Camoes defeats Sammy Morgan by submission (rear naked choke) at 0:47 of round one -end- Debi “Whiplash” Purcell vs. Rosi Sexton (140-pound limit) There was a lot of clinching early on. Sexton spent most of the first round trying to take Purcell down to no avail, but the back and forth clinch war clearly took it’s toll on both fighters. The second round had a lot more stand up and a lot less of the clinching. It was Sexton who appeared to be a little bit more aggressive and possibly a little fresher. Purcell hung in there though and scored a takedown late in the round to make it that much tougher on the judges. The third round was very close as well. At one point Sexton attempted a cartwheel pass with Purcell on the ground. That was probably the highlight of the fight, and it didn’t even work. Both fighters seemed tired and lethargic throughout the fight and it didn’t live up to the standards Cyborg Santos and Gina Carano have set recently. In the end the judges gave a razor close split decision win to Sexton. Final result: Rosi Sexton defeats Debi Purcell via split decision -end- Keith “KO” Berry vs. Ray Lizama (190-pound limit) The first round was action packed. About a minute into the fight Berry almost got dropped by a left hand from Lizama. He was able to recover and the fight stayed pretty even until it was Berry who dropped Lizama with a right hand of his own. Berry slapped on a deep rear naked choke right away, but for some reason Berry let go of the choke and Lizama was able to escape the round. The second round was more back and forth stand up before Lizama started to overwhelm the 20 year old Berry. For a second it looked like Berry might be able to mount a comeback, but Lizama put an end to that with some nasty strikes to the body. In fact, it was a shot to the body that ended up finally sending Keith Berry to the mat and giving Ray Lizama the technical knockout win. Final result: Ray Lizama defeats Keith Berry by technical knockout (strikes to the body) at 2:15 of round two -end- |

Johny Hendricks vs Alex Serdyukov WEC fight booked for September 10 Posted: 15 Aug 2008 06:59 PM CDT
Welterweight Johny Hendricks (3-0) is confirmed to go to battle against Alex “The Russian Crusher” Serdyukov (8-4) at WEC 36 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on September 10. Hendricks joins camp mates and fellow Oklahoma State University (OSU) alumni wrestling standouts Jake Rosholt and Shane Roller on the Zuffa-owned mixed martial arts promotion’s roster. Hendricks is a very interesting prospect — he’s a two-time national champion collegiate wrestler at OSU, earning All-American accolades all four years as a Cowboy. He just missed three-peating as the Division I NCAA 165-pound national champion in 2007 when he lost in the final to Mark Perry — a standout from the University of Iowa. As a professional mixed martial artist, Hendricks has been impressive as well. In his debut last September, he scored a third round technical knockout over Victor Ratcliff at Masters of the Cage 16. He took one more fight in 2007, a second round technical knockout against Spencer Cowley. Then in March of this year, Hendricks earned his first win by submission by using a D’arce choke to beat Richard Gamble in the first round. There is a ton of potential for this kid to become a star in the WEC welterweight division. If he can parlay his already worldclass wrestling credentials into a solid all around MMA game, he will be a very dangerous fighter for years to come. However, things won’t be easy for Hendricks in his first fight on the big stage. “The Russian Crusher” is a seven-fight WEC veteran who has been in the professional MMA game since 2003 and comes into this fight riding a three-fight win streak. Three of Serdyukov’s four career losses have come at the hands of John Alessio (twice) and Jon Fitch, and he also has notable wins over Mark Weir (18-15), Ryan Stonitsch (8-1) and most recently Luis Sapo (15-2) at WEC 34. This is a solid addition to a card that is already headlined by two title fights. WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber will defend his strap for the sixth time against world ranked Mike Brown, and undefeated middleweight champion Paulo Filho will finally give Chael Sonnen his long awaited and much deserved rematch. The WEC continues to deliver quality fight cards. Keep an eye on Johny Hendricks, he could be a show stealer. |
Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson hearing postponed Posted: 15 Aug 2008 03:48 PM CDT
The news was first reported by Sherdog.com. Other media has been slow to pick up the story. Jackson, 30, was scheduled for arraignment in Costa Mesa, Calif., on Friday. Police arrested the fighter on several charges on July 15 after a bizarre hit-and-run incident. Police reports indicate Jackson's rampage was driving a Ford pick-up, adorned with a photo of himself, that struck other vehicles, jumped medians and swerved onto sidewalks. It has been reported that a woman suffered a miscarriage after her SUV was struck by Jackson's truck (although there is no evidence at this time that proves the two are related). "The district attorney's office is responsible for filing charges and that case is still under investigation based on some new evidence that has been discovered," Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office, told Sherdog. Jackson has not been given his next court date. He was released on $25,000 bail only hours after the arrest. The next day he was hospitalized following reports of erratic behavior. The strange week came in the aftermath of his loss to Forrest Griffin on July 5 at UFC 86 in Las Vegas. Dana White, UFC president, has said the fighter was living on a diet of energy drinks and water for several days prior to the arrest and hospitalization. Since then Jackson has split with Juanito Ibarra — his longtime trainer and fellow born-again Christian. Jackson appealed his jovial self during a press conference last week during the lead up to UFC 87 in Minneapolis. |

Tom Atencio rejects Tito Ortiz ‘ground-breaking record contract’ with Affliction MMA claims Posted: 15 Aug 2008 09:17 AM CDT Atencio makes some interesting remarks regarding the Tito Ortiz contract negotiations — especially when you look at them side-by-side with what the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” had to say right here. Two wildly different accounts … wonder who is trying to play who here. (Thanks to MMAmania.com reader ” VNDK8″ for the assist.) |
Dana White: ‘Fedor did everyone a favor by beating’ Tim Sylvia Posted: 15 Aug 2008 08:58 AM CDT
Quoteworthy:
UFC President Dana White has some harsh criticism for his former heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia, saying that Fedor Emelianenko did “everyone a favor” by throttling him in 36 seconds at Affliction: “Banned” last month. “The Maine-iac” was granted a release from his contract after losing to Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira for the interim division title at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” earlier this year. He has indicated that he would like to return to the promotion in the future; however, perhaps he will change his tune after these latest remarks. |
