UFC Quick Quote: Dan Henderson is pissed

Posted: 22 Aug 2008 03:06 AM CDT

“I think this is a good match up for me. I'm going to be the guy that's a lot more dangerous on my feet and it's somewhere he doesn't want to be with me. So it's going to be his task to get me into his world on the ground. I'm not the easiest guy to take down, you know—so the determining factor of the fight is who can defend takedowns, who can get their takedown and if I can knock him out coming in or whatever. [Pretty] much all Palhares has is submissions. I try to come up with a game plan not to fight right in the guy's strengths, so obviously I'm going to be trying to stay up on my feet with him. I just see myself knocking him out. I was pretty pissed at my last performance and I'm probably going to be a little bit pissed when I go out there and fight this guy. I'm ready to do a 15-minute grappling match with him if I have to, but I'm not going to lose."

– Former PRIDE champion Dan “Hollywood” Henderson talks to UFC.com about fighting grappling phenom Rousimar “Toquinho" Palhares at UFC 88 in Atlanta, Georgia on September 6. “Hendo” has his back against the wall after dropping his first two UFC matches (against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 75 and Anderson Silva at UFC 82). Has time run out on the 37 year-old superstar? Or is he going to wreak havoc on the up-and-coming Palhares? We’ll know soon enough.

Fall brawl: UFC heads to Portland; Penn and St. Pierre get a date

Penn and St. Pierre 2
Westward Ho!

UFC President Dana White has confirmed with Yahoo! Sports that UFC 91, featuring the lightweight match-up between Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson, will indeed take place at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon — not Boston or Montreal as some had hoped.

White also penciled in the inevitable showdown between BJ Penn and Georges St. Pierre for UFC 93 on January 31, 2009 (Superbowl weekend). That fight was rumored to be at UFC 92 in December, much like the next fight for light heavyweight superstar Wanderlei Silva.

“The Axe Murderer” went on the record during an August 8 session with UFC Fight Club members about fighting at UFC 92, but White was very non-committal about the date and instead hinted at something early in 2009 for the former PRIDE star.

Not to worry Wandy, most fans will agree with me that some things are worth the wait.

Here is a tentative schedule for some of the upcoming UFC events:

  • September 6: UFC 88 ‘Chuck Liddell vs Rashad Evans’ (Atlanta)
  • September 17: UFC Fight Night 15 ‘Nate Diaz vs. Josh Neer’ (Omaha)
  • October 18: UFC 89 ‘Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben’ (Birmingham)
  • October 25: UFC 90 ‘Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote’ (Rosemont)
  • November 15: UFC 91 ‘Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson’ (Portland)
  • December 13: UFC Finale ‘The Ultimate Fighter Season 8′ (Las Vegas)
  • December 27: UFC 92 ‘Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir’ (Las Vegas)
  • January 31: UFC 93 ‘Penn vs. St. Pierre 2′ (TBD)

We’ll keep you posted on any card updates and confirmations for these events as they happen. We have a lot of UFC shows to look forward to over the next few months.

And three of them are free!

MMA Quick Quote: Elite XC issues official response to Antonio Silva positive steroids results

Posted: 21 Aug 2008 10:41 PM CDT

Elite XC DVD

“We respect the California commission and the job they do. We always enjoy working with them and work very well together. The illegal use of steroids is a problem in all major sports, including mixed martial arts. We certainly do not condone the use of steroids. But we also support, trust and have confidence in our fighter, Antonio Silva, who has denied ever taken any illegal substance, including steroids, and is prepared to challenge the results of the California Commission. So until all the facts are known and a final decision is rendered, EliteXC will reserve making any further comments at this time.''

– Head of EliteXC Fight Operations, Jeremy Lappen, issues a formal response on behalf of the organization regarding the news today that its heavyweight champion, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, tested positive for steroids following his win over Justin Eilers to capture the vacant heavyweight strap on July 19. Silva and his management declared his innocence earlier today via the UnderGround forum. It looks like this is Déjà vu all over again for the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) — the UFC has recently been down a similar path with one of its champions, Sean Sherk.

Greased lightning: Kenny Florian ‘A little suspicious’ of Roger Huerta at UFC 87

Posted: 21 Aug 2008 05:00 PM CDT

Props: The Fight Card radio show

Quoteworthy:

To be honest he was really slippery and I don’t mean that like technically-wise, he was really slippery. I don’t know, I don’t want to speculate and say that something was used or whatever but he was just hard to hang on to and that was from all the positions. Even when I had him in like a headlock or a guillotine everything was just really slippery. When I get the position, when I get mount, when I get back-mount, I’ve fought and I’ve wrestled some of the best guys on the ground from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling to MMA and when I get those positions you’re not getting out and Roger was able to get out. It was pretty slippery so I was a little surprised. Just the first time I was mounted on him and he gave his back I was a little suspicious, I knew something was up. Who knows, all I know is I’m good at keeping those positions and I know the difference between sweat and something else and it felt like something else but who knows. (Jokingly) Maybe it’s Albolene left over from the day before from the weight cut!

UFC lightweight contender Kenny Florian indicates that something didn’t feel quite right in his decision win over Roger Huerta at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" on August 9.

Gray Maynard vs Rich Clementi UFC 90 fight on tap

Posted: 21 Aug 2008 04:31 PM CDT

Gray Maynard vs. Rich Clementi

Surging lightweights Gray Maynard (5-0) and Rich Clementi (32-12-1) will collide at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25, according to Sherdog.com.

“The Bully” has kept his professional win streak intact inside the Octagon, winning three straight fights since a bizarre simultaneous knockout/tapout against Rob Emerson at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 Finale in June 2007.

He sustained a broken hand in his unanimous decision win over Frank Edgar his last time out, which has kept him on the sidelines until now. It was a big win for Maynard, proving that he belongs near the top of the crowded 155-pound division.

And a win over “No Love” would only bolster that claim.

Clementi, however, will not go down without a fight. He’s on a blistering six-fight tear, winning seven of his last nine fights since appearing on TUF 4 in 2006. Clementi is a very dangerous veteran who could catch the aggressive, forward-charging Maynard in a submission if he’s not careful.

This is a solid match up. To check out all the rest slated and rumored for UFC 90 click here.

Ozzfest: Metal legend to perform at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’

Posted: 21 Aug 2008 04:21 PM CDT

WAMMA I’m comin’ home.

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio has announced that Heavy Metal legend Ozzy “When Doves Cry” Osbourne will perform live at Affliction "Day of Reckoning" on Saturday, October 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Much like fellow Affliction endorser Megadeth did at the promotions July 19 ‘Banned’ event, the Ozzman will look to rock the Vegas audience and viewers at home at varying intervals throughout the night.

Also like Megadeth, much of today’s generation may be scratching their heads over Affliction’s choice of talent.

That’s to take nothing away from the Grammy Award-winning Osbourne, who re-wrote the book on Metal with the landmark albums ‘Blizzard’ of Ozz’ and ‘Diary of a Madman’. I guess you can also count his stint with some little-known group named Black Sabbath.

But Ozzy, who’s starting to look like a cross between The Undertaker and Yoko Ono, will turn 60 in December. While you can make some concessions in the studio like he did on 2007’s excellent but toned-down ‘Black Rain’, a live performance is a whole different story.

And MMA fans are not a patient bunch. Some will boo any fight that doesn’t have action in the first 30 seconds and Ozzy does have a tough act to follow after Megadeth’s mediocre reception at Affliction ‘Banned’.

Overall I’m not opposed to Ozzy’s appearance, maybe just a little surprised that someone in the target demographic isn’t carrying the torch.

Donald Trump Jr: ‘I cant make it a one man show or the Tito Ortiz show’ at Affliction (Audio)

The contract demands from the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” are apparently too rich for even multimillionaire heir Donald Trump Jr.’s blood. So much for that Affliction MMA “ground-breaking record contract.”
