Drew Fickett vs. Jay Hieron Affliction fight likely October 11

Posted: 23 Aug 2008 03:26 AM CDT

It appears Drew Fickett may have finally been able to move ahead and put his personal problems behind him.

Sherdog.com has been able to confirm that former International Fight League welterweight champion Jay Hieron (15-4) has verbally accepted an offer to fight “The Master” on October 11 at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning".

Ficket (35-6) has competed as recently as August 8, submitting Joe Manzello at Silver Crown Fights (SCF) in round one. He had aligned himself with EliteXC earlier this year, but his much ballyhooed bout with Jake Shields never materialized to due injuries and scheduling conflicts on both sides.

From there, Fickett was plagued with personal problems including a messy contract dispute with Canada's Maximum Fighting Championship. After eventually parting ways with EliteXC, Fickett fought twice for Rage in the Cage, going 1-1 before his most recent match at SCF.

Now he has his stiffest test in quite some time against the venerable Hieron.

The former IFL warrior is coming off a first round drubbing of Mark Miller at IFL: ‘New Jersey’ last April. When the troubled company went belly-up shortly thereafter, Hieron settled on a three-fight contract with Affliction after being courted by the UFC, Elite XC and Strikeforce.

Affliction "Day of Reckoning" takes place on October 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring the main event of Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett (23-5) vs. Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski (13-5).

Wagnney Fabiano to WEC featherweight class

Posted: 22 Aug 2008 07:20 PM CDT

wagney fabianoThe WEC today made life a little more difficult for its 145-pound king, Urijah Faber.

The company inked IFL Featherweight Champion Wagnney Fabiano (10-1) to a deal that will put him in the WEC cage soon, according to Tatame.com. He is widely considered one of the top fighters in the world and was more than likely the most coveted fighter on the entire (now-defunct) IFL roster.

Here’s his thoughts about coming to states to compete in the WEC:

"My objective is to grown in the event e get the title. Let's start with a tough and focused work. It won't chance anything in my life, I'm always serious and go to any event to win. My goal is to fight for the belt and do my best.”

He’s fought some of the top fighters in the world in the lighter weight classes, falling only once to former WEC number one contender, Jeff Curran, by decision. He also holds a win over one of the men who will soon compete for the Elite XC featherweight belt, Bao Quach.

Wagnney will undoubtedly face a stiff test in Faber, if he does in fact get a shot at the champ sometime down the road. Zuffa has brought in many of the other top guys in the world, including Curran, and none have had any success against “The California Kid.”

However, Wagnney is confident he can change all that. Here’s another snip:

“Faber is the best of the world now. To beat him, I think you have to be in a good shape. He's an expert fighter and he has a good gas, it's complicated to beat a guy like him. You have to set a good game plan and be calm and watch the elbows, because if you hits you can change a whole fight.”

This is a very exciting signing for the WEC. More competition is never a bad thing … and that’s exactly what Wagnney Fabiano will bring to the organization.

Tenfold.

WEC fight card for ‘Faber vs. Brown’ official for September 10 in Florida

Posted: 22 Aug 2008 02:48 PM CDT

The full lineup for WEC 36 was made official today. The event will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on September 10, airing live on the Versus Network at 9 p.m. ET.

WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber (21-1) will defend his gold for the sixth time against Mike Brown (19-4). Many consider Brown to be a top five talent in the 145-pound division. He’s strong, athletic and well rounded. Accordingly, the American Top Team-trained fighter poses a real threat to “The California Kid’s” reign as division kingpin.

As expected, Chael Sonnen (21-9-1) will get his long awaited rematch with WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho (16-0). Sonnen previously challenged for Filho’s title at WEC 31 in December. The champ was able to secure an armbar late in the third round, and despite Sonnen pleading for the fight not to be stopped, the ref intervened anyway.

It was definitely a controversial ending and the rematch was a foregone conclusion.

In one of the more guaranteed to be exciting fights so far this year, featherweights Jens Pulver and Leonard Garcia will face off in the cage. Who doesn’t want to see this fight? I’m drooling.

Once again the WEC has put together a can’t miss fight card. The promotion continues to make the rest of the struggling organizations like Elite XC look bad simply by offering a better product.

Here’s the official lineup for WEC 36:

145 lbs.: WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah " The California Kid" Faber (21-1) vs. Mike Brown (19-4)
185 lbs.: WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho (16-0) vs. Chael Sonnen (22-9-1)
155 lbs.: "Razor" Rob McCullough (16-4) vs. Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (8-0)
145 lbs.: Jens " Little Evil" Pulver (22-9-1) vs Leonard Garcia (15-3)
135 lbs.: Rani Yahya (12-4) vs. Yoshiro Maeda (23-5-2)
185 lbs.: Jake Rosholt (4-0) vs. Danillo Villefort (8-2)
170 lbs.: Alex Serdyukov (12-4) vs. Johny Hendricks (3-0)
205 lbs.: Tim McKenzie (12-5) vs. David Avellan (2-0)
155 lbs.: Ed Ratcliff (6-1) vs. Danny Castillo (5-1)

Jake Rosholt, Donald Cerrone and Johny Hendricks are names to look out for on this card. All three have been featured on episodes of “Tapout.” Rosholt and Hendricks boast insane wrestling credentials, while “Cowboy” is an accomplished Muay Thai fighter.

Keep your eyes peeled on fight night.

Cheick Kongo: ‘Nothing worries me too much with Brock Lesnar’ if UFC 91 fight is booked

Quoteworthy:

“…. If the UFC wants me to fight Lesnar, I'll do it for sure…. Lesnar was impressive [against Heath Herring at UFC 87]. He showed confidence in his standup striking and completely dominated Heath Herring…. I try to never underestimate any of my opponents but there’s really nothing that worries me too much with Brock Lesnar. I know it could be a tough fight, but, you know, I train hard and I will be ready for this one too. I am hungry.”

Cheick Kongo talks about a potential heavyweight showdown with Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in Portland, Ore., at the Rose Garden Arena on November 15. In short, he’s not scared of the mammoth former highly decorated collegiate national wrestling champion. Let’s just hope the “French Sensation” has polished his takedown defense since the loss to Carmelo Marrero at UFC 64: “Unstoppable” back in 2006.

Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon Affliction fight likely October 11

Posted: 22 Aug 2008 10:12 AM CDT

Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon
Up-and-coming lightweights Chris Horodecki (12-1) and Dan Lauzon (10–2) are expected to tangle at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 11.

Sherdog.com was today able to confirm that the long-rumored match up has been agreed to by both fighters and is just awaiting signatures on the bout agreements.

Horodecki — the former International Fight League (IFL) 155-pound champion –- made his debut for the promotion back in June 2006, going 8-1 and looking sensational in the process. At just 20 years old, Horodecki has already made a name for himself in mixed martial arts, evident in the courtship that followed the demise of the IFL.

Among the suitors were WEC, Affliction and the American Fight League (AFL). Even World Victory Road got in on the action, which considered Horodecki as a potential opponent for lightweight diety Takanori Gomi at August's 'Sengoku' event.

The Canadian has just one career loss –- a lopsided beatdown courtesy of Ryan Schultz at the IFL World Grand Prix Finals in December 2007.

Lauzon –- the younger brother of top UFC lightweight contender Joe Lauzon –- was the youngest fighter to ever compete inside the Octagon at 18 years of age back in 2006. He was essentially thrown to the wolves, getting paired up against veteran Spencer Fisher in his debut.

It didn't last long –- Fisher finished Lauzon via technical knockout in round one. He then took on another very good opponent in his next fight against Deividas Taurosevicius, losing to the talented Lithuanian via submission (rear naked choke).

Since those back-to-back defeats, however, Lauzon has won six straight. And he's finished every single one of his opponents during that span. He was also featured in a controversial episode of the "Tapout" reality shows that airs on Versus.
